Message from the President
“ Technology has given us amazing tools . . . [but] let’s
not forget the joy of receiving a handwritten note,
or having a cup of tea with someone . . . ”
Teach them what they need to know for life. (Saint Julie Billiart) You’ll hear these words frequently
at NDA. From our earliest days, Saint Julie’s words have guided program planning in Notre Dame schools. It is
important to us to make sure that our students graduate from NDA with the skills and knowledge necessary
to be productive members of society in the 21st century. Among the many necessary skills today is the proper use of
technology. Electronic devices have put the world at our fingertips and have made communication instantaneous.
Keeping up with the growth of technology is certainly a challenge for every school. Equipment is always being
upgraded and there is always something new on the horizon. And it’s all very expensive. But more difficult than
keeping up materially is the challenge of staying out front ethically. Because we are a faith community as well as an
academic institution, we can also address these challenges.
All kinds of information are readily available to today’s students and so it is important to teach how to evaluate or
analyze the material they are using. It is easy to jump to conclusions quickly and make judgments assuming that
the information you have is correct or is the full story. What news sources are credible and what is shown or shared
primarily for the shock value? It is also important to have a balanced approach to research.
Do you ever wonder what Emily Post would say to us today about the use of technology and etiquette? Or do you
wonder what the word “privacy” means today? We’ve all been at special occasions when someone’s phone starts to ring,
or we’ve been stuck on a train near someone carrying on endless conversations. You never know today if someone is
taking a picture of you and then, where that picture might show up. And I am always saddened when I see two or
three people sitting together in a restaurant and, rather than talking to each other, they are texting someone else.
Yes, technology has given us amazing tools that can be used to advance the good in society. We have a better understanding of what is going on around the world. We are connected in ways that were not possible a century ago. At the
same time, let’s not forget the joy of receiving a handwritten note, or having a cup of tea with someone who is really
listening to us.
Merry Christmas to all our NDA friends!

It’s a Girl Thing
Body Image Expert on Campus The Global Girl
We were thrilled to welcome award-winning author Kjerstin Gruys to campus in
September. Gruys is the author of Mirror Mirror Off the Wall: How I Learned to
Love My Body by Not Looking at It for a Year. Her powerful story examines body
image and society’s definition of beauty.
In a presentation to the students, she shared stories about her own eating disorder
and how she thinks the media and fashion industry impact how we feel about our
bodies. She said, “We spend a lot of time looking at perfect images in the media.
But perfect is hard to love. For me, lovable is the combination of kindness and
quirks that make you unique!”
e presentation was so well received by the students that they kept raising their
hands to ask more questions after the bell rang.
Above left: After her presentation, Gruys joined
students in the library for a book signing.
Above right: Seniors Jena Doyle (left) and Briana
Tobin-Rosman created the display of student quotes.
e International Day of the Girl was a global
celebration on October 11 and to mark this day
our students reflected on the educational opportunities available to girls around the world. ey
viewed e Girl Effect video about the life of
women in impoverished countries and Malala
Yousafzai’s speech to the United Nations. (Both
are worth Googling if you have the chance.)
Students were also asked, “What is the value of
my education?” eir responses were displayed
outside the library and we think you’ll be
impressed – check out page 12.

focus on women’s health
This fall, the co-curricular club Cougars for the Cure initiated programs to raise awareness about ovarian and breast
cancer. Announcements were made about the diseases and
many sports teams wore teal and pink to bring attention
to the cause. Each awareness campaign culminated in a
dress down day where students paid $1 to wear their pink
and teal sweats. The money went to organizations that find
a cure for these two diseases impacting women.

Invigorating
Everywhere you look, technology is there. While some cringe at
the impact of modern technology on our lives, others choose to
embrace it. Notre Dame Academy recognizes the value and is putting technology to work across all disciplines. Devices and apps
work together to expand the classroom experience from a traditional lecture-based format to a creative combination of lecture,
digital, and real-time problem solving. “Technology has added a
dimension to the classroom that the girls have gravitated to,” Principal Kathleen Rowley Colin ’89 says. “It makes learning so much
more exciting — that is their world.”
Incorporating a mix of devices, apps, and software into her classes
has allowed Russillo’s students to both learn about a specific topic
and gain hands-on experience with technology. Last year, one of
her assignments was to create a PowerPoint presentation on a famous political artist. e students then converted the PowerPoint
into a video using the Explain Everything app. Next, students narrated their videos and posted them on the class page of the student
portal so that everyone in the class could listen to each other’s presentations. “By completing this project, students learned and
shared their knowledge in a different way,” Russillo explains.
Beyond the Text
As part of a fellowship through the National Council of Teachers
of English, Russillo will be looking at how digital media and digital tools like e-readers impact reading comprehension. Her study
will take a comprehensive look at digital literacy at NDA. She says,
“We are at a crossroads in education, and it is both challenging
and invigorating to think about how learning will change in the
next few years, or even the next few months.”
Bringing technology to the classroom is critical for college
preparation. In order to utilize these tools, however, teachers must
first be comfortable operating them. “ere is always a period
of growth in terms of learning how to use the technology appropriately while maintaining the desired level of instruction,” Allyson
Butler, World Language department chair and Spanish teacher,
says. “It is truly a challenging effort that all teachers are currently
experiencing in their classrooms.”
For Butler, it is time well spent as she sees her students’ classroom
experience greatly enhanced. “My ability to access authentic
resources, such as newscasts, podcasts, and videos, has grown,” she
says. “Students are hearing a variety of dialectal accents from
around the world, and at an authentic linguistic pace.”
e availability of resources beyond traditional texts and language
lab recordings allows teachers like Butler to explore alternative
methods of instruction. At NDA, a wide variety of tools are
available across curricula. With the help of iPads, Smart Boards,
and Apple TVs in every classroom, teachers can get creative and
be certain that their students understand the lessons.
Courtney Murray Russillo ’00, chair of the English department,
believes technology encourages students to own more of the
learning experience. “By using iPads and having students research,
create, and evaluate in real-time, they are invested in learning
because it is an active process.”
Technology at Work
Renee Parry, Science department chair, has technology working
hard in her chemistry, physics, and engineering courses. She uses
computer-based measurement equipment to collect real-time data,
apps to video and record objects, industry-grade engineering modeling software, and apps to record chemistry lab measurements.
Parry also relies on virtual labs that run on Java for her physics
classes. “e University of Colorado has an extensive set of virtual
labs that enable our students to conduct experiments that may not
be feasible in the classroom setting,” she explains.
ese tools are beneficial to both teacher and student, particularly
for ensuring that each student understands the lesson. In Parry’s
chemistry classes, students use the Notability app to record lab
measurements through photographs and annotations and then
submit them electronically. “e students love this method of documenting labs because they enjoy the creativity inherent in the
iPad.” Parry says. By recording lab work with photographs, she is
able to review each student’s work and be sure they used every
gauge correctly and recorded data precisely.

There’s an app for That
There are more apps
out there than most of us
know what to do with,
but NDA has identified key
productivity apps which
are on all iPads:
30 Hands
Pages
Numbers
Keynote
iMovie
Explain Everything
Notability
Other apps which teachers
have used include:
Book Press
Book Creator
Educreations
Explain Everything
Garage Band
iTalk
Readdle Shakespeare
Science 360
Socrative
TedTalks
Vernier Video
Parry also likes to conduct in-class surveys of her
students’ comprehension of material, asking students to open their class website on their iPads and
type their answer into a pre-made survey box.
“I can immediately see their responses on my
computer or iPad without the class seeing the results,” she says. “is way I can assess in real-time
how each student is doing in our lesson and make
adjustments in the instruction to ensure all students get the support they need.”
In a similar way, Parry uses Apple TV to review
and share students’ work, particularly model
drawings. “e iPad enables students to draw
science models — anything from atoms and cells
to thermodynamic heat engines — with more creativity,” she says. “e ease with which they can
create colorful, meaningful models greatly improves the students’ engagement, giving them a
more conducive mental state for retention of information.” With the addition of Apple TV, a student can instantly project her drawing for the class
to see with just one swipe of her finger. “In every
lesson in which I have incorporated the iPad,
students naturally collaborate,” Parry says. “You
might expect that they be consumed by their own
screen, but the contrary is true. ey eagerly share
their work with their peers and are very comfortable asking questions about each others’ work.”
Flipping the Classroom
e flipped classroom model is on the rise with
the continued implementation of technology. In
this teaching model the traditional lecture and
homework elements are flipped. Students watch
short video lectures or related clips at home prior
to the class. en, class time is devoted to problem
solving, projects, and discussions.
is approach offers a number of benefits for the
student. First, the student can learn at her own
pace and at a time of her choosing. Also, if the
pace of a video is too fast, she can pause it or
rewind to listen to complicated portions as many
times as she needs.
“e idea is a paradigm shift in education,”
Michael Minihane, Director of Information Technology says. NDA has applications, such as 30
Hands Learning, in place to help faculty easily implement modern teaching techniques, such as
video lectures, in conjunction with traditional
teaching methods. Minihane says, “We don’t want
to have strictly an online learning model; we want
to have a blended learning model.”
Several teachers at NDA incorporate the flipped
classroom model into their classes with positive
results. Mathematics teacher Chris Bianchi uses it
for all of his classes. “My classes run the whole educational spectrum, from traditional lecture to
collaborative learning to discovery learning to the
flipped classroom,” he says. “I believe that different topics lend themselves to different methods of
presentation, and I believe that different students
will respond to different modes of instruction.”
Because students have watched the lecture before
coming to class, they are mentally prepared for the
topic. Bianchi says he can break students into
groups at the start of class and work that way for
most of the period. “By contrast, in a traditional
lecture format, I might only be able to give the
students five minutes at the end of class to work in
groups,” he says. “With the flipped classroom,
group work becomes a much more prominent
component of the course, and many students find
the group work to be both helpful and enjoyable.”
Students are also taking advantage of the flipped
classroom model. In Sue Pratt’s global financial
systems classes, students use iPads to create voice
annotated video presentations of their final
projects. She shares, “Students create videos of
themselves presenting marketing plans to potential investors on the Explain Everything app and
post them in 30 Hands for their classmates to
watch at home. Our time in class allows for richer
collaboration and more thorough peer review.
ey truly learn from each other.” Pratt notes that
it is easy to archive the videos and she expects
many students will be better prepared for college
business classes which often take a student-centered approach.

Dynamic Discussion
JULIA MADDEN ’15
Sister Mary Janice Bartolo, SNDdeN, agrees. She,
like Bianchi, uses the flipped classroom model as
just one of many teaching methods in her eology classes and she considers it very valuable.
“Students in general are more participative, as
they have had time to process and consider the
questions they want to raise,” she says. She believes this model, in the way she is using it, promotes critical thinking skills. “I find it is good for
the girls to grapple with the concepts first, with
some guidance from my PowerPoints or notes,”
Bartolo says. “What they then bring to the table
of discussion is more enriching with some
thought put into it prior to class.”
Using 30 Hands for geometry makes learning so much easier because my teacher
posts videos which explain the materials
very clearly. It helps me have a better
understanding of what I am learning.
In physics class I was able to perform a
lab on velocity by using an app called
Vernier Video Analysis. I created position
and velocity graphs for my data, which
made learning more fun and the project
was easier to understand.
KEELY COYNE ’16
ANA GALLOTTO ’14
For Bartolo, the greatest benefit of the flipped
classroom is the increased time she has to engage
with her students. Recently, she assigned two
video clips and an article relating to International
Day of the Girl to watch and read at home.
“When we next met, we had the most amazing
discussion on the plight of girls in other cultures
based on their watching and reflecting on e Girl
Effect and Malala Yousafzai’s speech at the United
Nations,” she says. “It opened up discussion about
other cultures and practices, the impact education
can have on women and society in the broader
context, as well as reflecting on the idea of forgiveness, compassion, and courage.” In the past,
Bartolo would have taken class time to view the
videos, but she found this approach allowed for a
much richer experience for the students.
With the explosion of so many new tools to share
and access knowledge, Notre Dame’s teachers and
students are transforming learning in ways that
have never before been possible. NDA is committed to embracing technology and what future
digital resources may offer. Colin says, “Whenever you can re-energize a classroom with a new
approach to teaching and learning, the outcome is
only positive.”

Director of Information Technology Mike Minihane notes that the Academy’s
implementation of iPads, Smart Boards, and other technologies in the classroom is the
result of careful and thoughtful planning. “Our emphasis has always been on enhancing teaching and learning and not just on the latest technology and new devices. It is
important that new tools be integrated into teaching and learning and not layered on
top of the curriculum.”
This intentional approach allows teachers to experiment in the classroom, develop
best practices, and thoughtfully add new technology to the curriculum. Minihane knows
that building the comfort level of the faculty is critical. “Not everyone is going to adopt
and change their classes overnight. It is a gradual process and it is important to
provide training and professional development opportunities to ensure success.”
For Minihane, access to the latest technology is a reflection of the Academy’s
mission and Saint Julie’s directive to “Teach whatever is necessary to equip the
students for life…”
Resources include:
• A secure state-of-the-art, wireless
network enhanced to support full
classroom use
• Two general use computer labs
• Classroom sets of laptops and
iPads to use throughout the
building, along with netbooks
and printer access
• A graphic design lab
• A multimedia lab for World
Languages
• A music lab with full-size weighted
electronic keyboards
• Smart Boards in every classroom
He adds, “Technology provides unprecedented opportunities for communication,
collaboration, and critical thinking, all of which prepare our students to become
lifelong learners. I’m always excited to see all the way our teachers and students are
transforming learning!”

Advancing NDA
campaign
for
cushing auditorium
The Final Act
As the removal of 870 seats began on June 13, one goal superseded all others:
to have a renovated Cushing Auditorium ready for the first day of school.
Each seat was painstakingly taken apart, the frames and hardware preserved, the cushions and fabrics destined for recycling. Electricians moved in to update wiring and prepare for the installation
of a dynamic new sound and projection system. Contractors opened up the wall housing the projection room. Painters and carpet layers waited their turn. With dust and noise taking over one end
of the building, fundraising continued at the other.
As the school year began, more than 700 alumnae, parents, and friends made contributions totaling nearly $460,000, allowing students to return to an auditorium ready to accommodate them.
“We still have work to do,” explains Lynn Page Flaherty, director of institutional advancement.
“e basic renovations are complete, but we are still without a new stage curtain and some of the
finishing touches. anks to the generosity of Signet Electronics, our audiovisual provider, and great
project management by our facilities department, we saved money on many parts of the renovation,
making us just $35,000 from our goal.”
Included in that goal is another $10,000 to officially rededicate the auditorium stage in honor
of Cappi and Ted Doyle P’72 ’73 ’76 ’82, beloved directors of generations of NDA dramatic and
musical productions. Mrs. Doyle was also an English teacher.
“Mrs. Doyle was the reason I succeeded and survived high school,” wrote Kristen Porter ’87. “She
was my teacher, my mentor, and my director … She wrote all of my college recommendations and
was my cheerleader when I lacked confidence.”
e Campaign for Cushing Auditorium will continue until these goals are met.
“It was wonderful to have the space usable for the girls’ return,” says President of the Academy
Sister Barbara A. Barry, SNDdeN. “We’ve already hosted speakers who have been so impressed with
our sound and projection capabilities. And it was really special to be able to rededicate the space on
October 9 (see sidebar) and celebrate with so many people who have supported the project so far.
But we’re not done yet. We can’t wait to celebrate again when the project is 100% complete.”

Re-Dedication
fideles society reception & the re-dedication of the cushing auditorium
On October 9, nearly 150 alumnae, parents, and friends gathered on campus for NDA’s annual Fideles Society Reception. The gathering included
a special ribbon cutting ceremony to re-dedicate the Cushing Auditorium. Senior Madeline Blackburn thanked guests for their generosity and
the cast of Les Misérables performed two of their favorite songs to entice the crowd to attend the November show. The evening concluded with a
cocktail reception in the Saint Julie Dining Hall.
1 Elizabeth Ballantyne Mullen ’63R and Anne Stonefield. 2 Barbara and Brad Caron P’12 ’16 joined Sister Barbara and the Pinches on the steps of the Cushing Auditorium for the official ribbon
cutting ceremony. 3 The early support of Kitty and Tim Pinch P’02 ’07 ’12 was critical to the auditorium renovation’s success. Their philanthropy inspired many generous donations.

Reunion Challenge 2014
Reunions are full of memories – and ruminations – as
graduates reflect on the girls they were and celebrate
the women they have become.
“Reunion is such a special time,” says Alumnae Director Stevie Lee
Taylor. “To witness the friendships that have endured and others that
are rekindled during the celebrations is really wonderful. And to hear
all the things that our graduates have accomplished since they left
NDA is truly amazing.”
Planning for the 2014 reunion celebrations kicked off with a reception on October 22, attended by interested volunteers from all
reunion classes. Reunion Weekend will feature tours and activities
for all reunion class members – highlighted by the Alumnae
Memorial Mass and a complimentary cocktail reception – as well as
individual class banquets and celebrations. Part of the kickoff
conversation focused on reunion class giving.
“e Reunion Class Gift is a growing tradition that has made a very
visible impact at NDA,” explains Lynn Page Flaherty, director of
institutional advancement. “In the last two years alone, our reunion
classes have upgraded the desks and chairs in our classrooms,
supported scholarships, and financed the renovation of rows of seats
in the auditorium.
Every donation makes a difference at NDA. e Reunion Class Gift
represents the collective donations made by a class during their
reunion year, regardless of the purpose of the gift.
is year, reunion classes are being asked to support the students
themselves, with donations in support of financial aid.
“e average financial aid grant is $5,000,” says Flaherty. “We’re
asking our alumnae to consider how many girls they can ‘sponsor’ as
a class, to make NDA possible for the young women who follow in
their footsteps.”
“With the reopening of the seventh grade next fall, financial aid
becomes an even bigger need as families consider making a six year
commitment. We want to make NDA accessible to the best and
brightest. Our alumnae have always understood and supported this
and we can’t wait to see how many girls we can help with their
generous donations.”
annual fund campaign 2013-2014
Whether you give to the Alumnae Fund, Parent Fund, Medallion Fund,
or the general Annual Fund itself, your contribution touches every part
of the NDA experience.
These unrestricted dollars help bridge the gap between tuition revenue
and the actual cost of an NDA education. Donations make a diverse
list of school programs possible – from One Book One School activities and student support presentations, to production costs for the
annual musical and even financial aid.
Each year, a corps of committed parents and alumnae share their
passion for the school by lending their efforts to the Annual Fund Campaign. Whether they reach you by phone, letter, or email, please
respond generously. Your donation gives our school life!

The 2012–2013
President’s Report on Giving
Dear Friends,
e President’s Report on Giving celebrates the philanthropic spirit that allows Notre Dame Academy to flourish.
e pages that follow – and the names of more than 1,800 donors who made a gift during the past fiscal year – are
a true testament to the confidence you have in the school we are today and in our vision for the future.
As we embark on the reopening of our seventh and eighth grades, our mission to educate young women has never
been more relevant. We know that NDA is a place where young women feel comfortable raising their hand,
sharing ideas, and speaking their mind. Our faculty members encourage this and push each young woman to find
her voice. is fall, we celebrated the second annual International Day of the Girl and we asked our students to
reflect on the value of their education. Here are few of our favorite responses:
Education helps me have my own view of the world. It makes me respect myself and makes others respect me.
— Qianping, Class of 2016
It gives me a future that is in my own hands.
— Meaghan, Class of 2015
I value my education because it enables me to think critically in different situations and helps me to help others.
— Lauren, Class of 2017
I value education because I know it can help me stand up for what is right and just.
—Carly, Class of 2015
Educated, empowered women have the dignity and strength to accomplish anything.
— Jillian, Class of 2015
ese comments confirm that – with your support – we are succeeding in Saint Julie Billiart’s charge to “Train up
strong women ... ” Your donations provide the resources, programs, and opportunities that allow our students to
cultivate their unique gifts and develop the confidence to share them with the world.
We are grateful for your faith in us and we count on your continued participation to ensure a brilliant future
for NDA. ank you!
Sincerely,
Sister Barbara A. Barry, SNDdeN ’69

Financial Aid & Scholarship Giving
The Academy's commitment to financial aid and scholarships is at the heart of who we are as
a school sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Endowing a scholarship is a meaningful way to provide the gift of an NDA education to a student who may not have the financial
resources to cover tuition and books. A scholarship fund can also recognize merit or special
talents. Current-use gifts help NDA fulfill the more than $700,000 annual commitment to these
girls and their families.
If you are interested in establishing a scholarship at NDA, or wish to support current funds,
please contact Lynn Page Flaherty, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 781.749.5930,
ext. 2246 or [email protected].

One such opportunity is the Appalachia
Service Project. Each year, NDA serves
those living in poverty in the Appalachian
Mountain region through the Appalachia
Service Project, a national home repair
ministry. Our students, parents, faculty,
and friends are part of more than 222,000
volunteers who have repaired and improved over 20,000 homes in Kentucky,
Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia since
ASP began 43 years ago.

Christopher passed away on September 5 after a valiant four-year
long battle with Neuroblastoma.
Christopher was the Grimes’ first
born child (age 8) and the big
brother of Gillian (age 5) and Daniel
Grimes (age 4). He was an enthusiastic skier and remained a cheerful,
active boy throughout the trials of
cancer. He also loved to swim, play
tennis and had a particular fondness of rockets and fireworks.

Not every graduate can stop by campus for a

How does NDA impact your life today?

From Abstraction to a Digital Pattern — By Logan Bouchard ’14
Senior Logan Bouchard used the graphic arts lab at NDA to create this artwork. She explains, “I made this piece from a
photograph of my graphite drawing and, using Adobe Photoshop, I rotated the image at 90 and 45 degree angles to create the symmetrical pattern I was looking for. I like this piece because it reminds me of a kaleidoscope which distorts images or objects and creates a beautiful symmetric pattern.”
