2013 CHICAGO BLUES FESTIVAL &
WCBS STREET STAGE!
We are proud to host the 2013 WCBS Street Stage & Booth (in the
non-profit Blues Village on North Columbus) at the Chicago Blues
Festival. This is our fourth year and we are excited to provide some
fantastic Blues music and FUN to festival-goers.
Our schedule runs from 11am-7pm every day of the festival. Our musicians are all donating their performances so we ask that you buy one
of their CD’s to show support.
For the second year, we’ll be hosting the first round of
the Chicago Blues Challenge (CBC) on our stage from 1-4pm.
The WCBS would like to thank our members & supporters for financing the Street Stage! This is why your new and renewing membership
in the WCBS is essential to helping us organize the stage—part of our
mission as a 501 C 3 Public Charity.
We’ll have our bubble machines churning! Party beads galore and lots

& most affable harmonica players that you’ll find on this blues planet. Expect

11:00am – 11:45am - Jacob Schulz Band w/ Toronzo Cannon. Jacob
returns to the Chicago Blues Festival after appearing on the fest’s Front Porch
stage in the past…a young, sultry “swooner with soul”. A still rising star with
blue skies ahead- with special guest Toronzo Cannon.
Noon – 1:00 pm - Fernando Jones & Blues Kids of America are regular performers on the Street Stage, with a different group of youthful performers again this year. Fernando will play a few songs and the talent of this year’s
kids will surely again captivate the crowd.
1:15 pm – 2:15 pm - Sam Lay, Bob Riedy & Bob Corritore’s band once
again grace the Street Stage. One of the all-time greats, Sam is always a huge
draw, whether he’s playing guitar or drums, and the two Bob’s along w/ Jon
Hiller bring a huge following of their international fan-base.
2:30 pm – 3:25 pm - Matthew Curry & the Fury are just that…a young
Fury of Fire, sure to catch your attention from the moment they hit the stage.
One of the most promising young guitarists in Illinois, if not the country, Matthew’s hitting his prime early. See him before future crowds get too big to
fight off!
3:40 pm – 5:10 pm - Harry “the Harp” Garner again hosts this
year’s Harmonica Blowout. A rousing success last year, Harry and a
“Baker’s Dozen”, or so, of the best local harp players will blow onto the Windy
City stage. Many special and surprise harpists are expected, and we’ve expanded the timeslot this year to capitalize on the wealth of harp players that
populate the Chicagoland scene. A rapid-fire showcase sure to make instant
memories!
5:25 pm – 6:20 pm - Shake ‘Em on Down is a fairly new formation of
great musicians. Joel Paterson and Rick Sherry are joined by Beau Sample
and drummer Alex Hall- all true and respected professionals on the local
blues & rockabilly circuit. You’ll be hard pressed to experience a more solid &
entertaining show!
6:30 – 7:30 pm - Michael Frank & Michael Packer Duo represent twothirds of the David “Honeyboy” Edwards Trio. Earwig’s Michael Frank has
many years under his blues belt as harp sideman & manager to Honeyboy,

performed so well on our stage last year that we just couldn’t say no! They’re
a blend of hill country and country blues on the upbeat, unique to the Chicago
area, and their stock is rising.
12:15 pm – 3:30 pm - The Annual “Chicago Blues Challenge” is one
of the Windy City Blues Society’s claim to fame, and this is Round 1 of this
year’s Band competition to see who will go to Memphis in 2014 to represent
Chicago. Five bands compete to see who will appear in the finals later in the
year, and there’s always some great surprises and close voting when all is said
and done. Come check out many of the best rising and under-the-radar

WCBS Chicago Blues Challenge 2013
You are invited to participate in the 2013 Chicago Blues Challenge (CBC), a
musical competition for Chicago area blues musicians. The winner of this
competition will represent the Windy City Blues
Society in Memphis at the 2014 International
Blues Challenge (IBC).
There are three divisions for competition:

• Youth Showcase
WCBS commits to supporting the musicians by

John Primer…The Real Deal.

The Windy City blues blew into Dodgeville, WI last summer..…that’s right, Dodgeville, WI.
I caught up with John Primer at the Dodgeville, WI.
Bluesfest in July. Ironically, we sat down to talk with a
church on one side and a police station on the other. He
reminisced about his childhood growing up in Camden,
Mississippi and literally dreaming of someday playing
with his biggest idol, Muddy Waters. Even before
Muddy, he was heavily influenced by Jimmy Reed.
As a youth he would jam with other kids in the basement
with the guitars wired through the TV speakers since
they didn’t have amplifiers. He said that it wasn’t until he
was in the band The Maintainers that his blues skills as a
guitarist were actually refined. He learned to play slide
guitar from Muddy, but he was told by the great not to so
much imitate him, but to develop his own style. He
played in Muddy Waters
band for 2-1/2 years until his death in 1983.
John created his own production company, Blues House
Productions. By doing so, the company will house all of
his music, giving him a place to catalog his creations
while teaching, recording, producing, publishing and
promoting new musicians, and at the same time keeping
the blues alive for blues musicians and the next generation.
He feels that he’s teaching the youth of today the blues
every time he steps on stage, not necessarily with his
style, but just playing the blues in general. He says that
it’s his goal and somewhat responsibility to teach the
blues so it never dies out.
He wanted to get back to the basics with the album, being mostly acoustic, with just minimal electric guitar
thrown in along with the slide.
Fresh off from touring Europe, I asked John how different the audiences are from their American counterparts.
He said “they love the blues also and really appreciate
when the blues come over from the states. But mostly,
they you like a king”.
What’s left for the Grammy Nominated blues performer?
“I still want to win a Grammy” he says.
Rest assured Mr. Primer, Muddy is looking down on you
with a big ole smile on his face saying
“Whoaaa yeah”!
