On the Cover:
The Pickens-Salley House was originally constructed in 1829
in Edgefield by Francis W. Pickens, who was minister to Russia
and governor of South Carolina from 1860-1862. In its earlier
days, the Pickens-Salley House was known as Edgewood. The
home was also owned by the Salley family, and Mrs. Eulalie
Salley lived in the home until her death in 1975. The house was
generously donated to the University of South Carolina Aiken in
1986 by developer Ronald B. Bolton. It is known for its Federal
splendor, and is on the 2003 Aiken County Historic Society list.
Through this issue of the Honor Roll of Donors, the Aiken
Partnership of the University of South Carolina Educational
Foundation reports the names of alumni, parents and friends
who have generously contributed to the Partnership from
July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. We are proud of this year’s
listing of donors, and have made every effort to ensure
complete and accurate reporting. If an error was made, we

A Difference
The University of South Carolina Aiken apperciates
the generous support of alumni, faculty, staff, and
community friends at all levels of giving. The various
giving societies are based on your total annual
giving to the University. For a donation of $500 or
more, you are considered a Very Important Partner
(VIP) of the University and will be a special guest
at selected campus events, revieve information
and invitations to additional gatherings including
the WateringHole at home basketball games, have
library check out privileges, and be eligible to
join the Wellness Center and the Natatorumn for

D
uring this holiday season, I extend my personal
thanks to the generous donors and friends who
have a direct impact on the University of South Carolina Aiken.
We did it! This year the University culminated its first
ever comprehensive campaign! Because of your generosity,
we were able to raise $23,541,096 through the capital
campaign. These gifts were allocated to newly endowed
student scholarships, endowed professorships, athletic
support, exciting new initiatives, and enhanced academic and
student support programs. I want to thank all of the campaign
leadership and volunteers who made this campaign possible.
It’s amazing to see how far we have come, and to understand
what can be accomplished when we set the bar high!
I want to send a special thanks to our faculty and staff
community for their extraordinary support of our Family
Fund! Year after year the campus touts a participation rate of
90% or more. This benchmark is unique to the Aiken Pacers,
and this generosity continues to be a point of pride for our
university.
As you celebrate this holiday season, please know how
grateful I am to everyone who has made giving to USC
Aiken a priority. Your gifts are making a difference in the
lives of our students and will continue to benefit the next

“Don’t you know that the things of this world are only loaned to you for a little while?”
- Eulalie Salley
A
young girl named Sandy Etherington came
straight from college and traveled from New Jersey to
South Carolina, bringing with her a love of horses and
her talent as an artist. She settled in Aiken where a
college friend found her a job galloping horses and
an apartment in a beautiful antebellum house. This
house belonged to Eulalie Salley and Sandy remembers
seeing a very stately Eulalie standing in a long coat
in front of the house when she first drove up. Sandy
rented an apartment in what is now called the PickensSalley House located on the grounds of USC Aiken. A
few years later, Sandy met Bill Tucker, then a student
at the USC law school. Afterwards, Bill joined the law
firm of Henderson and Salley. Attorney Julian Salley was
Eulalie’s son and served as a mentor to Bill. One year
later, Sandy and Bill married. Although both Eulalie and
her son Julian have passed, their memory is still alive
with both Bill and Sandy Tucker.
The Pickens-Salley House holds memories as well
for Sara Salley Wood, Julian’s daughter, as it was her
Grandmother’s house. She remembers her father
coming to Eulalie’s house every Thursday for lunch.
She remembers festive Christmas celebrations in these
same rooms. The ornate and beautiful oak desk in the
entrance of the Pickens-Salley House belonged to Eulalie
and people still remember it being in Eulalie’s downtown
real estate office. Sara’s wedding took place in Eulalie’s
beautiful garden beside this stately home.

Fond memories and a connection with the past are
what brought Sara, Sandy and Bill to sponsor gardens
on the grounds of the house in memory of Eulalie and
her son Julian. Sandy and Bill have dedicated the
garden at the front circle of the house to Julian Salley
while Sara and family have honored Eulalie by naming
Eulalie’s Garden beside the house. As we watch the
plants in this garden grow, it will be a beautiful spot for
parties and weddings.
A quote of Eulalie’s is engraved around the edge of
the garden, “Don’t you know that the things of this
world are only loaned to you for a little while?” Sara,
Sandy and Bill know the value of the memories that
they have from this house and grounds. Speaking for
all three of them, Bill says, “We all are so pleased that
there is a four-year university in Aiken that enhances
our community. The rich heritage of the Pickens-Salley
House offers a contrast to the otherwise modern
campus that began in the 1970s. Along the lines of
what Mrs. Salley said, we know that things are only
loaned to us for a little while and we want to be good
stewards of what we’ve been left. To underwrite or
sponsor some of the improvements here is something
we are happy to do. Our contributions accomplish this
in addition to honoring these special people who had
significant roles in our lives at multiple stages.”
Women in Leadership
A
Ask Liz Stewart her goal in life, and she would attest
that one of the main ones is building the next generation
of women leaders and entrepreneurs. She helps young
women be the best they can be, and encourages them
with their professions, families, schools, churches and
communities.
of Aiken Planning Commission; is the past chair of the
United Way of Aiken County board; chair for the Public
Education Partners (P.E.P.) board. She also serves as
past chair for the Savannah River Cancer Foundation,
and chair-elect of the Savannah River Heritage
Foundation.
Liz, who holds undergraduate degrees in French, Spanish
and education; a master’s degree in psychology, a Ph.D.
in economics and a law degree, is always setting new
goals for herself. One of those goals was to establish a
scholarship at the University of South Carolina Aiken. Liz
has started the “Stewart Entrepreneurship Center Fund”
which was originally established through a leadership
Legacy Society gift, (a planned gift established at USC
Aiken through an estate intent) and over the past few years,
she has added annually to this fund to ensure its current
commitment to young leaders on campus.
There is so much that Liz does in addition to her
financial commitment to USC Aiken. She has been a
volunteer for alumni, advancement, student life, the
School of Business, and so many other departments on
campus. Thank you, Liz, for all that you do for USC Aiken!

Liz shattered the “glass ceiling” before the phrase was
coined—she is a trailblazer and is not afraid to share her
convictions. She founded Stewart and Associates Inc. in
1984 to provide consulting services for both private and
public companies who want to maximize efficient modes of
operation. She has been very successful with this venture,
but make no mistake, she is just as dedicated with her
volunteerism as she is with her company.
Liz does not shy away from saying “yes,” and is an active
community member. She is the current chair of the City

r. Alfred L. Marston
is an active member of
the Cumberland Village.
This neighbor isn’t
originally from Aiken, but
he’s spent approximately
65 years in Aiken, and
has grown to love the
area. He is especially
fond of higher education
and the intellectual
stimulus USC Aiken offers
the community. This
nonagenarian not only
reads the Aiken Standard,
but he enjoys his daily
New York Times as well.
He is full of wit and
humor, and appreciates
young students who
prosper in their studies
and careers. “He stops
by the university from
time to time to share
articles related to higher
education, just to keep us
on our toes” shares Mary
Driscoll, Vice Chancellor
for Advancement.
He graduated from
Colgate University in
1940, (Summa Cum
Laude) and received
a Ph.D. in Physical
Chemistry from Johns
Hopkins in 1943, where
he studied under Dr.
Richard C. Lord, a pioneer
in infrared radiation. Dr.
Marston went on to be a
senior fellow at Mellon
Institute of Industrial
Research from 19451949.
Dr. Marston came to
Aiken in 1949, and was
a researcher with DuPont
and the Savannah River
Lab, (SRL). He served
SRL for 27 years until
he retired in 1976 to
the mountains of Lake
Toxaway, N.C. Dr. Marston
returned to Aiken in
2009, and has been a of
member of Cumberland
Village since that time.
His love for education
and young people has
been the impetus for
the establishment of
two endowments at
the University of South
Carolina Aiken. In
2014, he established
the Kathleen Marston
Endowed Scholarship in
Nursing, in honor and
memory of his lovely
wife. And most recently
Dr. Marston started an
endowed scholarship for
chemistry students. As
Al states, “USC Aiken
has a very strong STEM
program, and I’m glad to
support young nursing
and chemistry students.
It’s a good feeling
knowing that I am helping
the next generation of
scientists.”

Endowed Funds: A Way to Give
Frequently Asked Questions
How often are individual endowed funds credited with
earnings?
Earnings or losses are allocated to individual funds each
quarter.
How much does it take to create an endowed scholarship or
program fund at the University of South Carolina Aiken?
$10,000 is the minimum endowed fund level at USC Aiken.
Do I have to give all the money at one time?
No. You actually have five years to pay the $10,000. We can
even send you pledge reminders if you would like.
Can I add to my endowed fund?
Yes. Additional gifts, investments, and earnings may be made
at any time allowing the funds to grow at a faster rate.
Can I create an endowed fund but make it unrestricted?
Yes, unrestricted gifts are important to the University. As
USC Aiken’s needs change unrestricted funds allow the
flexibility necessary to meet those needs.
What is an endowed fund?
It is a gift of at least $10,000, funded by cash, stock or
a variety of other assets that can be designated for a
scholarship or program of your choice, as long as it is
consistent with University policy and state and federal laws.
Once a gift is accepted, the conditions of the gift are followed
in perpetuity.
Why are endowed funds so important?
They provide an income stream that exists into perpetuitythe larger the endowed fund, the larger the income stream.
How does an endowed fund work?
We take the cash, or principal, that you donate as an
“endowed fund” and place that in USC Aiken’s Endowment
portfolio. The principal earns interest, which is added to the
fund, and fluctuates with the market. Although the portfolio
is well diversified, some investments might occasionally lose
value. Only earnings on the principal are spent. When there
are earnings in excess of the amount allocated for spending,
they are accumulated as a reserve for market fluctuations.
Can I create an endowed fund through an estate plan?
Absolutely. It is, actually, very simple. First, you choose
what kind of endowed fund you prefer, either restricted,
or unrestricted, and whether you want your gift to be for a
scholarship, a specific program or department. Then you
would work with the endowment office to establish the proper
paper work, designating how you wish to fund your gift upon
your death. There are several easy ways to do this: you can
change your beneficiary designation on a retirement plan
such as a 401(K), or an insurance policy, or you can name us
in your will or through a trust document. In each case you can
designate a specific dollar amount or percentage ($10,000
or more) that will go towards your endowed fund. It is a great
legacy to leave for future generations.

to your wishes.
