RIDE THE BUS TO SCHOOL! The Camas School District will count district transported students during the week of October 1st – 7th, 2010. The number of students riding school buses during this week will give us the State Revenues for transportation. If the Camas School District regularly transports your child, encourage them to ride the bus to school during the week of student ridership. Speaking of Transportation ….. September 8, 2010 Dear Parents and Guardians, Hopefully your child/children had a great first couple of days of school. I have enjoyed starting to get to know the kids. The kids have been very excited to start school. It is good to have the school filled with smiling faces and kids enjoying their day. With the changes in transportation this year, I want to review and clarify the dismissal options for students at Helen Baller. They are as follows: Drive Through Pickup - Similar to the past few years, Helen Baller will be issuing pickup passes for families that use the drop off area a minimum of three times a week. The application forms are available in the school office. You will receive a yellow pickup pass to place in your car window. An adult at the front of the school will dismiss your child/children when you pull up with your pickup pass. Walkers – Students will be excused through the library courtyard in the front of the building. They will be dismissed by Mr. Cleary to walk home. If you live on the east side/back of the school and want your child to be dismissed by the Jack Will Rob Center, you need to let the office and classroom teacher know in writing. We will dismiss the children to the crosswalk next to J.W.R. and the students will be free to walk home. Please talk to your child about your plan for walking home. Bus Riders - Students will be walked to the buses by their classroom teachers. Students will board the buses and be delivered to their designated bus stops. If they are to ride a different bus home they must bring a note indicating the change. Parent Pickup – Parents will park their car and walk into the office to checkout their student/students. Please be patient at the beginning of the year due to the amount of parent pickups we are having. Being consistent and having a routine that you have discussed with your child/ children will help us get them where they need to be. If you have a change in your daily pickup plan, please notify the office no later than 2:45p.m. Lastly, please discuss an alternate plan with your child/children if your pickup plans change. It is always nice to have a backup plan in case your daily schedule changes. We appreciate your support. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call the office at 833-5720 or email me at [email protected]. Thank you, Aaron Parman, Principal 3 Eat Pizza, Support Your School! Helen Baller 2010 – 2011 PTA Fundraising Campaign Welcome to the families that are new to Helen Baller and welcome back to those who are returning for another great school year. Why Fundraising? I know, we all pay our taxes, we vote on levies, we donate our time…isn’t that enough? The Helen Baller PTA helps supplement our school by assisting teachers and staff with non-reimbursed expenses, grounds improvements, enrichment and fun events for our students. This year, look around the school for large paw prints, these will be set out at strategic points to illustrate what PTA donations have helped to fund. Those who are returning are familiar with the “no-selling” policy at Helen Baller, that’s right no magazines, wrapping paper, cookie dough…sorry if you like that stuff. We request a simple one-time donation at the beginning of the school year. In your “Back to School” packets you have received the annual donation form (which many of you have already responded, thank you). This is the only active fundraising that we ask for your participation on. Your gift is tax deductible and recognized by a family paw print placed on the front windows of the school lobby. Throughout the year, there may be other opportunities that we are presented with to help support the school, these are ZERO pressure, zero obligation. Payback books are an example of this. These are coupon books for local businesses that many of our families already frequent. If you or your friends and relatives want one, great. Submit an order and $10 of the $20 cost goes right back to the school. If you don’t want one or don’t want to sell them, send them right back in your child’s backpack. No problem. Other fun activities are planned throughout the year with more details to come. These will be by participation only and hopefully provide your family with a fun outing while simultaneously benefitting our little ones’ school. Be on the lookout in the newsletter, posters around the school and your children’s backpacks for these upcoming events. Thank you for all that you do for Helen Baller Elementary. 6 Box Tops Monthly Drawing Oct 25-27 Design your Pumpkin to look like any character from any book You can paint, paste, build, dress up, anything but carve your pumpkin Prizes for Best student project from each grade level (K-5) as well as best Family project. Kids and staff at Helen Baller quickly discovered that through cooperation, team work, positive attitudes and creativity that their missions WERE possible! They worked as a team to creatively get from one side of the gym to the other without letting their bodies touch the floor. They used their muscles, minds, and fun pieces of equipment to get their whole team to the other side. It was so fun! Grades 3-5 began their state wide fitness testing: One mile run – cardiorespiratory endurance (1/2 mile for 3rd grade) Sit and reach - flexibility Arm Hang – muscular strength Curl Ups – muscular endurance Coming Soon: Next Week: Team Try-outs (grades 2-5) during P.E. October 3-8th Teams may begin (as long as Mrs. Wing can assign teams by then) October 18-22nd : Scooter Town ALL Week (whole school during normal P.E. classes) 8 Greetings- Your Elementary School Counseling Team welcomes back all families for another exciting school year. Throughout the year our team will be providing information in newsletters on a variety of topics. Since the year is fairly new, we thought it would be a good idea to give a brief overview of our role as well as the types of services we can provide for students/families. Elementary School counselors are focused on assisting all students to achieve their personal best academically, socially, and emotionally. We encourage and empower students to realize their potential and to believe in themselves when working towards individual goals. We believe that working closely as a team with administrators, teachers, parents, and students provides the best opportunity for success. Here are some of the ways Elementary School Counselors support students and families: Personal and Social Guidance- Counselors get the opportunity to visit students in the classroom and teach developmentally appropriate guidance lessons. Lessons build off one another and focus on: Empathy skills, Managing your emotions, Friendships, Solving problems, and Safety (Recognizing, Refusing, and Reporting unsafe behavior.) Counseling Services (Individual or Small Group) Small Group counseling provides students with additional learning experiences while enhancing personal growth. Providing students with a forum to express themselves while benefiting from the support of their peers in similar circumstances can be very effective. Small groups are optional and parent consent would be needed for your child to participate. Individual Counseling within the school setting is provided on a short term basis. If there is a need for more intensive services, your school counselor will work with your family to identify and link you to the proper supports. Each situation is looked at on a case by case basis. Individual Planning- Working closely with teachers, counselors are involved in academic and behavioral planning with students and families. All elementary counselors in the district are part of their school’s Building Intervention Team and are key to work with the Positive Behavior Support team and Character Counts program. Consult/Collaborate- Elementary Counselors communicate daily with teachers, administrators, community agencies, and parents. We recognize the diverse needs of our school’s families. Your school counselor can be an excellent resource to link you to supports/resources in the community that you may not have been aware of. These are some of the ways that we work as a team to support students as well as families. We are not long-term therapists but educators with a specific focus on working in the area of emotional wellness. After all, while our students are very busy learning, this is an environment rich with social and emotional experiences. Please don’t hesitate to contact your school counselor if you have any questions or concerns.
