“All Saints Day”
Santa Lucia School News
Throughout the month of November, the students of
Santa Lucia School will be researching the lives of the
saints. This month long research starts with the celebration of the holy day of obligation-All Saints Day on
Nov. 1. The entire school started the day by attending
morning mass with Father Nick and Father Hily.
The children planned the mass and led the student
body through the readings and petitions of the day. Several students volunteered to dress as saints and give a
brief explanation of why they became saints.
For several weeks, the students will be encouraged
to look up the wonderful lives of the saints in the new
Learning Center by their teachers and Brenda Tracy, the
Technology Instructor. The lives of the saints can set
beautiful examples for students to follow and appreciate.

Greene School News
Nathanael Greene elementary school celebrated the
Day of the Dead. This celebration was initiated by parents of Greene students who joined with the administration and staff to create an "Ofrenda." An Ofrenda is
a Mexican Tradition which offers items to loved ones
who have passed. It is also a memorial, including photos and notes about those who have departed.
Olga Vasquez, organized a field trip for the parents
to the National Museum of Mexican Art. Here, the parents visited the Day of the Dead exhibit and took notes
and made sketches. The parents learned the history and
meaning of the various symbols employed in the Ofrenda. Next, Montserrat Hernandez, from the Museum,
visited Greene school and brought more resources to explore. Mr. Gomez, the Art teacher, demonstrated to the
parents how to make the various decorations. The
Ofrenda was designed and built solely by the parents.
Four elements are represented in the Ofrenda by different symbols: the sky is represented by the cut paper,
the earth by the flowers, water is represented by a bowl
of water and fire is represented by candles. In addition
to these items, skulls and favorite foods of the departed
are also placed as offerings.
All classrooms were invited to view the Ofrenda and
the parents acted as docents explaining the significance
of each decoration. Some parents dressed the part of
“Katrina”, an important character of the tradition.
This was a wonderful partnership of Greene school
parents, administrators, staff, students and the community joining together to offer a glimpse into Mexican
culture.
An invitation is extended to everyone in Canaryville especially seniors on Thanksgiving Day
Nov 28th, 2013.

MEMORARE
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that
never was it known that
anyone who fled to thy
protection, implored thy
help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O
Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come,
before thee I stand, sinful
and sorrowful. O Mother
of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and
answer me. Amen.
