Shirley Y. Susilo was born in 1979 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
In all of her work, she goes under the pen name S Y S.
Graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York City, S Y S has worked for various clients and
is eager to grow and bloom within the illustration field.
S Y S is best known for creating SANG SAYUR (suhng suh-yoor), a comic about the colorful daily life
of Bawang Putih (Garlic) and the other fruit and vegetable characters. Her work was the only
Indonesian entry that won the Bronze Prize of 2007 International Manga Award, established by thenJapanese Foreign Minister, Taro Aso. Among the winners were East Coast Rising by Becky Cloonan
(Tokyopop, USA), Gothic Sports by Anike Hage (Tokyopop, Germany) and Goong by Park So Hee
(Seoul Munhwasa, Korea).
SANG SAYUR appeared in a monthly comic magazine, Cherry (published by m&c!) and its comic’s
first volume was published in December 2012 by Gramedia, a major publisher’s house in Indonesia.
The comic was recently made available for download via mobile phones as a part of Gramedia’s
collaboration digital comic program with Japan.
In early 2014, her bilingual Indonesian English children’s story book illustration, MUFFLELOCCA, was
published. It was her debut as a children’s story book illustrator while collaborating with Indonesian
authors. At the end of August 2014, she completed a two tryptic-painting project for a corporate
client. Currently, she is undertaking a painting project and producing materials for the sequel of her
comic book, SANG SAYUR.
