can be easily incorporated into home
landscapes. During this walk, he will
show you how Olbrich has replaced
a number of traditional lawns with

Mexican Heirloom
Vegetables: An Olbrich Herb
Garden Lecture and Walk
Wednesday, September 14, 6:30-8:30 pm
Many of our most beloved vegetables
and flowers - including tomatoes and
peppers, zinnias, and dahlias - trace
their domestic origins to Mexico and
Central America. Over time, humans
bred these plants to stabilize favorable
traits and then passed their varieties
down from generation to generation,
creating heirlooms. Heirloom varieties
can be tastier than modern commercial
varieties and are often regionally
adapted to suit particular soils and
climates. Join Olbrich Horticulturist Erin
Presley for a stroll through the Herb
Garden to see heirloom Mexican herbs
and vegetables growing, and then
continue the discussion with an indoor
presentation on techniques for growing
Mexican vegetables, the history and
stories behind selected varieties, and
recipes for you to try at home. Limited
space; register early.

The Greater Madison Writing Project,
in partnership with Olbrich Botanical
Gardens, is sponsoring camps for
young writers. Young writers use
Olbrich’s gardens and conservatory
as inspiration for writing. Through
brainstorming, drafting, revising, and
editing, led by experienced teachers
and working with peers, participants
produce a finished piece of writing that
is then published.
Writers share their favorite pieces of
writing from the week with their families
during an evening celebration on the
last day. Space is limited; register early.
