Nancy Chng’s role as a publisher in Indonesia or email [email protected] ABOUT THE BOOK: After Suharto gained power in Indonesia in the mid-1960s, he remained the country’s president for more than three decades, helped by the powerful military, hefty foreign aid, and support from a coterie of cronies. A pivotal business backer for his New Order government was Liem Sioe Liong, a migrant from China, who arrived in Java in 1938. A combination of the Suharto connection, serendipity, and personal charm propelled him to become the wealthiest tycoon in Southeast Asia. This is the story of how Liem built the Salim Group, a conglomerate that in its heyday controlled Indonesia’s largest non-state bank, the country’s dominant cement producer and flour mill, as well as the world’s biggest maker of instant noodles. The book features exclusive input from Liem, who died in 2012, and his youngest son, Anthony Salim. It traces the founder’s life and the group’s symbiosis with Suharto, his generals and family. After the tumultuous 1997–98 Asian financial crisis sparked Suharto’s fall and a backlash against the strongman’s cronies, Anthony staved off the crushing of the debt-laden group. Told in a journalistic style, the story of the Salim Group provides insights into Suharto’s New Order. For business executives, students, and anyone with an interest in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, the volume makes a valuable contribution towards understanding the country’s modern history. NEXT STOP: JAPAN Seven Members of the Gourmet Section went to the longawaited Portuguese dinner on 12 February. Members at the dinner had a very enjoyable time savouring the dishes that were marinated with a variety of herbs and spices. Being a nation with the highest consumption of seafood from Europe, codfish are not to be missed in Portuguese dishes. It is said that there are more than 365 ways of preparing cod, one for every day of the year. I am sure Members will be looking into exploring different ways of appreciating cod in their own gourmet experiences. Our menu for the night was: Entree: mixed platter consisting of FRITTERS, Portuguese Shrimp Dumplings, Beef Croquettes and Portuguese Chicken Pie; CHORICO EM CHAMA, Chorico flamed in brandy; and SARDINHAS COM SALADA DE PIMRNTOS, Grilled Sardines with Roasted Peppers Main Courses: BACALHAU A BRAZ, Codfish and Hay Fries with Caramelized Onions; and ARROZ DE PATO A FUGIR DO PRATO, Rice with Duck in Mint and Wine On a last note, 14 of us will be leaving for Shikoku, Japan, on 3 April. Dinner was, as usual, full of good cheer, but the tossing of the Yu Sheng was extremely loud, extremely messy and extremely fun! The excitement over with, tables were occupied and we got on with the sedate games. Grace Goh played quietly till Game 5, and then told all comers “beat this” with a game score of 135 points. Needless to say, no chance whatsoever! Fatema Sadiq, meanwhile, collected 610 points along the way and very steadily kept to the front, stayed in front, and beamed when she came out the winner of the evening. The Balut Section would like to thank the F&B staff for helping us make a mess, and encouraging us to give voice in at least three dialects (Hokkien, Cantonese and Rabble). We did appreciate the effort! Vikram Raman Balut Section Committee 36 Billiards | Sports & Recreation CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVITIES Hello everybody! It’s Spring Time and the Chinese New Year festivities must have kept everyone busy! Hope that the Lunar New Year has started out well for one and all! The John Wilks Trophy competition was kicked off end of February and we will have the results for you by next month. Our monthly section night was moved a week back to coincide with our Chinese New Year “Loh Hei”. This was a well attended event with the section members getting on with some action both at the billiards table and the “Loh Hei” table! It was an exciting evening with Mr. Davin Liok just barely beating Mr. KK Chong for the most number of wins! Congratulations Davin! For the highest break, Dr. Ng Boon Keng managed some really good potting techniques that took him to the top! Congratulations Dr Ng. The evening began with the prosperity yu sheng, tossing the shreds of vegetable goodness high up to the heavens with chopsticks, chanting words of good luck and longevity for all. This was followed by delicious Chinese cuisine, of steamed sea bass, eight-treasure herbal chicken, the traditional egg noodles for longevity, desserts of eighttreasure red dates, and sesame balls. Highlights for the evening of fun and games included Mickey Mouse, High Score and Bulls Eye. As Bulls Eye was the most challenging game, it was thought that not many could achieve this difficult feat. However, to our surprise, there were many winners. Bulls Eye winners were as follows: Ben Oh, the father-and-son team Khor Buck Chye and Jen Hock, MC Cheong, and Nancy Lum. With a fully booked attendance of 137 Members and guests, the Chinese New Year Ball was a great success and to many, it was the best dance event they have attended at The Tanglin Club. Dance Ensemble Singapore did not disappoint with their seven dancers, performing three shows to much acclaim from the audience, and it was easy to understand why the company is asked to perform annually for television. The dance company was also praised by the Prime Minister in his National Day Rally Speech. The opening show, Festivity, was the show which they performed on television on Chinese New Year`s Eve. The programme went like clockwork. Assistant Restaurant Manager, Eddie Tan, led the proceedings for the lo hei. The special six-piece band, Locomotion, played the right songs for the occasion, and there were so many participants decked in their finest Chinese or Oriental wear that the judges hard a hard time in deciding the winners, and finally picked seven winners, instead of the usual two! The chefs and staff at the Churchill Room, led by Senior Restaurant Manager, Adnan, as usual, did a great job with the food, service and logistics. Demetrius himself bicycles into the woods to follow his true love Hermia. Demetrius is soon followed by yet another desperate lover: Helena, who adores Demetrius, but finds her affections dreadfully unrequited.
