“A Fresh Start on the River Walk”
by Paula X. Stallcup, Director of Downtown Operations
The River Walk is the crown jewel of San Antonio, and we
take pride in keeping it clean for visitors like you. In January
of every year, the River is drained to complete minor
repairs on the river walls and clear the debris that collects
throughout the year. The annual event is celebrated with a
Mud Festival and the discovery of “souvenirs” left behind by
many San Antonio tourists and visitors. The most common
items found are cell phones, cameras, parade chairs and
restaurant silverware.
January is also the time of New Year’s resolutions and
the River draining signals a fresh start for downtown. After
we clean up the River, we start to work on implementing
innovative ideas which will help us achieve our goals for
the year. Last year, we began implementation of the longawaited capital improvements plan for the historic bend, and
we will continue to improve our assets in 2010. As you stroll
the River Walk, you may notice construction at various sites.
These necessary repairs will improve the safety and
beauty of our aging, beloved attraction. We are also
2
upgrading electrical, lighting and landscaping, plus adding
some aesthetic improvements with a modern flair.
We hope you enjoy your stay in our beautiful city, and will
return soon to see the fruits of our labor. In March, downtown
lights up for Luminaria: Arts Night In San Antonio, a nighttime
arts extravaganza! In April, we host Fiesta, a 2-week
festival of food, fun and parades. And anytime of year is a
great time to explore our many facilities that offer food,
shopping and entertainment, including La Villita, Market
Square, theaters, galleries, HemisFair Park, as well as our
other downtown parks and plazas. Many are free and open
to the public all year long. While visiting the new Museum
Reach extension, stop by the Pearl Brewery complex with its
eclectic mix of residents including retailers, restaurants and
the Culinary Institute of America.
Our downtown delivers year-round activity, and we hope
to see you again! Happy New Year!!

The beginning of a New Year means
New Year resolutions and new royalty on
the San Antonio River Walk.
Every year in January, the Department
of Downtown Operations drains the
River to perform annual inspections and
maintenance. Keeping our River Walk
beautiful and safe for everyone is the top
priority for the Paseo Del Rio Association.
This year the crews will also remove several
feet of silt that has built up on the side
walls of the River on the south portion
of the horseshoe bend – an ambitious task,
but very necessary for the health of
the River.
San Antonio celebrates the draining of
the River with the Michelob Ultra Mud
Festival. Civic and Media personalities vie
for the title of the Michelob Ultra Mud
Queen and Mud King by competing to
see who can raise the most quarter votes for
the Paseo Del Rio Association. A Mud Pie
Ball, Mud Arts and Crafts Show, and Mud
Parade all occur during the 4 day event,
because even Mud is fun in San Antonio!
All fun aside, the funds raised by the
royal candidates are an important part of
the Paseo Del Rio Association’s annual
budget, and are used to help pay for the
many free events the Association hosts each
year along our spectacular River Walk. The
Paseo receives no government funding, and

Mud’s In,
Water’s Out
The 2010 Mud Festival
by: Marcie Hernandez
“Take me out to the River Walk…
Take me out to the Mud!”
2009 Mud King and Queen Charlie and Sue Roberts
As the Department of Downtown Operations
prepares for the annual draining of the San
Antonio River Walk, the Paseo del Rio Association
prepares for the wackiest and messiest festival of
the year; the 2010 Michelob Ultra Mud Festival.
Taking place January 14th through the 17th, the
Michelob Ultra Mud Festival makes the best of a
muddy situation! Beginning in 1987 and
originally titled, “The First Annual Almost Maybe
If We’re Lucky Mud Festival,” the Mud Festival
has grown to be one of the largest fundraisers for
the Paseo del Rio Association. During the
Festival, civic and media personalities vie for the
title of Mud King and Queen. Candidates
campaign to see who can raise the most quarter
votes for the Paseo del Rio Association. The male
and female candidates who raise the most quarter
votes are crowned Mud King and Mud Queen and
represent the San Antonio River Walk as goodwill
ambassadors all year long. The funds raised help
support the over 16 free events that the Paseo del
Rio produces on the River Walk each year.
“The idea behind Michelob Ultra is the young
active lifestyle,” explains Robert Cevallos, Director
of Target Markets for Silver Eagle Distributors.
“Being associated with a fun and energetic event
like the Mud Festival and an icon of the city like the
River Walk is the perfect partnership,” he says.
Cevallos explains that Michelob Ultra, and all of
the brands of Silver Eagle Distributors, strive to be
more than the beer served at the party, but to be a
part of the true fabric of the celebration.
Current Mud Queen, Sue Roberts, knows a
thing or two about celebrations as a two-time Mud
Queen. “When I came to San Antonio 5 years
ago, I set my sites on becoming Mud Queen,”
explains Sue. “I would have never imagined that I
would be fortunate enough to rein for two years. It
is enabled me to meet so many great people and
8
makes me feel truly part of this great community.”
Sue served at Mud Queen in 2008 and 2009.
As the San Antonio market rep for all PR and
marketing events for MattressFIRM, she handles all
community, charity and marketing events for
the San Antonio market. Sue has become very
active in community and charitable efforts in San
Antonio. For the past four years, she has served as
a member of the Greater Chamber’s “Chamber
Champions” which coordinates ribbon cutting/
grand openings with new businesses. For fun, Sue
and her husband, Mud King Charlie Roberts, are
members of the local Jimmy Buffet Parrot Head
club. “These wonderful events are a lot more fun
when you can spend them with your spouse.
Charlie didn’t enjoy wearing the cape as much as
I did,” she jokes. “Being only the second
husband/wife king & queen was really great and
I highly recommend couples to go for it,” says Sue.
Mud King Charlie Roberts is President of
SWOT Consulting Services with clients in San
Antonio that include MattressFIRM. He also serves
as a business counselor for S.C.O.R.E., an arm of
the SBA for upstarts and small businesses facing
challenges in the market place. He is Chairman of
the South Area Business Council for the Greater
Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Auction
Committee for the San Antonio Sports Foundation.
“Most every event is a family event and it was even
more fun when some of the kids or grand kids
could attend with us,” says Charlie. “I am very
proud of Sue and it was an honor to be her “king”
for a year—not many husbands get to say that!”
Charlie’s advice for the candidates running for King
this year is, “You have to get your family, friends
and business associates involved right a way! Bring
everyone you can for the final fundraiser/silent auction. There are lots of negotiations that go on in the
final hours and it’s a blast. You need to have lots of
www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
January 2010
support so you can raise lots of
money and claim victory!”
New this year, the Department of Downtown Operations
will be performing a “desilting” of the River Walk in an
effort to improve the water
clarity and quality along the
Downtown San Antonio River
Walk area. The project will
remove between 1 and 11/2
feet of sediment in the River Loop
and Extension portions of the River
Walk. The Sediment will be removed by Storm Water
Operations during the 8 day draining of the River Walk from
January 3rd thru the 12th. An estimated 2,500 cubic yards
of sediment will be removed.
Events throughout the four day Michelob Mud Festival
include a Mud Pie Ball on Thursday, January 14th during which
Candidates have one last chance to raise money toward their
campaign. Held at Rio Rio Cantina from 5:30pm to 10:00pm,
Candidates and friends participate in a raffle and silent
auction, with food, fun and plenty of Michelob! All monies are
due at 10:00pm the evening of the Mud Pie Ball, and votes are
then tallied to determine the winners. The announcement of the
winners is held on Friday, January 15th at 5pm at the David
Strauss Bridge in front of The Original Mexican Restaurant
during the Mud Coronation. Here, candidates and passers-by
January 2010
The Centro Amigos participate in the 2009 Mud Parade
participate in the Singing of the Mud Anthem and the
ceremonial “re-filling” of the River. Once announced, the newly
crowned Mud King and Mud Queen take their victory lap
aboard a barge around the San Antonio River Walk. On
Sunday, January 17th the entire community is invited to
participate in the only Walking parade on the River Walk, the
Mud Parade! Starting at 2pm at Dick’s Last Resort, parade
participants march around the River Walk in their goofiest,
muddiest costumes, behind the 2010 Mud King & Mud Queen.
Following the parade, Dick’s Last Resort will host an after-party
with fun, Mud & Michelob!
So if you think you have what it takes to have a muddy
good time, come on down to the San Antonio River Walk
during the 2010 Michelob Ultra Mud Festival.

Hello! I’m Paseo the Parrot. The Official Mascot of
the Paseo del Rio Association and the San Antonio River
Walk. My job is to act as Goodwill Ambassador for
the River Walk and to educate tourists and locals alike
about the River Walk’s history and the mission of the
Paseo del Rio!
Founded in 1968, The Paseo del Rio Association is
a non-profit organization dedicated to promote, protect
and preserve the San Antonio River Walk, the number
one tourist attraction in Texas. The Association
accomplishes this through the production of special
events along the River Walk throughout the year,
the publication of Rio Magazine, and the hosting of
www.TheSanAntonioRiverwalk.com. My friends at The
Paseo del Rio serve as advocates, facilitators, and
moderators among the business, civic, and governmental
communities on matters concerning the River Walk.
Thanks to our Members, a collaboration of over 100
hotels, restaurants, retailers, and suppliers, we are able
to produce over a dozen free festivals and events on
the River Walk each year! Once a month, our members
come together to share their thoughts on issues of
concern and carry their collective message directly to
representatives of City departments, vendors, and fellow
operators along the River Walk.
I always love a helping hand! The general community is
invited to be involved with the River Walk through
a volunteer support group. The volunteers support
the activities on the River Walk by contributing volunteer
hours to the planning and production of our special events.
For more information on how you can become a
friend of the River Walk, call 210-227-4262 or visit
www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com. I hope to see YOU on
the Rio real soon!
