LIVE
7th Annual Brevard Live Music Awards
By Chris Long
H
oly cow, I can’t believe it’s that
time again. It literally seems like
just yesterday the Brevard Live staff
was gearing up for the unveiling of an
exciting new production -- The Brevard
Live Music Awards. Now, commonly
referred to as The BMAs, our “little”
show was (and still is) merely an attempt to throw a “big city” party for
the hard working members of our
hometown music scene; their friends,
families and fans. It’s just that simple.
But Brevard Live publisher, Heike
Clarke and I had no idea what to expect when the BMA curtain opened for
the first time. In fact, we spent years
discussing whether or not the project
was worth the certain overwhelming
effort required to bring such a production to life. However, we believed in
the local scene and in August 2004,
The 1st Annual Brevard Live Music
Awards ceremony was born.
Since then, thousands of people have attended our (now) annual hometown version
of the Grammys. People get dressed up in
their Sunday best and some even rent limos
for Brevard’s “big night.” Local musicians
perform, win awards and reap the benefits of
merely being nominated in our various categories. But the real winners are the area music fans who are treated to a national-caliber
production. And yes, we have encountered
our fair share of critics along the way
too. “It’s just a popularity contest,”
some nay-sayers have suggested.
To that I can only say, Duh! Welcome to Show Biz 101, kids. “It’s
a rigged farce,” is another criticism I’ve heard. On that
point, I do take offense.
Be sure that contrary to
what any of my
countless critics want to think
of me personally, the fact is, I
have never allowed my name
to be attached to anything that’s
not completely above board. Consequently,
extreme efforts are made to ensure the absolute integrity, accuracy and quality control
surrounding the entire BMA event.
Nobody can really say who “The Best
Kazoo” player is. That’s why our awards
are presented to the “Favorites” in various
categories as voted on by the readers of
Brevard Live. But honestly, in my opinion,
the BMAs aren’t so much about winning.
They’re about a community coming together, celebrating, networking and enjoying an
event that not even other major cities have.
This year’s event will offer musicians
and fans alike the same fun-filled, entertaining experience that they’ve come to expect
from previous BMA ceremonies. After taking a year off in 2009, I will return once
again as this year’s host and the amazing
Danny Morris Band will also reprise their
role as our house band. As is the BMA
tradition, we will also be showcasing live
performances from some of the area’s top
musicians. This year’s performers include
keyboardist Kenny Clarke, vocalist Sybil
Gage, guitarist Jamie Rickett and drummer
Sammy Hill. And yes, let’s not forget about
the dozen awards that will be handed out to
various lucky winners.
It all happens on Monday, August 30th
at 6:30 pm, as always, at Brevard’s Henegar
Center for the Performing Arts in downtown
Melbourne. This will likely be my last year
co-producing and or hosting the show, so
I’m really looking forward to 2010 being the best BMA event ever. Dress to
impress and be ready to experience
an awesome night out. The 7th Annual Brevard Live Music Awards

A New Season Begins
P
ick your highlights of the year
from the blockbuster line-up
at the King Center. And don’t be
afraid it will break your bank. Steven Janicki, Executive Director of
the Maxwell C. King Center for
the Performing Arts, has been running the Brevard’s biggest stage for
a quarter of a century and knows
what’s going on:
“These are challenging times
for our community and we can certainly appreciate that people are
careful with how they spend their
money. This year we are fortunate
to be able to present an exciting
season of diverse and entertaining performing arts at affordable
prices. We have scaled back on the
number of our Broadway shows,
but not on the quality. Our two productions of Fiddler on the Roof and
Mamma Mia are professional equity productions which our community has come to expect at the King
Center. In addition to bringing back
some favorite timeless classics, we
have many artists who will grace
the stage for the first time this season, including the celebrated comedienne/actress Carol Burnett,
the icon singer/songwriter, Amy
Grant (joining her husband, county
music legend, Vince Gill) and the
internationally acclaimed Irish ensemble, Celtic Thunder. With such
an extraordinary season ahead, we
invite Brevard County to enjoy the
best of the performing arts…close
to home.”

Big Brother &
The Holding Company
Adam Lambert
The Glam Tour
B
ig Brother and the Holding Company formed in San Francisco in
1965 as part of the same psychedelic
music scene that produced the Grateful
Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service
and Jefferson Airplane. They are best
known as the band that featured Janis
Joplin as their lead singer. Their 1968
album Cheap Thrills is considered one
of the masterpieces of the psychedelic
sound of San Francisco.
It took a while for band’s followers to accept Janis. Her music was
completely different. Big Brother had
a very experimental and non-conventional sound, but when Janis joined,
they became more conventional musicians, their songs, and the band started
to increase its popularity in the underground San Francisco psychedelic
scene. At the end of the summer of
1968, Joplin announced that she was
leaving the band to form her new band,
later called Kosmic Blues Band.
Big Brother has been touring parttime in different formation of musicians.
A
dam Lambert’s stunning performances on the 2009 season of
American Idol captivated the audience and made him one of the most
exciting artists ever to appear on the
show. During his “Idol” journey he
impressed the judges every week
with songs like “Mad World”, “Ring
of Fire” and “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.” Since the show he has conquered the Billboard charts with his
debut album, “For Your Entertainment” which debuted at No. 3 and is
still going strong.
Opening for Lambert on tour is
fellow ‘Idol’ alumni Allison Iraheta
who recently released her debut album, Just Like You. Come escape
for a few hours and fall into a world
full of glam, drama and excitement.
Adam Lambert is receiving rave reviews for this tour and we are thrilled
that he is making a stop at the King
Center.
Please note that laser light effects may be part of this concert production.

Cole. Backed by a tight rhythm section, the talented trio combines their
life-long love of music and their passion for performance.
Jeff Kashiwa is the driving force
behind The Sax Pack. After many
years performing with the Ripps, followed by tours with Acoustic Alchemy, Chuck Loeb, Special EFX, and his

putting together a premier line-up of
his peers.

Fresh From Bonnaroo
The 8th Wonder of the World
STEVIE WONDER
By Matthew Bretz
Damn it I love Stevie Wonder!
How could you not?
The guy is amazing.
Since age 7 the blind born Wonder has been recording
with Motown records churning out hit after hit after soulful
hit. He is a political activist, an actor, a husband, a father
of 7, an amazing musician and an inspiration to millions of
people the world over. Tonight I get to see him perform not
thirty feet from me and I’m crazy excited about it. I am at the
Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee
As the “waiting” music fades out another melody starts
to filter in and at first I think it must be another recorded song
coming through the loud speakers. But after about twelve
bars Stevie appears on stage playing the meanest, funkiest
melody on a keytar. He continues to plays while two handlers lead him across the stage to his microphone just in time
for the 12 piece band to kick in and away we go with “Did
I Hear You Say You Love Me?” Wonder has gained a lot
of weight in recent years and tonight, just like most nights
lately, he is wearing a large, white, baggy dashiki and pants
to match. His hair has receded quite a bit and although he
still sports long braids they begin halfway across his head
now. None of this matters of course. Not when you are dancing in front of the man that wrote songs in the key of life.
Without stopping Wonder and the crew roll right into
“Master Blaster,” and I already know this is going to be one
of my favorite shows ever.
The energy in the crowd is electric and I have to believe
it’s in no small part to the built in nostalgic feeling we are all
sharing. We are all listening to songs our parents listened to
at our age and we are feeling the same things they did. There
aren’t a lot of artists out there that can cross generational
gaps like this and leave such an amazing impact.
Finally pausing to speak to the audience I get butterflies
waiting to hear Stevie speak. Anytime I come face to face
with an icon it’s the spoken word that cuts me deep. When
an idol speaks it brings them down to human level and I’m
always in awe. I see a lot of people around me waving and
holding their hands up and I have to giggle to myself remembering when a certain president waved to our blind hero a
few years ago.
“As If You Read My Mind,” “Uptight (everything is al-

right),” “For Once in My Life,” the songs just keep coming
and my heart soars higher and higher and just when I think
I can’t get any happier in that moment he rolls into “Higher
Ground”. I flip out, and so does everyone around me. This
song is special to me because its how I discovered Stevie
Wonder. I was a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers fan when I was
younger and the first time I ever heard “Higher Ground” was
on the Mother’s Milk album. I loved it and when I read the
liner notes I learned that it wasn’t originally theirs. I went
to check out the original recording by Stevie and discovered
not only a slew of new amazing music I hadn’t heard before,
but also a number of songs I’d grown up listening to but
never knew the artist.
There are a couple times during the concert that Stevie’s microphone stand fails and the mic drops too low to
hear him, but otherwise the show goes off flawlessly. During “We Want the Funk” Stevie, not satisfied directing only
his gigantic ensemble, decides to direct the entire audience
- roughly 30,000 people - in a two piece chorus mash up.
First he tells all the guys in the crowd to chant “we want the
funk…” in a Barry White style baritone. Then it’s the girls
turn and they are instructed to chant “beep beep, ahhhh…”.
I almost fall over from the sheer sexiness of hearing thousands of female voices in unison. Thank you Mr. Wonder.
About three quarters of the way through Wonder once
again grabs the audience for a sing-along. This time it’s for
the chorus of John Lennon’s “Give Piece A Chance.” Before, during and after the song Stevie takes the opportunity
in front of so many people to share his beliefs on the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as pretty much anything else
he feels strongly about- including the oil spill in the gulf.
Along with this last remark he sends his love and prayers
out to the states surrounding the gulf including Florida.
“My Cherie Amour” and “Do I Do” are huge crowd
pleasers and there are times I can’t even hear Stevie over the
voices in the crowd. What a huge testament to the music that
so many people know every song word for word and note
for note.
Three songs left and Wonder plays, just for me I’m pretty sure, one of the greatest songs of all time - “Superstition.”
At this point I’ve been in the hot sun for three days and I’m
severely dehydrated. It’s probably the only thing keeping
me from peeing myself about now. “Superstition” are you
kidding me? I’m in heaven.

The Column
By Chuck Van Riper
N
Just for Guitar Players
estled in the hills of south east Ohio is a magical
place called the Fur Peace Ranch. It is a guitar camp
started by Jorma Kaukonen. You may remember him from
the bands Jefferson Airplane or Hot Tuna (for all you old
hippies!). The camp has classes with various incredible
teachers. Sometimes they take the camp on the road. Last
week they were in Big Indian, NY. Big Indian is way up
in the Catskills not to far from Woodstock. A few hundred
acres of the town is taken up by the Full Moon Resort.
Rustic cabins in the lush mountains, no phone service or
cable, and great food make for an ideal setting for a guitar
retreat. That’s where I was last week.
My class was with Tommy Emmanuel. I don’t know
if you’ve ever heard Tommy, but if haven’t, check him
out. He is by far one of the premier guitar players on the
planet right now. Think of the best guitar player you’ve
ever heard. Even those guys say “how the hell did he do
that?”. His solo acoustic arrangements are impeccable.
His playing is nothing short of pristine. His technique
is matched by none. He is truly a guitar players’ guitar
player.
A typical day went something like this:
8AM - Breakfast
10AM – Morning Class
12PM – Lunch
2PM – Afternoon Class
6PM – Dinner
8PM – Evening Class
10:30 – Jam Sessions all over the place.
Nothing but playing guitar, all day and all night.
Cool! Now there’s something about playing guitar out in
the woods. My guitars always sound better. They respond
better. It’s almost like they know they’re with family. Like
each tree is a relative they’re glad to see. It makes them
happy. Maybe it’s the synergy of all that wood in one
place.
So, we learned 3 Chet Atkins tunes in three days as a
class. We spent about 8 hours on each tune. On the third
night there was a student concert where each student could
get up and play whatever they wanted. I chose to do a duet
with Tommy on the classic “Freight Train”. You can see
the video on YouTube. Search for “cevr251”. That’s me. A
great time was had by all. Let me know what you think.
All in all, I learned a lot. How to contort ones fingers
in an almost inhuman way to play impossible chords. How
22 - Brevard Live August 2010
to play fills so fast that they sound like one long note. I
watched Tommy as he helped some of the people who were
having a hard time. I could relate to the patience required
to explain to some-one techniques that were so simple to
him. I was reminded of what it was like to struggle with
new material.
Punchline of the week:
I attended this event with a friend of mine, Andrew,
whom I have known for many years, from back in our
Ohio days. He had over the past few years become a
vegetarian. Like hardcore. Not even chicken or fish.
Every day, everyone would have meals together in the
dining hall, including the teachers. The chefs at the resort
were very accommodating and made a vegetarian dish
for Andrew every night. One evening he had his plate
filled with salads, greens and fruit. “What’s that?” asked
Jorma. “Oh, I’m a vegetarian”, replied Andrew. Jorma,
being the consummate philosopher and meat and potatoes

eats!”

The show that revolutionized musical theatre is
coming to The King Center. Produced by CATSEye, LLC, the national
tour of CATS is the only
production in North America sanctioned by Andrew
Lloyd Webber. With original direction by Trevor
Nunn and choreography
by Gillian Lynne this is the
CATS credited with the
British invasion of Broadway. The national tour of
CATS recently celebrated
its 27th anniversary season, holding its place as
the longest continuously
touring Broadway musical in history.
On May 11, 1981,
CATS opened at the New
London Theatre in the
West End. Eight years
later it celebrated its first
important milestone: after 3,358 performances
CATS became the longest
running musical in the
history of British theatre.
CATS played its final performance on its 21st birthday, May 11, 2002. CATS
opened on Broadway
October 7, 1982 at the
Winter Garden Theatre in
New York City. In October
of 1991 CATS became
the longest continuously
touring show in American
theatre history. Five continents, 26 countries, over
eight and a half million
audience members and
27 years later, CATS is
still America’s most loved
family musical.

Maria Rivas
August 7
Heidi’s Jazz Club
Cocoa Beach
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Maria Rivas gradually
built her voice skills as a
hobby, absorbing the influences of contemporary
Venezuelan and Latin musicians. She only began
singing in local night clubs
and bars since 1983, but
soon moved to Aruba
where, for 2½ years, she
performed in a nightly jazz
show named Sentimental Journey Through Jazz,
where she astonished audiences with her mastery
of Jazz variations. She returned to Caracas and began performing in its most
important venues, she’s
one of Venezuela’s best
loved performing artists.
Her well-tuned voice, her
command of English and
Portuguese and her considerable personal charm
have built her a large crowd
of loyal fans. Also, she has
become a leading voice in
the region’s environmental movement, which has
earned her ample recognition. Her musical message
as a composer often has
ecological with sublim undertones.
Rivas has recorded
nine albums as a soloist,
and also has performed
live in Colombia, Brazil,
Austria, Holland, Italy,
Switzerland, France, Portugal, Panama, Puerto
Rico, and the Dominican
Republic.

Florida bass queen Baby
Anne has proved she can
hold her own behind the
decks in an industry dominated by men. Smoking
beats on her first set of
Technics 1200’s earned
her a place in the world of
electronic music. Her signature recipe is a delicious
fusion of electro and Miami
bass seasoned with funky
breaks. Every successive
release is an explosive mix
that is as infectious as her
live energetic sets. DJ Baby
Anne’s style of breaks consistently shakes the dance
floor with an unmatched
crushing fury. Since 1992,
Baby Anne is the most
popular female breakbeat
DJ. Baby Anne has coined
an impressive set of ten
CD compilations, five of
which became topselling
albums.
***
Jen Lasher has made
quite a stride becoming
one of America’s most
beloved electronic artists. With her unique style
both in appearance and
live vocal performance/
DJ Sets she continuously
shows that she is a step
up on the competition.
A constant need for diversity and growth keeps
Jen busy working on new
projects in the studio. She
has worked with Dj Icey on
many singles and album
releases, put out a mixed
CD with Dj Baby Anne,
and recently worked with
grammy nominated Dave
Aude on a studio collab
2009.

30 - Brevard Live August 2010
n Saturday, August 21st, E.A.R.T.H.
Awareness in cooperation with many
of Dave’s friends, relatives and former band
mates will be presenting Big Dave Fiester’s
Blues-A-Que at The Beach Shack in Cocoa
Beach. From noon until midnite the event
will feature a renowned barbeque by Barrell
House Barbeque of Brevard along with four
bands, two hours of jamming, a bon fire on
the beach, 50/50 raffles, memorabilia, and
much more. The musical lineup for the day
consists of local blues musicians and some
of Dave Fiester’s closest friend.
They will be remembering and paying
tribute to Dave Fiester who passed away
2005. Dave Fiester was one of Brevard’s
most talented guitar player, mostly remembered as frontman of the Legendary Groove
Monsters. He dedicated his life to his beloved blues music, even when dance and
pop music ruled the business. He’s toured
and recorded with the Henry Paul Band for
for a while.
Sue Luley, president of E.A.R.T.H.
Awareness: “His name deserves to continue
on, as well as his music. This is a non-profit
event with the money going to E.A.R.T.H.
Awareness which Dave devoted himself
and his time to. Musical instruments will
be donated to Satellite High this year where
Dave attended 9th to 12th grade.”
The bands participating at the Dave
Fiester’s Blues-A-Que are Blox Electric,
the Queen Bees, Steve Thorpe Band, Bone
Dogs with special guest Austin Pettit. The
event will end with an invitational jam.
September 3-6: 25 Years NKF Surf Festival
F
Celebrate The Dedication
or 25 years Rich Salick has been organizing one of Brevard’s biggest beach festivals, the Annual NKF Pro-Am
Surfing Festival which grew into the world’s largest charity
surfing event. To date, this event has raised over four million dollar for patient programs provided by the NKF of
Florida.
Thousands of people attend the five-day-event which
features lots of live entertainment, surfing competition, a
banquet, and a silent auction. Hundreds of prizes are given
away including trips and surfboards from many manufacturers.
It all got started in 1973 when Rich was a professional
on the United States and World Surfing Teams. After surfing
all over the world, he was diagnosed with kidney disease
and told that he would never surf again. After a successful
kidney transplant donated by his twin-brother Phil and the
design of a protective pad, he began hitting the waves again
and competing.
Rich retired from professional surfing after 4 years but
was the #1 rated surfer on East Coast in the 24-35 age group
in 1980. Rich and twin brother Phil began small surfing
events to benefit those on dialysis; this progressed into a
major festival in 1986 with the encouragement of Dr. Craig
Tisher, who was an officer in the National Kidney Foundation. It was his influence that pushed the NKF Surf Festival
into national prominence.
Rich is currently employed by the National Kidney of
Florida, as the State Director of Community Relations. In
January of 2000 Rich was honored for his surfing career
and contributions to the sport with induction into the Surfing Hall of Fame as an East Coast Legend. Twin brother
Phil followed him in to the Surfing Hall of Fame in January
of 2004.
The main activities of the Pro-AM Surf Festival will
take place at the Cocoa Beach Pier. For a detailed schedule
go to www.nkfsurf.com.
There is also the Taste of Brevard & Silent Auction on
Sunday night at the Radisson at the Port from 6 to 11 pm.
Sample foods from some of Brevard’s finest restaurants will
be offered. For more information call 407-894-7325.
August 15th At Captain Katanna’s: 3rd Annual Sam Jam
S
ammy Gorman was a musical staple on the Space Coast. When he
passed on three years ago, his friends
did not want to forget him and have
been gathering every year at Captain
Katanna’s on US 1, North Melbourne,
for the “Sam Jam.” This year the Sam
Jam is happening on Sunday, August
15th, at 1 pm and ends at 9 pm.
Following musicians are playing
this benefit: Simone, Kickin’ Country, Everyday People, Stoney and the
Houserockers. There will also be a special remembrance for Don “Donny”
Fournier, who passed April 22nd, 2010
after a yearlong bout with cancer. Don
and Sam played together for 6 years on
Monday Night Jams and other bands.
Donny was a great influence on young
players who would come to the jams.
This event will remember these two
great musicians and humanitarians.
This year there will be a “Remember Me Wall”. It’s a temporary wall
built for posting pictures, articles, or
trinkets that reminds you and us of
your loved ones who have passed, but
are still remembered. This wall is NOT
just for musicians, but for anyone.
Organized is the event by Kenny
Michaels, Sammy’s and Don’s friend.
Funds raised will be donated in Samuel
D. Gorman’s name to the Brevard Music Aid, Inc. which aids musicians in
times of need.

Fresh From Bonnaroo
Wayne Coyne
of the Flaming Lips
A
By Matthew Bretz
t a very gray 49, Wayne Coyne is still hipper
than you or I will ever be. Coyne heads up the
infamous Flaming Lips, one of the most exciting
psychedelic rock bands on the scene. Since 1983
Wayne Coyne has been leading his troop around
the world touting an ever-growing, increasingly
bizarre stage show that would give Kiss a run for
their money. An international icon, Wayne Coyne,
some say, has changed the face of live concert going forever. No longer just a musical event, the
Flaming Lips experience is a giant living art installation that takes you through the dementedly playful mind of rock’s premier mad scientist.
Brevard Live Magazine caught up with Wayne last
month at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee and
we got to see first hand what the man is all about. Well, at
least 10 percent, maybe. The man is like a human iceberg
and you can never tell just what‘s lurking beneath.
The Lips begin every show with a mother ship hovering above the audience, a quick nod to the George Clinton. Wayne is lowered from the ship in his now infamous
“Space Ball.” It’s basically an inflated hamster ball with
Wayne inside. In his bubble he is able to run across the
crowd to the stage. This kicks it off and it only gets weirder and more amazing from there.
“We use a lot of stunts and most of the time they
don’t even work out the first couple of times. Quite often
the space bubble pops and just sags down around me. It
actually adds to the fun I think because we laugh about
it with the audience. You should never take yourself too
seriously, especially when you are a performer in a live
show. The possibility of so many things going wrong is
overwhelming. If you take it too seriously, you will go to
sleep crying every night.”
Coyne has always had a flare for the dramatic with
his shows. In the early years the band tried social experiments with the fans to produce living art. Once in 1997
they went out to the parking lot and gave tapes to 40 car
owners and told them to all start the tapes at the same
time. The product was a giant surround sound system.
“I’m always about the show. Lasers and aliens and
whatever else pops out of my head. If you want to just
listen to music buy the CD, but if you really want to experience it come to a show.”
32 - Brevard Live August 2010
For Wayne it’s always about the fans too. He knows that
stunts will only take you so far.
“The fans make the “magic” happen. The show is just
lights and stunts, not magic. It’s all about the fans. If they
don’t like something we’ll throw it out. If they like something we’ll keep doing it. I don’t care. They are the reason
we get to do things like this for a living.”
The Lips’ live shows are fun and silly and a time to just
let go and be in the moment. Wayne Coyne is very happy to
be able to provide that environment.
“The way I think people should approach our shows
is the same way I think they should approach life. If you
are too cool and resist that tug to have fun and let go, then
you’re going to miss out on all the greatest things in life.”
Tonight the Flaming Lips are performing some of their
own music and then jumping into a full version of Pink
Floyd’s “The Wall” album. At this point one has to wonder
where the idea came from to tackle such a heavy endeavor.
The Flaming Lips have achieved great success. Does that
put them on the same level of Floyd?
“Hell no, it doesn’t put us on the same level as Pink
Floyd. First off we aren’t going about it note for note. We
are performing the album from start to finish, but we took
some liberties. We have to do it Lips style. Will we screw up
some? Probably, but it’s live rock’n’roll, man. We are going
to do quite a bit of our own stuff to warm up, us and the fans,
and then jump in with both feet. We’ll see what happens.
This isn’t about success. This is about having fun and trying
something new. Success just means I can afford to buy laser
pointers for 30,000 people so they can join in the fun.”
In an economy when many artist are either cutting back
on their stage shows or canceling tours all together, Wayne
Coyne and the Flaming Lips continue to push bigger and
better theatrics. But it’s not for their own egos, nor is it to
increase their notoriety.
“At the end of the day I would rather the fans remember
our shows for the experience they shared with their friends
more than I would the actual show. Going to concerts isn’t
so much about the band as it is a time to have fun with your
friends. We are just the vehicle for that experience. So come
out and have fun with us, and if you don‘t like us go see
someone else, but let’s keep live music alive. Other wise one
day we‘ll wake up and it will be nothing but formulaic, over
produced crap on the radio. Oh wait it‘s already too late.”

Crane Creek Tiki Taproom &
Grill: Serving “Island Style”
W
hen you visit Historic Downtown Melbourne you expect
to find stores of all kinds, sweet treats and of course,
restaurants. Now you can add a Tiki Bar to the ever-growing
list of places to visit.
Locals might remember the location as the former College
Campus Cafe on Henley Street next to the Railroad Tracks. The
only reminder is the tail end of a VW bug built right into the
structure. The new owners, Jim and Lesley King, kept it and
incorporated it into the Island style atmosphere of the recently
opened Crane Creek Tiki Taproom and Grill. This is a tropical
oasis that serves ice cold drinks, hand made dishes and boasts a
terrific view of Crane Creek. It’s the kind of place you want to
hang out with friends and enjoy a refreshing pitcher of homemade sangria or throw back a few cold ones. They carry 12
beers on tap and over 25 bottle choices so you can try a different beer each day of the month!
Jim enjoys cooking and creating unique dishes and he
has come up with some real winners! I tried their fried cheese
skewers and they certainly were not your average frozen and
breaded preservative-filled appetizers. They were really ooey,
gooey and fried to crisp perfection. Crane Creek Tiki has its
own recipe using pepperjack cheese and a luscious tempura
coating. Dipped in the Thai Chili Sauce it’s a match made in
food heaven.
They have many other scrumptious dishes such as Chile
Grilled Shrimp Flatbread but the star of the show is their famed
Tikirito, a flour tortilla smothered in bubbling cheese sauce,
stuffed with your choice of filling and served with a side of
black beans & rice or chips & salsa. The succulent slow roasted
pork version is drenched in salsa verde and queso fresco.
The menu doesn’t stop there because they also have sandwiches of all kinds like the must-have Taos burger, salads including the Phoenix using cactus shoots and, of course, hard or
soft tangy tacos. The fillings include chicken, seasoned beef,
grilled mahi, tender pork or vegetarian and you can choose
between 3 different homemade sauces so even your favorite
dish offers variety. “The Red” is tomato based with a hint of
jalapeno, “The Green” is tomatillo based with lime and cilantro
accents and “The Good Stuff” is for the serious folks who can
take the heat! Of course, if you don’t like it hot, you can always
cool down with a fried ice cream.
Stop by during football season and grab a seat in front of
any of their 6 HD televisions. They are open all week for lunch,
dinner and late night.
Missing the good ol’ times? Come to the “College Campus
Reunion” August 28th from 8 to 11 pm with live music by Billy
Chapman.

Jazz Guitarist
Matthew Heister
By Joan Bixby
J
azz guitar stylists like Matthew Heister buoy the
hopes of the aging community of jazz lovers who
fear that the music they love is being drowned out by
rock and hip hop. Only 27-years-old, Heister takes
the stage nightly offering jazz standards, the unique
American music genre loved throughout the world,
to club patrons. During the day he teaches the music
he loves to the next generation of jazz musicians:
drummers, guitarists and bassists.
Jazz and blues have been part of Heister’s life since he
was in the womb. His parents, both professional musicians,
are well known in the area. His mom, Karen, plays jazz
drums; his dad, Jim, blues bass. Their son picked up a guitar almost before he learned the alphabet. By the time he
entered Bayside High School his parents were helping him
score gigs at some of the more popular night spots in town.
Parental guidance got Heister started, but continuously improving his playing helps assure that he will keep the bills
paid. His drive to excel adds joy to his life. “I can’t imagine
not trying to learn more,” he says. He took advantage of
the opportunity to study with talented locals like Billy Van
Riper, Tom Hueston and Paul Chapman. Now he drives to
Orlando to study with Larry Coryell and treks annually to
the northeast with his steady girlfriend, Stacie, to combine a
vacation in NYC with an opportunity to work with Jonathan
Kreisberg, acclaimed guitarist/composer.
But he’s also learned that sometimes a little luck can
substitute for hard work. “I was leaving Guitar Haven after
taking a lesson from Billy, he said, “when a man walking in
the opposite direction stopped me and asked him if I played
reggae. I said, ‘Yeah, all the time’ - which was a complete
lie. The guy hired me to fill in for his guitar player the next
day at downtown Melbourne’s Friday Fest. It went well and
to this day he still calls me for fill-ins. Pure luck!”
Heister has used his creativity to meet the challenge of
turning daily practice sessions into pleasurable jams. Since
he often works in trios with drummer Casey Dodd and either
Ron Teixiera or Kenny Clarke on the B-3 organ, Thursdays
have been set aside to jam with Teixiera at Ron’s studio.
He also jams regularly with Rich Gange (WFIT-DJ), Phil
Margy and Jack Powell at someone’s home. “I’m always
playing,” he says. “Around 10 o’clock when my gigs end, I
try to sit around and play some more with band members. If
that doesn’t work out, I might drive to Orlando to play with
some of my friends over there.”
For years he worked gigs as a solo artist, either alone,
or with someone else’s band. Now he seems to prefer the
trio format. In addition to forming trios with Clarke and
Teixiera, he fronts the Matt Heister Trio with Jon Warcholak
on upright bass and Casey Dodd on drums. “I really like the
interactivity of the band,” he says. “I like to mimic the other
band members.”
Catch Heister with Clarke and Dodd on Monday evenings at Island Spice Restaurant on Stack Boulevard in Palm
Bay. The jam session is open to any jazz player and attracts
many talented regulars. Contact him at: matthewheister@

Brio Italiano is
A Piece of Sicily
E
ver since Brio Italiano Restaurant and Bar
opened a few months ago their vision has
been crystal clear - to bring a taste of Sicily to
historic downtown Melbourne. Located right
next to Bizarro’s on Vernon Place, and sharing
the same owners, Brio Italiano has quickly become a favored dining destination. It’s a new
restaurant where they know their craft, are
consistent in their recipes and service, and everything is always freshly prepared.
A friend and I recently stopped in for a quick lunch.
The gorgeous restaurant flaunts the real white linen
and emanates a classy mediterranean atmosphere. We
looked over the lunch menu and found it to be reasonably priced and diverse. There were options like hot
and cold heros, paninis, fresh salads and pasta dishes.
I went traditional and ordered the chicken parmigiana and my companion opted for the chicken marsala.
Both were large portions cooked to Italian perfection
and served with flawless al dente pasta. The meals
were preceded by a side salad, warm bread and a luscious herbed olive oil for dipping.
Our waiter was polite, prompt and informative.
He let us know that the dinner menu was a bit different. They actually have over 50 entrees to choose
from during supper with items like like steak & veal.
And like true Italian restaurants, they serve lots of
seafood from tilapia to clams, mussels and, of course,
calamari! Order the Pescatore and you will savor a
variety from the sea steeping in Brio’s home-made
and authentic pomodoro red sauce.
It’s too bad we didn’t have room for dessert because our waiter described each decadent treat in
sweet detail. Instead, we just ordered boxes for our
large amount of left-overs - our dessert for later as I
like to call it.
Downtown Melbourne has come alive in the past
few years with original restaurants that are not part
of a chain. Eating in these establishments keeps our
local economy alive. Brio Italiano has already proved
to be a staple in the downtown canvas and certainly
has staying power. It’s centrally located, delicious,
and affordable. I plan on returning as soon as my leftovers are gone!

Modern Woman
What’s In Your Bag?
I
By Misti Blu Day
haven’t showered all day and I am fumbling my unpolished fingers through the newest glamour magazines. I go to school all day and work all night; therefore, lounging around while reading magazines is a
sparse luxury. I flip to the last page of the magazine and
I see the usual bag check with a $7,000 Christian Dior
purse that mysteriously holds an abundance of luxurious items with, maybe, an inexpensive lip gloss or mascara. How everything fits in this tiny clutch is beyond
me. Where are the tampons and the Tylenol? Where are
the crumbs and bobby pins and crumbled up receipts? I decided to put a realistic spin on this popular bag
piece and show what is in my bag. I’m a mother, a wife,
a student, and a hard working woman who is launching a
career and trying to balance life. In my purse, I carry food.
When I spend 5 hours at school and head straight to work,
I can rely on my bag to have some sort of granola bar or
snack. Plus, kids loves snacks. I always keep hand sanitizer in my purse. I couldn’t live without it! I have a spoon
and a fork in my purse. There have been several times that
we were out of plastic ware at school and I had to eat a
salad with a spoon or chopsticks. Never again. There is an empty coin purse next to a handful of
change in the bottom of my purse. Usually, I just throw
change in my purse and it never makes it to the coin purse.
Of course, I have mascara, chap stick, bobby pins, business cards, pens, a highlighter, crayons, migraine medicine, Tums, wrappers, and a Tootsie Roll that is probably
from the 80’s. I carry a bottle of vitamin B-complex. I get
really tired and this boosts my energy. It also increases
metabolism and helps your immune system. I usually have
perfume or lotion in my bag so that I always smell fantas-
tic. I love to read, though I don’t know how I fit in the time,
so I always carry a book in my purse. I love reading while
the kids run around the park and burn off energy. That is my
time to relax. My husband owns a music store and is in the band The
High Fevers, so, I end up with a few guitar picks in my
purse. You may also notice a movie ticket from Toy Story
that is encrusted with melted Junior Mints. I have a pair of
Cinderella’s shoes, a toy frog, two plastic toy rings, a police car, Sleeping Beauty’s dress, a tiny sea shell from my
daughter Astrid, and my iPhone with a cracked screen. There you have it. A real bag from a real person. Often
the contents in my bag change and I do clean it out and reorganize on occasion. My bag is practical for my lifestyle and
nothing makes you smile more when searching for a pen
to write a check and stumbling across your child’s Barbie
shoes that she asked you to hold for her.
So, what is in your bag?

Florida Art
Terry
Cronin
By Joan Bixby
Y
ou would think that a busy physician with a wife and three kids
ranging from 12 to 17 would have
more than enough on his plate to keep
him busy every day. But you would
be wrong if you are thinking about Dr.
Terry Cronin Jr.. Cronin is driven to
try to squeeze a little more time out
of every day in pursuit of his creative
dreams. He admits that the tactics are
taking a toll on his sleep.
42 - Brevard Live August 2010
One of his dreams was translated into action in 2004
when his first horror comic book, Students of the Unusual,
hit the stands. His pursuit of other dreams such as producing TV shows and making Hollywood movies continues to
occupy much of the extra time he manages to wring out of
his day.
It is not surprising to learn that his passion for storytelling was ignited when he was just a youngster, about to
enter Hoover Jr. High School. He and a few friends videoed horror movies, gave them titles like Afternoon of the
Dead, and Psycho in the Box, and held neighborhood movie nights to show off their efforts. But the fun projects were
put aside when Cronin entered Melbourne High School.
He needed to maintain good grades for college because another of his dreams was to become a doctor and join his
father’s dermatology practice in Melbourne.
After being admitted to Wake Forest with a pre-med
major he signed up for a couple of electives in theatre and
film-making, but was able to dedicated little time to them.
After graduation he moved to the University of Miami for
his residency. He was too busy to get very involved, but
since he was still filled with the desire to explore moviemaking, he joined the Alliance Film Co-op in Miami. It
didn’t occur to him at the time, but the friends he made in
the Miami co-op were going to come in handy one day.
Once he was out of school and established in his
practice, he could no longer subdue his creative instincts.
Three of his friends: Pat Martin, Bob Lizek, and Jeff Hall
were enlisted to work with him on a low budget horror
film he made up after reading a newspaper story about the
murder of a homeless man under the Melbourne Causeway Bridge. The trio, who called themselves 3 Boys Productions, formed the nucleus of the numerous people who
would be called upon to contribute to Cronin’s projects.
One of these people, Michael Barrone the owner of
GraphX Printing in Fellsmere, was instrumental in helping Cronin produce his comic book series. The men met at
a charitable event, a film festival which Cronin and friends
from the Alliance Film Co-op started over ten years ago.
Barrone offered to print and donate the festival’s program
as his contribution to the beneficiaries of the event. When
Cronin saw Barrone’s capability he asked if he had ever
printed comic books. Barrone replied, “I have always
wanted to produce one.” That was exactly what Cronin
wanted to hear.
The men teamed up to make Cronin’s dream of making a comic book series come true. The first edition of
Students of the Unusual incorporated a scary story about
the homeless people who lived under the Melbourne
Causeway Bridge and the way they were preyed upon by
the trolls who lived there. Another comic book told the
story of the dragon sculpture which once graced the southern tip of Merritt Island in a way that might give you bad
dreams.
3 Boys Productions currently has a promotional DVD
making the rounds advertising a new reality show, Adventure Chefs. The idea behind the TV series is a competition
between two professional chefs vying for the title of “Adventure Chef.”
Contestants are required to hunt, fish, forage, collect,
and cook a 3-course meal that will be judged by three
discriminating diners. Danger awaits the chefs as they
hunt for the food that will be incorporated into the meals
they prepare because they are left in remote areas like the
Florida outback to accomplish their task.

My Ex Is
A Porn Star
By Matthew Bretz
M
y ex is a porn star. There just aren’t an abundance
of people that can say that, but it looks like I’m now
in that club. It’s interesting, frightening and worrisome
watching someone you care about take that path. But in
the end it’s not my journey, the story really belongs to
her. I’m not privy to a lot of the details anyway, but I do
have a perspective and a column so I’m going to tell you
about what I know and feel on the subject. Some of it you
might find surprising, other stuff not so much. Either way,
there are no judgments here. Emotions and opinions, not
judgments.
Normally when I tell you a story about someone in
my life I change their names. This time I have to be extra
careful because the girl I’m writing about goes by a couple
different names now and I don’t want to give her identity
away. So for this article we’ll just call her “Girl.”
Girl and I met in an unremarkable way with no more
fairytale appeal than most, except for the fact that we had
wild, immediate chemistry. Often times when two people
meet and start the dating process there is mild attraction
and an air of “getting along,” but every now and again
lightning strikes. Sometimes it strikes and fades, sometimes the storm goes on for years, sometimes the bolt is
enough to do you in. Either way these are sacred moments
in life and never wise to ignore. And so it was with us.
Very little in common, very different backgrounds, very
different life styles - but it was hot. In the end, there was
THE end. Most flings don’t work out, that’s life, at least
mine. But we remained good friends and I still felt protective of her. She was younger than me and I felt like she
wasn’t really prepared for the harshness of what was out
there. It could have just been my ego, but I felt her naiveté
and worried about her well-being.
When we met she had been trying to break into modeling. Like any pretty, tall girl in the business she was
working with a lot of different photographers building her
portfolio. She even appeared in the pages of this magazine from time to time. Every time she went for a shoot
I was concerned about the motives of the photographers.
She told me stories of the creeps out there just trying to
talk young girl into nude pictures. They claim it as “art”
and tell the girls they can further their careers. Five minutes on the internet will show you the difference between
what these guys are after and “art.” Girl always swore she

wouldn’t do nude. She wanted a classier run in the business.
Shortly after we stop dating she
moved in with a girlfriend in Cocoa
Beach. At that point she hadn’t worked
in a while, but oddly she always had
money. After some prompting she revealed that she had been cocktailing at
a strip club, but not dancing. After a bit
more prompting she told me she was
also working as a dominatrix. Shocked,
I told her I knew I couldn’t be too upset because we weren’t together but I
was very worried that she was headed
down a different road than she originally planned on. Jokingly I told her the
next step might be porn. “No,” she said.
That was out of the question.
Not long after that Girl hooked up
with a new husband and wife photographer
team. She trusted them completely but I did not. Almost immediately they talked her into topless pictures. Soon after
they stopped taking pictures all-together and took on the roles
of co-agents. Very quickly they had her on the road touring
the country with other models going to daily photo shoots.
The mom and pop façade had hooked another and they were
off to make money. The work was legit and profitable, I have
to admit. She was suddenly modeling for large companies
making large paychecks, but increasingly the work was leaning towards the adult erotic side of the business. In a matter
of weeks she had gone from never doing nude to full nudity
and erotic modeling.
One night I got a call from Girl. She had just come from
Miami where she had been offered a lot of money to film a
girl-on-girl scene for an internet site. She took the money
and filmed three all girl scenes. I was once again shocked
and worried. I asked her if she was considering crossing to
boy-girl scenes. She told me it had been offered to her, but
she was turning it down. She relayed her experiences with
the industry and the people involved. She talked of drugs and
prostitution on a regular basis. She said the girls she knew
stayed on a steady diet of pills and had no problems doing
“privates” meaning paid sexual encounters. Their status in
the industry made the rates almost impossible to turn down,
and there were plenty of clients.
“Never,” she said. “Never” to boy girl scenes and “never” to private sessions.
A week later I googled her stage name and instantly
found a scene with her and a man. A week and a half later I
found another one.
Personally I don’t have anything against pornography.
What people want to do with their own bodies is up to them
and I’m no one to judge. But I didn’t want it for her. And

maybe that’s my biggest problem with it. It’s not what “I”
wanted. But it really doesn’t matter what I want.
She’s tried to explain how fake all of it really is. How
it’s all acting. But I know there are some things you just
can’t fake. She even offered to hook me up with work if I
wanted. I thought about it for a half a second. I like to have
sex and the money is tempting, but I just don’t want the
stigma. I want to be known for other attributes I suppose.
She can’t take back what is on film now. She will never be
a runway model. She will never work for Victoria’s Secret.
There are avenues in modeling that could have given her
opportunities she will never be able to take advantage of
now. It doesn’t really matter what I say. She has a group of
people around her telling her in constant unison how great it
is for her to be in the business. Of course it is, they all make
money off of her.
We’ve often talked about why it didn’t work out between us, but that’s all moot now. Regardless of my take on
the industry I could never be in a relationship with someone
who’s intimacy isn’t special just for me. Others can handle
it I’m sure. I cannot. So I will now try to be as good a friend
as I can be to my porn star ex-girlfriend. I will continue to
worry and she will continue to lie to me about what she’s
doing. It’s her prerogative to do so. And it’s really not my
business anymore.
The last time I saw Girl she had a new car with all the
extras. She had brand new 400 dollars eye glasses. She was
showing off her expensive new camera. Whether or not
she’s proud of her work I don’t know, but she is definitely
proud of her new financial status. And if she is happy in any
measure than I can’t help but be happy for her. As I said at
the beginning of this piece: it’s not my journey. This story
really belongs to her. I was just a spectator along the ride.
