General Description
The primary purpose of a safety valve in case of an unwanted
increase of pressure within a boiler, piping system or pressure
vessel is to discharge the excess mass flow in a safe and stable
manner. The exact design and functional characteristics of the
safety valve must be matched to the individual application.
Main steam safety valves (MSSV), also known as steam generator valves (SGSV), protect the secondary steam circuit against
overpressure in pressurized water reactors (both heavy and
light water).
In these applications, the safety valve must not only open
quickly and precisely at the set pressure, but they must also
remain completely tight until the set pressure is reached. The
discharge capacity is certified by discharge coefficients.
The function of the safety valves is proven by type test approvals (e.g. NB Capacity Certification, BKZ) and manufacturing
tests (e.g. ASME Section III applications) on Bopp & Reuther’s
own test benches or larger testing facilities in France, Germany
and the USA.
Applications
Safeguarding of piping and pressure vessels in primary and secondary circuits of nuclear power plants, e.g. protection against
overpressure of the main steam lines in pressurized water reactors. Other special requirements are for example:
European Pressurized Reactor (EPR)
Accumulation +3 % / blowdown -6 %
Chinese Pressurized Reactor (CPR)
Accumulation +1 % / blowdown -10 %
Features and Benefits
The proven design with ball centered Belleville spring washers
on MSSV allows for a compact layout of safety valves for high
operating pressures and high discharge flows. Due to the elimination of lateral forces a precise function e.g. 3 % accumulation and -5 % blowdown (as per ASME Section III) can be guaranteed without the need for blowdown rings or additional
(pneumatic) forces.
All valve types can be supplied or retrofitted with a pneumatic
piston to allow for forced opening (“Feed and Bleed”) below the
set pressure.
Safety valves with proportional opening characteristics are suitable for liquid applications to ensure a stable performance.
In addition, valves for liquids can be equipped with a vibration
damper for a stable function also in two-phase flow applications (flashing of saturated water).

General Description
Features and Benefits
The medium operated safety valve model SiH 3112 works
based on the loading principle. It is controlled by the pilot valve
model SiH 3115. The steam pressure acts in a closing direction
on the cylinder plug. To open the main valve, the pilot valve directs the medium to the chamber in the cylinder plug.
Suitable for saturated steam applications with short opening
times. Dampening in the end position ensures that pressure surges are avoided.
The function is redundant, with two or more spring loaded pilot
valves which can be operated with supplementary magnetic
closing force for increased tightness. Optionally the pilot valves
can be opened by magnetic force at pressures below operating
pressure.
As LP bypass valve DN 700x800 the valve can rapidly redirect
large steam flows away from the turbine in case of turbine trip
(stroke times approx. 400-500 ms).
Applications
As pressurizer safety valve in the primary coolant circuit of pressurized water reactors.
As Main Steam Safety Valve (MSSV) in boiling water reactors.
As LP bypass valve for protection of the low pressure turbine in
the event of turbine trip (PWR and BWR).

Gate Valve

Page 23
High Pressure Wedge Gate Valve
HKS
Page 24
General Description
Features and Benefits
Gate valves are generally used in the nuclear power plant industry to securely isolate water and steam lines. The main advantage over globe valves is the extremely low pressure drop across
the gate valves.
Special hard facing of the seat surfaces either with Cobalt (Stellite 21) or without (NIBORIT 40-P) ensures long service life and
excellent sealing properties over extended periods of operation.
Two main types are wedge gate and parallel slide gate valves.
On wedge gate valves the tapered configuration of the seat allows the generation of high additional sealing forces, thus ensuring increased safety during operation.
Additional advantage over parallel slide gate valves: the sealing
surfaces touch each other only in the final closed position. The
guides in the body prevent a permanent contact during opening and closing, resulting in a longer, trouble-free service life.
Applications
For low differential pressure (∆p) applications the wedges are
additionally spring loaded to ensure the gate is pushed onto the
sealing surface for better sealing properties. The required spring
force is individually calculated based on the case data, in particular the differential pressure (∆p).
Gate valves can be hand or electrically actuated (or both). Special requirements such as tightness and functionality even after
a malfunction of the actuator limit switches have been implemented in special designs, based on calculations and proven by
extensive testings.
22 Product Range
The bodies can be made of ferrite or from austenite materials
as is appropriate. The bodies of low and medium pressure gate
valves are made from dye forged shells that are welded together using the most modern arc welding technology and materials. The shell construction enables a perfect flow through the
valve while reducing the overall weight of the valve body.
In high pressure applications the housing is made of a single
block of forged steel without any welding seams ensuring excellent pressure resistant properties.

General description
Features and benefits
Swing check valves are used in the water and steam circuits in
nuclear power plants. When used in steam circuits, the swing
check valves are undamped to allow for a compact form and
easy maintenance. A damped version of the swing check valves
is used in water circuits to absorb pressure surges. This dampening is achieved by adding an additional piston or springs to
the valve mechanism thus preventing water hammering.
The inner shape of the valve body is designed to reduce the
flow resistance as much as possible. A key feature is the flexible
hinging of the swing flap, this guarantees an extremely reliable
and long lasting service.
The swing flap mounting can be dismantled inside the valve
body for easy maintenance, standard fittings are used. The
seating surface of the valve is hard faced. When used in boiling
water reactors, cobalt free material is required and NIBORIT
40-P is used for hard facing. The valve bonnet can either be self
sealing (Brettschneider) or a standard closure.
Applications
The valve bodies in Bopp & Reuther swing check valves are either machined from a solid forged block (high pressure applications) or are arc welded from two dye forged body shells (medium and low pressure applications).

Pneumatic control units are used to control the flow and direction of air to the various sections of the safety valve piston to
keep the valve shut tight before the set pressure is reached, and
when the set pressure is reached, the air is directed to assist in
opening the valve. To keep the valve closed, the additional
pneumatic forces on the closing piston increase the force of the
spring and achieve an excellent tightness. As soon as the set
pressure is reached, the “closing air” is bled off and air is directed under the lifting piston to assist the opening action. This
additional feature allows for excellent closing and opening properties unreachable with a pure spring loaded safety valve and
the operation of pressure vessel very close to the maximum
pressure makes the system much more efficient.
PC 50 and PC 53 control units are used with safety valves with
differential pistons. These systems hold pneumatic pressure on
both the closing and lifting side of the piston. The bigger diameter on the closing side of the piston ensures that the valve
remains closed. When the set pressure is reached the closing air
is bled off and the piston helps lift the valve open.
Combined with Bopp & Reuther’s mobile diagnostic system all
types of control units feature the possibility for on-site testing
of the safety valve set pressure at normal system pressure. The
piping system does not need to be pressurized up to the set
pressure.
To ensure complete system safety, the lines in the control units
are triple redundant. The pressure switches in each impulse line
and the associated lines all the way to the valve are “grouped”
for testing either during normal operation or during maintenance work.
Proof of the additional opening and closing forces is available
to ensure a high degree of safety and reliability of the entire
control unit.
The units are designed to function without any additional
power supply or external connections and have zero air consumption in normal operation (valves closed).
Both types can be used to control either one or two safety
valves, if two are connected then an option of only one valve
with closing air only (no lifting air) is available.
The PC 51 control unit is used with safety valves with standard
piston. The control air pressure keeps the valve closed until the
set pressure is reached. At set pressure, the air is bled off and air
pressure is directed under the piston to open the valve. This
principle also allows the “Feed and Bleed” function where the
valve can be forced to open long before the set pressure is
reached.

Applications
Features and options
PC 50/ PC 53:
Operation with safety valves with differential piston.
N1 version: single safety valves control
For use with permanent air pressure on both sides of the
piston during normal operation.
Option: T version for closing air pressure only, no lifting air
pressure.
Closing air is bled off when set pressure is reached.
PC 51:
Operation with safety valves with standard piston.
When the set pressure is reached, closing air is bled off,
lifting air is simultaneously directed under the piston.
Also used in "Feed and Bleed" applications.
