This month’s cover features a 1953 Chevrolet Bel-Air owned by
Floyd Michaels. This car was sold new by Schwartzberg Chevrolet in Milwaukee. The original owner was a farmer who used the
car primarily for going into town, and for getting the mail.
Floyd purchased the car in 1975 from the grandson of the original owner who was in the process of building a house and needed money to pay for well and septic.
When purchased by Floyd the car had 35,000 miles on the
odometer and currently has 42,000 miles. Floyd and his wife
Lorraine took the car to the VCCA show in Seven Springs, PA
where it won an award.
When the Wisconsin Automobile Museum in Hartford opened in
1986 the car was put on display where it has remained since,
except when it is taken out for maintenance.
The car is completely original except it was repainted prior to
1975 and had a new top installed in 2010.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) recommends
replacing all tires at least every six years. When purchasing
new tires discuss the vendors product turn over rate, to
ensure the product that you are receiving has been recently
manufactured. Above is an example of a DOT code that is
found on a tire.
It's easy to identify the age of a tire. All tires sold in the US
require a DOT code which is mandated by the U.S
Department of Transportation. The DOT code indicates the
tire meets all federal standards, these identification numbers
are important if the product is recalled. The DOT code begins
with letters followed by numbers and letters; this is the plant
code identifying the manufacture of the tire. The last four
numbers after the plant code represent the week and the
year the tire was manufactured.
Example:
DOT
K3AP 4309
K3AP is the plant code identifying the
manufacturer of this tire.
4309 is the week and year the tire was
manufactured, this tire would have been
manufactured the 43rd week of 2009.
Other numbers are marketing codes are used at
the manufacturer's discretion.

A
luminum foil is softer than chrome so it can remove
road grime and corrosion without scratching. When you are
spray painting foil works great for masking off oddly shaped
pieces that would otherwise take a ton of tape. And who
hasn’t made a ‘fuse” with a wad of aluminum foil?
A
luminum pans make great drain pans
and parts washers. They are just about the
perfect size for cleaning a carb. After you
use them a few time they are recyclable.
B
aby powder on a squeaky fan belt will silence it almost as fast as
turning off the engine. It also helps for putting on nitrite or latex gloves
(which you can also buy at the grocery store).
C
oca-Cola has a number of uses. First
off, the bottle itself makes a decent funnel.
Thanks in part to its fizzy goodness but
mostly its phosphoric acid content cola also
make a solid makeshift cleaner. Pour a bit
on battery terminals to remove corrosion or
use it to remove corrosion from a bumper
by pouring a bit on a wadded up ball of
aluminum foil.
F
ritos crunched up can be
used to stop a radiator leak.
omet cleanser is like a powdered polishing compound
when used on that trashed paint job that is only worth spending $1.99 fixing.
C
at box litter is a dry clay that will absorb a spill making it
much easier to clean up. You can even throw some in a cloth
bag under your seat to absorb moisture from the air and help
rid the odor of a musty car interior. Charcoal briquettes also
work well for absorbing odors.
I
vory dishwashing soap
is good for color sanding.
lastic garbage bags are great for masking and
also are great for covering engines on stands.
S
.O.S pads are steel wool embedded with soap but they
work well for getting the toughest corrosion and grime
from just about anything if you don't mind them scratching it. Don’t forget Scotch–Brite pads either. They are
abrasive and can scratch but they get into tight places and
soak up the nastiest gunk.
ide and other detergents work pretty
well for scrubbing oil stains on concrete.
ar of soap rubbed on a crack
in a gas tank can stop a small leak.

O
ven cleaner is some of the nastiest cleaning sauce that you will find in a grocery store
and we mean that in a good way. It contains lye
and will eat up grease and gunk with the best of
‘em. It’s also good at removing anodizing from
aluminum and etched polished surfaces, so
watch out what you spray.
T
oothpaste is mostly abrasives so it can be
used to polish things besides teeth. It will
work on oxidized plastic headlight lens. Old
toothbrushes make great parts brushes.
et-Ones are almost
as good as shop rags.

to store small parts.
