Dear friends,
We are in awe of the generosity and support for our foundations that was
demonstrated over the past year, and we are grateful for all those who made
contributions toward our mission of improving the health of our community.

Partnerships with our philanthropic supporters have paved the way to
enhancing programs and services for our patients. They help us provide
financial support for patients in need and implement innovative new
technologies and equipment that will ensure Novant Health continues
to deliver the highest level of remarkable care in our region.
2013 was a year of intentional growth and change, making our system,
staff and facilities better. The changes we continue to implement are done
with one goal in mind – to make healthcare more remarkable for our
patients and the communities we serve.
One change this past year was the unification of the foundation and community
engagement teams from all of the facilities throughout the Novant Health system.
By unifying Novant Health’s six foundations, we maintain the local relationships that
are critical to our culture of philanthropy while also achieving greater effectiveness and
efficiency. We are always asking ourselves how can we do more, reach further and make
more of an impact, and unifying our teams has proven to be the answer.
The work we do would not be possible without your support. Please accept our sincerest
thanks for all you have done over the past year for Novant Health Foundation at Forsyth
Medical Center, Kernersville Medical Center and Clemmons Medical Center. As we look

Dear friends of Novant Health Foundation Forsyth Medical Center,
What a privilege it is to be a part of Novant
Health Foundation Forsyth Medical Center
and see, firsthand, the power your gifts
have in our community. Over the last
year, you have enabled us to distribute
more than $3 million to improve

healthcare in our region. The passion that
you have for making our community a
healthier place to live is nothing short of remarkable.
Here are some of the things we have accomplished together:
• We invested $1.3 million to construct a new, expanded
hemodialysis unit to better serve our patients in a
comfortable and welcoming environment.
• We invested $1 million for an innovative transcatheter
lab and operating room that allows us to offer a
minimally invasive, life-extending valve replacement
option for patients who would not qualify for a traditional
open-heart procedure.
• We contributed $750,000 to support the Community
Care Center and Today’s Woman health clinic that
provide healthcare to the underserved in our community.
Our foundation has also welcomed a new executive
director, following the retirement of founding president
Dee Smith in 2012 and the retirement of vice president
Peggy Carter in 2013. Norman Jameson joined our team
in May of last year, bringing a fresh approach with a
perspective drawn from a career in public relations and
development, most recently at Wake Forest University.
Since the Foundation began in 1999, donors have
contributed millions of dollars to patient services and
capital needs, while building an endowment of $60 million
that will continue to support the great work that goes
on every day at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center,
Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center and Novant
Health Clemmons Medical Center.
Please accept our deepest appreciation for your dedication
and commitment to making our community a better place
to live.
With gratitude,
• We funded a nurse navigator to lead cancer patients
through their diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
• We purchased a covered golf cart to transport patients
between the hospital and the medical office building
at Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center.
• We raised $40,000 to upfit the women’s changing
rooms in radiation oncology at the Foundation’s
Women’s Council’s annual Garden Party.
• We supported research and patient care initiatives
through dozens of special funds.

Hope now has an address
Foundation funds build brand-new hemodialysis unit
Tracy Brinkley has been a patient at the Novant Health
Forsyth Medical Center dialysis unit for seven years, and
during that time she has seen remarkable progress. She
began her thrice weekly treatments in a small, crowded
room where patients were close enough to touch each
other and nurses had to twist to avoid bumping against
her. Thanks to Novant Health Foundation Forsyth Medical
Center, she now comes to a brightly lit, efficient unit
with a spacious floor plan and fully equipped state-ofthe-art nurses’ station. And for Tracy, who will receive
these treatments for life, this bright and roomy
environment means that her emotional quality of life
is being treated as well.
As a former nurse at Novant Health Thomasville Medical
Center, Tracy now understood the importance of quality
care from the patient’s perspective. She became the face of
the project when nurse manager Scottie Wilson approached
the Foundation to fund a new unit for our dialysis and
infusion treatment patients.
Tracy and Scottie were overwhelmed when the Foundation
committed $1.3 million to build a brand-new unit with
private bays, sunny yellow walls and large windows, as
well as a new outpatient unit for patients like Tracy to use.

treatments) were placed side-by-side with inpatient

dialysis patients, many of whom were really, really sick.
Tracy says now she and other patients will have more
freedom of motion to sit and talk with friends, watch
television or read – without feeling that they are disrupting
those sicker patients. It also means that all patients,
whether receiving inpatient or outpatient treatment,
have personalized care from nursing staff based on their
individual needs.
As a former nurse and current patient, Tracy Brinkley
lives with a foot in both worlds. Tracy spoke at the
hemodialysis unit’s opening dedication in June 2013,
just after receiving her 419th treatment in the old unit.
“The view looks different from the patient side of the
bed,” she said. Tracy and others continue to express their
gratitude. In Tracy’s words, “Hope now has an address.”

A gift from the heart
Estate gift enables operating room advancement

It’s often said that the
best gifts come from the
heart. A recent $1 million
estate gift commitment
from Bud and Zanne
Baker proved to be no
exception. This generous
gift allowed Novant
Health Foundation
Forsyth Medical Center
to fund an innovative
new operating room
to perform minimally
invasive heart valve
replacement surgery
on high-risk patients.
In the new transcatheter lab and operating room, surgeons
use the latest imaging equipment to replace the aortic
valve without opening the chest. This new room offers
much more than just the latest and greatest in surgical
technology, however; it offers the gift of life for patients
who are too frail for traditional open heart surgery.
“This innovative procedure represents the future of heart
care,” said David Duncan, MD, a heart surgeon with
Forsyth Medical Center. “This is the latest technology
has to offer and it will provide lasting impact for high-risk
patients by expanding their treatment options.”
Estate gifts are a significant and meaningful way to support
a medical center or community need while also allowing
donors to actively take part in the project and to see how
their dollars truly make a difference.
Thanks to the Bakers’ generosity, our patients will be able
to celebrate the gift of added time with their loved ones.

Giving in action
Special events help make miracles possible
Smash Cancer
A tennis benefit that supports the cancer nurse navigator
program by honoring its founder, Maurice Everette, Smash
Cancer celebrated a milestone in its ninth year, reaching
$200,000 raised. Everette, who died in 2012, believed
tennis could change the world. Driving Smash Cancer with
passionate dedication are his wife, Vickie, center, and
longtime friends Beth and Sandy Baldwin.
Cowgirls with a Cause
Friends and family of Roy Burgess started Cowgirls with
a Cause after Roy’s wife, Debbie, died from breast cancer.
The annual event draws competitors from across the
country and raises nearly $20,000 annually. Roy stands
before the top prize, use of a travel trailer, donated by
Trailers of the East Coast.
