What a Month!!!
This has been a
very busy month for
Hereford America!
We’ve tried to make
every event and sale
that we could this
last month. Byron
Marc Hotchkiss
and Pauline covered
what sales out west they could and
Jill and I covered sales and events in
South Dakota, North Dakota,
Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas,
Wyoming and Minnesota over the last
few months. Art Handel also helped
us out when our schedule just
couldn’t fit everything in and that was
much appreciated. Also, a special
thanks to Kay Morgan of Nebraska,
Malynda Carter of North Dakota and
Tom Granzow of Kansas for helping
out.
In looking at my Pilot’s logbook,
I’ve flown 38 hours in the last 30

Cattleman’s Association “Bellringer”
Commercial Heifer Show & Sale took
place. 1000+ ‘Select’ Commercial
females were shown and offered for
sale. The show was divided into carloads
of bred heifers and heifer calves.The
commercial heifers are judged on
soundness,quality,conformation and
usefulness. In the Bred Heifer Division,
Middleswarth Hereford Ranch, Jay
Middleswarth, Torrington, WY was
named Champion Pen. The pen had an
average weight of 1230 lbs. These
heifers also topped the sale averaging
$1400 per head. Middleswarth’s
exhibited the only Herefords in the entire
show and sale. The Middleswarth family
began exhibiting cattle at the NWSS in
the mid 1930’s. In
1975, they exhibited
the
Champion
Carload of Hereford
bulls.
New Hereford Association
Formed in Nebraska
The new Nebraska Hereford Association officially approved their name and by-laws at
an organizational meeting, February 15, 2005 in Kearney, Nebraska.
The new group hosts the combined membership of the former Nebraska Polled Hereford Association and the Nebraska Hereford Association. The two groups had been combining projects such as their annual Hereford Tour, Junior Futurity show, Breeders Directory and Nebraska Hereford News, so the combination of the organizations was the next
logical step. This will enable the new Nebraska Hereford Association to work more efficiently to promote the Hereford breed in Nebraska and improve its member services.
Elected to head the new group is Galen Frenzen of Fullerton, Nebraska. Vice President is Ken McMillen of Sidney. Rounding out the nine member board of directors are
Scott McGee, Fairbury; Doug Bolte, Norfolk; Dave Goertz, Berwyn; Kyle Rutt, Campbell;
Joe Brockman, Lawrence; Brent Meeks, Taylor; and Don Cain, Broken Bow. Kay Morgan will act as interim secretary/manager until a replacement can be found.
The vision statement of the new group is to: Promote the Values of Hereford cattle;
Create a unity between Hereford breeders; Grow the strengths of Hereford youth; and
Honor the efforts of Hereford founders. The motto of the new Nebraska Hereford Association is, “Nebraska Hereford People Make the Difference; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.”

This may be one of
the most lively sale
seasons that I have
seen in my lifetime.
I just returned from
a swing into Idaho
and then northern
Montana and the attitude of the cattle- Byron Bayers
men is really on a high
pitch. We are finally seeing the Hereford cattle on the commercial market
bring the top of the market or right at
the top. The “stealing” by the road
runners is about over with, the demand for our Hereford branded beef
raising every month.
With Certified Hereford Beef hitting
the big high last month and with the
demand for Premium Hereford Beef
also on the rise we can look forward
to a steady and upward market, but
we have some problems facing us
that might be a challenge.

First Stewardship Support project completed
Custom feedlot is a new enterprise for Mrnak family

When Brent Mrnak graduated from
North Dakota State University last winter,
he knew exactly where he was going to
put his commodity broker degree to work
– on his family ranch and newly developed
Brent Mrnak
commercial feedlot south of Bowman.
The Mrnak family – beginning with
Brent’s grandparents, Jim and Marlene,
and continuing today with his parents,
Terry and Debby, and uncle and aunt,
Wayne and Jill – has operated a diversified
farm and ranch there for 50-plus years.
With Brent’s return to the operation and
his interest in commodity marketing and
livestock feeding, the family decided to
launch the new enterprise. “Instead of
buying more land and expanding that way,
it seemed to make more sense to put that
money into this one investment,” Brent
explained. “The feedlot is my project, but
everyone is involved.”
The family mapped out a spot northeast
of the ranch headquarters where Brent’s
mom, Debby, had run 600 ewes for
several years and where two barns, an
indoor hydraulic chute and alley and a few
preliminary corrals were already in place
for the site of the new endeavor.

Scott Ressler got involved in the project
during the early stages. He worked with
Brent and his family and engineers on the
planning and development stages of the
999-head state-permitted lot, its S-shaped
containment dike and clean water
diversion system.
Brent said he learned in a hurry that
developing a feedlot is not an overnight
project. From
the
initial
planning
meeting
to
completion
day,
their
project took an
estimated 18
months
to
finish. “We’d
walk around
for hours and
hours mapping
things out and
planning how
this
could
work,” he said.
“Sometimes,
the engineers
had different
ideas, and that
was good. We all see things a little
differently, and I’m convinced that’s how
we arrived
at the best
plan for
o
u
r
situation.”

completed

Mrnaks converted an open area and a small facility
originally used for sheep into a 999-head custom
feedlot. The feedlot pens are made of sucker rod, pipe
and guard rail. The pipes are cemented in around their
base, but left hollow so water can drain through.

“The traditional
thinking by regulators
that holding ponds are
the only alternative for
livestock-feeding
animal-waste systems
is starting to change,”
said Ressler. “In this
case, and in many
cases, it makes much
more economic and
environmental sense
to use a waterspreading system,
where the feedlot
runoff is separated
from the clean water
and spread across
acres of vegetation,
instead of just digging
a hole.” The soil is
tested before and after a water-spreading
system is put in place to monitor its
nutrient levels and determine whether or
not the system is a viable option for the
location.
The NDSA has been promoting the use
of water-spreading systems, like on the
Mrnak Ranch, and other “alternative
technologies” to producers and
Environmental Protection Agency and
North Dakota Department of Health
regulators for several years.
Mrnaks’ feedlot is complete with pens
on two sides of a 32-foot hard-packedgravel alley, which is a viable option in
southwestern North Dakota, where
excess moisture and high water tables are
not a problem. It took a lot of dirt moving
to achieve the desired depth, Brent said.
In fact, there’s 12 feet of fill in the alley
alone. The family reduced some of their
out-of-pocket cost by hauling much of
the gravel and welding all of the sucker
rod, pipe and guard rail feedlot fence
themselves.

in the alley, instead of in bunks. They
realize this system creates more waste in
terms of feed, Terry said, but the cost is
easily offset by the money they saved by

support, it would have taken a
long time to ever turn a profit on
feeding cattle,” Brent Mrnak said.
“We wanted to design a system
that was relatively maintenancefree. Through the Stockmen’s
Stewardship Support Program,
we were able to do it right the
first time.”

Pipestone, MN. He was sired by Remitall
Kootenay and out of NJW 46B Wilma.
He sold for $5,700 to Robert Larsen,
Verdigre, NE. Second high selling bull was
Lot 28, SPH 10L Wrangler 7N, a
consignment from Springwater Polled
Herefords, Garretson, SD. 7N was sired
by JDH 15 Wrangler and out of MS Exile
Domino. He sold for $4,200 to Elden
Lykken, Alcester, SD. High and second

not purchasing and installing the other alternative, concrete bunks. The only
thing Terry wishes they would have done differently is widen the alley so there
was enough room to turn around with the tractor and feed wagon without having
to drive all the way to the end of it.
Each of Mrnaks’ pens has one mound to help keep it clean and dry and a large
380- or 480-gallon water tank. Keeping good, clean water available to the cattle
is a big part of keeping them healthy and gaining properly, so two wells and a
rural water hookup are available for the feedlot in the event they need them,
Terry said.
The family’s goal is to raise all of the feedstuffs – corn, barley, screenings etc.
– needed to sustain the nearly 4,000 head of feedlot cattle they will turn per year.
With extreme drought conditions in 2004, that didn’t happen in the feedlot’s
inaugural year, but they are hopeful for 2005. In order to meet the new demand
from the feedlot enterprise, Terry said many of their traditional cash-crop wheat
acres will be converted for corn. He anticipates planting 1,000-plus acres this
spring. Consulting nutritionists help Mrnaks make their ration decisions.
The feed supply will help them offer backgrounding, finishing and even heifer
development services to commercial customers. The latter is something Brent is
particularly excited about. “We could use some of the bigger lots and use them
on grass so they get some exercise, develop and even AI-breed them,” he said.
“We have had excellent conception rates on our own heifers – 70 percent bred AI
last year – and are confident we could do the same for our customers.” If that
project goes farther, a grass site immediately north of the existing feedlot could
be an expansion option, he said.
Backgrounding calves will be the lot’s mainstay for now, however, Brent
said. Their customers are responsible for their calves’ marketing, but Mrnaks
help in whatever way they can. Those that have been grown in the Mrnak lot so
far have been sold via a variety of outlets, such as St. Onge Livestock and video
auctions.
Mrnaks are also using the new feedlot to custom feed and finish or even
purchase some of their bull customers’ calves, a practice they began on a small

“It’s neat to be out here at feeding time and see 999 noses sticking out and
eating,” Brent said. “It was hard to envision this all becoming a reality when all
there was out here was a bunch of dirt and a couple of buildings, but it came
together and it will be fun to see develop.”

The sale ring was packed to the rafters
this year at the Black Hills Stock Show
Hereford Sale. Between the Show and Sale
this year were several attractions that
helped build the crowd including a free
lunch sponsored by Ridgefield Farms.
Even though the average was good there
were still bargains to be had at this year’s
sale. Continuing drought in western South
Dakota likely played a part. Quality ran
deep and was the best I’ve seen in a long
time.

Our cowherd is tough. They winter on less than their NRC requirements and still breed back on time because of their bred in feed
efficiency.
We have over ten years of whole herd feedlot and carcass data to
show that the cattle are still breed leading performance cattle. Over
the past five years we have fed 179 steers in three different lots with
an average daily gain of 3.8 lb./day and a feed conversion of 5.3/1.

Many producers are looking at this
decision when they sell their cattle. The
buyers agent makes a deal for the cattle,
weighs them, puts them on the truck and
tells you that somebody, someplace will
mail you a check when the truck gets to
Shangrala or when the cattle are unloaded
and inspected and or re-weighed. If your
LUCKY, in about a week or ten days, you
will receive a check for what your calves
weighed before your loaded them and for
the price you sold them for. Now lets look
at this deal!
I know, you wanted to sell the calves,
the offer was good, delivery time was fine,
the banker wants the money and all sounds
great. Who is this guy you are dealing with,
is he the real buyer or an agent of the real
buyer? When you are dealing with an on
line auction you are probably dealing with
an agent of the buyer. Can and will he
write the check, probably not or more
likely, he can’t write the check. Now let’s
study all the things that can go wrong if
you just wave at your cattle in
the truck when it leaves and the agent just
told you that Joe Blow will mail you the
check tomorrow when the cattle arrive
at the feed lot.
You got the brand inspection and had it
made out to the outfit that are the
supposed buyers, you gave it to the trucker
as he needed it for the trip to NB or KS or
SD. Now lets look at some of the state
laws. MT has a brand inspection law that
all cattle sold must be inspected by a state
Brand Inspector when sold and a bill of
sale must be given at the time but the law
also states that payment must be
completed before the bill of sale is in
effect. So are you protected in MT or
other states where the brand inspection
laws are in effect? What can happen? The
truck can wreck and kill all the calves.
The feedlot operator can go broke in the
interim and doesn’t send the check. The
market has changed and the feeder doesn’t
like the calves or the weight. Then Mr.
Producer, where are you at and what do
you tell your banker? You MAY still own
the cattle but how do you recover them
in NE and take them back or did the
trucker really have insurance or did you
even bother to ask him and did you ask to
see the policy to see what was covered
and the limit?
Your really in deep doo-doo about now.
No money from the calves, banker
furious, wife says how dumb can you get
and the heart starts acting up, your legal
beagle wants a big deposit and expense
money to travel. Problems can be
overwhelming!
Let’s look at some other ways maybe
we should approach our deals. If you sell
by a video auction or by contract, be sure
that the method of payment is clearly
stated to you and your banker ’s
satisfaction. Is payment on site
acceptable, as state laws usually require

I’LL SEND THE CHECK
when the cattle arrive!
bonding of purchasing agents, but is the
bonding adequate enough to cover your
sale? In MT it is not big enough to cover
most truckload lots. What about wire
transfer? A good method but the truck
has to sit and wait for the completion of
the transaction. Make sure this is covered
in the original transaction. Your banker
can probably set this all up for you with
the purchaser. Don’t forget the time
zones. If you really want the real buyer
to send you the check, protect yourself,
at least in this manner. Ship the cattle in
your name to the destination where the
feedlot is located and then when you
clear the check, send the bill of sale. This
still doesn’t protect you from the truck
wreck or finding the cattle if something
goes wrong but at least they are still your
cattle.
Talk to your banker and your lawyer
for help and advice. Probably 99% of
people that you deal with are honest but
that one percent can really ruin your day
or even your life. Sometimes deals come
apart because of accidents, health, or
nature but the end result to you in the
case of non payment is disaster.

This writer has been through some of
the problems that I have talked about so

I am talking through 55 years of
experience. I had a big visit with two
bankers about this article. Their statement
was that in the past they just expected
the rancher to bring the money into the
bank but did agree that it would be good
for the producer to talk to their banker
about the procedure. A big cattle buyer
from SD told me that all the funds for
him are up front, none of this, “It’s in the
mail,” stuff. An auction barn owner in ND
and SD told me that it is just a matter of
time before the “Nonpayment” appears
from some cattle buyer, and then you get
bit. This man got bit to the tune of
$250,000. Maybe it is time for you
commercial ranchers to re-evaluate how
you do business when you sell your cattle.
Seedstock operators need to take a look
at things too. I have talked to several
purebred breeders in the past year that
have made deals with so called big name
firms and yet no money has been
forthcoming. Isn’t it prudent to get a
check when the deal is made and then
ship the cattle? The day when we shake
hands with a stranger and it is a deal, is
about gone.
Times have changed and so must we
in this business. Big or small operator, a
good business deal only ends with what
is called “consideration”, in most cases
that is money.

Livestock, Star, ID for $4,250. They have
been top bull buyers of ours for many,
many years!
Another “552” calving ease son sold to
Seid Ranch for $3,800. Seids have also
been repeat buyers for many years.
A “552” son we used on our heifers
last year went to Ironside Associates for
$3,750.
The Mister Mom and 552 sons were
very much in demand that day. With the
exception of the 2 top selling bulls, the
rest of the bulls all went to commercial
ranches.

Stroh’s had a nice day for their bull sale
in Dickinson this year. This was the first
year I remember not having to go in to
warm up and then come back to look
some more. Tony and Mike had the bulls
looking good for buyers before the sale.
Top-selling bull was Lot #325, SH
Bonanza 325, an April, 2003 bull sired by
F Bonanza 027, that sold to Entzi Ranch
of ND for $4,000.
Kent Oland of Sheldon, ND purchased
Lot #365, SH Explorer 365, an April, 2003
bull sired by F Explorer 953, for $2,500.
Three bulls were purchased for $2,400
each. Entzi Ranch of ND purchased Lots
336 and 337, sons of F Bonanza 027 and
F Explorer 953 for $2,400.
Woroniecki Bros. of Hebron, ND also
purchased a bull for $2,400. SH Bonanza
3119 is a Sept, 2003 son of F Bonanza

for $3,100 to Kirk Harkis of Forsyth, MT.
The two-year old bulls were topped on
another herd sire prospect that displayed
exceptional thickness and volume. This bull
posted a 72 pound birth weight with a +0.6
BW EPD and Rodgers had used him on
many of the bred heifers prior to him being offered. Ron Schutte & Sons of Guide
Rock, NE bid $6,000 to own this big, yellow bull. The next top was on an April
2003 son of Mohican Jake that sold to
repeat buyer, Hendren Ranch, of Bodega
Bay, CA for $3,500.
Also selling for $3,500 was a March
2003 son of the Revolution bull that was
a full brother to the famous “Beauty Spot”
heifer that sold in the Rodgers first sale
and went on to a sterling show career.
This bull sold to Duane Pancheri of Melba,
ID.
Next came the other bull that Rodgers
had used as a service sire for his heifers.
He was a March 2003 son of Right Time
and sold for $3,000 to Salmon Falls Land
& Livestock of Hagerman, ID.
Topping the females was the first heifer
to enter the ring, a March 2003 daughter
of Masterplay that sold for $2,500 to Little
Creek Ranch of Parma, ID.
Also selling for $2,500 was an April
2003 daughter of Mohican Jake purchased
by Gomez Farms of Buhl, ID. Gomez
Farms also purchased an April 2003

What a great day it was for the Mrnak
family at their 38th annual sale. Gorgeous
weather greeted cattlemen as they studied
the excellent offering of bulls and heifers.
Included in this year’s offering were the
outstanding bulls from Mrnak’s Grand
Champion Pen of Three from last year’s
Denver Stock Show. They were the clear
favorites of the day followed by a very
strong offering throughout. Buyers from
14 states were on the seats or on the
internet assessing the offering. A very
strong, well deserved sale for Mrnaks.
Top Lots: Lot 388, MH Star Lad 388, a
3/24/03 son of MH Lad 9216 sold to
James Powell, Ft. McKavett, TX for
$10,000. This bull had the following EPDs:

and M&G +52 as well as an 88 lb. BW,

wt. This bull was one of the Champion

Lot 3146, MH Dakota 3146, a 3/30/03

selling for $8500 to Stuber Ranch,
Bowman, ND. He was the lead off bull in
Mrnak’s 2004 Champion Pen. His EPDs

Powell purchased another top bull, Lot
3249, for $6,500. MH Dakota Lad 3249,

Bud Day of Meadow, SD for $4,100 and

A standing room only crowd and an
equal number of people viewing the auction via a live broadcast on the internet
made for a sale much higher in all classes
of cattle sold. Cattle selling to the crowd,
on the phones and on the internet created
the highest sale in the 47 years of sales
for Rausch Herefords.
Lot #79, R Pathfinder 2963, was the
top-selling bull going to David Thompson of ND for $5,750. 2963 is an 04/07/03
polled son of EPHR Pathfinder 567K with
a birth weight of 88 lbs.
Lot 62, GR Comet 523, 03/26/03 son
of R Comet 2081, was purchased by Bob
Hermann of SD for $5,500.
Nuhsbaumer Herefords of SD
purchased Lot 51, R Ribstone 2273 for
$4,750. 2273 was sired by R Ribstone
146 with a birth weight of 88 lbs. and

Top-selling heifer was Lot 105, R Miss
Combo 1044. This 04/09/04 daughter of
FAF Basic Solution 20J was a beautiful
heifer going for a top dollar of $5,000 to
Wager Show Cattle of SD.
Dick Wettlaufer of SD purchased Lot
115, R Miss Combo 584, for $2,400. This
good heifer was also sired by FAF Basic
Solution 20J.
Mike Berning of IA and Eric Tesch of
SD both purchased their heifers for
$1,800. They were Lots 114 and 106, R
Miss Advance 3334 and R Miss Combo
1034, consecutively. Lot 106, purchased
by Eric, was a twin to Lot 105, the highselling heifer.
Volume bull buyers were Richard
Kolousek of SD purchasing 5 and David
Thompson, ND and Jason Mallon, SD
each purchasing 4 bulls.
Jeff Wiedemann, CA purchased 66
females and North Ridge Ranch of SD
purchased 35 heifers.

of Choteau, MT for $3,400.
WR C8 Victor 17L 307 sold to
Merrimac Cattle Co. of Geyser, MT for
$3,000.
John Holden and guest Hereford
consignors McMurry Cattle of Billings,
MT and Brownell Polled Herefords of
Conrad, MT sold a nice group of Polled
Herefords to a very receptive crowd of
basically Angus commercial breeders.
The good Angus bulls were all
consigned by Holden and sold at a rapid
pace. Auctioneer Roger Jacobs sold the
sixty-one bulls in one hour and twenty
minutes in his usual fine manner.
This was a good, solid sale on a useful
set of bulls.
