TRIBUTE ~
JILL GRANT, July 1941 – July 2010
The pony world lost a true treasure on the 11th of July with
the passing of Jill Grant. She had a passion for breeding and
showing ponies and her many successes in the show ring
was a testament to her vast knowledge and amazing eye for
a quality horse or pony.
Jill’s love affair with horses started at birth as she came from
a long line of horsemen and women. At the age of 12 Jill
was awarded Junior Champion Girl Rider under 17 years
at Sydney Royal, an event she went on to win for the next
three years. Her most successful partnership was with a
Galloway mare called “Bambalina”. Together they won
Champion Galloway at Sydney Royal in 1962, 1963, 1965
and 1966. Over 6 years they won 23 blue ribbons at Sydney
Royal, a record which stands today.
She was involved in every facet of the pony world. Even as
late as January this year Jill was seen running her beloved
ponies out in the blistering heat at the 2010 Victorian All
Welsh Show. Her show success resulted in Bamborough
Pony Stud being awarded the Most Successful Exhibitor, an
award they have won numerous times.
She also got immense joy out of watching other people
enjoy the Bamborough ponies. She was always quick to
congratulate others on their success and was happy to
share her knowledge. Her broad smile, good humour and
generosity ensured that she had a huge impact on everyone
around her.
Jill truly was a wonderful lady and she will be greatly
missed.

BAMBOROUGH
PONY
STUD
“GLENORINE” COWRA NSW
The stud was founded in 1969 and produces Welsh Mountain, Welsh, Part-Welsh,
Australian, Riding Pony and Australian Saddle Ponies. The emphasis is on the
production of show quality ponies with movement and placid temperaments.
The stud began with the beautiful galloway mare, Bambalina, who was a
Thoroughbred/Welsh cross. Bambalina left a great legacy in the stud through her
three daughters, which were the foundation of the Riding Pony, Part-Welsh and
Saddle Pony sections. Many descendents of this great mare are successfully shown
in Bamborough’s current show teams.
The Australian section began with the mare Lochinch Comobella, by the great saddle
pony sire Croppa Dandy. She proved an invaluable broodmare with a legacy of
descendents still winning at Royal level today. Then came Barolin Charity, by
Barolin Feluka out of Barolin Carmen, who also produced some wonderful
ponies.
In 1993, the interest in Welsh ponies intensified during a visit to the UK. While
at the Royal Show, a colt foal was noticed on the winning mare Boston Bodecia,
and Boston Bittermint (imp) (by Vardell Right Royal) was purchased. Bittermint
has proven himself many times through his progeny, being the sire of extremely
successful ridden Ponies and Galloways. Perhaps his best daughter (and most wellknown) is Bamborough Mannequin, who has won all across the country up to
Royal level, including Runner-up Large Pony at the Grand National in 2004 and
2006, and EFA Large Pony of the Year in 2006, before retiring to stud in 2007.
It then became time to find another stallion to cross over the Bittermint daughters.
The colt Eyarth Tigra (imp) was found at the Eyarth Stud in Wales, and he arrived
in Australia in 2001. Tigra was by the Royal Welsh Champion Carwed Charmer
and out of the beautiful mare Eyarth Arabella. Tigra has already proven himself
as a sire of successful colts and fillies, producing the full brothers B. Paramount, B.
Academy and B. Oscar. Sadly Eyarth Tigra (imp) passed away in June 2010.
Jill and I have formed some successful partnerships over the years, notably the Firth
Family (Orange, NSW) and the Stevenson Family (Young, NSW). Di and Brooke
Firth showed some of the most successful ponies in the country - B. Mannequin, B.
Lady Luck, B. Sierra and B. Razzle Dazzle. Brooke, Christine and Alex Stevenson
have successfully shown B. Peep’n’Seek, B. September Song (out of B. Sierra), and
B. Country Charm. Their notable recent successes include: B. September Song –
Top 10 National Small Show Hunter Pony, 2010 SHC Grand National; Champion
Small Show Hunter Pony, 2010 Canberra Royal Show; Champion Small Hunter
Pony, 2009 Macquarie Bank Hack Championships – B. Country Charm – Supreme
Champion Part Welsh Exhibit and 5th Open Show Hunter Weight Galloway, 2010
Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Bamborough Pony Stud have also sold ponies who have gone on to have some
very successful careers with their new owners, including B. Paramount (shown by
Helen Dohan and the Jones-Ryan family), B. Bosun (McGone Family), B. Etchings
(Young and Harris Families, Qld), B. Pristine (Clothier and Edwards Families,
Qld.), B. Montague (Hocking Family, Murrumbateman, NSW), and B. Golly Gosh
(Stevenson Family, Young, NSW).
I would like to thank anyone who has had any involvement with Bamborough
ponies over the years, including riders, handlers, workers and beside-the-ringholders. Good luck as new owners of Bamborough ponies and I hope you really
enjoy them.

IMPERIAL STUD
Imperial Stud was established in 1967 with the purchase of 3 ponies from the
Loch-Sloy Stud in S.A. The stud has since that time been based on a number
of imported ponies. The main Mountain Pony stallions used were Kidwell
Pipson and Revel Pye, both sons of the great Clan Pip, Brierwood Fusilier,
Weston Hoopla, Hollybush Joker, Waxwing Herod and the last importation,
Revel Spinning Top. The Welsh stallions Welsh Chilo and Weston Chippendale
followed by Downland Warrior. Numerous mares have been added during
this time from the major studs in the UK. Bloodlines include Revel, Coed Coch,
Criban, Cui, Twyford, Brierwood, Weston and Downland.
The main influence on the Mountain ponies has been Waxwing Herod,
imported in 1984 after winning the Lloyd’s Bank Supreme Exhibit of Show
at Royal of England as a yearling. He has become one of the leading sires
in Australia, winning the sires ratings seven times and has winning progeny
in all states. The stud has several son’s, Maestro from Imperial Madonna
(Coed Coch Planed), Consul from Revel Casket, Cyrus from Revel Claribel,
Caruso from Coedyfoel Candy by Brierwood Fullback, and Lookout from
Nattai Ladylike by Coed Coch Bari. The young sire, Imperial Boston by Revel
Spinning Top (imp), is producing some outstanding stock.
The first Welsh stallions, Weston Chilo and Weston Chippendale, have left
the stud with many valuable broodmares. The pick being the Chippendale
daughter Imperial Julianna from Weston Jessica. She could be called a stud
just by herself never having a disappointing foal. Her two sons, Juggler and
Juene, and daughters are retained. These are by the imported Downland
Warrior (imp) who has proved a very good cross with the Weston mares.
Eyarth Tigra (imp) has been used on a number of the studs mares. He also
carries the blood of Weston Chilo. Imperial Justify and Imperial Matisse, both
sons of Eyarth Tigra (imp), are now being used in the stud.

AMARANDA PONY STUD
Amaranda Pony Stud was founded in 1957 with a small taffy pony mare
given to me by the manager of the ANZ Bank at Liverpool. She was believed
to be by the pony stallion Prince Comedy (205APSB). Being still a school boy,
I worked during my summer holidays for Mr. Max Kentwell of the famous
Baringa Pony Stud. He mated my taffy mare, Bottletop, to Lowlynn Silver
Chief. The result was Amaranda Esmeralda and that’s where it all began over
50 years ago.
Thirty five years ago I bought a Welsh Mountain colt from Lady Creswick of
the famous Nattai Pony Stud, Nattai Flarelight. He was cream and carried a
double cross of Milton Kitty, who was by cream of Eppynt (Imp), from where
his colour came. He carried 11 crosses of the renowned Greylight (Imp). This
was to be the first of my Welsh ponies.
I acquired the buckskin Section B Welsh mare Weston Cherie, by Weston Gigli
(Imp) out of the magnificent mare Weston Choice (Imp). What a start to the
stud she turned out to be, leaving over a dozen lovely fillies and having only
1 colt in her lifetime.
Following this I acquired 2 cream colts from the late Greg Higgins, Trentlyn
Monte Christo and Trentlyn Platinum. Both bought as foals and now stallions,
they have done a wonderful job for me.
The next two stallions to come to “Montcalm” were Imperial Jaguar and
Derralea Hamlet and they are doing an excellent job. Both stallions are
chestnut, something which I badly needed to put over my dilute mares.
I am very grateful for the wonderful job done by Mick and Kim Rath in the
preparation of my ponies for the show ring. I would not have had the success
that I have had without their continued assistance. We work as a great team.
I have 8 yearling fillies in the sale this year, mainly cream. Each one is to do
with the five stallions I have mentioned. Over the last 50 years I have made
some wonderful friends and have gained an enormous amount of pleasure
out of my ponies. I look forward to meeting with many of you at the forth
coming sale.
