Member-Guest Battle Intense
June 15-18, 2016
Welcome to the 2016 Battle Intense Member/Guest Tournament at
Fair Oaks Ranch Golf and Country Club.
We are looking forward to hosting another successful and enjoyable
tournament. The Battle is the highlight event of the Men's Golf
Association's yearly schedule. The competition will include rounds on
both the Live Oak and Black Jack Oak golf courses. Inside this
Players Booklet you will find all of the tournament information needed
to keep you on track for the event. This includes a schedule of events,
event formats, tournament rules, and descriptions of payouts for the
overall tournament . On the next pages you will find a listing of the
Tournament Committee members and Fair Oaks Staff members. If you
have any questions please ask someone on this list and they will be
happy to help you.
Contributions by our sponsors have not only enabled us to enhance
the experience of this event but also allow us to provide a significant
donation to the Hal Lynch Scholarship Foundation, Hill Country Animal
League, Kendall County Women’s Shelter, and Heartland Children’s
Home.
Thank you to all of our sponsors!
A listing of all players in the tournament as of June 9th is included in
this booklet, however, flight breakdowns are not included but are
available at the check in desk. The Tournament Committee and
Fair Oaks Staff have worked hard to organize a competitive and
enjoyable tournament. If there is anything we can do to make this
event extra special please don't hesitate to ask.
Once again, welcome and good luck!

HAL LYNCH Memorial Scholarship
st
This is the 31 anniversary of the Hal Lynch Foundation. Our founder and
War Hero, Hal Lynch was a decorated World War II veteran. He worked as
a Director for the YMCA and retired to San Antonio. An active golfer, Hal
was a member of the Fair Oaks Golf and Country Club. In 1986 he started
and for 14 years served as Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee that
now bears his name. Hal Lynch’s lifelong vocation of helping to develop
young men and women continues through this scholarship. He believed in
a well-rounded background in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities,
family values, work ethic and community service. Hal died in 2005, but he is
memorialized with this scholarship program. Since 1986, 220 deserving
students have received Hal Lynch scholarships.
Hill Country Animal League
Since the inception of Hill Country Animal League (HCAL, established in
1986), over 50,000 spay/neuter surgeries have been provided which has
helped to stop millions of unwanted pets from being born. HCAL works
directly with the general public and collaborates with multiple nonprofit
animal rescue groups, local city and county animal service programs,
schools and other nonprofit agencies to help encourage the importance of
pet sterilizations within the greater Hill Country area. The overall goal is to
reduce the number of breeding animals in an effort to decrease the number
of stray and orphaned animals on the streets, in our communities and in our
shelters. We accomplish this measure by working with multiple animal
rescue groups and their adoption efforts.
Kendall County Women’s Shelter
The mission of the Kendall County Women's Shelter is to provide safe,
emergency shelter in a supportive environment where Texas Hill Country
victims of domestic violence and their children can begin the healing
process and receive the support services they need to build new lives. The
Kendall County Women's Shelter Administrative Office is at 930 N. School
Street, P O Box 1087 Boerne, TX 78006. Business Office: 830-331-8950
Heartland Children’s Home
Heartland Children's Home was founded by Mike and Ruth Schwartz who
have been the loving foster parents for more than 140 children over the past
19 years. They, along with their daughter Dawn and several round the clock
nurses, provide care for up to twelve medically fragile children at any given
time. These children suffer from complications of shaken baby syndrome,
prenatal drug exposure, HIV and AIDS, and other diseases and disabilities.
The children are often dependent on feeding tubes, ventilators, and
medication for survival. Many of the children are disabled because of abuse
or neglect by their birth parents.

Battle Intense Flights
Flight #1 Secretariat
16 wins from 21 starts. Sired by Bold Ruler, Secretariat became the first
Triple Crown champion in twenty-five years in 1973, while setting new race
records in two of the three events -a win by 12 furlongs in the Belmont
Stakes and an unofficial track record at Pimlico--that still stand today. In
2005, Secretariat was the only non-human to make ESPN's list of "Greatest
Sports Performances" (by individual athletes), with his run at Belmont
ranking second. Perhaps no other horse has brought as much excitement
and attraction to the sport as this star power stallion.
Flight #2 Man o’ War
20 wins from 21 starts. During his career just after World War I, Man 0' War
was the first great race horse to really capture the public's imagination and
raise horse racing in the public consciousness. His
lone loss, ironically to a horse named Upset, came during his 2-year-old
season in the 1919, but cannot spoil an otherwise dominating career from
this strapping stallion.
Flight #3 Kelso
39 wins from 63 starts. "Mighty" Kelso, as he was aptly called, is the only
gelding on our list. Named Horse of the Year an astonishing five times from
1960-1964, a feat that has never be matched, he is perhaps the most
durable and fearless of all the horses on our list, taking on any contender
that came his way. Kelso competed for eight seasons, from 1959 to 1966,
and as his career raced on, so did his popularity.
Flight #4 Spectacular Bid
26 wins from 30 starts. The "Bid" as he was called, set numerous time
records during his career and won 12 consecutive races. But he would be
denied the Triple Crown in 1979, coming up short at the Belmont Stakes by
what most say was a poor ride by jockey Ron Franklin. A threat to break the
track record every time he rounded the racetrack, he never lost between 7
furlongs and 1Y. miles. His astounding 1 :57.4 in the 1980 Strub still stands
as the record for 10 furlongs at Santa Anita. Flight
Flight #5 Seattle Slew
14 wins from 17 starts. Winner of the 1977 Triple Crown, he remains he only
horse to do so while undefeated. Remembered for his "war dance"
(tiptoeing on the track before his races), and his battles with Affirmed,
Seattle Slew was honored in 1977, being named US Champion three-yearold as well as winning the Eclipse Award for American Horse of the Year.
Flight #6 Seabiscuit
3 wins from 89 starts. After failing to win in his first 10 races, this bay colt
was sold for the mere price of $8,000, but later became an unlikely
champion and a symbol of hope to many Americans during the Great
Depression. The most memorable race that Sea biscuit ran was on
November 1, 1938. Known as the "Match of the Century," the then-five year
old ran against 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral on the 1 and 3/16
miles at Pimlico Race Course. With over 40,000 at the track and some 40
million listening on the radio, Seabiscuit pulled away in the closing stretch,
finally winning by four clear lengths. As a result, Seabiscuit was named
"Horse of the Year" for 1938.

Battle Trivia
The City of Fair Oaks Ranch evolved from several parcels of land acquired
by oilman Ralph Fair, Sr. during the 1930s. The working ranch, which had a
dairy and granary, was first a center for Mr. Fair’s racehorse operation.
Later, Mr. Fair established a registered Hereford cattle operation including a
cutting-edge artificial insemination program.
Through The Years
The ranch developed its own Hereford bloodline from a bull named Battle
Intense and today the renowned bovine is given tribute at an annual golf
tournament bearing his name. After the death of Mr. and Mrs. Fair, the
family decided to develop a portion of the ranch as a residential community
in 1975. In 1978 the 14,000 sq. ft. Fair home became a country club and to
this day remains a focal point for social activity on The Ranch
