Why so? We'll because I'm writing this to you from
Moreton Island. It's early in the pre-dawn - I've always
been an early riser - the entire camp is still asleep.
Got to thinking what's the most productive thing I can do
right now?
Coffee! That's it! Fixed myself a coffee.
Then I thought - President's Letter for the month.
What a fantastic, fitting, appropriate location to do a bit
of writing for the LROC. The cool of the morning. It's still
pitch black but the eastern sky is just starting to lighten.
The only sounds are the insects of the night and the
hypnotic pounding of the surf on the beach right behind
me.
Isn't this what the club is all about.

So I got the LED light out on the camp table, pulled out
the iPad and started pounding the keyboard.
And it's times like these, and situations like this when it's
a good time to get to doing a bit of thinking.
It never ceases to amaze me the sense of camaraderie
and community that is the LROC. Staggered ferry arrival
times means that the club members couldn't arrive
together. No matter the text messages and phone calls
meant there was someone there to meet the new arrivals
as they came off the ferry. The discussion around the
camp was who is arriving next and when and who would
be there to meet them and travel with them up the
beach. I think it's called caring.
Some of the club arrived in the very early morning, still in
the dark of night. There were texts and messages to warn
of dangerous beach conditions. At the campsite the ever
elusive club banner was prominently displayed to
announce you'd arrived at the right spot. Nice work Ian.
As they set to set up there was a warming cup of coffee,
and a lending hand if needed. I think it's called
community. I think it's called caring.
Not sure about the weekends threatening bad weather?

Presidents Report
Not a problem just call a club member already on the island.
The information was - as always - freely given, honest and
genuine.
Come up to a particularly nasty creek crossing with another
vehicle already stuck at a precarious angle. Not a problem.
The group gets out, walks the creek together, discusses best
approach and departure points, and then we all cross in
relative ease and safety.
Get stuck in the softer sand because you're pulling a trailer.
No biggie. Always someone there to help with a quick
recovery.
Yep Community & Caring.
Gotta love the LROC Brisbane.

Hi All,
I hope you all had a great Easter break. Personally, the camping trip we had on
Moreton Island was a fantastic experience! I’m still amazed at how much of the island
we got to explore.
But it’s not just about the driving, what made this trip so special was the people we
were with. As I said to JK on the way home—it’s a great club to be a part of!
Cheers
Robbie

The weather can have a significant bearing on the track conditions encountered
before and during the trip. Inclement weather can quickly change an Easy trip to the
difficulty of a Medium or Hard one.
All vehicles attending a trip are to be in good mechanical condition as well as
registered and insured for the intended trip.
RACQ membership is strongly recommended.

Recovery Information
Vehicle recovery may be necessary on any grade of trip. Any recovery is to be
undertaken under the sole direction of the Trip Leader.
Most recoveries involve the use of a snatch strap. A safe distance away when
using a snatch strap is at least twice the length of the strap being used in all
directions from the tow points on both vehicles.
Winching as a recovery method can be extremely hazardous. People have been
killed or seriously injured due to a cable breakage or tow point failure because of
the extreme forces exerted during winching. The utmost care must be taken when
recovering a vehicle using a winch is undertaken. The safe distance is at least 3
times the length of the cable used in all directions from the winching points.
Standing behind a tree or object which is inside the safe recovery distance is not
permitted. Never stand in front or behind any vehicle involved in a recovery,
regardless of the distances.
Rules for doggie friendly trips
1. Doggies are not allowed on trips unless the trip is explicitly marked so
2. Doggies must be under control of their owner at all times
3. Doggies must be well socialized—with other doggies, animals and people
4. Doggies must be well behaved
5. Owners are responsible for their own doggies and their actions, the club takes
no responsibility for your doggie
6. Owners are expected to pick up after their doggie, even if they see others and
their doggies not being so considerate
**Some parks are in a paralysis tic area, it is recommended that doggies have been
treated with anti-tic treatment no more than 2 weeks prior

Wednesday the first day of April - April Fools Day - started as a cruel joke in Brisbane,
with massive rain downpours, power outages and a forecast predicting rain for at least
the next 4 days of epic proportions. What to do if (a) you're planning 4 or so days
away with the club at Moreton??? What to do if your vehicle & trailer is already
packed? The thought of 4 days of wet camping didn't seem to be that appealing.
12
April 15
Trip Report – Easter at Moreton Island
Our ever intrepid Trip Co-ordinator started making phone calls. Revving members up
to not wimp out and finally getting onto the Advanced Guard already encamped on the
island. Young, Ian who had blazed the trail to Comboyura Point campground, had been
on the island since Monday advised that it wasn't too bad, had a bit of rain, but
otherwise OK.
JK and Stuart came across on a ferry departing the Port of Brisbane at 2:30 AM
Thursday morning. Brutal. But not as bad as the western beach at 4:00 AM in pitch
darkness, at high tide and after heavy rain had caused major wash-outs ... and add in
50 or so 4WDs racing to get up the beach. Bit of a slow trip north up the beach then.
April 15
13
Trip Report – Easter at Moreton Island
The first major washout, only about a kilometre up the beach was about a half metre
deep, surpassed by the second which had over a metre drop. Numerous small creeks
as well but too numerous to mention.
Upside was JK & Stuart arrived at the campground about 30 minutes before dawn and
there was no rain. A little bit of excessive noise making and Trevor's Espresso Bar fired
up into action and was open for business serving piping hot, freshly made instant
coffees.
It stayed dry until around 10 in the morning, when a few showers came thru but in the
main, camp setup was completed in the dry. The same patter of weather repeated
itself the next day when Robbie & Tibor arrived. Setting up without rain is always a
good thing! ;)
Saturday saw the club head out in fine weather south to hook up with Middle Road,
cross the island and head north on Eastern Beach in spectacular sunshine, blue waters
& billiard table smooth beach conditions. Heaven.
Not long into the trip, we came across a few damsels in distress. Never fear, Aaron
and the Defender 90 to the rescue! A Prado had found itself straddling one side of
quite a deep washout on the beach. With its rear wheels not gaining any traction at
all, it wasn’t going anywhere. But with Aaron’s Defender snatching and Anthony’s
guidance, they eventually came free, and Aaron won the hearts of those ladies forever!
The club’s second good deed for the day came about when we rolled up to a bogged
Troopie – which also needed a jump start - loaded with backpackers blocking the track
with a Jeep Cherokee close behind. Mum & Son Rustbucket Back-Packer Tours. The
14
April 15
Trip Report – Easter at Moreton Island
owner of the Jeep had no recovery
gear. First job get him out of the
way. Next Anthony crawled past.
“Shouldn’t you unload your
passengers before we snatch you
out?” “Ah nah mate. She’ll be right. I
do this all the time. She’ll start in
two feet. You’ll see”
No matter - JK barking orders in his
finest German soon had back
packers scurrying out the back of the
Trooper. “Aussteigen!! Schnell!!
Aussteigen!!”
Troopie recovered - check;
Troopie restarted - check;
A group of startled back-backers
impressed that a bunch of Germans
selected LandRovers as their 4WD of
choice - check!
A lunch stop at Cape Cliff included a
swim in spectacular conditions.
Next stop was the historic Cape
Moreton Lighthouse. Build by
convicts in 1857, it originally
supported a small community, a
school house & post office before it
was fully automated in 1998.
The early afternoon saw the club
cruising along the northern shore of Morton, visiting North Point, Yellow Patch and
Heath Island before being stopped by a washed out track and the alternative a beach
blocked by the tide and fallen trees. Some quick axe work by club members only
served to create a thirst for more beer, rather than clearing a path.
Backtracking along the beach the club ascended a steep climb, in sand, up off the
beach and onto the Bulwer - North Point Road. All club members made it up easily &
smoothly & JK was yet again able to demonstrate how successfully a Defender can
climb, and how there isn't really any need to ever engage the centre diff lock. (Golden
Gummy nomination?).
The club returned to camp just on dark to prepare meals and either catch some kip
ahead of, or wait up for, the "Blood Moon" Lunar eclipse which was to occur at 11:05
that night.
11:00 PM saw club members around Aaron's tough 90, fire blazing, tipples to hand and
April 15
15
Trip Report – Easter at Moreton Island
no moon to be seen due to heavy, heavy overcast. A few intrepid club members hung
in, there was after all still firewood to be burned, stories to be told & various bevvies to
be consumed.
A bit of a heavy storm then blew in for about 20 mins. The shelter attached to Aaron's
90 proved no match for the rain and wind. We sheltered underneath, holding the
shelter down with one hand and holding a bevvy in the other. It’s a tough life.
Easter Sunday dawned brilliantly clear. Following breakfast & Easter Egg hunts, the
club headed on down to Middle Road again, crossed the island to re-join Eastern
Beach, but on this occasion to head south. Same perfect conditions. We cruised past
White Rock, the Fort Rous Battery, a huge whale skull washed up on the beach and the
Mirapool lagoons.
Right on lunch, the club crawled thru Kooringal, amazed by the number of Land Rovers
that called this village home. Parking up, the crew headed to the world famous Gutter
Bar for the Easter Sunday Special Lunch - 1KG of King Prawns. The prawns were great
the beer & wines cold. Heaven.
After lunch we headed further south a few K's to Short Point for more relaxing,
swimming and taking in the view over South Passage to North Stradbroke Island.
The club headed back to camp along the Western Beach, driving virtually the entire
16
April 15
Trip Report – Easter at Moreton Island
length of the island at low tide. Passing through the mangroves which run from
Toulkerrie, past the Little & Big Sand Hills up as far as Shark Spit we were surprised to
see thousands of crabs scurrying across the exposed mudflats.
Back to camp, afternoon cocktail hour, evening meals and then Darren & Jackie
produced the most lethal game of the entire trip – Pig Out.
Joined by Anthony, Robbie K, Robbie C and Alice, many rounds ensued of attempting a
Double Leaning Jowler (which was actually achieved once by Jackie!) and more than a
few rounds of drinks which meant there was entertainment well into the night.
It was only the next morning we found a couple of club members had enjoyed the
evening a little more than others, but nothing that a quick coffee and the rest of the
day spent on 4WD tracks couldn’t fix!
Easter Monday also dawned clear as a bell. Club members were involved in packing up
(all in the dry - wonderful!!!), and getting set for their various departure times. But
before getting on the ferry, we headed off on one last exploration up to the top of the
island to visit the champagne pools.
It was a fairly straight forward excursion on some of the easier tracks we had been on
that weekend up to the pools where we all very quickly kitted up and jumped in.
April 15
17
Trip Report – Easter at Moreton Island
With Linda standing guard and providing commentary on the incoming waves crashing
over heads, as well as performing her civic duty by ensuring the group of Japanese
tourists beside us were staying safe, we enjoyed a very refreshing drowning and sand
blasting in areas you wouldn’t normally expect!
18
April 15
Trip Report – Easter at Moreton Island
After that, a bite to eat and after a light beer or two under Ian and Linda’s awning,
Robbie, Alice and the kids set off to finish packing and catch the next ferry. The only
memorable section of track heading back was a short but steep climb in soft sand on to
the main track. It was here that a certain driver of a Range Rover Sport decided to
grade the track for everyone else by forgetting to select the maximum suspension
height – another contender for the Golden Gumboot?
While a few of us stayed behind for an extra day or three, the rest of us had now
headed back and attempted to get our heads around normal life. It was a cracker of a
trip, not only for the glorious, unexpected weather, or for how much of the island we
got to see, but also the great company shared by all - whether that was out on the
tracks helping each other out or sharing a tipple around the fire and a few games.

GENUINE ST. JOHN AMBULANCE FIRST AID KITS
What’s the most important bit of kit in a 4WD?
What’s the bit of 4WD kit that most manufacturers never supply?
What’s the bit of kit in a 4WD that’s most often over-looked?
What’s the bit of kit in a 4WD that you hope you never have to use?
… but when you do need it - you’re so, so glad you had it?
Yep, an up-to-date, well stocked First Aid Kit.
The first few minutes after an accident occurs are well known as the most vital ones.
That’s the reason the club mandates First Aid Kits MUST BE CARRIED ON ALL TRIPS,
BY EVERY VEHICLE, AT ALL TIMES. In fact you should get one for your vehicle(s) and
leave it in there – for that ‘just in case moment’.
Your club is fortunate to be supported this month by St. John Ambulance. All St John
first aid kit items are tried and tested by St John’s 13,000 volunteers who use these
items daily to provide first aid at events and in emergencies to over 100,000 people
annually. These are professional quality first aid products.

RANGE ROVER SPORT SDV8 IS 4x4 AUSTRALIA
MAGAZINE’S 2015 4x4 OF THE YEAR
Sydney, Australia, 7th January 2015, - The Range Rover Sport SDV8 has been named
as 4x4 Australia magazine’s 2015 4x4 Of The Year, just edging out the Land Rover Discovery 3.0 SCV6 in the overall results.
The Range Rover Sport tested is powered by a 4.4-litre SDV8 diesel, developing 250kW
and a massive 700Nm torque, the sequential turbo-diesel powertrain delivers uncompromising performance and drivability in real world conditions.
The judges were all impressed with the Range Rover Sport’s extraordinary breadth of
capability, commenting that it combines all the attributes of a luxury wagon, a high
performance sports car and an unstoppable 4WD.
“You just can’t go past the SDV8’s intoxicating mix of performance, economy and refinement” - 4X4 Australia
“The standout feature of the Range Rover Sport is that not only does it have the refinement and features of a luxury car and the on-road performance of a grand touring
saloon, at the end of our week of road testing, the Rangie nailed the toughest off road
stages better than any other finalist vehicle. The SDV8 is a car that does it all and does
it well”. Matt Raudonikis – 4x4 Australia

Land Rover News
“Range Rover Sport – Wow! On the road the Sport is one of the best handling and
most comfortable touring wagons ever built, yet at the flick of a switch it transforms
into an extremely capable off-roader. Oh, and that twin-turbo diesel V8… simply amazing.” - Dean Mellor - 4x4 Australia
“The Range Rover Sport SDV8 has an astonishing depth and breadth of ability. In one
vehicle you have a rugged, go-anywhere 4x4, a luxurious limousine and a potent
sports car. There's nothing quite like it anywhere on the planet - Fraser Stronach – 4x4
Australia
The Range Rover Sport has been engineered to deliver dramatically improved on-road
driving dynamics, with more connected and agile handling complemented by enhanced
ride and refinement. The lightweight aluminum suspension is fully-independent, with
wide-spaced double-wishbones at the front and an advanced multi-link layout at the
rear.
Coming in a close second, just one point behind the Range Rover Sport was Land Rover’s Discovery 3.0 supercharged petrol V6 (SCV6), which performed extremely highly
against all test criteria.
“If you think Land Rover's iconic Discovery is poorer for the loss of its petrol V8, you'd
be wrong. The supercharged V6 that comes in its place offers an intoxicating blend of
flexible performance and superb refinement.” - Fraser Stronach, 4x4 Australia
All finalists are rated against set criteria over 2000kms of road, tracks and soft sand.
The test criteria includes - value for money, breaking ground/advanced technology,
built tough, ‘bushability’ and the ability to do the job as it is intended.

1981 Range Rover Classic For Sale
It is white with good paint, excellent 3.9 motor with 4 speed auto, re-upholstered front
and back seats, original bull bar and tow bar and good tyres. Also has air conditioning
and power front windows. It is unregistered and will have a Blue Slip rego inspection
before sale. I know they’re worth more when they’re original but the 3.9 and auto
combination works well.
I also have an original 78 model that has sat in a paddock for about 6 years. It has a
good body apart from rusty bonnet, and decent tyres. It needs a fuel pump and maybe a fuel tank. It might be suitable as bush basher or farm vehicle or parts. The cars
are near Casino in northern NSW, not that far from Brisbane.
If you’re interested or would like some more information, email Mike Carey at
