About MOCSEM
The Mustang Owners Club of SouthEastern Michigan
(MOCSEM) was founded in November 1975 by a group of
people with the desire to protect the Ford Mustang’s role
as one of the most attractive and fun-filled cars ever
made. We are enthusiasts of all ages and from all walks of
life who are enjoying a love affair with all generations of
America’s premier Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe,
convertible or fastback from 1964½ to the current models,
we love them all. The mission of MOCSEM club members
is to enjoy, collect, restore, and preserve the history of the
Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles
that they played in making this one of the greatest cars of
all time. Although Mustang ownership is not a requirement
for club membership, your enthusiasm, expertise, and / or
love of the automobile are most welcome.
Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in
varying body styles, models and years. Club members are
always exchanging information, providing sources for
parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or
maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse
group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern
Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford
Mustang.
Our general membership meetings are held on the second
Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The
Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club
activities, technical information, feature stories, Ford and
Mustang news and product information, advertisements
and business service locations, and more. Some club
activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events,
cruise nights, museum tours, visits to automotive
attractions and happenings, and technical sessions.
General Meetings
General membership meetings are held the
second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at:
Warren Valley Banquet Center
26116 W. Warren Ave.
Dearborn Heights, MI
(313) 561-1040
A buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 pm for $13 perperson which includes basic beverages. (A cash bar is
also available.) So come early and socialize over dinner.
The dinner menu will vary every month and will be
published on the event calendar at www.mocsem.com.
General meetings are open to the public, often include
guest speakers, and are a great way to learn more about
the club and get to know our board and members.
Newsletter
The Accelerator is published monthly as the official
newsletter of MOCSEM and is now available ONLY via
the club web site at www.mocsem.com. Due to increasing
publishing costs that the club can no longer afford to
absorb, hard copies of the newsletter will not be printed
and mailed out to members who for whatever reason do
not access it free online. All correspondence concerning

Mustang Memories
Moves back to WHQ!
Well, as you’ve likely already heard, our annual Mustang
Memories show is moving back to Ford WHQ in Dearborn.
Immediately after the announcement by Ford Motor
Company that it would be investing over a billion dollars
over the next 10 years rebuilding the Ford campus in
Dearborn, we were notified that the project would sadly be
affecting our show field as soon as this year. That meant
we would need to find a new temporary location for
Mustang Memories. After considering a few options, the
most sensible one was to go back to Ford World
Headquarters. There have been some changes on that
property since our event was last hosted there back in
2013. There are now three, large solar panel-section
overhangs in the main show lot which we will have to work
around, as well as a much smaller snowfield then we had
at the Product Development Center. The major impact will
be that between 800 and 900 cars will be the maximum
we will be able to accommodate in the WHQ lot without
utilizing some possible overflow areas (that we are looking
into just in case). But no one can argue that the backdrop
of The Glass House is the just about the best there is for a

Ford car show, period!. We have some revamped layout
planning happening as we speak to help ensure a good
flow for the event. Of course we will still have a lot of cool
attractions at Mustang Memories, as usual. You can again
expect to meet some of our Mustang Heroes scattered
among the crowd, plus we’ll feature new food options –
and yes, judging has returned! I can't believe how fast
summer is upon us already, and our huge annual show
will be here before we know it! Please register your

their events director. Mark said that he would establish a
sign-up list for members, and also send show information
to be posted on the MOCSEM website.
See everyone there!
Mike Rey then introduced Skip Anderson of Varsity Ford
in Ann Arbor. Skip talked about the dealership’s annual
car show to benefit the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, to be
held on Saturday June 11. Anderson noted that
attendance at the event is free, and he brought some
nostalgic items to give to the members.

Mike Rey next introduced Jim Nicholetti, who provided
information about an upcoming event called “Blessing of
the Bikes,” on Sunday May 15. Attendees at the event’s
show will vote on the cars and motorcycles for awards,
plus there will be a barbeque. Funds being raised will be
donated to a local food bank. Jim also noted that some
remote control cars will be raffled off free for children.

MOCSEM May Membership Meeting Minutes
Tues., May 10, 2016, 7:30 p.m., Dearborn Heights
Board Members Present: Mike Rey, Jennifer Smith,
Lisa Sielski, Rich Kocan, Sarah Cassette, John Clor,
Bill Smith, Tracey Rey, Mike Sove
Board Members Absent: Jeff Beyar
Mike Rey, President – Brought the meeting to order
and introduced the board members who were present.
Mike then called up John Clor of Ford Performance, who
introduced the keynote speaker, retired Ford designer
Mark Kelly, who was the lead designer on the 1979
Mustang Indy Pace Car.
Kelly said he started his Ford career in July 1962. He
brought along various items that he shared with the
members before launching a PowerPoint presentation to
show his original artwork of some of his 1979 Mustang
Indy Pace Car designs. He traced the history of his work
with Ford’s training program, plus work on the Mustang I
Concept, which he called “the Mustang before there was a
Mustang.” He also showed the group photos of some of
the 1979 Mustang Indy Pace Car memorabilia that he has
collected over the years.
Mike Rey thanked Mark Kelly for his presentation, then
introduced guest speakers, Steve White and Mark Kulwik
from SAAC-MCR. Steve talked about his club’s Show &
Go event June 12-13. The Show is held at Ford WHQ on
June 12, and the Go portion is held June 13 on-track at
Waterford Hills. Registration forms were made available to
the members, or interested parties were asked to go to the
SAAC-MCR website for event information. Steve then
thanked MOCSEM members for helping out at SAACMCR events, and asked that if members would like to
Mike Rey retuned to the podium and announced that the
location for this year’s Mustang Memories show will not be
at the Ford Product Development center, as previously
announced. The PDC lot will not be available for the show
for at least five years possibly 10 due to construction at
the site. Instead, Memories is now back at Ford World
Headquarters. There have been some changes at the
WHQ location since our last show there, so there was a
site visit last week to assess how the WHQ lot will work.
Mike said MOCSEM can fit approximately 900 cars at the
WHQ lot for the show, but we will not be able to get to
1,000 cars. Some changes will be needed in the midway
as well, and more entrances in and out of this facility were
requested. A request that food trucks be allowed at WHQ
was approved by Ford. New event post cards will be
available at the May 14 Gateway Classic Cars event in
Dearborn. An email announcement will also be issued
soon to all members asking for help during this event.
Board Reports
Jennifer Smith, Vice President – No report
Lisa Sielski, Secretary – No report
Rich Kocan, Treasurer – Reported on the club’s
current finances and balances
Sarah Cassette, Membership – Announced that our
current paid membership is just under 600
Bill Smith, Trustee – No report

Tracey Rey, Merchandise – No report
Mike Rey then asked John Clor to help distribute
membership certificates. The Certificate Presentation
covered members with 5 years, 10 years and 20 years in
MOCSEM. Members who have reached those number of
years as a club member were recognized with a
MOCSEM Certificate. Mike said the certificate program is
now current, and will be kept up to date during each
monthly meeting.
New-member introductions were requested, and Tony
Conrad from Livonia; Kevin Fisher from Plymouth
Township; and Sam Richert from New Boston
responded. A warm MOCSEM welcome was requested
for these new members in attendance. Also, a
“W elcome Back” was given to John Jennings, a
representative for the Yellow Mustang Registry, and Dave
Jones, a representative for the Red Mustang Registry –
whose respective clubs have challenged each other in the
“Color War” at this year’s Mustang Memories show to see
which secures the most show field registrations.
When the request went out for any Swap & Sell items,
there was no sales activity to report. Some member
questions were asked of Mike Rey, and all were
answered.
50/50 and Free Dinner Winners – There was no
collection this evening; no winner of The Bucket was
announced. Dennis Russell and Phi Smith won free
dinners for the next membership meeting.
There being no further business, the General Meeting
was adjourned. The next meeting will be held on
Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Motor City Solutions.
--- Respectfully submitted by Lisa Sielski, Secretary
This is a month when there seems to be so much to do for
most of us: Weddings, Graduations, Vacations, etc. With
that said, one must be careful to take the time to plan for
all the things that add joy to our lives. And if you are
reading this, then your Mustang surely is high on the list.
If you cannot find something car-related to do on any
given summer weekend in metro Detroit, then you simply
aren’t looking. We were lucky enough to have a private
invitation to the Mustang Corral at the Detroit Grand Prix
rd
th
th
June 3 , 4 and 5 directly from the race organizers.
Then we were treated to the Roush Open House on June
th
9 , which is always a good time. Our June General
Meeting is being hosted by Motor City Solutions, who not
only has opened their doors for us but also is giving us a
tour of their shop and will even provide dinner for us.
Guest speaker (and the MOCSEM board member who will
actually be conducting the meeting) is our own Newsletter
Editor John Clor of Ford Performance, who will be
presenting one of his ever-popular “Just Ask!” sessions.

Our Grosse Ile Cruise to the Ford Yacht Club is planned
th
for Friday, June 24 , with the Downriver “Fort Street
th
Cruise” set for the next day, Saturday, June 25 with our
own “Ponies in the Park.” Yes, we have Kennedy
Memorial Park reserved for MOCSEM members to come
and park for a while or to go out and cruise – all based
from a nice, shaded park on grass. It’s a beautiful setting
in which to spend the day with friends and Mustangs, and
a great way to enjoy the cruise and see cars of all makes,
models and years roll along on Fort Street.
Of course, this is MOCSEM so you’ll find many more
events listed on the calendar on our web site. I have had
some requests for the club to get involved in local cruise
nights. I love cruise nights, so as it has been said, “Many
hands make light work,” I am reaching out to any and all of
you to help with setting these up.

Don’t forget about the 7th Annual Car Show at St. John
Catholic Church in Howell in early July. Although it is a
multi-marque show, this year they will be giving out 20
different awards including “Best Mustang.” Plus there’s
a silent auction, live music and five raffle drawings for
$100 each just for show car entrants – which sounds
like a great incentive to register!
We have members all over metro Detroit, and not just on
the West Side. It would be great if some of you would
share with the club your favorite place to cruise and hang
out. Please get me any details you can and I will get them
listed on the club calendar. And no, you don’t have to wait
for weekend outings. The local cruise nights can be any
night of the week at nearly any establishment.
As you’d expect, planning is in full swing for this year’s
Mustang Memories show. As you’ve all heard by now, the
venue has been changed from the Ford Product
Development Center – we are now back at Ford World
Headquarters! Pass the word to help us make sure that
everyone is aware. I can tell you that Mike and the
MOCSEM board have gone to great lengths to secure the
new venue and get the word out about the change.
with as many people and spoke at as many gatherings
as I could over those jam-packed four days.
New this year was a special “Meet & Greet” that
Carlisle Events hosted on my behalf for club principals
where I was able to give a presentation on the
enthusiast outreach program that I manage for Ford. It
really helped me make and strengthen more club
connections than ever before.
Even if it turns out to be less than 1,000 cars this year, our
Mustang Memories is one show you won’t want to miss.
Better still, enjoy it in a much deeper way by volunteering
to help us host this well-known, world-class show. Help is
always needed, so step up and volunteer. It’s fun and
satisfying to give back to a club that gives so much to its
members!
So saddle up, get out there and ride your pony! Summer
goes by fast . . .try to make the most of it.

Sorry I’m behind schedule again
getting this month’s newsletter out –
the Carlisle Ford Nationals, my “Ford
Performance Corner” column for the MCA’s Mustang
Times magazine, and my work putting together “The
Accelerator” all came due at the same time this month.
The huge annual Ford Nationals down in Carlisle,
Pennsylvania, is the “Super Bowl” of events for me in
my work as the Enthusiast Communications Manager
for Ford Performance. There simply isn’t another single
venue where I can interact with more Ford and
Mustang enthusiast clubs in a single place over a single
extended weekend, so I covered as much ground, met
It was suggested that, with only around a quarter of our
MOCSEM membership sharing membership in the
Mustang Club of America, perhaps I should reprint my
monthly Mustang Times Ford Performance Corner
column on these pages. While that would sure make
things easier for me, I’m not quite certain doing that
would be the best way for me to support both clubs.
One thing I DO share here is MOCSEM member
involvement with events and happenings in the Ford
world – especially when our club members appear in
my Enthusiasts section of FordPerformance.com.
Remember when I told you about how your MOCSEM
membership really puts you on the inside track to
experience some pretty cool and unique things that
most other clubs simply can’t do? I mentioned an
example of when Ford looks to MOCSEM to find owner
cars to attend local Ford-affiliated events. You’ll recall
we got a request for a MOCSEM owner willing to

“John, this is what Mr. Ford signed,” Bob wrote in an
email to me with photos of the dash signature. “The car
came home looking like a show car. Thanks for the
opportunity!”
No, Rob – thank YOU for being a MOCSEM member,
providing your vehicle information to the club and
answering the call to support Ford when needed!
Remember during my Board Report a few meetings
ago how I told you that if you sent me photos of your
Mustang(s) and a story about your car(s), that I’d
feature you in the “Ford Fan Spotlight” both in our “Fast
News from Ford Performance” email blast that goes out
to a quarter-million fans every Thursday, and also on
FordPerformance.com? Well, ask MOCSEM member
and Ford retiree Jerry Cuper if I was kidding.
May. Well, MOCSEM’s Rob Betea of Warren stepped
up and volunteered the use of his beautiful red 1996
Mustang Coupe to be displayed alongside a Race Red
2106 Mustang GT at the JDRF Gala. When rain had
him second-guessing his decision on delivery day, Ford
had DST Industries pick up Rob’s ’66 in an enclosed
trailer for transport to the event. Turns out Rob not only
received a photo of Edsel Ford II next to his car as a
keepsake from the event, but Edsel even agreed to
Rob’s request to sign the car’s dash panel. And as an
Cuper’s very own Fast News “Fan Spotlight” promo
opened with “We often cross paths with Jerry Cuper at
our local Mustang Owners Club of SouthEastern
Michigan (MOCSE) membership meeting . . . ” and his
own write-up now lives under “Fan Spotlight” in the
Enthusiasts section on FordPerformance.com, where
you can read it and share it with friends, as promised.
“John, thanks for the great article,” Jerry said in his
email to me. “I really appreciate it!”
No, Jerry – I really appreciate YOU sending it to me!
added bonus, the ’66 even received a professional
detailing from DST!
And all of this comes on the heels of Jim Baldwin’s
wonderful story about winning a MOCSEM drawing to
attend the Ford Performance Racing School out in Utah
that we featured as the cover story in last month’s issue
of The Accelerator. So many people enjoyed that
submission that I decided to promo it in a Fast News eblast and post it in the Enthusiasts Newsroom of
FordPerformance.com, where it got thousands of clicks.

“Hello, John,” Jim wrote me in an email. “Great articles
in the MOCSEM newsletter and FordPerformance.com.
Thanks for your help and input getting the story of my
experience at the school out there. Hope to meet up
with you soon, maybe at Mustang Memories!”
So you see, you really need to get out to come to the
MOCSEM meetings and events, read The Accelerator
and check MOCSEM.com often to find out about all
that’s going on. And yes, after my own guest speaking
appearance at Motor City Solutions this month, I’ve

No, Jim – thank YOU for writing that up, getting your
photos together and sending it all to me!
Notice a pattern here? Yes, I can only take our member
stories to the next level after you first make the effort to
get them to me . . . so who will be next?
Speaking of next, there are more cool benefits from
being a member MOCSEM here in Ford’s hometown.
How many of you have signed up for that unbeatable
Woodward Dream Cruise offer from my friend Mary
Mitchell of Campbell Marketing? Her Campbell team is
hosting an event called Motor City Madness on
Saturday, August 20th, when 10 lucky MOCSEM
members can volunteer to drive select Ford VIP guests
up and down Woodward in your Mustang in exchange
for FREE parking right on Woodward, complete with inand-out access, a free lunch, bleacher seating for
private cruise-watching and even port-potties on-site!
Once we get the 10 diver-volunteers, MOCSEM earns
a $500 donation for one of our club’s many charities.
It’s a sweet deal for all -- so what are you waiting for?
Looking for something special to do over the 24 Hours
of Le Mans race weekend? How about a stopping by
The Henry Ford at Greenfield Village to witness the Le
Mans race LIVE during The Henry Ford Giant Screen
Experience? Stop by the museum to catch live
coverage of the 24 Hours of Le Mans FREE on the
giant screen on Saturday, June 19 (8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.)
and Sunday, June 19 (8:00-9:30 a.m.). The events are
sponsored by The Henry Ford and Ford Performance,
with special guest speakers attending on both days! So
membership meeting back at Warren Valley: We’ll have
none other than Ralph Arning, our longtime Mustang
superstar from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. You
won’t want to miss his presentation and Q & A session!
Bottom line is, if I can find time to write stuff for the
club – even if it’s a bit late – then so can you. And if I
can get to some MOCSEM meetings and events every
once in a while with my crazy Ford work-and-travel
schedule, then you should be able to as well. After all,
your MOCSEM membership becomes more rewarding
the more you become involved. It’s just like what my
wife, Jenny, says to me when I complain that I again
didn’t win the Powerball Lottery: “Your chances to win
really improve if you actually buy a ticket!”

MOCSEM MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Then the negotiations started. We were able to talk him
down some – but it was not quite enough. We needed
to get it for $500 less than his “bottom line,” but he just
wouldn't budge that extra $500. That's when a good
friend stepped in: He lent us the other $500 so that we
could buy the car!
I now owned a 1995 Laser Red 5.0-liter Mustang GT
which we happily drove home that same day from
Columbus. The owner’s reason for selling? His dad told
him he had too many cars. Is there such a thing as too
many cars? That's like having too many dogs!
Terry Worful Treats Her 1995 Mustang GT Like Gold
Terry Worful’s ‘Stuck’ on Her 95 Mustang GT
The first Mustang I ever drove had a saddle. It was a
rescue horse from the real Mustang round up that I
helped break to ride. Ever since then, it breaks my
heart to see a Mustang not being taken care of.
About four years ago, my husband Jerry and I went to
the Columbus Spring Swap meet looking for a daily
driver to replace our dying Cougar. We looked at
several cars there but found nothing really worth the
kind of money that was being asked for those cars.
When I got home I did some research on the Mustang’s
VIN. Turns out this was a dealer fleet car from Indiana.
She has never seen salt! It had a new stainless
exhaust, new brakes and a new clutch.
Back then, buying a Mustang never really crossed my
mind, because – and of course I now stand corrected –
I thought most Mustang owners I knew were kind if
stuck-up. BOY WAS I WRONG ABOUT THAT!
The first thing I did was to get rid of the factory wheels
and I upgraded the look with a set of the factory 05
Bullitt wheels, which Jerry stripped and polished. Next,
we replaced the front fascia to get rid of the million
stone chips.
As we were walking back to one of the buildings at the
Columbus Swap, Jerry spotted a metallic red 1995
Mustang GT hat was for sale. It looked great, but the
price listed was more cash than we brought with us.
I almost passed on it because of the price alone, and
the fact that it was a Mustang which has that tight
owner community that I wasn’t sure I wanted to be a
part of all that at the time. Then, one of Jerry's friends
came by and talked with us about the Mustang.
He said it was worth the price that was being asked and
that if we didn't buy it, then he would. So we called the
phone number on the Mustang, and the owner came
out to the car to meet us and let us test drive it around
the parking lot. Hey, I must admit it was FUN!

Jerry had won a Hurst shifter during Memories, so we
installed that, but there was no bolt included in the kit,
so he used the factory bolt. Bad move: It didn't fit the
Hurst shifter quite right, and it eventually worked loose
and fell into the trans – and we blew first gear. On the
way to get it fixed, we lost second, and it would not shift
into third. When we got it to the shop I got lucky, as
someone decided to give me all the trans parts that I
needed out of a transmission that he had swapped out
of his own Mustang. Thank god, as the final cost to me
wound up being beer to cover the labor needed to fix it.
To dress it up, I painted the embossed Mustang under
the hood gold to match the dealer-installed gold
badging. Then I went through the whole motor and
repainted everything that I could reach with the help of
some long artist’s paint brushes.
Last spring I had her repainted Laser Red, but I asked
the painter to add double the amount of gold metallic in
the paint.
The result is a laser Red that is much richer than the
factory color – it even fooled John Clor! (But I think he
really likes it!)
This winter Jerry took off the plenum to polish that, too.
I’m now officially one of those “stuck-up Mustang
people” – and I’m PROUD OF IT! (Jerry says it keeps
me young.) I can’t wait for Mustang Memories!

SHELBY, HERTZ & FORD UNVEIL
50TH ANNIVERSARY SHELBY GT-H
NEW YORK, NY – Shelby American, Hertz and Ford
Motor Company launch 50th Anniversary Edition Ford
Shelby GT-H.

Shelby GT-H celebrates 50th anniversary of
Ford Shelby Hertz GT350-H “Rent-A-Racer”
Special run of 140 units can be rented
exclusively through Hertz’s Adrenaline
Collection at select airport locations
Shelby GT-H combines great performance in
classic Shelby and Hertz livery
Fifty years after the Shelby GT350-H was introduced,
Ford Motor Company, Shelby American and Hertz
unveiled a special run of performance-modified 2016
Ford Mustang GTs named the Shelby GT-H that will be
available for rent beginning Memorial Day weekend. As
a throwback to the famed Shelby GT350-H “Rent-ARacer” program of the 1960s, a total of 140 2016 Ford
Shelby GT-H’s will be available exclusively through the
Hertz Adrenaline Collection at select airport locations in
the continental United States.
Shelby American, Ford and Hertz repeated history to
give the 2016 Ford Shelby GT-H a very classic,
muscular look with additional performance capabilities.
“Our goal was to give everyone a chance to add some
fun to their travel with a distinctive American pony car,”
said Doug White, Ford Performance Parts manager.
“So Ford Performance and Shelby American sharpened
the handling, improved the power, sweetened the
exhaust note and added distinctive Hertz styling to the
Mustang. Anyone who rents a limited edition Ford
Shelby GT-H will enjoy a very special driving
experience.”

available through the Hertz Adrenaline Collection visit

may also be reserved through travel agents or by
calling Hertz toll-free at (800) 654-3131.
SHELBY GT350 GETS NEW COLORS,
FEATURES FOR 2017 MODEL YEAR
Although some enthusiasts are not aware of it, the
2016 Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang doesn’t come
standard with the Track Package and its aluminum strut
tower brace; rear spoiler; oil, transmission, and
differential coolers; and the MagneRide damping setup.
But that changes for the 2017 model year GT350.
In addition to all that now-standard equipment, buyers
of the 2017 GT350 can add an Electronics Package
with SYNC 3, voice-activated Nav, and a nine-speaker
audio system upgrade (which is an increase from
2016’s seven speakers), or a Convenience Package,
which features the same goodies, but also swaps out
the manual set of Recaros for power leather seats.
Ford Performance is also offering three new colors –
Ruby Red Metallic, Lightning Blue, and Grabber Blue –
on what is being called “the most track-capable, raceready Mustang ever built.” The only catch is that Deep
Impact Blue and Competition Orange are no longer
available. Somehow, Ford has found a way to make
the GT350 even more attractive than it already was!
