CHILDREN’S SUMMER
ART PROGRAM
The Children’s Summer Art Program (CSAP) is funded in part by the Oklahoma
Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and Allied Arts.
Children attend daily, Monday - Friday, for either one or two weeks. Sessions are
offered by age group, with two classes in each group. Children will attend both
classes for their age group in the selected class session. A 15 minute supervised
recess will take place in the park between classes. Tuition includes all materials.
During the last half hour of the final class in each session, parents are invited to
view a mini exhibit of work produced during the program.

FIREHOUSE ART CENTER CHILDREN’S ART EDUCATION
The Children’s Summer Art Program is designed to educate and inspire children
to be expressive by providing an environment where creativity is fostered and
embraced. FAC classes help children build both basic and advanced thinking skills
and promote diverse methods of thinking and learning. The FAC’s “Creating with
the Masters” curriculum introduces children to the works of master and modern
artists and teaches them about the history of art, museums, and art techniques
while meeting the Oklahoma Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines.

Each summer, the FAC Gallery features the work of students who participated
in that year’s Children’s Summer Art Program. One piece of artwork from each
student that took a class during the summer will be selected to be exhibited in the
exhibition. The art show is an exciting experience for the students, allowing them
the opportunity to showcase the effort they put into their art through a professional
gallery setting. The exhibition also highlights the FAC faculty’s dedication to
excellence and providing quality art education.

AN APPLE A DAY
Students will look at apples in a whole new light as they
draw and paint variations of this fruit. During this applecentric class, students will also use apples to print on
small bags and learn about artist Karel Appel.

ABSTRACTED
In this class, students will discover different processes
artists have used to create abstract art - not all abstract
art is the same. They will discuss what makes an artwork
abstract, and how the idea of abstract art has evolved
throughout history.

CHIHULY CUP CHANDELIER
Students will embellish plastic cups and bottles to create
their individual and unique chandeliers inspired by artist
Dale Chihuly. Clear plastic combined with the colorful
designs added by the students will recreate the beautiful
glass craftsmanship found in Chihuly’s own work.

NEAT STREET
This class will be a colorful, fun-filled look at
contemporary street art created by artists such as
Bansky and Basquiat. Students will draw, paint, and
make a mock-spray can pencil holder stenciled with the
work of the artists studied.

COLLAGES BIG AND SMALL
Students will rip, cut, crinkle, and fold paper to create
dynamic and festive collages of all sizes. During this
process, students will discover how common materials
can be used to make extraordinary images. At the end of
the session, students will be encouraged to connect their
art to create collaborative installation pieces.

CHINESE BRUSHWORK PAINTING:
WATER CRITTERS
Explore watery worlds and the creatures that live in
them! Students will learn to paint fish, turtles, frogs, and
sea creatures such as crabs and shrimp using ink and
watercolor on rice paper.

PASTA & POST-IMPRESSIONISM
Students will explore the artwork of post-impressionist
painters, applying their techniques to ceramic work using
pasta. A variety of uncooked pasta will be used as a
stamp tool for the students to create beautiful patterns
and scenes on their hand built ceramic work, inspired by
master artists.

BIOPHILIA
Biophilia means “love of life.” The biophilia hypothesis
proposes that there is an instinctive bond between
human beings and other living systems. In this course,
junior eco-warriors will use artistic inspiration to highlight
environmental concerns.

PICASSO POTS
Pablo Picasso’s portraits will inspire students’ own selfportraits created on hand built pots in an abstracted style.
Students will use basic and abstract shapes to build
unique portrait pots, imaginatively expressing themselves
through their artwork.

AFRICAN ADVENTURES
Take a rhinoceros on a texture safari, explore far away
places through paint, create a tribal bag, and dance
Masai-style in an awesome lion mask! In this class,
students will explore African culture through projects
inspired by traditional and contemporary art.

LIFE IN THE COUNTRY
In this class, farm animals and birds will be studied
through Chinese brushwork painting techniques. Using
ink and watercolor on rice paper, students will learn to
paint a variety of animals in natural settings.

PERSPECTIVE
Using a variety of mediums, students will explore artistic
elements and principles that will shift their perspective
on perspective! Students will create three-dimensional
images on two-dimensional surfaces using the
techniques of contemporary and Renaissance artists.

Discover self-expression through reusable materials and
painting! Students will combine their collage work with
expressive painting techniques used by master artists.

Alphabet soup, burger art, and fridge-magnet desserts
are all on the menu for this delectable class. Students will
create pop-art inspired pieces using bright and exciting
colors.

MONSTER MASH
Students will be inspired by animal artwork from master
artists and combine features from three animals to create
their own monster mash through clay. The students will
learn valuable ceramic skills while exploring imaginative

Can’t get away on vacation this week? Come island
hopping with Hokusai, see Haiti through Gauguin’s eyes,
and paddle up Dr. Seuss’s colorful waves in a Peter Doigstyle canoe. Students will discover imaginative lands by
creating artwork inspired by master artists.

TESSELLATIONS
Nature will inspire students as they discover the natural
geometric shapes that occur in snowflakes, rocks, and
metal to create their own works of art. This class will link
artistic principles to mathematics, science, and historical
applications of complex geometric forms.

COLLAGING ANIMALS
Using animals as subjects, student will create their own
two-dimensional collages using drawing and painting
materials as well as magazine cut-outs. Shape, texture,
and color will all inform the animal-inspired masterpieces.

Imaginations will soar as students incorporate their own
creative touches into master artist-inspired artwork.
Students will make their own imaginative mobiles,
drawings, paintings, and relief sculptures.

COOL CLAY CREATIONS
Hand building and glazing techniques will bring clay
into play for these young artists as they create tiles and
sculptural forms with unique designs. Students will
use pinch techniques, slab work and coiling, and basic
glazing techniques to develop cool clay creations.

HOW SURREAL
Students will learn about different artists who used
surrealist techniques - and get to try out the techniques
for themselves! Students will experiment with paint,
collage, drawing materials, and even some collaborative

An art class as vibrant as Paris itself! Students will create
drawings, paintings, collages, and a colorful cafe diorama
inspired by Paris and the master artists it influenced.

TACTILE POTS: BEYOND THE PINCH
From the internal support structures it takes to create
fantastical shapes, to the many textures that can be
imprinted on clay, ceramics remains one of the most
versatile and dynamic art mediums. Students will learn
how to turn sketched designs into three-dimensional
ceramics using a variety of techniques.

Tigers and dragons are considered symbols of strength
and good fortune. Students will discover the cultural
history of these creatures while learning to paint using ink

class will travel the spectrum of creativity and feature
mixed-media projects.

Students will refine their ability to accurately portray
any subject by exaggerating particular key features
that distinguish different animals. Students will learn to
control their ability to render figures and objects, either by

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
While learning about the elements of art, students will
create canine-centric works of art using paint, pattern,
color, and print. Students will look at the work of
traditional and contemporary master artists as they create
their own masterpieces.

Students will study the human form through clay. Using
hand building techniques, such as coils and pinching,

Through sequential art, new stories told by the students
will be envisioned on paper, creating unique comics.
Students will study the techniques of contemporary
graphic novelists and discover the history of story telling

This class is an exploration of clay and the hand building
techniques of pinch, coils, and slabs. The student will
be introduced to throwing on the pottery wheel with an
opportunity to try the wheel for themselves. We will study
the ceramics work of Mary Rodgers, David Regan, and Lana
Wilson. No prior experience is necessary. New students must pick up materials list
and purchase tools to bring to the first class (approximately $13).

This class will primarily focus on drawing using experimental methods. We will
explore how graphite can be used in various ways, on various surfaces, as well as
a few other monochromatic mediums. We will do a different project almost every
class, with the primary goal being to incite creativity and exploration. Many of our
projects are inspired by surrealist techniques. This class is for any level of artistic
experience – everything is an experiment!

DRAWING FROM OBSERVATION

Drawing is about the relationship between your head, hand, and eyes, and in this
class we will seek to deepen that relationship. We will discuss the fundamentals
of drawing in charcoal and graphite, starting with still-life drawing and moving
towards drawing the nude human figure. We will cover concepts such as
perspective, shading, and composition, with each student’s individual goals and
needs in mind. Each class will begin with group instruction and demonstrations
and then progress to individual instruction as we draw. No experience is
necessary; class is open to beginning and intermediate students.

Students will learn acrylic landscape painting techniques, which focus on building
depth in a painting. They will learn to build a foundation, working from dark to light,
as well as how to utilize “dry brush” blending techniques and “washes” or “glazes”
to continue to build depth. This class is designed for the beginner or painter that
wishes to focus on enhancing their technical skill. All students will work from an
image provided by the instructor, progressing together. Students may bring in
outside work for additional critique from the instructor.

style. Beginners get step-by-step instruction and advanced students have studio

enrolled.)

For the serious high school student preparing their portfolio for college
applications, this is an intensive figure drawing class dedicated to improving your
skills as well as creating work to be included in your college portfolio. Students will
work from live nude models in long poses and quick studies. Students will learn
composition, proportion, structure, form, and visual anatomy.

CHINESE BRUSHWORK PAINTING: CONTEMPORARY INK TECHNIQUES
FOR FLOWERS, DRAGONS, TURTLES, ETC. (6 weeks)

Using a contemporary technique of spreading ink or color with drops of water,
students will learn to create lily pads, flowers, or trees on rice paper. They will also
enjoy making turtles, dragons, or people walking in the rain with umbrellas with
this same method. Stimulate your imagination while exploring creativity with ink.

In this class, beginning students will be introduced to both hand building and wheel
throwing techniques. Hand building techniques include making coils, slabs, and
pinch pots. Students will be taught how to wedge, center, and throw small amounts
of clay. Students are encouraged to participate in the complete firing process.
Experienced students will expand their existing skills and be introduced to
techniques for altering various ceramic shapes, lids, handles, and spouts. Students
will be introduced to surface decoration procedures and introductory glazing skills.
INFORMATION FOR BEGINNERS:
New students must pick up a materials list and purchase tools to bring to the first
class. A pre-packaged beginning ceramics kit can be found at Hobby Lobby or
Michael’s (approx. $13). New students should also bring a bucket and old towel.

Techniques, and who are becoming fairly proficient in the basics of sawing, soldering,

JEWELRY MAKING TECHNIQUES

Students will learn techniques in jewelry making and metalsmithing to create
jewelry made by hand, from raw metal to a finished work of art. Lessons involve
basic fabricating techniques: sawing, filing, soldering, stone setting, surface
embellishments, and polishing. Students will be introduced to basic forming
techniques using silversmithing hammers. For all levels, all supplies and some silver
are provided. Stones and gold are not provided; gemstones may be available for
purchase.

SCULPTURE
SCULPTURE FROM OBSERVATION

In this class we will cover the fundamentals of sculpting in clay from observation.
We will learn composition, measurement, and modeling, with each student’s
individual goals and needs in mind. Each class will begin with group instruction
and demonstrations, with individual instruction provided as the student works
toward a finished piece. Past projects have included portraits, figures, and animals.

KILN FORMED GLASS & DICHROIC JEWELRY

Students will learn the properties of glass and how to create beautiful plates,
bowls, and jewelry. We will explore Dichroic Glass fusing and specialized kiln
formed techniques. Additional glass may be purchased at the Firehouse. All tools
are provided; the $35 materials fee collected with tuition covers only the first
project.

The Healing Studio is a supportive environment intended to improve the quality
of life of its participants by providing a risk-free social environment in which to
experiment with the creative process through self-expression. The Healing Studio
operates as an open studio; instruction and activities are individualized and nonstressful. Students may select one medium or experiment with many. Weekly
demonstrations with some materials provided.

The Firehouse Art Center will be providing movie-themed art activities throughout
the summer at the City of Norman’s Movies in the Park events.
COMMUNITY PARTNER: The City of Norman
In April, the Firehouse provided free art activities to
over 900 children and their families at the Medieval
Fair in Norman.
THE SAMO DUCKY PROJECT
The Samo Ducky Project began in 2010 as a Firehouse Art Center initiative to
develop an icon that would appeal to all ages and become a symbol of local arts
by promoting and increasing the visibility of public art in the Norman community.
In 2011, the Public Arts Board (PAB) began searching for ideas to enhance our
Norman Parks. The PAB liked the concept of the Cow Parade in Chicago and
other similar projects, but wanted to create something unique, produced locally
and that incorporated its mission, to create exciting, appealing, and harmonious
public spaces through the integration of art into public places.
The PAB accepted a proposal to use the Firehouse Art Center’s original duck,
“Samo Ducky,” designed and donated by Douglas Shaw Elder. The PAB hired
3-D Extreme in Norman to cast fiberglass reproductions of the original duck and
published a “Request for Proposals” to Norman artists to submit their visions of
the duck sculptures to paint and enhance.

THE SAMO DUCKY PROJECT
The goal of the duck project is to create a sculpture that is inviting, stimulating and
that fosters social interaction while enhancing our community parks. In addition
to Samo Ducky, residing next to the Firehouse in Lions Park, there are 18 ducky
installations currently located in Norman:
ART EDUCATION INITIATIVE
The Art Education in Schools Initiative is the Firehouse Art Center’s effort to bring
art education opportunities and experiences to students K-5 in the Norman Public
School system. Along with Firehouse support, these programs could not exist
without grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and Allied
Arts, and with generous individual donations. If you would like to support the Art

All in-school art education projects and programs introduce visual art education
that connects the students’ current curriculum with the Oklahoma Standards for
Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines. Projects are designed to allow children to see
their subject from a different viewpoint, to expand the ways in which they absorb
information, and to express their understanding of their education in a vibrant way.
Research has shown that children who can express themselves artistically will
dramatically improve their skills of observation and retention along with their overall
performance.
2015 - 2016 SCHOOL YEAR:
Bringing Figurative Language Murals to Additional Schools
Since 2014, The Firehouse Art Center worked with all 1,503 students at Kennedy
Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Wilson Elementary, and Jackson Elementary to
create large murals illustrating examples of figurative language including: simile,
metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and clichés. This spring, the
Firehouse continued this innovative project at Monroe, Adams, and Washington
Elementary Schools. The Figurative Language Murals project is designed to use
visual arts education as an alternative form of learning to help students attain
higher retention and understanding of a challenging language curriculum, while
completing a unified goal to achieve school beautification.

THE SUMMER 2016 CLASS SEMESTER BEGINS: June 12, 2016
General Summer Enrollment: May 9 - June 4
Member Enrollment (Patron + above level memberships):

Early Enrollment Discount ($10): May 9 - May 21
Late Enrollment ($15 fee): All enrollments after June 4
R E G I S T R AT I O N & P O L I C I E S
Class registration may be completed in person with payment by check, cash or
credit card or by phone with a credit card. Returned checks will incur a $25 fee.
Early registration is encouraged; please register by May 21 to receive $10
off the class tuition fee. All enrollments after June 4 will incur a $15 late fee.
Class Schedule Policies
• Class sizes are limited and enrollment is on a first-paid basis; please register
early. Completion of the enrollment form and full payment is necessary to finalize
enrollment. Please be aware that incomplete information on forms may delay
processing and enrollment.
• The FAC reserves the right to cancel a class when there is insufficient enrollment
5 – 7 days prior to the start of the class semester. Registrants will be notified and
will receive a full refund.
• The FAC office staff reserves the right to alter the class schedule during a class
semester. Students will be notified of any changes in advance.
• In the event of inclement weather, the FAC will be closed, corresponding to the
cancellation of University of Oklahoma Norman Campus classes. For up-to-date
class cancellations, please visit our Facebook page or website.
Enrollment Policies
• Payment is due at the time of enrollment; the FAC cannot hold a space unless
full payment is made.
• All class registrations are processed in the order in which they are received.
Phone registrations will be documented and ordered by the time in which they
are received. Registrations are finalized when payment is complete.
• Wait lists are available after classes are full and are kept in the order in which
enrollments are received. Students will be contacted if space in the class
becomes available.
• Students aged 14-17 must have written permission from parents and the
Executive Director to enroll in teen or adult classes.
• Unless notified otherwise, enrollment indicates that students and/or parents
of students grant permission for use of any visual record of students or their
artwork for educational or publicity purposes.
Classroom Policies
• The FAC reserves the right to substitute instructors at any time during a
semester.
• Outside of tours/open house events, individuals who are not enrolled are not
allowed in FAC classrooms except by written permission of the Executive
Director. Parents may not join children in the classroom during instruction time, in
order to create an atmosphere conducive to creativity.
• The FAC discourages students from bringing food and drink into the facility.
Students are expected to clean up after themselves.
• The FAC reserves the right to refuse enrollment or dismiss any student for
behavior that is disruptive or unacceptable to the learning environment.
In compliance with FAC Bylaws (Code of Conduct 9.6), behavior deemed
detrimental to the learning environment may result in suspension from attending
FAC programs/classes.
• Instructors will only arrive 20 minutes prior to the start of class to set up the
classroom and stay 20 minutes after the end of class to clean up the classroom.
Students may only arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of class to allow time for
the instructor to set up for the class. Students may stay no more than 10 minutes
after class ends to finish cleaning up their materials. Students may only be in the
classroom when the instructor is present.
• Parents/guardians must arrange for their children to be picked up within ten
minutes of the class ending time. If outstanding circumstances prevent prompt
pick-up, parents/guardians must call the FAC before the end of the class to
inform staff of a reasonable pick-up time of the student.
• Only the parent or legal guardian is authorized to pick up his/her child unless
otherwise stated on the enrollment form. Please call the FAC if individuals need
to be added to the approved pick-up list.

Class Cancellation and Transfer Policies
• Cancellation requests must be emailed to [email protected] with
“Enrollment Cancellation” in the subject line. Please allow one month from the
date of request for refund to be processed.
• Cancellation requests received at least one week prior to the start of the class
semester will be refunded in full less a $20 (adult) or $15 (children) administrative
fee per class. Materials fees are non-refundable.
• Cancellations received less than one week prior to the start of the class
semester are not eligible for a refund.
• Classes will not be prorated, because FAC instructors are contracted on a per
class basis.
• No class or tuition transfers will apply or be offered, should a student cancel less
than a week before the start of the class semester.
• Refunds and makeup classes will not be provided due to student illness,
planned or unplanned travel, or reasons not the responsibility of the faculty or the
FAC.

As a non-profit organization, the FAC must keep costs low, therefore we cannot
make exceptions to our policies.
Scholarships
A limited number of need-based, partial scholarships are available for children
and adults. Parents and students must complete an application to be considered.
Classes must have the minimum enrollment before a scholarship can be awarded.
The application deadline for scholarships is 10 days prior to the start of the class
semester.

Gift Certificates

History
Since 1971, the Norman Firehouse Art Center, Inc., a non-profit organization, has
served Norman and surrounding communities with award winning visual arts
education for children and adults, and gallery exhibitions of the highest quality. Our
faculty provide instruction in ceramics, sculpture, painting and drawing, jewelry
construction, stone carving, fused and slumped glass and more, in well-equipped
classrooms.
