Thundering News Thunderbird District June 12, 2014 A Scout is Kind All of us are still in shock following the horrific day at Reynolds High School. While I don’t have a student of my own at this school, I still regard all of the youth in the Thunderbird District as “my kids.” Key Priorities for next 60 days. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. In the age of Facebook and the 24 hour media cycle it is tempting to look for a place to assign blame rather than look for solutions when something unimaginable happens. We may feel a need to say something online that we would never say to someone in person. As Scouts we must maintain a higher standard. The sixth point of the Scout Law states that a Scout is kind. The Fundamentals of Training Course for Trainers June 21st at Kinton Grange in Beaverton. This is the first part of the three-part train-the-trainer continuum (T3, or T-Cubed) in the Boy Scouts of America. The course introduces teaching techniques and skills to new Scout trainers but is also designed to help all Scouters, regardless of their experience, present effective training. Intended for both youth and adult trainers, the course will help those who might have trained for other organizations learn the BSA's training techniques, and it will help freshen up the skills of current BSA trainers. Also, How to put Pizzazz in Training Course will be offered. It is a course developed by our Council Commissioner Dolly Olsen. Trainers will learn best practices in how to make their BSA training courses exciting, interesting and of greater value to the participants. Register at cpcbsa.org/register Changes coming to the Cub Scout program in 2015 Beginning with the 2015/2016 program year the Academics & Sports Program will go away, and with it the belt loops and pins which support that optional part of the Cub Scout program. The volunteer task force, pursuing its objective to simplify advancement in Cub Scouts, recommended that the activities of the most popular belt loops be BUILT INTO the core activities of Cub Scout advancement. You can see info on the new program at scouting.org/ programupdates, it is built around a series of adventures. Each adventure is roughly three den meetings worth of content, themed but multidisciplinary (touching on multiple program objectives –character, citizenship, etc). To earn ones badge of rank a boy must complete seven adventures (mix of defined and elective). The progress recognition device for Tiger – Bear is an “adventure loop” or “adventure pin” for Webelos/Arrow of Light. Each rank has a number of electives to support a boy’s further involvement and year-round programs. These also are supported by adventure loops/ pins. The result is that each of the ranks is structured and recognized in the same manner (versus the current differences by rank). The task force feels strongly that this will make the den leader more effective at quality program delivery if he/she is not having to relearn program structure with each rank.
