community events | boys and girls clubs: born to be wild
The ever-popular Born to Be Wild auction was hosted at the spacious
Evergreen State College in Olympia. Attending the event were 582
of our community’s movers and shakers, wearing event-appropriate
biker attire.
The evening’s activities were emceed by the well-known Jerry Farmer. During the event, the “boys and girls” raised $501,000 for kids.
These funds will support after-school programs that focus on kids
and teens who need a safe and positive environment and role models
to grow up with.

FASTER HEALING AFTER

Recovering from spine surgery has gotten a little easier at Capital Medical Center.
Our new, state-of-the-art robotic guidance system is clinically validated to 1.5 mm

entering the operating room. This technology helps surgeons
make smaller incisions and need fewer X-rays, which can
result in shorter hospitalizations, less pain and a faster recovery.

ywca of olympia’s women of achievement
Each year the YWCA of Olympia pays tribute to women who
most closely model their lives according to the YWCA’s mission. In 2015 the 21st annual awards included a special category
dedicated to women striving to eliminate racism and promote
racial justice. Racial and gender justice activist Naomi Tutu was
the guest speaker at the Annual Women of Achievement Gala in
November at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts,
where the following honorees were revealed:

home advantage at twin star credit union
TwinStar Credit Union officially rolled out a new home buyer
program this February. Home Advantage is a member program
that walks home buyers through the home-buying process with
first-class service, says Racardo McLaughlin, head of mortgage
origination for TwinStar.
“It’s important that members know we have them in mind,”
says McLaughlin. “Our philosophy is that we want to build a
better and stronger member relationship, while saving the
member time and money.” vLEAH GROUT
For additional information:
Home Advantage helps buyers investigate the local market, twinstarcu.com
work with a real estate agent and purchase a home—saving money in the
process. By logging on, members have
access to online property listings, local demographics, and recent home
sales. This means you can search
through online MLS listings to find the
home you want that matches the options you need. When you save your
search criteria, you can receive email
alerts when new properties matching
your preferences become available.
Next, members have the opportunity
to find a preferred real estate agent
who has been prescreened and handpicked by TwinStar for service quality.
Members choose an agent from a network of experienced agents ready to
help with buying, selling or both.
One of the biggest advantages of using the Home Advantage service is the
ability to earn a rebate on the home
purchase (equal to 20% of the agent’s
commission, for an average savings of
$1,500 per transaction). The rebate is
then applied to the closing costs, giving the home buyer extra dollars for
other home expenses, such as furnishings or window treatments.

dolci si—point ruston’s new sweet spot
Something sweet is happening on Ruston Way. Anyone with a
love of Italian pastries, gelato and freshly baked focaccia bread
will want to check out one of Tacoma’s newest cafés: Dolce
Si, Italian for “sweet you.” The Sicilian bakery café opened
its doors in November 2015 at Point Ruston, directly below
the Copperline Apartments. With sweeping views of Commencement Bay, Dolce Si entices guests to stay and enjoy
the ambiance while sampling its incredible array of authentic
Italian fare.
With the South Sound’s first dedicated Sicilian bakery, owners
Steve and Elisabetta O’Shea strive to provide an authentic experience. Born and raised in Sicily, Elisabetta met Steve while
he was stationed in Italy during his time with the Navy. After
moving to Washington in 2003, Elisabetta set her sights on culinary school. She graduated from South Seattle Community
College in 2007 and began envisioning plans for Dolce Si.
something almost unheard of since corporate coffee giants
began to dominate the scene. Besides espresso, Dolce Si offers an assortment of both sweet and savory treats, wine and
more.
Interior design details, such as imported handmade ceramic
table tops and hand-painted tiles trimming the doorways,
were carefully selected to lend an old-world feel. The walls
are painted in a rich gold color and adorned with shelves displaying additional ceramic art for sale.
If you are looking to satisfy your sweet tooth or are simply
craving a real shot of espresso, stop by Dolce Si for an experience like none other. The bakery café also caters events such
as weddings, graduations and family functions. vANDREA

beachy tranquility and togetherness remodeled on puget sound
Sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful thing.
Michele Thornquist, development director at a Seattle-area
private school, and her husband, John, a business owner in
aeronautical engineering, fell in love with a Kitsap Peninsula
beach, put an offer on a midcentury modern home there and
hoped for the best. When that home proved to have many
unexpected issues, they rescinded their offer. This turned out
to be a blessing in disguise, since a better house two doors
away came up for sale a short time later.
After purchasing the property, the couple set about remodeling and transforming the beach house. Michele explains that
the glassed entryway originally had a solid wood door between it and the living room into which it opens. To better
connect the two spaces, the new homeowners replaced the
wood door with glass doors.
The master bedroom, Michele says, was painted teal green
when they bought the house, and there was barely any furniture in it. “‘Stark and dark’ really does describe how it used
to look.” Now the room is filled with light and clearly relates
to the water just outside.
Outdoors, a dining set provides ample seating for al fresco
meals. The homeowners say they didn’t finish the set because
they didn’t want the upkeep. Instead, they’re letting the wood Who lives here: Michele and John Thornquist, their two

FASHION UPDATE
SPRING TRENDS 2016
Spring trends have sprung, although
we’ve seen designers and retailers
touting their wares since shortly after the start of the year. The idea of
wearing a light cotton dress and flats
may be enticing to escape the winter
doldrums, but it borders on ridiculous
when the weather is still calling for
snow flurries. Fortunately, the worst of
winter is behind us, which means we
are free to start packing up the fleecelined leggings and down jackets to
make way for a lighter, brighter wardrobe. Let’s look at some of the trends
on the spring horizon.
White Shirt Redux
The white button-up is a classic and will never go
out of style, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be reworked every now and then. This spring, expect
to see new takes on this staple—such as Victorianera-inspired high collars and ruffles, and tucks and
asymmetrical necklines. Some of the options are
fun and fashion-forward, but not every version is
work-appropriate. Exercise caution if working this
update into your Monday-through-Friday wardrobe rotation.
Gingham Style
Nothing says warm weather quite like gingham,
except that this season, designers said “supersize” it! Bold gingham prints are back this year in
a big way. It is being incorporated with brighter
colors and even floral patterns for more contrast
and versatility.
’70s Throwback
The 1970s continue to be a source of inspiration,
with both denim and suede being the fabrics of
choice. Who doesn’t love denim? It has reigned
as a staple the past few springs, and 2016 looks
to be no exception. “Head to toe denim” is in the
forecast. Think lightweight and chic, not acid wash
(scary). Suede is a popular fabric for the new handbag trend—the half-moon bag.
Fancy Footwork
The love affair with mules continues this season and
for good reason. They are both comfortable and
versatile, remaining the shoe of choice for spring
and summer. vANDREA LERUM

After time in the spa, farm-to-table dining at the Copperleaf

he says.

seven steps this spring to prevent heart disease and stroke
Our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends are at risk.
Heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among
women each year—more than all cancers combined. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac
events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes, according to Priscilla Hoang, MD, a cardiologist with CHI
Franciscan Health.
Education can begin with a well-woman visit. This is the annual check-up, starting at age 20, to review a woman’s overall health, including the key elements of ideal cardiovascular
health. The well-woman visit is now free under most health
plans and Medicare, thanks to the new health care law, yet
less than half the population is aware that this exam and other
preventive services are now available with very little cost.
The well-woman visit is a chance to focus on yourself and
your overall health and wellness. There are three main goals
for your visit:
• Documenting your health habits and history, considering
first-degree relatives: mother, father, siblings.
• Getting a physical exam.
• Setting your health goals.

When asked about lifestyle changes, Hoang recommends to

Capital Medical Center is the first hospital in Washington to
offer robotic-guided spine surgery.
said Jim Geist, CEO. “Adding this state-of-the-art system to
our nationally recognized spine program goes hand-in-hand
with the $16.3 million expansion of our surgical department
that is happening this year.”
Medical experts agree that minimally invasive surgery has
been shown to mean smaller incisions, shorter hospitalizations, less pain and faster recovery for patients. But smaller
incisions usually pose a challenge to surgeons because of the
“Capital Medical Center is committed to bringing advanced lack of a direct line of vision, and can require many intraoptechnology and the best treatment options to our patients,” erative X-rays to compensate. Renaissance helps surgeons
overcome these challenges, says Geist. The system has been
clinically validated to ensure 1.5mm accuracy for increased
patient safety, which translates to the best possible clinical
results for patients, with less use of fluoroscopy.
Before entering the operating room, surgeons use Renaissance to preplan the optimal surgery in a CT-based, 3-D
simulation of a patient’s spine. During surgery, Renaissance
guides the surgeon’s hand and tools to the precise location.
In a recent multicenter study published in the medical journal
Spine, investigators stated that Mazor Robotics’ technology
“offers enhanced performance in spinal surgery when compared to freehand surgeries, by increasing placement accuracy and reducing neurologic risks.”
“Renaissance has been a tremendous addition to the spine surgery program at Capital Medical Center,” says Andrew Manista,
MD, orthopedic spine surgeon and chief of staff. The ability to
preplan a patient’s surgery and the precision of the system during the procedure, he says, are significant advantages for a wide
variety of clinical applications, from minimally invasive procedures to complex spinal deformity correction.

the South Sound and selected a few of our favorites. From Gig Harbor to Puyallup to Olympia, all offer something a little different, and each one is worth the sweat. vANDREA LERUM
