NEW LIBRARY MANAGER
We are thrilled to announce the promotion of Ms Devi Tharumalingam to
the position of Library Manager. Devi joined the Club five years ago as a
Library Executive. In assuming her new duties as Library Manager, Devi will
oversee the running of the Library for books and DVDs, in addition to being

Regular patrons of the Library have commented on Devi’s professionalism

A FOND FAREWELL TO A DEAR COLLEAGUE
Staff of the Club bid a fond farewell to Alan Choo from the Hot
Kitchen. Alan was working with us for eight years, and has been
described by his team mates in the kitchen as diligent, helpful,
and a loyal and trustworthy friend. Executive Chef Louis Tay
is particularly fond of him, and so are colleagues from other
departments. We wish Alan all the best in his career, and thank
him for his service to the Club.
BEYOND LIMITATIONS LIMITATIONS: TAKING PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Tanglin Team was enthralled by an inspirational talk by motivational speaker, Paralypian athelete, and
acclaimed artist, Gregory Burns. During the talk at the Theatrette, he urged staff to always stay positive, and
to take steps beyond their comfort zones to achieve success. Alan, our Senior Sports and Recreation Executive,
who used to be a national swimmer for Malaysia, was almost in tears when he saw a video clip on how Gregory
persevered to compete in the Paralympics and the Ironman race, despite his handicap. Other staff thanked him for
sharing his experiences and wisdom with them. The talk ended with a group ‘selfie’ of some of the staff with the
famous personality.

The Chenin Blanc stands out with its pale straw

natural acidity, and is best paired with mildly

ABOUT THE BOOK:
After Suharto gained power in Indonesia in the mid-1960s, he remained
the country’s president for more than three decades, helped by the
powerful military, hefty foreign aid, and support from a coterie of
cronies. A pivotal business backer for his New Order government was
Liem Sioe Liong, a migrant from China, who arrived in Java in 1938. A
combination of the Suharto connection, serendipity, and personal charm
propelled him to become the wealthiest tycoon in Southeast Asia. This
is the story of how Liem built the Salim Group, a conglomerate that in
its heyday controlled Indonesia’s largest non-state bank, the country’s
dominant cement producer and flour mill, as well as the world’s biggest
maker of instant noodles.
The book features exclusive input from Liem, who died in 2012, and his youngest son, Anthony Salim.
It traces the founder’s life and the group’s symbiosis with Suharto, his generals and family. After the
tumultuous 1997–98 Asian financial crisis sparked Suharto’s fall and a backlash against the strongman’s
cronies, Anthony staved off the crushing of the debt-laden group. Told in a journalistic style, the story
of the Salim Group provides insights into Suharto’s New Order. For business executives, students, and
anyone with an interest in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, the volume makes a valuable contribution
towards understanding the country’s modern history.

Seven Members of the Gourmet Section went to the longawaited Portuguese dinner on 12 February. Members at the
dinner had a very enjoyable time savouring the dishes that
were marinated with a variety of herbs and spices. Being
a nation with the highest consumption of seafood from
Europe, codfish are not to be missed in Portuguese dishes.
It is said that there are more than 365 ways of preparing
cod, one for every day of the year. I am sure Members will
be looking into exploring different ways of appreciating cod
in their own gourmet experiences.
Our menu for the night was:

EXCITEMENT OVER YU SHENG
As the Horse loped into the distance, and the Goat did a
skittish entrance, the Balut Section decided to do dinner
and toss the assorted vegetables, fish and colourful bits
of gelatin to usher in the new Lunar New Year. Dinner
was, as usual, full of good cheer, but the tossing of the
Yu Sheng was extremely loud, extremely messy and
extremely fun!
The excitement over with, tables were occupied and we
got on with the sedate games. Grace Goh played quietly
till Game 5, and then told all comers “beat this” with a
game score of 135 points. Needless to say, no chance
whatsoever! Fatema Sadiq, meanwhile, collected 610
points along the way and very steadily kept to the front,
stayed in front, and beamed when she came out the
winner of the evening.
The Balut Section would like to thank the F&B staff for
helping us make a mess, and encouraging us to give
voice in at least three dialects (Hokkien, Cantonese and
Rabble). We did appreciate the effort!

CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVITIES
Hello everybody! It’s Spring Time and the Chinese New
Year festivities must have kept everyone busy! Hope that
the Lunar New Year has started out well for one and all!
The John Wilks Trophy competition was kicked off end
of February and we will have the results for you by next
month.
Our monthly section night was moved a week back to
coincide with our Chinese New Year “Loh Hei”. This was
a well attended event with the section members getting
on with some action both at the billiards table and the
“Loh Hei” table!
It was an exciting evening with Mr. Davin Liok just
barely beating Mr. KK Chong for the most number of
wins! Congratulations Davin! For the highest break,
Dr. Ng Boon Keng managed some really good potting
techniques that took him to the top! Congratulations Dr
Ng.
For our upcoming events and competitions, please do
refer to the S&R Department as many of our events and
competitions are open to non-section members.
We hope everyone has a prosperous and healthy year
ahead!

DARTS SECTION
It was that time of year again, when we all gathered for
the traditional Lo Hei to usher in the Lunar Year of the
Goat. The evening began with the prosperity yu sheng,
tossing the shreds of vegetable goodness high up to the
heavens with chopsticks, chanting words of good luck
and longevity for all.
This was followed by delicious Chinese cuisine, of
steamed sea bass, eight-treasure herbal chicken, the
traditional egg noodles for longevity, desserts of eighttreasure red dates, and sesame balls.
Highlights for the evening of fun and games included
Mickey Mouse, High Score and Bulls Eye. As Bulls Eye
was the most challenging game, it was thought that not
many could achieve this difficult feat. However, to our
surprise, there were many winners. Bulls Eye winners
were as follows:
Ben Oh, the father-and-son team Khor Buck Chye and
Jen Hock, MC Cheong, and Nancy Lum.
Overall, with all the treasures in the food, skill and good
luck, this should prove to be a prosperous year for all.
The evening ended on a high note of fruitful enjoyment.

CHINESE NEW YEAR BALL
“Fantastic” was how many had summed up the Chinese
New Year Ball held on 28 February in the Churchill Room.
With a fully booked attendance of 137 Members and
guests, the Chinese New Year Ball was a great success
and to many, it was the best dance event they have
attended at The Tanglin Club.
Dance Ensemble Singapore did not disappoint with their
seven dancers, performing three shows to much acclaim
from the audience, and it was easy to understand why
the company is asked to perform annually for television.
The dance company was also praised by the Prime
Minister in his National Day Rally Speech. The opening
show, Festivity, was the show which they performed on
television on Chinese New Year`s Eve.
The programme went like clockwork. Assistant Restaurant
Manager, Eddie Tan, led the proceedings for the lo hei.
The special six-piece band, Locomotion, played the
right songs for the occasion, and there were so many
participants decked in their finest Chinese or Oriental
wear that the judges hard a hard time in deciding the
winners, and finally picked seven winners, instead of the
usual two!
The chefs and staff at the Churchill Room, led by Senior
Restaurant Manager, Adnan, as usual, did a great job
with the food, service and logistics. S&R Co-ordinator,
Uma, provided the administrative support.

It provides good exercise. As it is played in the open,

The Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) invited us for

Drama • PG • 260min
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Starring: Kenneth Branagh, Julie Christie and Derek Jacobi
The classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy is updated by director Baz
Luhrmann, to a post-modern Verona Beach, where swords are merely a
brand of gun, and bored youths are easily spurred toward violence.
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, returns home to find his father murdered and
his mother marrying the murderer, his uncle. Meanwhile, war is brewing.

Richard III
Shakespeare in Love
Drama • PG • 116min
Director: Michael Hoffman
Starring: Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, and
Rupert Everett
Drama • PG • 104min
Director: Richard Loncraine
Starring: Ian McKellen, Annette Bening, and
Jim Broadbent
Drama • PG • 123min
Director: John Madden
Starring: Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes,
and Geoffrey Rush
It all begins when Hermia and Lysander flee
deep into the forest to escape Hermia’s father,
Egeus, who wishes Hermia to marry Demetrius.
Demetrius himself bicycles into the woods
to follow his true love Hermia. Demetrius is
soon followed by yet another desperate lover:
Helena, who adores Demetrius, but finds her
affections dreadfully unrequited.
Richard Loncraine takes Shakespeare’s classic
tale of treachery, Richard III, and transplants
it to the 1930s. Ian McKellen is Richard, who,
as the film opens, begins plotting against his
brother Edward, who has just ascended to the
throne after a bloody civil war.
William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is on
a cold streak. Not only is he writing for Philip
Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush), owner of “The Rose,”
a theatre whose doors are about to be closed
by sadistic creditors, but he’s got a nasty case
of writer’s block. Shakespeare hasn’t written a
hit in years.

LION DANCE
22 FEBRUARY
The Club ushered in prosperity, good fortune, and
happiness with a rousing Lion Dance performance that
left everyone, young and old, breathless. It seems the
performances get bigger and better every year, and this
year had the Lions going all out, entertaining the young
children in the audience immensely. The drummers struck
a cadence that reverberated throughout the Club, and all
eyes were glued to the lucky numbers the Lions created.
The Lion Dance troupe went on to ‘bless’ other areas of
the Club, and Members retired to the Churchill Room to
feast on Chinese New Year delicacies and tidbits.
