Health Tip:
Goals
Goals are a key part of any program where
you want to move from one point to another.
Without a specific goal, it is more than challenging to get where you’re going!
One of the best ways to ensure you are setting
goals in a structured and positive way is to use
the SMART method. Your goals should be:
• Specific
• Measureable
• Attainable
• Realistic
• Timely
For example, if your goal was to reduce your
body fat by 5% you would need to look at
breaking that down. Setting your goal for that
reduction in body fat over a two week period would be specific and measureable but
it would not be attainable or realistic. Writing
out what you are reaching for and then breaking it down into smaller, workable pieces is
the most effective way to ensure you will see
a successful end.
The next time you say, “I would like to do that”,
think of how you can make it happen and set
a time frame to make that goal a reality. With
careful and thoughtful goal setting you can
make your dreams a reality and feel accomplished in doing so.

Seeking Committee
Members for Building
a Permanent
Preschool Space!
For around a decade, the MLCA Preschool has been providing local three- and four-year-old children with a fun learning
environment and a chance to meet neighbourhood friends.
So far, the MLCA Preschool has been housed in local schools.
For many years it was located at Altadore School, then it
moved to St. James School, and for the 2014-15 school year
it is back at Altadore School.
While there are many benefits to a school location, the growing population of young children in our local schools means
that, soon, there may no longer be a spare classroom available for our beloved Preschool program. We need a new
home for our Preschool. We need a permanent home for our
Preschool.
To solve this problem, the MLCA Board of Directors is looking
into putting a new building (either a new construction or a
portable) on the MLCA hall grounds. This is a big project, and
we’ll need lots of volunteers.
Can you help? Perhaps you have building experience? Or
maybe fundraising experience? Or maybe you’d like to help
put shovels in the ground when we get closer to the date?
If you would like to get involved, I am currently seeking
people to volunteer on the “MLCA Permanent-Home-forPreschool Committee”. (I am also currently seeking a less unwieldy name for this committee!) If you would like to get involved, please send an email to Susan Vukadinovic at play@
mardaloop.com.

e would like to introduce one of the oldest businesses in the Marda Loop area,
Marda Loop Family Dentistry.
Our dental office
has provided excellent dental care
Our practice has to the wonderful
people in the community since the
grown together
1960s. In 2001 Dr.
with the
Alan Pantazi took
over the practice
neighbourhood... from Dr. Viktor Sopkiw, who has been
a dentist in the area
for over 30 years.
We added 7 days/week emergency service for the
convenience of people from Marda Loop and all
over Calgary.
Our practice has grown together with the neighbourhood and in 2006 the office found a larger,
brand new place at Marda Station Plaza - just a
few meters from the old location - next to the
Petro Canada gas station.
Dr. Pantazi has over 20 years of dental experience
which allows us to provide a wide range of dental services from emergencies to complete smile
makeovers. We also provide dental hygiene services through our friendly and skilled dental hygienists. We pride ourselves on being able to serve all
ages -- being a true family dentistry office.
We believe in "no pain dentistry", so our priority
is to make our patients comfortable during dental procedures. People enjoy coming to our dental office because we get the job done but most
importantly we provide a friendly environment.
Our waiting area is fun with a TV and a play area
for kids, but don't get too comfortable because
within a few minutes you will be ready for your
appointment.
Our office offers cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, tooth coloured fillings, crowns, bridges,
veneers, partials, dentures, extractions and more!
We always welcome new patients to our office.

“Seniors
in the Loop”
Update
Here’s what the Marda Loop Seniors have been up to
over the past few months….
2508 Richmond Road SW
403.686.2225
www.dqsdental.ca
At their April gathering, David McKee, Community Engagement Coordinator at the Better Business Bureau,
began his presentation to the “Seniors in the Loop” with
recent reports in local newspapers about various scams
and misleading advertising. He clarified that although
Seniors are not typical victims, they could be more attractive targets because of their desire to please and
trust and the likelihood of their isolation, fear, physical
or mental insecurity. He encouraged Seniors to report
any incidents they may experience or hear about. He
described the known characteristics of scammers and
gave the Seniors resources and tips on how to protect
themselves and their assets. (Thank You for that excellent and very useful visit, David, and we hope to have
you back in the Fall to present the internet scam report
you are working on.)
Earlier that morning, Janette led a gentle fit and stretch
session which certainly helped stimulate the brain and
keep the Seniors alert for David’s presentation. (Thank
you Janette!)
The May gathering began with a yoga session and since
we have not had much time for hobbies in the past few
months, we focused on gardening, spring clean-up and,
at last - a knitting workshop. All this was facilitated by
our own experienced Seniors – Otto Hammer and Roger
Robinson (who, although not able to be present, ensured that he had some seeds and plants for us to take
away!) shared their tremendous gardening knowledge
with us and Barb Stuart shared her passion for knitting

is so fortunate to have Freddy Taylor and Phil Streifel among their members. These folk have been associated with Stampede for many many years. So Freddy
brought along her friends from the Calgary Stampede
Promotion Committee (Thank you Freddy, John, Fran,
Verna and Ashley)! . Together they set up a branding
station, cow patty throws and line dancing sessions. Phil
invited his musician buddies who sang us a few Western
oldies and got us to sing some along too, while Phil attempted to organize us in a round of square dancing!
What a hoot that turned out to be! All in all, it was yet
another enjoyable gathering as these pictures taken by
Mary Figley (Thank you Mary!) will attest.
Last, but not least, thank you to all of you who came out
over the past months and helped make our gatherings
so enjoyable and worthwhile.
“Seniors in the Loop” will be meeting again on September 8th between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. Keep in touch for
details on the MLCA website.

tone, to improve technique or just to become fitter and
stronger.
It is a fun and effective way to get those results you
want, and because water is 800 times denser than air,
you are most likely to get there a lot quicker than any
other workout!
Improve swimming skill, ability and endurance through
distance swimming, stroke correction and interval training. Must be able to swim 75m continuously and at least
2x 50m of two of the following: freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke or butterfly. Good for the recreational
swimmer who would like to improve their strength and

Saturdays from 9-10am, July 5, 12, 19 & 26
Cost - $40.00
The program is designed to further develop strokes
chosen by the swimmer in consultation with the Water
Safety Instructor, and increase swimming distances and
proficiency.
The entire session is dedicated to stroke work with drills
and stroke analyses etc... most drills are just 25m- 50m
but don’t be fooled... if you are doing it right – focused
swimming - it will leave you feeling like you swam 4K in
an hour!
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-8pm beginning July 8th or
August 5th
Cost - $80.00
Masters Swim

with and without assistance. Other skills such as breathing techniques, flutter kick and front and back swimming may be introduced depending on participant’s
abilities.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-8pm beginning July 8th or
August 5th
Cost - $80.00
Red Cross Swim Strokes (Stroke improvement)
Red Cross Swim Strokes is a stand-alone stroke development program for adults and teens (ages 16 and up).
Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons
Private swim lessons give the student(s) focused, oneon-one attention. Instructors are able to concentrate on
the needs of the individual child. Drills can be customized to the skill level of the student. As a result, students
tend to advance faster in a private lesson. Discipline can
also be tailored to the student’s challenges, leading to
a better learning environment for both student and instructor. The lesson can also meet the personal goals of
the student and parents.
Private swim lessons are available at a variety of times
throughout the summer. Please email poolmanager@
mardaloop.com for more information or to register.

Seeking
Playground
Committee
Members!
As the volunteer Director of Play, I’ve been
hearing from many neighbours over the past
year about various ideas for improving our
local playgrounds.
It sounds like community members are keen
to make some improvements!
If you would like to get involved, I am currently seeking people to volunteer on the
MLCA Playground Committee. Send an email
to me at [email protected], and together
we can kick-start a playground improvement
project.
You can also email me if you’d like to share
your ideas for improving our local playgrounds. Which playground would you like
to see updated? What are your ideas for making it better?
In the May 2014 edition of our community
newsletter I asked for feedback on whether
the MLCA should ask the City of Calgary for an
outdoor skatepark in our community. I am also
still seeking input on that idea. Would you like
a skatepark in Marda Loop? Where would you
put one?
Our community has many great assets for
local children, and I’d love to hear from you
about how we can make them even better.

MARDA LOOP COMMUNITIES ASSOCIATION
Indulge 2014
On Saturday May 24th, 2014 the Marda Loop Communities Association hosted its annual fundraiser. It was
a smashing success due in large part to the vendors in
the community and of course the community members that attended. The event was bigger this year; the
organizing committee ordered a larger tent given that
the event had sold out in previous years and crossed
their fingers that it would do so again. And it did! The
event hosted over 500 vendors and guests. This year
was the 10th year for Indulge and it set a new record
with over $43,000 raised.
We are able to put on the event only because we have
some wonderful vendors in the neighbourhood who
donate their time, staff, and delicious food. So they deserve the biggest thanks of all. They are:
• Devour Catering
• Fergus & Bix
• Fiasco Gelato
• Fresh Kitchen
• Jelly Modern Dougnuts
• Masaya
• Original Joe’s
• San Remo
• Satiate Catering
• Springbank Cheese Co.
• The Loop
• The Trop; and
• Tres Marias
A million thanks. Please visit these vendors and let
them know you appreciate all that they do for the
community. Thanks to Scott from Redback and Jordan from Charton Hobbs who work with us to get the
wine and who put together a great service team for
the night. They even bussed tables this year! Thanks
too to Highlander Wine & Spirits for their continued

support. Thanks as well to the Great Western Brewing
Company, Village Brewery, Wild Rose Brewery, and Big
Rock Brewery for supplying beer and serving staff for
the event.
Another reason for Indulge’s continued success is the
cash sponsors. The MLCA and the Indulge Committee
would like to thank our Signature Sponsor, Optimum
Dentistry and Dr. James Trofimuk for supporting this
event year after year. Our Community Partners this year
were Brookfield Residential, The Heather Company,
RectangleDesign Inc., Ronmor Developers Inc., and Surrideo Orthodontics. And finally the Friends of Indulge,
Ballistic Echo, Millenium Mortgage, Pediatric Dentistry,
and Valentine Volvo. And thanks to Marc Doll who paid
for all of the great pizza at the end of the night.
The tent was staked on “higher ground” due to the fact
that it was literally swamped last year and we had to
drain it out. Despite best intentions, the downpour Saturday afternoon saw water in the tent again this year,
but due to the tireless efforts of the volunteers and
hall staff by the time the event started at 6 everything
looked perfect.
Thank you to Barb Bexson and her team, who worked all
day (and night and the next day) and to Hall Manager
Lindsay Jardine for all of his hard work.
Thank you to Janet Pliszka and Amy from Visual Hues
who spent the evening making sure everyone got a
glamorous photo taken at the front door. The sun shone
this year and we look forward to seeing the pictures.
Thank you to Michelle Lytle for managing the ticket
sales, the logistics for the event and welcoming the
guests. It is a thankless job, especially when you are getting 50 calls on the day of the sold out event asking if
you could “sneak one more in”. So thank you for all of

THE
BRITISH
your help in getting us to another sold out event and
making sure it all ran so smoothly. Thanks too to Marc
and Doug for working at the door.
As a result of weeks of work by Mikelle Ethier and
Amy McKee, there was an amazing table of silent auction items and the live auction was a success again
this year. We were so fortunate to have a professional
auctioneer, Chuck Christensen who volunteered his
services and that of his “spotter” Dean. They both enjoyed the event and promised to do it again next year.
The frosting to the great event was the band Black
Light. Thank you Amy and Mikelle for planning such a
flawless set of auctions, and frankly for being so helpful, so competent and so wonderful.
Thanks too Heather and Amy of The Heather Company for the very modern “living room”.
Thank you Lisa Conboy who does so much to make
the event happen: organizing the vendors, ordering
the wine, getting all of the permits and licenses, making sure the tent is set up etc. etc. I don’t know where
you get all of your energy, but the MLCA is lucky to
have you.
Thank you, Shannon Wilson, for managing the budget and the money and for keeping us on track. Thank
you for managing your group of accountants the
night of the event. It is a long night for everyone and
you all have to work while the party carries on around
you. Special thanks to your team: Paul Heidebrect,
Vanessa D’Souza, Michelle Rhodes, Heather Bhatty
and Stephanie Beekhuizen.
And finally thank you to Doug Anderson, honorary
committee member, for all of the work getting out
the message about Indulge and helping us on so
many fronts.
This is my last year working on Indulge, however I
plan to attend for years to come. I am so grateful to
have had such wonderful committees over the last
three years. I trust that Indulge 2015 will be the best
Indulge ever.

cSPACE King Edward
Project Updates
by Casey Hughes
Engagement Manager, cSPACE Projects
p 403.476.2025 x203 | c 403.874.8674,
[email protected]
While the King Edward project site has been a little quiet
over the last month with demolition of the mid-century
wings and hazardous material abatement wrapped up,
there has been a flurry of activity in preparation for the official groundbreaking this fall. cSPACE staff have been busy
on all fronts with fundraising events, a tenant call for submissions, information sessions, a collaborative design project with our anchor tenants and Mount Royal University,
and finalizing the permits needed to begin construction
this fall.
The King Edward site will remain quiet now that the initial
work of preparing the eastern parcel of land for subdivision is complete. The land is being subdivided and sold for
housing, which required the mid-century wings to be demolished before the main project begins. We took the opportunity to remove all the hazardous materials from those
buildings and the heritage school at the same time.
After the dust settled from our demolition and abatement
activity in March, two small sections of the 1950s and ’60s
additions remain standing and attached to the original
sandstone building. On the north side, the doorway with
the mural of William Aberhart leads to an area housing the
electrical equipment that will stay until full construction
starts. On the south facade, a wall section propped up by
steel girders remains. Unfortunately, heritage buildings always give surprises and this wall was bonded directly to the
sandstone in the ’50s. Removing the wall could risk destabilizing the south sandstone facade and would be incredibly
24
costly. After careful consideration, the construction team is
going reinforce this wall from the inside, remove the girders and enclose it with the same artisanal steel that the new
west wing will have.
Over two nights in late May, cSPACE King Edward opened
its doors for a “Spring Reveal”, a fundraising event that celebrated the removal of the mid-century wings from the
former sandstone school, and the partial restoration of the
historic auditorium. A talented team of artists reimagined
the auditorium using design elements from our construction site, photographic banners, glass art, projectors and
100-year-old blueprints of the original proscenium stage.
Guests were enchanted by fantastic performances by La
Caravan Dance Theatre and Calgary’s first poet laureate Kris
Demeanor. Artist Mark Vazquez-MacKay adorned the auditorium space with paintings and verse. Colin Menzies from
Studio C brought the perspective of a future tenant, giving
guests a glimpse into the role that the King Edward will play
in community development. cSPACE commissioned artist
collective Bee Kingdom Glass to create a beautiful series of
custom glass pieces that enlivened the event space. We are
incredibly thankful to have such a strong supporters who
share our vision for the King Edward as a powerful creative
hub serving arts, culture and community organizations.
With four info sessions recently completed, we are excited
with the response from a diverse group of arts, community
and cultural non-profit organizations across Calgary. Orga-

nizations that expressed interest in becoming new cSPACE
King Edward tenants ranged from craft and theatre, to
photography and cultural immersion. As we close in on our
anticipated groundbreaking, we are eager to identify additional tenants who will contribute to King Edward’s launch
in 2016 as an innovative platform for creative communitybuilding. Our Tenant Call for Submissions process closes
July 31—please visit our website www.cspaceprojects.com
to review the RFP package and contact us for more information.
Additional opportunities for short-term space, including
co-work opportunities, ‘hot desks’, meeting and rehearsal/
performance/event space, will be posted in 2015.
cSPACE is excited to launch the first video of a new threepart series “A Place for People at the Creative Edge of
Change” that showcases the bold vision for cSPACE King
Edward. The collaborative film project highlights the three
interconnected goals for redeveloping the King Edward as
an arts hub and incubator:
• Place - restoration and celebration of a 1912 sandstone
school as a community gathering place with creativity
and sustainability at its core
• People - development of a portfolio of creative spaces
that fuel collaboration and connectivity across Calgary’s
communities of artists, social entrepreneurs and nonprofits
• Ideas - launch of a unique incubator for creative entrepreneurship
The micro-film series was written and directed by cSPACE,
filmed and edited by John Kissak of Green Productions Inc
with music by Six Degrees and narrated by Cherie McMaster.
Stay tuned for the second part of the series focused on creative people, to be launched later this summer.
As we work with you towards our official groundbreaking
in the fall, we would like to thank the Marda Loop community for being strong supporters and key partners in our
community-building vision for the King Edward. To stay up

The Pace
Car Program
launching in
Marda Loop!
As we are all aware, speeding and dangerous driving
has been a problem in our community for some time.
Your community association has introduced a few
measures to bring awareness to drivers and are working with our councillors and the City of Calgary to help
us control traffic.
The MLCA is introducing a new grassroots program
that will allow community members to become a part
of the solution to this issue.
What do you have to do to become a Pace Car driver?
It’s simple: all you need to do is sign a pledge form and
you get a window decal for your vehicle. The window
decal is free, but if you would rather a magnet they
are available for a small fee. When you are a Pace Car
driver you are expected to lead by example, and be a
good, safe, courteous driver.
Along with the car decals we are also looking at putting up signage around the community letting people
know that we are a Pace Car community. If you would
like to help by displaying a sign on your property
please contact us to make arrangements.
The official launch of the program will be at the
Marda Loop Communities Association Stampede
Breakfast on Saturday, July 12. We will also be signing
people up at the MLCA booth at this year’s Marda Gras
on Sunday August 10.
If you would like more details, or would like to signup prior to the launch, please contact us at mobility@
mardaloop.com.
And in the meantime remember to drive safely!
What is the Pace Car Program?
The Pace Car program is a simple concept yet the results do work. The idea is to have willing participants
in the community put a decal on their car that shows
they are a Pace Car Driver. As you drive through the
community, slowing for playground zones, driving
carefully on quiet residential streets and actually stopping at that big red sign, people behind you will see
that Pace Car sign and realize that they may have been
driving less than appropriately. It may also help curb
those verbal slights and finger-related gestures that
the Speedy McSpeedsters like to use.
