results greater
than the sum of
the parts.
2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT
North Carolina School of Science
and Mathematics Foundation
From the President
The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Foundation is
the sum of its partners. In this annual report, we feature the partnerships
that we’re forming in increasing numbers between students and mentors
— the instructors, alumni, and professionals who volunteer to work with
students in their labs and offices. Mentors give our students a taste of
real-world work environments while helping them explore their career
interests and build their skills.
In their strategic planning, school leaders have made it a priority to
increase the number of such experiences — in labs and offices, on campus
and off — for our students. Through your gifts, the NCSSM Foundation
supports this effort by funding a Research and Mentorship Coordinator
position, funding transportation of students to their off-campus sites
throughout the Research Triangle, and other efforts.
Every day our faculty, staff, and students collaborate in a number of ways.
And every day, the NCSSM Foundation works to ensure that the NCSSM
experience is a rich and substantive one. Foundation support includes
funding the majority of activities available for our students after 3 p.m.
each school day, much of our professional development for faculty and
staff, and most of the costs of our student academic teams competing on
the national and global stage.
We do not do this work alone. You, our donor, are the other half of the
Power of Two equation. You are a catalyst. Your gift allows us to keep
igniting innovation in our talented students and advancing public
education across North Carolina.
With gratitude,
Katie Wagstaff

Giving News from Around Campus
Biogen Foundation upgrades
videoconferencing studio
NCSSM’s ability to effectively serve students at dozens
of schools throughout North Carolina received a
$75,000 boost from the Biogen Foundation. The
Foundation’s gift supported an upgrade of one of
NCSSM’s four interactive videoconferencing studios.
The upgrade replaced a severely outdated analog
transmission signal, which limits the audio and video
quality of the broadcasts from NCSSM, with all-digital,
high-definition equipment.
“The newly equipped studio allows our distance
education instructors to more effectively reach
students in the field,” says Melissa Thibault, Vice
Chancellor for Distance Education and Extended
Programs. “These high-definition broadcasts provide
students in schools statewide with a level of detail and
seamless interaction we’ve long needed. This is a big
step toward realizing the potential for synchronous
teaching and learning through videoconferencing.”
Representatives of the Class of 1988, whose endowment ensures
in part that celebrations will be held for retiring staff and faculty
members, together with Dr. Jon Miller and Dr. Steve Warshaw.
Two new endowments honor, support
student life
Two groups of alumni have created endowments to
support areas of special interest at the school.
Seeking to make a long-term positive impact on their
school, members of the Class of 1988 created the
Class of 1988 Endowment. With a focus on celebrating
the retirement of faculty and staff members who
have made NCSSM great, the endowment launched
its work in May 2015 with an afternoon reception to
honor Dr. Jon Miller and Dr. Steve Warshaw on their
retirements after their respective 35 and 30 years with
the school.
The endowment will focus secondarily on attracting
the best new talent to the school to help ensure high
quality education for many years to come. Funds
will pay for travel expenses and limited meals for top
interviewing candidates, as resources allow.
“We learned that faculty and staff were ‘passing the
hat’ for personal donations and scraping department
budgets to fund retirement celebrations,” says
Julie Gatton ’88, cochair of the Quarter Century
Fund Planning Committee. “This means that not
all retirements are celebrated, and the constrained
resources limit alumni and current students from
attending the party to personally thank those who
have had such a great influence on their lives.
NCSSM’s underrepresented minority students. The
new endowment provides financial support for
the activities of NCSSM student groups such as the
gospel choir, Colours, and other programming or
activities supporting the enrollment, matriculation,
and academic success of underrepresented minority
students.
“Second, we learned that there is no specific
budget for recruitment of faculty and staff. Typically,
candidates pay for their own travel which, in effect,
means the school is not able to conduct a nationwide
search for top talent. Additionally, NCSSM faculty and
staff frequently pay for their own meals when taking
candidates out during the interview process.”
Institutional Advancement officers revised NCSSM’s
giving societies in 2015 to more appropriately
acknowledge the generosity of our donors and the
difference they make in the life of the school. Now
called Transformative Giving Circles, they recognize the
school’s most generous donors.
A second group of alumni have created the Dr. Joan
Barber Endowment to Support Underrepresented
Minority Student Success. The fund honors Barber,
who retired in 2014 after 28 years as vice chancellor
for student life. She was a career-long advocate of

Learning to do research, then to share it
Amy Sheck and Senita Portlock ‘15
When Senita Portlock ’15 began searching for a project
topic for her Research in Biology class, she bypassed
cancer and infectious diseases, subjects that attracted
her classmates, to choose crop pests. “Agriculture and
food production are problems my generation is going
to have to address, and not enough people in my
generation prioritize them,” she says.
Her choice thrilled Amy Sheck, dean of science at
NCSSM and Portlock’s instructor. Sheck earned a PhD
in entomology at North Carolina State University and
studied the evolutionary interactions between pest
insects and crops. “When I have a student interested in
agriculture, I light up,” Sheck says.
In the research classes, students learn about the
scientific method, then choose a question and design
an experiment to answer it. Over their junior and senior
years, they carry out the experiment, interpret and write
up their findings, and present the project to their peers.
As seniors, they also serve as mentors to the junior
class. A tough grader, Sheck holds the students to high
standards. “This class is not comfortable,” she says.
Portlock says that Dr. Sheck “is really engaged and
enthusiastic about everyone’s project. She brings a lot of
energy to the classroom.”
After learning that the semiochemical trails ladybugs
secrete on leaves deter certain crop pests, Portlock
decided to find out if the phenomenon occurred with
other species — specifically, lacewings and aphids. She
set aphids on a platform in a petri dish surrounded by
a moat of water and gave them the choice of walking
on two fava bean leaves, one marked by lacewing tracks
and the other not. In the end, she discovered that larval
lacewing trails do indeed cause aphids to avoid the host
plant — a finding that could have implications for the
development of natural, biological pest control systems.
One of her biggest challenges was designing an
arena for the aphids that actually tested her question.
Portlock and Sheck visited an NC State lab to see how
researchers approached similar problems. Another
challenge: how to effectively grow the plants and
insects. Portlock learned to open and close the insects’
enclosures quickly during feedings so they wouldn’t
escape. “I got really good at catching bugs,” she said.
Portlock is comfortable now carrying out the scientific
process, asking questions, and communicating scientific
ideas to non-scientists. She presented her project to
her classmates, then to NCSSM’s Board of Trustees,
then at an entomology conference. “I got better as I
went on,” she says. Indeed: The Biotechnology Institute
named her a national BioGENEius winner in June 2015
“The beauty of the research
class is students go through an
uncomfortable process. As seniors,
they realize how far they’ve come.”
— Amy Sheck, Dean of Science
from 28 finalists. Now at Duke, she landed a psychiatry
lab assistant position, a role normally reserved for
upperclassmen. “Since I had previous research
experience, they felt comfortable letting me work with
them.”

Seeing the positive in negative results
Ershela Sims and Deanyone Su ‘16
Deanyone Su ’16 was trying to decide on an engineering research project, some improvement he could
make in the world, when he realized he was getting
hot. “I was sitting next to a window and I noticed that
it was uncomfortably warm in the classroom,” he
remembers. “It’s the point of having a window to allow
light, but not the accompanying heat.” When he started reading journal articles, he learned that no good
solutions yet exist for window insulation. So he decided
to test aerogels — clear, or at least translucent, gels.
But things didn’t go as hoped. “The type of aerogel I
was working with turned out to be not suitable for window placement,” Su says. “It didn’t function the way I
expected it to, because there was a coating that wasn’t
identified on the gel.”
Instructor Ershela Sims nods as she listens to Su
describe his research experience. Her two primary
goals for NCSSM’s first-ever, two-semester engineering
research class were for students to understand that
research actually exists in engineering, for starters,
and that it’s OK to get negative results, as Su did. “That
doesn’t mean the work isn’t publishable,” she says.
“My favorite part of teaching this class was hearing the
questions the students would ask each other,” says
Sims, who also serves as NCSSM’s dean of engineering
and technology. “I also enjoyed observing them help
each other. One student’s research involved circuitry
and he needed some additional content knowledge.
I overheard Deanyone offer to help him out. That’s
how engineers function, we collaborate and bounce
things off each other. One of my fond memories from
my days as a software development engineer was
popping our heads over the cubicles to check in with
colleagues.”
Compared with Su’s internship at NC State this past
summer, the research class offered great exposure
to the research process. “When you walk into someone’s lab, the project is pretty well set, but here you

start with the literature reading and come up with an
idea and refine it. It’s much more comprehensive. It’s
given me a much better idea of how interconnected
research is with all of our classes,” he says. “It’s easier
to recognize and analyze what we’re taught now. You
have this equation, this data, you think about where it
came from, and how they drew certain conclusions. It
gives me a more analytical viewpoint.”
“Critical thinking,” says Sims, nodding happily.
“Some students would hit a bump in the road and they
would get upset or discouraged, but Deanyone was
always very calm and resilient,” Sims remembers. “The
insulated boxes took forever to come in. He was very
patient and just kept working on other aspects of his
project. He exhibited so much resilience. He has excellent writing skills, and he took ownership of the project
and worked well independently.”
She also watched a fairly shy student transform into
one who was suggesting articles, leading journal club
discussions, and offering solutions by the end of the
class. “I got to see him grow.”
2014-2015 Annual Report | 15
Former mentee pays it forward
Dr. Shiaowen David Hsu ’88 and Monica Mehareb ’16
Monica Mehareb ’16 felt antsy on the bus ride to
the first day of her mentorship with Duke University
gastrointestinal oncologist Dr. Shiaowen David Hsu ’88.
“It was extremely intimidating,” Mehareb says. “I was
like ‘Holy moly, what have I gotten myself into? I’m in
high school!’”
But as soon as Hsu opened the door, he dispelled her
fears. “He was welcoming from the start,” she says. “He
is a very charismatic person. He’s very easy to talk to.
That calmed me down.”
Coming from a family acutely affected by cancer,
Mehareb knew from a young age she was interested
in researching the disease. She jumped at the
opportunity to work in Hsu’s lab through NCSSM’s
Mentorship program, sending students to work in labs
two afternoons a week during their senior year.
In his NCSSM years, Hsu, too, completed a Mentorship.
Once a week he worked on a DNA repair project in the
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill lab of cancer
researcher Aziz Sancar — who, incidentally, won the
Nobel Prize in chemistry this year.
“Aziz was a great mentor,” Hsu says. “He’s a very busy
scientist, but he carved out a two- to-three hour
window to work one-on-one with me each week.”
Hsu says his position as a Duke cancer researcher,
clinician, and William Dalton Family assistant professor
of cancer genomics owes much to the program. After
graduating from NCSSM, Hsu continued working
with Sancar through a summer internship, four years
of undergraduate work, and a PhD. “If I didn’t do the
Mentorship program, I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I’d be
in the position I’m in now.”
Hsu and his team are studying the biology of colorectal
cancer in hopes of coming up with a more effective
alternative to chemotherapy. Using genomic-based
technology, they are testing whether they can slow
or stop the disease’s progression by inhibiting the
signaling pathway of Wnt proteins. In the lab, Mehareb
treats cancer cells with the Wnt inhibitor to see if the
process hinders the cells’ growth.
“Dr. Hsu treats me like one of his lab members and
someone who’s actually doing something, rather than
this little high school student they’re having to put up
with,” Mehareb says. “I enjoy knowing that even though
I’m doing this small-scale project, in the end, I’m going
to contribute to something larger.”
Hsu wants his mentees to understand that they don’t

be afraid to ask questions.”

have to know everything. “As a senior in high school
working with Aziz, I was totally clueless,” he says. “I
want my mentees to learn not to be afraid to ask
questions.” When she makes an error, Hsu patiently
explains how, why, and when she made the mistake
and how to fix it, Mehareb says. “He tells me what this
mistake actually means in the long run and why it was
beneficial to my learning experience.”

$1 million gift supports
student research, mentorships
In March 2015, the Burroughs
Wellcome Fund announced a
$1 million gift to North Carolina
School of Science and Mathematics
to create the Burroughs Wellcome
Fund Endowment for Student
Research, Mentorship, and Innovation. Burroughs Wellcome Fund
President John Burriss, announcing
the gifts during a celebration at the
North Carolina Executive Mansion,
said North Carolina School of
Science and Mathematics represented a sure investment for inspiring the next generation of science
enthusiasts and advancing STEM
education across the state.
The gift supports an increasing
area of focus for NCSSM. The
school is working to give students
more real-world experiences and
offer more hands-on opportunities
to conduct research, two of four
key objectives in the 2012-2017
Strategic Plan.
Providing more research opportunities requires more resources,
of course — from faculty time to
teach the research courses to the
coordination of internship and
mentorships, transporting students
to off-campus research labs, and
equipment and supplies.
And it requires mentors. Dozens of
NCSSM alumni join with other area
professionals in welcoming these
high school students into their
offices and labs. They are rarely
disappointed.
“It’s been a long time since I
worked with high school students,”
says Brian Morin ’85, president and
COO of Dreamweaver International, a lithium battery technology
firm, who mentored two NCSSM
students two years ago. “I forgot
how little they knew, yet how fast
their mental engines run. With a
little direction, they accomplished
huge steps.”
“Research has shown that students
who participated in original research
were 70 percent more likely to pursue STEM degrees, and students
who participated in STEM mentorship/internships were 20 percent
more likely to major in a STEM
field than those who did not,” says
NCSSM Chancellor Todd Roberts.
“As we all work to increase the
number of bright young people
entering STEM fields, this
Burroughs Wellcome endowment will help us support student
research, mentorship and other
innovative opportunities.”

“If I didn’t do the Mentorship Program, I’ll be honest,
I’m not sure I’d be in the position I’m in now.”
Dr. Shiaowen David Hsu ’88 — who was paired with Aziz Sancar, winner of the 2015
Nobel Prize in chemistry, for his own Mentorship while attending NCSSM — is
mentoring Monica Mehareb ’16 in his gastrointestinal oncology lab at Duke this year.
