SACRED HEART GIRLS` COLLEGE NEWSLETTER
SACRED HEART GIRLS’ COLLEGE NEWSLETTER 28 March, 2014 No. 265 A Prayer for Lent As we journey through Lent let us keep Christ at the heart of all our words and actions. Let us focus our lives more clearly on walking in the way of Christ and living the Christian life. This blessing prayer is prayed over those who are preparing for baptism at Easter. Receive the cross on your forehead. Learn to know Christ and follow him. Receive the sign of the cross on your ears, that you may hear the voice of the Lord. Receive the sign of the cross on your eyes, that you may see the glory of God. Receive the sign of the cross on your lips, that you may respond to the word of God. Receive the sign of the cross over your heart, that Christ may dwell there by faith. Receive the sign of the cross on your shoulders, that you may bear the gentle yoke of Christ. Receive the sign of the cross on your hands, that Christ may be known in the work which you do. Receive the sign of the cross on your feet, that you may walk in the way of Christ. TERM DATES 2014 TERM 1: Thursday, 30 January - Friday, 4 April TERM 3: Monday, 14 July – Friday, 19 September TERM 2: Tuesday, 22 April - Friday ,27 June TERM 4: Monday, 6 October - Friday, 5 December THE WEEK AHEAD Monday, 31 March School Athletics Day Thursday, 3 April Reconcilliation Yrs 10-12 Wednesday, 2 April Reconcilliation Yrs 10-12 SCSA Indoor Cricket Friday, 4 April Peer Support Yr 7 Lenten Liturgy End of Term 1 FROM THE PRINCIPAL In the last Newsletter I made reference to Catholic Religious Australia announcing the National Lament in response to the plight of those people seeking asylum in Australia. The National Lament continues until Pentecost Sunday. Details of the Lament can be found on the College website. On Palm Sunday, 13 April, the Walk for Justice for Refugees takes place at 2:00pm at the State Library. The Palm Sunday Committee is organising a large scale inclusive event for everyone in the community who wants to show their support for refugees and asylum seekers. The Committee put forward: We know that very many Australians want to see a new approach which is just, humane and compassionate. We already have a large number of groups supporting this event, and we know that many more will be coming on board. We expect that the event will attract people from all parts of the community, and many different types of groups, including faith groups, local communities, schools, and unions. The Refugees Advocacy Network, a coalition of community and faith based groups, which is organising the event has as its mission: We stand in solidarity with asylum seekers and refugees We believe that everyone has the right to a life that is free from persecution and life-threatening situations We seek to live in a society that is shaped by compassion and justice for all people including those seeking asylum in Australia We affirm the right of asylum seekers to live a dignified, meaningful and safe existence while their claims for protection are being processed We believe Australia can and should be more generous and provide resettlement and permanent protection to many more refugees and people seeking asylum Justice for refugees and people seeking asylum would mean welcoming refugees not sending asylum seekers offshore closing Australia‟s Detention Centres fair and speedy processing of asylum claims and family reunion no deportations to danger increasing the refugee quota Sacred Heart staff, students and families are invited to participate in the Walk for Justice for Refugees. Ms Sue Youens is co-ordinating the College‟s response to this concerning issue that troubles many within our community. At 1:00pm on Palm Sunday a Prayer Service in solidarity with Refugees and Asylum Seekers will take place at St Patrick‟s Cathedral. The celebrant of this prayer service is Bishop Vincent Long, who along with his family sought refuge in Australia. Pope Francis says, “Whoever turns refugees away forgets that Jesus was also one.” At this time in Australia‟s history the Sacred Heart Girls‟ College community is asked to be part of the public witness of the Church in Melbourne. Our challenge is to replace the globalisation of indifference identified by Pope Francis, with the spirit of solidarity and love. All are encouraged to participate in this prayer before the Walk for Justice outside the State Library. Even though these events take place in the middle weekend of the school holidays the College will have a presence at both the Prayer Service and the Walk for Justice. Please see more information attached to this Newsletter. Last week also saw the Year 7 and 8 Outdoor Education Camps take place. This was a great undertaking with two year levels out of the school at the one time. In all 27 teachers, three Learning Support Aides and three past students: Fiona Maudsley, Abbey Morris and Ella Carr, supported the Year 7 and 8 students throughout the course of the week. Thank you to Mr Cameron McGrath (Head of Outdoor Education) for his organisation of the Outdoor Education Program for our students. The girls experienced some powerful learning opportunities in the challenging activities they encountered over their time on camp. As well as a development of their physical and intellectual skills, they have learnt so much more about themselves as individuals within this program. Important life skills of independence, problem solving, resilience, goal setting, self-esteem, teamwork, leadership, perseverance, responsibility for self and others and respect and care for the natural environment are but a few of the key learnings in the Sacred Heart Outdoor Education Program. I congratulate the students for their willingness to be open to these new learnings, particularly about themselves and those around them, learnings that will contribute to their personal development. Thank you also to Ms Bronwyn Lane (Year 7 Co-ordinator) and Ms Shivanee Shan (Year 8 Co-ordinator) who were in the field with the students for the week. The refurbishment of the Romberg/Boyd building continues according to schedule. The following photos taken earlier in March indicate some wonderful spaces developing in the building. Once again it is anticipated that classes will begin in Semester 2. Captured below can be seen the central Drama space, the Hall Music space, Art rooms, the Foyer and music tutorial rooms. In the last week of term, I will be joining Sr Madeleine Barlow RNDM in the Philippines. The purpose of my trip to the Philippines is to explore further immersion opportunities for both staff and students. We will be working with Sister Kate O‟Neill RNDM investigating opportunities for ministry and service around Manila and its environs. The College is looking at the possibility of establishing a post VCE/Social Justice experience with the Sisters in and around Manila. This may even lead to the eventual establishment of a supervised immersion for Year 11 students in the near future. Sr Madeleine is currently in the Philippines and has attended the graduation of the senior girls at the Delesan Kailawan Center, Kulaman, Mindanao. This is the school conducted by the Sisters and supported by College fund raising. In my absence Mrs Tina Apostolopoulos will be Acting Principal. This week we welcome Mrs Lorraine Lobo as College Accountant and Miss Renee Johns moves into a full time position at the College. Mrs Fay Pattison will be taking the last week of term as long service leave and travelling to Vietnam to work with the RNDM Sisters. At the end of this term, we farewell the following teachers as they begin a period of long service leave: Mrs Lynne Evans and Dr Tim Nikolsky will be on leave for all of Term 2 and Mr Brian McCann will be on leave for the first four weeks of Term 2. We wish these teachers an enriching period of leave from the College. Congratulations to Mrs Anvi Mehta (Finance Office) and her husband, Chirag, on the birth of their son, a beautiful little brother for big sister Jui. As this is the last Newsletter for this term I wish all in our community every blessing for the term break ahead. We celebrate the great Feast of Easter over the last weekend of the break before we return to school on Easter Tuesday. May we take time to prayerfully engage in the Easter Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday. The College will conclude for the term on Friday 4 April with a Lenten/Holy Week Liturgy and the new term will begin on Tuesday 22 April with an Easter Liturgy. Happy Easter to all in the Sacred Heart community. Christopher Dalton Principal Christian love is loving without counting the cost. This is the lesson of the Good Samaritan: this is the lesson of Jesus. Pope Francis@Pontifex, 18 March 2014 FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – FAITH AND MISSION SHGC COMMUNITY OUTREACH 2014 SHGC-RNDM Cake Stall On Saturday, 22 March the culinary skills of our community were on display during the annual SHGCRNDM Cake Stall. A vast range of cakes, cookies and slices were donated, with funds raised to be forwarded to the RNDM Sisters in Bangladesh. St Euphrasie‟s Girls‟ Secondary School, which is located in Hashnabad, Bangladesh, will purchase much needed resources for their community. This fundraiser was an outstanding success, with over $2,700 raised. Students, parents, staff, former students and RNDM Sisters supported this fundraiser by baking, delivering the goods and serving customers. The girls were complimented on their presentation and their friendliness as they engaged with the wider community. The Cake Stall was a wonderful community outreach activity. The money raised will greatly assist the education of girls at St Euphrasie‟s Girls‟ Secondary School in Bangladesh. Thank-you to all who made this day a great success. Kate de Lacy Head of Religious Education HARMONY DAY On Friday, 21 March our Sacred Heart community gathered for the joint celebration of Harmony and Anti-Bullying Day. Sheryl George, our College Captain, together with Carmelle Velasco and Bhavana Vutukoor, our Faith and Social Justice Deputy Captains, displayed passion and energy in encouraging their fellow students to celebrate Harmony Day. Sheryl George told the gathering in the courtyard, “The theme for Harmony Day 2014 is Everyone Belongs. Sacred Heart is a richly multi-cultural community, with students from over 50 different cultural backgrounds. Today we will celebrate some of these cultural groups with our National Dress Fashion Parade. We also celebrate the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. As a community, and as members of Australian Society, we declare Bullying. No Way! We strengthen the existing messages that bullying and violence here at school, and within the broader community, are not okay at any time.” The Harmony Day Fashion Parade for 2014 saw students and staff dress in their national dress from countries such as China, Egypt, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, the Philippines, Scotland, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. A late recruit took to the stage wearing a Hawthorn AFL Guernsey, representing the sports loving people of Australia. Our Harmony Day celebrations concluded with a spirited rendition of We are Australian. Led by our talented senior musicians, Ylenia Golini, Edeva Miasis and Genevieve Ygoa, our Sacred Heart community joined in the chorus, we share a dream, and sing with one voice, I am, you are, we are Australian. WALK WITH MARY MASS 2014 On Sunday, 23 March the College Choir, under the direction of Ms Nancy Calo, provided the liturgical music for the annual Walk with Mary Mass at St Patrick‟s Cathedral. This is the twentieth year that the Sacred Heart Choir has sung at this ecumenical gathering in honour of Mary, the Mother of God. Bishop Elliott, the principal celebrant, thanked the choristers for their contribution to the liturgy. Following Mass the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham and much of the congregation processed through the streets of Melbourne from St Patrick‟s Cathedral to St Paul‟s Cathedral for Evensong. Michael Smith Deputy Principal – Faith and Mission FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDENT WELLBEING NATIONAL ACTION DAY AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE The Student Wellbeing Action Group recently hosted the National Action Day Against Bullying and Violence. The week leading up to the 21 March involved a great deal of activity in preparing materials and activities that focussed on raising awareness and work towards building a just and respectful community. On the day, students were invited to write positive messages, construct colourful bunting and paper doll chains, and test each other‟s knowledge with chatter boxes that provided facts about Australia and our multi-cultural identity. Students were also able to obtain “Bullying, no way!” wristbands and laminated information cards outlining strategies for dealing with a bullying situation. These events provide us with an important opportunity to raise awareness as well as foster community, however, as we all know, this should be something that we carry with us at all times, not just one day each year. I would ask all students to reflect on how our actions and words reflect on others and to ensure we always treat each other with respect. Thank you to all girls who worked hard towards making this a great day. IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MONASH COUNCIL Monash Council has informed the College that it will be trialling new technology to monitor parking around the school. The aim is to improve safety around schools and other areas where vehicle parking and safety are important. A vehicle with a dashboard mounted camera will patrol parking around the College and identify drivers breaching the road rules which cause a safety concern. The trial will occur both in the morning and the afternoon and will exist in combination with existing enforcement activities. As always, we ask that all parents/guardians who are dropping off or picking up their daughters park legally and safely. This includes avoiding double parking and parking across driveways. A reminder also that La Trobe Street has a 40km/hr limit and u-turns are not permitted. Thank you in anticipation of your observance of our road rules and for sharing in the responsibility for keeping our students, your daughters safe. TERM TWO: WINTER UNIFORM All students are reminded that when we return in Term Two, they should be in winter uniform. The holidays are a great time to check that the uniform is in good order and that hems are of an appropriate length. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all staff, students and parents/guardians a very Happy Easter. Whether you are travelling or remaining at home, I also wish you a safe and a restful term break and look forward to seeing you all in Term Two. Tina Apostolopoulos Deputy Principal – Student Wellbeing FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – LEARNING AND TEACHING PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEW REMINDER Parent Teacher Interviews will take place during the first week of Term 2 on Wednesday, 23 and Thursday, 24 April. Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese, primary and secondary, participated in this celebration. We were amazed at the number of students and educators in attendance as there were over 2000 students from more than 329 Catholic schools. Archbishop Denis Hart was the celebrant for the Mass. Pamela Politis and Caitlin Bibby were chosen to carry the SHGC banner during the opening procession. The theme for the Mass was „Entrust yourselves to God and dare to dream.‟ Following the Mass, we walked to the Catholic Leadership Centre in East Melbourne for the Young Speakers‟ Colloquium. The two speakers at the 2014 Colloquium, were Ms Brooke Parsons who currently works at the Royal Children‟s Hospital and who is an ambassador for the National Stroke Foundation and Mr Nick Maxwell from the Collingwood Football Club. Nick Maxwell supports a number of charities associated with animal welfare and children. The speakers inspired us as they reflected on the importance of resilience during times of adversity. The speakers also inspired us to consider the importance of reaching out to those in need. Sabrina Pye Year 9 Co-ordinator INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST On Tuesday 3 March, the Deputy House Captains joined the hussle and bussle of the morning city commuters to attend the annual International Women’s Leadership Breakfast at Parliament House. This highly anticipated annual event is designed to bring students from Years 10- 12 and teachers together to celebrate the importance of the day. We were inspired by the success of guest speaker Sally Strautins, Senior Accountant Director. Her speech outlined the importance of determination, persistence and resilience. The breakfast highlighted the importance of women in leadership and encouraged that we, women of the future, must strive to be influential leaders. Tiahne Frederic (11 Blue) and Elizabeth O’Gorman (11 Purple) MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEWS LUNCHTIME MUSIC CONCERT Our first lunchtime concert for the year on Tuesday, 18 March was a great success. Students immersed themselves in the world of Jewish festivals, beliefs and rituals and developed a greater understanding of the key people and events as noted in the Hebrew Scriptures. Students learnt about famous Australian Jews such as Sir John Monash and the contribution of the Jewish community in all aspects of Australian life. Visiting the historic and beautiful St Kilda Synagogue was a particular highlight. Our tour guides were very informative and responded to an endless array of questions with humour and great sensitivity. Each session concluded with a traditional ceremony called a Kabbalat Shabbat to indicate the commencement of the Sabbath. After laying the table and lighting the candles, the blessings were said and explained over the ceremonial bread and grape juice which were then served. Overall it was a fascinating excursion that brought to life the learning that had occurred in the Religious Education classroom. Kate de Lacy Head of Religious Education eLEADERS 2014 This year we continue with our initiative to elect a student body to act as leaders and support the use of technology throughout the College – eLeaders. The goals of the program are simple. The program will help to provide additional support for the use of technology within the learning and teaching program and aims to also develop leadership and ICT skills within our student body. On 13 March, all eLeaders attended an intense training day to help develop their skills, not only with technology, but also as recognised leaders of the College. The sessions for the day included: team building, working with the IWB‟s and the specialised software, developing leadership and personal skills in the role, iPad connecting and basic use, and a final session outlining expectations, guidelines and responsibilities for students in the role. We trialled a new format this year to help train our students who were new to the role as eLeader and to further develop those students who were eLeaders in 2013. It was a wonderful day full of spirit, good teamwork, and great learning. Congratulations to the students who have been appointed eLeaders for 2014. We look forward to their work, inspiration and guidance as we journey together through the technology labyrinth. After the day, many eLeaders posted up really positive messages about their experiences – here are some of them. “The eLeader training day was a great experience for me. I met a lot of people from different year levels and my knowledge of technology grew. I am really excited to start my leadership role as an eLeader this year” – eLeader: Noreen Sujith (8 Green) “Thank you for organising the amazing day I had yesterday, I have learnt new techniques that I know I will keep forever. I really understood what a true leader means and I am privileged that I am an eLeader for 2014. All the different sessions taught me new tactics that will help me in the future. One of my favorite activities was when we had to go around and find different people from different year levels and answer the questions, I think that game gave me courage to talk to people who I haven’t met. I learnt many skills, one of the skills I found interesting was when I could convert my writing into text on ActivInspire, I never knew you can do that. Keeping everything I have learnt in my mind, I hope to perform to the best of my abilities. “ – eLeader : Karena Karunakaran (9 Purple) “The experienced/advanced sessions that you held for a number of previous eLeaders I found to be really informative and intriguing. It was fun to learn new ways to use the interactive whiteboards and some of those skills I believe will be great assets in presentations. It was also excellent to have 'ice-breaking' activities such as the ones where we played paper tag and sat on the couches and talked. I believe it really helped us all, as eLeaders, get to know each other in ways that were diverse from previous years. This year's sessions were probably the funnest, most entertaining and rewarding training sessions. Thank you for a truly wonderful day. Thank you” – eLeader : Ylenia Golini (12 Gold). We celebrate the appointment of the following students as eLeaders for 2014. “As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others” – Bill Gates.
