2015 Visitors Guide
We Say,Welcome Back.
Experience the variety of old and new as they
blend together in this beautiful area of Middle
Tennessee, just minutes from Nashville. Discover
our history. Explore our country music heritage.
Hear our legends and stories. Soak in the
simplicity of our lake, parks and farms. After a few
adventures in our county, you'll feel like you are
returning home.
Play.
Mid-summer is high season for fun on the water.
During your adventure on Old Hickory Lake, don’t be
surprised if you see thundering offshore powerboats
racing for prizes in a poker run or wake boarders
showing off their skills at a competition.
Fish.
Old Hickory Lake
One of Tennessee’s best fishing spots, Old Hickory
Lake has produced state, national and world-record
catches. In fact, some of the world’s top
professional anglers have tested their skills here in
a variety of tournament events, including the
Women’s Bassmaster Tour, Bassmaster Elite Series,
WalMart FLW and BFL Series, American Bass Angler,
Triton Boat Owners, Professional Anglers Association
and Tennessee Bass Federation Nation. The lake
also draws thousands of recreational anglers who
come in search of large-and small-mouth bass,
crappie, catfish and rockfish, a striped freshwater
sea bass that can grow up to 45 pounds.
With more than 22,000 acres of water, no
horsepower limits and stunning landscapes, scenic
Old Hickory Lake offers something for everyone.
Boat.
Old Hickory Lake has enough big water to give gearheads their throttle fix and plenty of secluded coves
for those who prefer a more placid setting. Fullservice marinas offer everything boaters could
possibly need, including fuel, dockage, rack storage
and service.

Historic Sites
Sumner County paints a vivid picture of life in the
post-colonial, post-Revolutionary War and Civil War
periods. Sumner County is fortunate to have eight
historic homes and two fort sites which are open to
the public. Lovingly-preserved mansions hold littleseen treasures, including a rare oil painting of
George Washington and a set of Martha
Washington’s china.
Some historic sites feature guided tours where you
can hear about how life evolved from one of survival
on the frontier to a more comfortable life on the
plantation. You'll be able to stand in rooms where
Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston and other founding
fathers of our country had dinner, planned strategy
and danced the night away.
Does your family have a Sumner County connection?
Visit the Sumner County Archives to help you trace
your family's ancestry.

Trails & Tours
Tennessee Civil War Trail
As a gateway to the South, Tennessee
was vital to both the Union and
Confederacy. In Sumner County, the
railroad and river were important
transportation routes, and the Union
Army occupied the county seat of
Gallatin throughout the war. Daily life
quickly changed as the area was
drained of resources to support the
army, and morale sank as charges of treason ran
rampant between former neighbors. Learn more
about soldiers, civilians, and daily life at the many
sites in Sumner County that are now listed on the
Tennessee Civil War Trails.
Ring of Fire Trail
Venture off the beaten path on the
Ring of Fire Trail, part of the
Discover Tennessee Trails
program. A trail that is rich in
music and history, it winds
through portions of Sumner
County such as Hendersonville
where legends Johnny and June
Carter Cash, Roy Orbison, and Conway Twitty called
home. Travel through Gallatin's historic square on
the way down Highway 25 to Castalian Springs,
where Cragfont Mansion awaits your arrival.
Continue to the charming historic town of Red
Boiling Springs, and drive Highway 52 to an area full
of roadside markets with fresh produce. Make sure
to stop at 5 Chefs in Portland for lunch where the
strawberry cake is always fresh and sample some of
Tennessee's finest wine at Sumner Crest Winery.
Gallatin Ghost Walk
The Gallatin Ghost Walk is a family-friendly stroll
through the history and mystery of Gallatin and
Sumner County. Gallatin’s courthouse public square
has been called the Most Haunted Public Square in
America© and with good reason. In one building that
housed the former law office of Andrew Jackson in
the late 1700’s, there are 14 identifiable ghosts,
mostly Confederate and Union soldiers who were
treated for serious war wounds in what was then the
surgery and offices of a local doctor. And, the many
elegant and prosperous plantations and horse farms
in Sumner County had colorful and auspicious
occupants and lifestyles…they linger in a different
dimension in time. Join hosts Donna and Randy
Lucas as they weave the diverse and resplendent
history of Sumner County with spine tingling tales of
ghosts and the supernatural. Call 615-512-5299 for
reservations.
