CONNOLLY CENTER
The Connolly Center’s North Court is Seattle
University’s home for womens basketball and
volleyball and creates an intimate and intimidating environment to watch the Redhawks’
home games.
With a 1,050 seating capacity, the Connolly
Center North Court is one of the smallest
gyms in NCAA Division I. But what it lacks in
size is made up for in its ability to be a true
home-court advantage. With the front row of
seats just feet from the sidelines, the Connolly Center North Court can be a truly intimidating place to play for opponents.
That home-court advantage has become
evident in recent years. Last season, the
women’s basketball team went 14-6 at home
and won two Women’s Basketball Invitational
Postseason Tournament games on their home
court.
This season, the team will host the Washington Dental Service Thanksgiving Tournament
at the Connolly Center, hosting Portland, Boston College, and Sacred Heart on Friday, Nov.
23 and Saturday, Nov. 24.

HEAD COACH JOAN BONVICINI
JOAN BONVICINI
Head Women’s Soccer Coach - Seattle University
Fourth Season
Career Coaching Record: 646-352 (.647)
Coaching Record at Seattle U: 34-58 (.370)
Joan Bonvicini, one of the most successful coaches in women’s collegiate basketball history and former coach at the
University of Arizona and Long Beach State, was named head
coach of the Seattle University women’s basketball team on
Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009.
The veteran head coach enters her fourth season at Seattle
University behind an all-time 646-352 (.647) record and is
currently 11th on the NCAA Division I all-time wins list for
women’s college basketball. She became the 18th coach in
NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to reach the 600win mark in February 2007. The Redhawk head coach also
boasts 21 20-win seasons over her historic coaching career.
Bonvicini led the Redhawks to one of the most successful seasons in program history during the 2011-12 season,
notching their first 20-win season as an NCAA Division I program, as well as leading them to their first Division I postseason appearance (and wins) in school history. Seattle U made
it to the semifinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational
before falling to the University of Northern Iowa, 68-64.
Seattle U showed significant improvement during the 201011 season, earning eight victories against a tough schedule.
The team earned victories at Portland and at Long Beach
State as well as home wins over Idaho, Navy, and Eastern
Washington. Behind the work of Bonvicini, the Redhawks
also hosted the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament, featuring Bowling Green, UALR, and Montana State, and the State
Farm Holiday Classic, involving eventual national finalist
Notre Dame, Elite Eight team Gonzaga, and Loyola Marymount.
Bonvicini helped guide the Redhawks through their first full
season at the NCAA Division I level. During the season, she
coached Seattle U to six DI victories in 2009-10. Under
the first season head coach’s tutelage senior Ashley Brown
to become the most prolific three-point shooter in SU history, behind 87 three’s in a single season. Brown was also
named MVP of the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament, to the
Longwood All-Tournament Team and to the All-Independent
Second Team. Fellow senior Cassidy Murillo earned Seattle U
Thanksgiving All-Tournament Team honors and junior Tatiana
Page 4
Heck was named to the All-Independent Second Team, as
well.
In addition to their improvement and growth as a reclassifying institution on the court, the Redhawks saw great success
in the classroom. Seattle U was named to the WBCA Top 25
Team Honor Roll among all NCAA DI institutions. The Redhawks were ranked No. 20 for their team cumulative grade
point average of 3.341.
Prior to joining Seattle U, she coached 13 All-Americans and
two former US Olympic Team members. While at Arizona, 54
student-athletes earned Pacific-10 accolades and 21 earned
conference academic honors.
At Arizona, Bonvicini accumulated a 287-223 (.563) record
over 17 seasons. She led the Wildcats to nine postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournament berths and the
WNIT Championship in 1996. She was head coach at Arizona
from 1991 to 2008.
Bonvicini is in five halls of fame: the Southern Connecticut
State Hall of Fame (1989), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (1994), the Long Beach State Athletic
Hall of Fame (1996), the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame
(2005), and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame
(2007).
She started her head coaching career at Long Beach State
in 1979, posting a 325-71 record (.821) in her 12 seasons
with the 49ers. Long Beach State won 24 games or more
every season with Bonvicini at the helm. The 49ers earned
ten conference championships and ten straight berths in the

With the 49ers, she was named the 1981 NCAA Division I
Coach of the Year. Following the 1985-86 season she was
named the Region VIII and PCAA Coach of the Year. In 1984,
she was named WCAA Coach of the Year and has also been
honored by the city of Long Beach as their 1989 “Citizen of
the Year”.
The East Coast native spent two seasons as an assistant at
Long Beach State before being promoted to head coach at
age 25. Prior to joining the 49ers, she began her coaching career as an assistant at Cal Poly - Pomona in Southern
California.
A guard during her playing days, Bonvicini helped Southern
Connecticut State earn third-and fourth-place finishes in
the AIAW Championships. In 1975, she was named Region
I-A MVP and an honorable mention All-American. She was a
finalist for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team.

KRISTEN O’NEILL (Fourth Season/Washington ‘06)
Associate Head Coach
Kristen O’Neill is entering her fourth year with the women’s basketball program at Seattle University, and was promoted
to Associate Head Coach in 2012. She was hired by Joan Bonvicini on August 31, 2009. O’Neill is involved in all
aspects of the program, especially: scouting, recruiting, player development, strength and conditioning, and academics. During her first season as the team’s academic coordinator, the Redhawks were named to the 2010 WBCA Top 25
Academic Honor Roll with a cumulative team GPA of 3.34.
O’Neill is well known throughout the Seattle basketball community for her success as a standout player at the interscholastic, intercollegiate and professional levels. O’Neill was a high school All-American at Meadowdale (Lynnwood,
WA) and Gatorade’s Washington State Player of the Year in 2001. She played collegiately at the University of Washington from 2001-2006
where she was a three-time co-caption and four-year starter. She was UW’s Defensive Player of the Year twice (2002 and 2003), a 2002
Pacific-10 All-Freshman Team honoree and the Coaches Award recipient in 2006. O’Neill graduated with honors in 2006 with a degree in
communication. She then went on to play professionally in the highest division of FIBA’s Euroleague for teams in Madrid and Burgos, Spain.
In 2008, O’Neill returned to Seattle and played in the WNBA for the Seattle Storm. She concluded her professional career in Limerick, Ireland
and became the Superleague Player of the Year in 2009.
DORENA BINGHAM (Second Season/Seattle U ‘85)
Assistant Coach
Dorena Bingham enters her second season on the Seattle U women’s basketball coaching staff. Bingham, a 1985
graduate of Seattle U, brings a wealth of coaching experience at the high school and youth national team levels to the
Redhawk women’s hoops program. She has assisted with all aspects of the program, working with both the guards and
post players. Additionally, she assists with the team’s recruiting efforts.
Outside of the collegiate ranks, Bingham has experience as an assistant coach for USA Basketball’s U17 women’s team.
During her tenure with USA Basketball, she helped guide the U17 team to the gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World
Championships and the U16 squad to the 2009 gold medal at the FIBA Americas tournament. Bingham has also been
the head coach of Team Alaska’s AAU team since 1991 and coached the varsity basketball team at East Anchorage High School for 15 season,
where she guided her team’s to 10 Alaska State Tournaments and three titles. Bingham has a storied history with Bonvicini and her coaching
staff. She was also the former AAU coach of former Redhawk Talisa Rhea (Anchorage, Alaska).
SHAQUALA WILLIAMS (First Season/Oregon ‘02)
Assistant Coach
Bonvicini announced the hiring of assistant coach Shaquala “Shaq” Williams starting in the 2012-13 season. At Seattle U, Williams will primarily be in charge of the Redhawks’ skill development of guards and wings, scouting opponents,
recruiting, and coordinating the team’s camps.
At the collegiate level, Williams was a four-year varsity basketball letter winner and three-time All-Pac-10 honoree at
the University of Oregon, as well as being named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year (1999) and Pac-10 Player of the Year
(2000). In 2001, she had the opportunity to compete in the USA Basketball World University Games in Beijing, China.
Outside of athletics, she excelled academically and in leadership, attending the 2001 Pac-10 Conference Leadership
Conferences in San Francisco, Calif. and the 2001 NCAA National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. She also received the 2000 Higden

Professionally, she played for WNBA teams in Los Angeles and Seattle from 2003-2005, and in Meblotap, Poland and Burhaniye, Turkey from
2005-06.
Before coming to Seattle U, Williams served as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Sacramento State University. While there, her duties
included overseeing skill development for point and shooting guards, coordinating recruitment strategies, and providing oversight for studentathlete academic development. Prior to Sacramento State, she also was the Director of Skill Development and Coaching for the Team Players

2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW
The Seattle University women’s basketball team will play its first
season in the Western Athletic Conference and with full Division
I status, after competing as an Independent during Division I
reclassification the past four years. This season they will have
the chance to compete in the WAC tournament and compete for
an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
“Well, I think the first year in the WAC, this is our opportunity,” said head coach Joan Bonvicini. “I think the best way to
describe, going in, is cautiously optimistic. We know we have
a good core group, but there’s always unknowns. The biggest
unknown is that we really don’t know these other teams. We
know a lot of them come from different conferences, but we also
know there’s a lot of good coaches in the league. Once we’re
in conference play, we’re going to learn a lot in the first round
[of games], a lot about each team and ourselves. But I know
that with my having been in a number of different conferences,
they’ll be well-prepared. I’m very excited about this opportunity.”
Bonvicini will be returning a mixture of returning and new talent, losing key players to graduation, but also adding newcomers
that will make immediate contributions to the team’s success.
SENIORS
With the graduation of top players like Talisa Rhea, who finished
averaging 14.1 ppg and led the team with 165 assists in 201112, and Elle Kerfoot, who became just the 11th player in program history to pass the 1,000 career point mark, the Redhawks
will now look to this year’s upperclassmen to lead the team.
Seniors Maggie McCarthy (Burlingame, Calif.), Daidra Brown (Seattle, Wash.), and Brenda Adhiambo (Mombasa, Kenya), will provide
senior leadership for the team this season. Brown led the team
with 58 steals in 2011-12 and McCarthy, returning from a knee
injury last season, is now 100% recovered and ready to tackle
the team’s first season in the WAC.
Bonvicini on McCarthy: “Maggie was a roleplayer last year. I think
she’s improved her jumper, she’s smart, and she’s going to have
an excellent senior year.”
Bonvicini on Adhiambo: “Brenda is ready for a breakout year. She
came as a junior college transfer last season and had a good
year, but I think that [transition] is so much like a player coming
from high school as a freshman. It’s learning the system and
adjusting to college life in a more rigorous setting, and she’s
done well. I always tell her I want a double-double, and I think
we’ll see her have a really good season. I’m really excited for
her, she’s a great offensive player.”
Bonvicini on Brown: “Daidra, as a sophomore, led us in steals
and was one of the tops in the country. Last year, she played a
lot of minutes, but did it coming off the bench. I think you’ll see
her more in a starting role this year and having the ball more in
her hands. She’s still quick, but she has improved her jumper
tremendously and is one of our best on-ball defenders.”
JUNIORS
The Redhawks’ top tier junior class, consisting of Kacie Sowell
(Ventura, Calif.), Ashley Ward (Irvine, Calif.) and Sylvia Shephard
(Alta Loma, Calif.) will prove to be a driving force in the team’s
success this season. Sowell averaged a double-double, recording
18 total over the season, and was named the Women’s Basketball Independent Player of the Year in 2011-12. Ward led the
team in free-throw shooting percentage (84.9 percent), ranking
26th in NCAA Division I. Shephard received a College Sports
Madness Independent Player of the Week award and ranked
second on the team with 164 total rebounds. They will each
only add to their success from the past two years, and are sure
to have very exciting junior seasons.
Bonvicini on Sowell: “Kacie is coming off a very, very good
sophomore year, but seeing her now in practice, she’s [even] improved. She’s been able to develop more moves in the low post,
and has definitely added a nice jumper from both the high post
and a little bit further out. More than anything, the bar has been
raised [as a program], but she has also raised the bar personally.
She expects more from herself, and she’s been named one of
our captains. I’m excited about her future and I’m excited about
this season for her, because she’s a very hard worker and a great
person.”
Bonvicini on Ward: “Ashley also has improved. We’re going to
see her more at the perimeter. We will see her a little bit at the
post, but more at the perimeter. She gives us good size and is
smart. She’s versatile, she can drive, she can shoot the three,
but she’s really deadly with her midrange jumper. She’s also very
good getting to the basket. She shoots a lot of free-throws, she
led us in free-throw percentage [last year]. I think for both Kacie
and Ashley, you’ll see their numbers go up. Not just that they’re
scoring more, but that their percentages go up.”
Bonvicini on Shephard: “Sylvia, more than anyone, I think, is going to show the biggest improvement. I knew when we recruited
her, she had really good numbers, but I really think this year is
going to be the year that people are going to see Sylvia as an excellent jumpshooter, coming off the dribble or screen. The thing
that we’ve really gotten her to do is get to the basket, and be
a really good offensive rebounder. She’s physical, she’s strong,
and still very quick. I’m excited for her and for us.”
SOPHOMORES
This year’s sophomore class, Renee Dillard-Brown (Seattle, Wash.)
and Makenna Clark (Auburn, Wash.) played a combined 32 games
in 2011-12, but, with work they’ve put in during the offseason,
will look to increase their influence and clock more minutes for
the Redhawks in 2012-13.
Bonvicini on Clark: “Makenna is a very good player, is smart, and
will come off the bench, but I think we’ll see her a lot more in
action this year. She’s a good three-point shooter and has excellent leadership skills.”
Bonvicini on Dillard-Brown: “Renee has improved tremendously.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW
She’s smart, is in better shape and condition, and is much more
physical. Her minutes will be up, she’s a better rebounder, and
is one of our best leaders.”
FRESHMEN
Three of this year’s five freshman, including redshirt freshman
Kim Flournoy (San Diego, Calif.) hail from California. True freshmen Shelby Dougherty (Fullerton, Calif.) and Catherine Perez (Palo
Alto, Calif.) also hail from the Golden State, while Kristin Stoffel
(Mill Creek, Wash.) and Taelor Ross (Vancouver, Wash.) are from
the state of Washington. These student-athletes have already
shown potential and improvement in practice and will make an
immediate impact for the Redhawks this season.
Bonvicini on Flournoy: “Kim is coming off a knee injury, and is
now 100%, but is really getting used to what it means to play
at this level. She has good size and quickness, and is someone
who will continue to improve as she really begins to trust her
knee.”
Bonvicini on Dougherty: “Shelby will be a point guard, and is a
smart, excellent assist player and good shooter. She’ll be coming off the bench in a complimentary role.”
Bonvicini on Stoffel: “Kristin is smart. She is a good perimeter
shooter, can hit the three-pointer, and understands basketball;
she’s been well-coached.”
Bonvicini on Perez: “Cat can hit the three-point shot and is making the adjustment to college basketball. She’s someone who, I
think, will be improving as the season goes on.”
Bonvicini on Ross: “Taelor has improved tremendously. I think
she’ll definitely get time, probably in spots, but she’s going to
be a force. [She’s a] great rebounder, and is learning the game
of basketball and tempo, but she’s going to be a good player.”
SCHEDULE
Seattle U women’s basketball will open up 2012-13 with eight
of their first nine games played on their home court, including
exhibition matches. The Redhawks begin the season with exhibition contests versus Simon Fraser (Nov. 1) and Western Washington (Nov. 3) before opening up the regular season versus
Pacific (Nov. 9).
“Both of our exhibitions are versus smart, well-coached teams.
It’s a really good way for us to measure and see where we are.
Pacific is a team we lost to in OT [last season] and they ended
up having a great year. They went to the NIT and beat Arizona
State in the first round, and are now favored to win the Big West
[this year]. They have a good team, so that’s going to be a challenge.”
Nov. 14 will be a special day, as Bonvicini coaches her 1000th
career game versus cross-town rival Washington at KeyArena.
Page 8
“Washington had a very good year, much better than a lot of
people thought. They’re returning the Pac-12 Freshman of the
Year and are bringing back Krista Kingma, a very good guard
who was injured last year. They’re going to have great perimeter
scoring, so we just know it’s going to be a good game.”
The Redhawks will also host preseason games versus UC Irvine
(Dec. 1) and Portland State (Dec. 9) as well as the Washington
Dental Service Thanksgiving Tournament (Nov. 23-24) versus
Portland, Boston College, and Sacred Heart.
“Portland is well-coached, solid, and smart. Boston College has
a new coaching staff from the ACC, and they’re very athletic and
smart. Sacred Heart is a team similar to us, a great midmajor,
and they won 25 games last season.”
Seattle U will play only three non-conference games on the
road, at Colorado State (Nov. 17), Pepperdine (Dec. 14), and
BYU (Dec. 20).
“Colorado State is going to be our first road challenge. BYU is
going to be a great game, as they won the West Coast Conference tournament and went to the NCAA’s last season. They’re
returning their size and their point guard, so it’s going to be a
tough challenge for us.”
On Dec. 29, the Redhawks will travel to nearby Idaho for their
first ever WAC contest, and will play their first WAC home games
versus Utah State (Jan. 3) and San Jose State (Jan. 5) right
after the new year. Conference play will lead up to the WAC
Championships on March 12-16 in Las Vegas, Nev., where all
10 teams will compete.
Bonvicini on her 1000th career game on Nov. 14 vs. UW: “One
thousand games is crazy when you think about it, but I feel as
energized and as excited as when I first started. I’ve had some
of the best players to ever play the game, but this experience
here at Seattle U has been probably my most rewarding. To
see the change from the beginning to now and how the players
have changed, what their expectations are, how the program
has grown, it’s been fun. I feel very very fortunate to have this
opportunity here.”

2011-12 SEASON REVIEW
After a historic season and postseason
run for the Seattle University women’s
basketball team, their season came to an
end one game shy of the championship
game, as the University of Northern Iowa
came away with the win in the Women’s
Basketball Invitational semifinals, 68-64.
Despite the loss, this season and this team
will be remembered as one of the greatest
teams in Seattle U women’s basketball
history.
Among their vast accomplishments, the
team notched the first 20-win season as an
NCAA Division I program. They also reached
their first NCAA Division I postseason, the
first postseason appearance for any Seattle
U team since the school began the NCAA
Division I reclassification process during the
2008-09 school year.
The Redhawks more than doubled, and
nearly tripled, their win total from one
season ago, finishing 20-12 after finishing
8-22 during the 2010-11 season. They
finished 14-6 on their home court, winning
12 of their last 15 home contests.
Sophomore Kacie Sowell was named to the
WBI All-Tournament Team and was also
named Independent Women’s Basketball
Player of the Year. Coach Joan Bonvicini was
named Independent Women’s Basketball
Coach of the Year. College Sports Madness
named a Seattle U player the Independent
Player of the Week ten times over the
season (Sowell six times, senior Talisa Rhea
three times, and sophomore Sylvia
Shephard once).
Page 19
Sowell recorded 18 double-doubles over the
season and finished as the team’s leading
scorer. She averaged a double-double for the
season, averaging 14.3 ppg and 10.2 rpg.
Rhea finished as the team’s second leading
scorer, averaging 14.1 ppg and 4.5 rpg.
Rhea also led the team with 165 assists.
Sophomore Ashley Ward also finished
the season averaging in double figures,
averaging 10.3 ppg and 3.5 rpg.
Nationally, Sowell tied for ninth in NCAA
Division I in double-doubles (18), finished
fifth in the nation in field-goal percentage
(56.6 percent), Ward finished 26th in NCAA
Division I free-throw percentage (84.9
percent), and Rhea finished 26th in the
country in assists per game (5.2).
Senior Elle Kerfoot also became Seattle
U’s all-time leader in made three-pointers
(finishing with 193) and became the 11th
player in program history to pass the 1,000
career point mark (finished with 1,077 total
career points).

IN THE CLASSROOM
Seattle University student-athletes in general, and the
women’s basketball team specifically, enjoy success not
only in athletic competition, but also in the academic
world.
The women’s basketball team was recognized for its performance in the classroom during the 2009-10 academic
year, being named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches
Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Honor Roll. This
honor placed the Redhawks at No. 20 among all NCAA DI
women’s basketball programs, with a cumulative 3.341
GPA that year.
In June 2012, Talisa Rhea graduated magna cum laude
with a degree in sport and exercise science, Carley Butcher graduated cum laude with a degree in strategic communications, and Amani Butler and Elle Kerfoot also received
degrees in strategic communications. Team managers
Monica Nevi and Bianca Williams received degrees in
sport and exercise science.

“Our team competes both on the court and in the classroom to the best of their ability,” said head coach Joan
Bonvicini. “Our goal is to be both a top 25 team on the
court and in the classroom, and we are on our way to
achieving both.”

THE ROAD TO DIVISION ONE
On May 10, 2007, the Board of Trustees of Seattle University approved the recommendation of the Athletic Alignment Task Force to
begin the process of reclassifying to NCAA Division I status. With the
2011-12 school year as the final year of the reclassification process,
Seattle U officially finished the reclassification process and earned full
NCAA Division I status at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.
In 2011-12, the Redhawks created some memorable moments in their
final year of NCAA Division I reclassification.
The women’s basketball team reached the postseason in the Women’s
Basketball Invitational and notched the first Division I postseason wins
for the program since reclassifying back to Division I. The team also
earned a 20-win season, the first in Coach Bonvicini’s tenure at Seattle U, and the start of a great legacy of Seattle U women’s basketball.
Women’s soccer head coach Julie Woodward, the dean of coaches and
winningest women’s soccer coahc at Seattle U, recorded her 200th
career win as the team defeated San Diego State University, 3-1, on
Sept. 18, 2011.
Women’s golfer Caitlin McCleary became the first Seattle U golfer to
win a tournament since 1980, completing the year with three total
tournament wins and a runner-up finish at the WCC championships.
Seattle U also added their 20th sport at the end of 2012, elevating
women’s crew to varsity status and hiring former Olympian Portia McGee as head coach of the new program.
These highlights among many others made 2011-12 a year to remember. As Seattle U reached full NCAA Division I status and entered the
Western Athletic Conference in 2012-13, it is certainly an incREDible
time to be a Redhawk.

DR. BILL HOGAN
DR. WILLIAM HOGAN
Director of Athletics
Entering his seventh year as the Director of Athletics at Seattle University, William (Bill) Hogan has already made a
significant impact not only on the athletics program, but within the university as a whole. Thanks to his leadership,
the department has stabilized and grown over the past six years, and he’s overseen some of the most successful
years in school history, both athletically and academically. Most importantly, he spearheaded the move by the University to return to Division I status, including finding a conference home for all of Seattle U’s sports. Starting July
1, 2012, 17 of the school’s 20 sports will compete as part of the Western Athletic Conference, while men’s soccer
and men’s swimming will continue to participate in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, and women’s rowing
will compete as an independent, while actively looking for a conference home.
In 2011-12, Seattle U athletics witnessed some of the greatest moments in recent history, from women’s basketball earning their first Division I postseason wins and finishing with a 20-win season, to track-and-field’s Erik Barkhaus winning his first conference title, the 10,000m men’s title at the Great West Conference Outdoor Championships. Women’s soccer head coach Julie Woodward earned
her 200th career win, and the team took down then-No. 8 Portland, the highest ranked victory for a Seattle U team since reclassifying back to
Division I. Women’s golfer Caitlin McCleary also won three tournament championships and men’s golf won the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Challenge.
Overall, it was a successful final year of Division I reclassification for Seattle U, before they join the Western Athletic Conference and are fully
certified with Division I status.
The 2010-11 season got off to a great start, as the women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams posted winning records. The men’s basketball team earned its second straight victory over Oregon State, plus went on the road and picked up a victory at ACC school Virginia. The men’s
swim team earned four individual titles at the MPSF Championships, while the track and field squad collected two indoor titles and one outdoor
championship within the Great West Conference. The baseball team doubled its win total from the previous season, knocking off nationally-ranked
Oregon State, crosstown rival Washington, and Super Regional participant Dallas Baptist, among others.
The 2009-10 campaign saw the full-time return of Seattle U basketball to KeyArena, as the men’s basketball team used a 10-3 home record to
propel itself to a 17-14 record, the first time a school playing a full Division I schedule in its first year as a Division I counter would post a winning
record. He helped welcome Elgin Baylor back to Seattle as the court was named in the legend’s honor before the home opener against Fresno
State. Men’s soccer participated in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while softball was welcomed into the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. The men’s and women’s swim teams enjoyed their best-ever results at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships. Finally, the
baseball program played its first season of intercollegiate ball in 24 years, picking up a victory over Creighton at historic Rosenblatt Stadium as
well as wins at Oregon and at Portland.
In 2008-09, the Seattle University athletic department began the transition process with no fear. The men’s basketball team posted its best
record in 45 years, the women’s basketball team won 20 games for the first time in 16 seasons, and the men’s and women’s soccer teams also
posted winning records against Division I opponents. Seattle U men’s hoops returned to the Seattle Center for the first time in 29 years, as almost
5,000 people came out on New Year’s Day to watch the Redhawks defeat Loyola Marymount. Five Seattle U teams (men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, volleyball, softball) won in-season tournaments featuring Division I schools, and Hogan oversaw the introduction of four new
sports - men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis.
During the 2007-08 academic year, Hogan watched on as both the women’s and men’s soccer, and softball teams went on to compete in the
NCAA Tournament. The softball team set a new school record for wins (38) and went on to win the GNAC championship. Men’s swimming finished
with their best showing at the Division II level with an eighth place finish, and crowned an individual National Champion (Jakob Jiracek) in the
200m Breaststroke. Seattle University placed 8 different athletes on the first team All-Academic All-District teams, and Ashley Porter and Chris
Coley were the first SU student-athletes to be named All-Academic All-Americans for two consecutive years.
In his first year, Hogan witnessed the women’s soccer, men’s soccer, and men’s basketball teams winning GNAC titles and advancing to their respective NCAA Tournaments. The men’s soccer team won the Far West Region and advanced to the Elite Eight, while the men’s basketball squad
won its first round game. The softball and men’s swimming teams also reached their best postseason result, with the softball team advancing to
the West Regional title game and the men’s swim team finishing ninth at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Academically, the department won the GNAC Academic All-Sports title, with two SU student-athletes, Ana Gutierrez and Adam Jensen, earning GNAC Scholar-Athlete
of the Year honors. Gutierrez and Jensen were two of five SU student-athletes to receive Academic All-America recognition.
Hogan led the University of San Francisco athletics department from 1991 to 2006. He oversaw the development of athletics facilities and initiated scholarship- and revenue-generating programs to strengthen athletic programs at USF. Hogan was named Regional Athletic Director of the
Year by the National Association of College Athletic Directors for 2000-2001. In addition to his responsibilities as athletics director, Hogan also
served as part-time faculty member in USF’s business administration and graduate sports management programs.
Prior to his role at USF, Hogan was with his alma mater Saint Joseph’s College in Indiana, serving as both athletics director and head men’s basketball coach. He was also a tenured associate professor at Saint Joseph’s and voted Professor of the Year by students.
Hogan holds a master’s in Business Education and a doctorate in Educational Administration from Bowling Green State University.
