NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA
Northumberland County - “Mother County of the Northern Neck” - is a place of serene beauty
and warm hospitality. Founded in 1634, the area continues to foster and protect the heritage
industries of its early settlers - watermen and farmers - who enjoyed this pristine land on the
Chesapeake Bay. It is also rich in history. Some of our nation’s earliest patriots were born and
nurtured here.
Northumberland County is in eastern Virginia at the tip of the beautiful Northern Neck
peninsula, bounded by the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Its many rivers and creeks
offer more than 550 miles of shoreline, more than any other jurisdiction in Virginia. Its eight quaint
villages are hubs for business and services.
Located about 70 miles northeast of Richmond and 112 miles southeast of Washington, D.C.,
Northumberland County continues today as a rural area cherished by its 12,000+ permanent
residents. Its waterways, wineries, oyster farms, resident artisans, farmers markets, and antiques,
vintage, and boutique shopping experiences all contribute to the county as a hidden gem waiting
for you to discover.
So join us! Visit us soon! We’d love to see you.
