Neighborhood Falmouth is part of a growing national movement to promote continuing community residence for older citizens. Their members, staff, and volunteers collaborate to help mature Falmouth citizens continue to enjoy our multigenerational community from the comfort of their own homes. There’s What In My Coffee? Produced by Alison Leschen Ed Dewitt, Executive Director of the Association for the Preservation of Cape Cod, talks about some of the causes of water quality issues on Cape Cod and what we as individuals can do about them. This program was part of the 300 Committee Winter and Spring Speaker Series. 10th Anniversary of the Community Preservation Act In Falmouth Produced by Kevin Lynch Recently the CPC and others commemorated the 10th Anniversary of the Community Preservation Act with a forum in the Hermann Room at the Falmouth Public Library. The program featured highlights and discussion of the successes of the CPC and Community Preservation in Falmouth. The speakers included Ralph Herbst, Eric Turkington, Peter Clark, and others. Economic Value of Cultural Tourism To Your Bottom Line Produced by Alison Leschen Part of the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce’s Business Education Series, this program is a panel discussion of how cultural heritage tourism can benefit Cape Cod businesses. Cultural heritage tourists are those who are looking for more than just fun and sun; they want experiences that are unique to their destination. Herring Tagging on the Coonamesset River Produced by Alison Leschen In this program, we learn about how herring are tagged on the Coonamessett River and what researchers hope to learn from this effort. Also discussed is how people can help support the program by “adopting” a herring. A SPOTLIGHT CHAT WITH SUSAN ZAVALA FCTV: How did you first hear about FCTV and what made you interested in becoming a member? I first heard of FCTV more than 10 years ago at a community meeting about FCTV funding and cable contract. (Jay was attending as Falmouth Rep to the Cape Cod Commission and I went along out of curiosity.) Pucky was in attendance and explained to the group the great benefits of FCTV. She described how FCTV taught her how to use the cameras, how to edit, how to create a set and everything that she needed to know to make a show. She spoke of the many shows she had created and that it was a great way to be involved in the community. It sounded really interesting. A few weeks later, Jay and I were watching Sunday football and I suggested we turn off the TV, go on a date to FCTV and learn how to make TV for fun. We took a tour, started classes the following week and were hooked. For us, volunteering at FCTV together has always been a “date.” FCTV: How long have you lived in the Falmouth area and where did you grow up? I am a Falmouth native, but my father was in the Air Force, so we moved around from the age of 2 to 11. Returned to Falmouth (Otis AFB), my mother’s home town, a year before Dad retired and completed grades 7 through high school in Falmouth. After High School, attended New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Boston and lived there until 1985 when I traveled south (Texas, Louisiana). Returned to Falmouth in 2000. FCTV: What life experiences have you had that connect you to your membership/projects at FCTV? As a volunteer at the Barnstable County Fair I came up with the idea to do a program about the fair. I filmed, interviewed, edited, directed and produced the 30 minute show. It was great fun. The fair had always been a favorite outing for my father and me. We especially enjoyed the horse pulling and it was very satisfying to film the pull and interview one of the owner/drivers of a pulling team. FCTV: What classes have you attended at FCTV, and how have they helped you in your projects? My first regular position on a crew was with Bob Hinrichs, who very generously and eagerly showed me the ropes. Working with Bob, I became proficient in operating the switcher, manning a camera, setting up the shoots, lighting and sound. Jay and I crewed for Bob at least every month for a couple of years. Then we became regular crew members on Kevin Lynch’s shows. Other than classes required for studio, field shoots and editing, more recently I’ve taken classes in Drupal and Google Drive. FCTV: List the projects you have done here (and the projects you have volunteered to help produce), including the most current. Right now, I occasionally crew with Kevin Lynch and I always man Camera 3 at the town meetings. I like camera 3, which shoots the stage and podiums, because I have to closely follow the discussion and anticipate who’ll be speaking next to get the shot. It’s a busy camera and time passes quickly. I like being a part of the town meeting process. Helping to bring the town meeting coverage to the Falmouth community allows me to feel connected to my town and to be civically involved. I’ve occasionally run cameras for field shoots: Arts Alive, the first and second JazzFest (so exciting to film live music), the Thought Leadership Forum for Chamber’s 100th anniversary, and a few others that I can’t remember right now! FCTV: What inspired you to take on the projects you have produced at FCTV? For a couple of years, Jay and I worked with Yang to judge TV productions submitted for awards. That was fascinating – we really enjoyed Yang’s company- and it also gave us a different perspective on creating TV shows. We got to see all the creative ways that people were engaging in local access TV. I traveled with the staff and other volunteers to Boston to picket the State House and attend a hearing about legislation that would affect local access TV. My first and only picket line – a very proud moment! Love that picket line photo. FCTV: In the future, what classes do you hope to take, if any? I will need to take classes in using the “new” control room, setting up a studio shoot with the “new” lights, and I’ve totally forgotten how to use the editing program! FCTV: What projects do you hope to do in the future? I hope to be involved in a show for the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce, about businesses in Falmouth; a project that Jay and I talked about for a long time, but never had the time to create. In a few years, when I’m no longer working at the Chamber, I’d like to crew more often and will think of creating another program, though I don’t have any idea what it will be about right now! FCTV: Has becoming a member of FCTV enhanced your life? If so, how? Being an FCTV member makes my life richer. From the projects that I’ve been a part of over the years, to the people that I’ve had the good fortune to meet at FCTV, life is sweeter as an FCTV volunteer.
