The Gelats Valls Saga The last fortnight has been full of emotion, nostalgia, disbelief and downright fury as the ice-cream stand in Puerto Pollensa, run by the local ice cream makers Gelats Valls, has been under threat. Originally brought to uncertainty last year when its neighbour, Café 1919, contested it, the stand is now under scrutiny once again. The owners of 1919 would clearly like to see the end of the stand that sits right on its doorstep - or take it on themselves. The council are under pressure to close it and put the kiosk, which was built and paid for by the company, and open it for tender. In response, not just Gelats Valls but it seems the whole of Pollensa, the north, and returning fans of Puerto Pollensa, were having none of it. Taking, instead, to social media and the power of petitions to canvass the council and make it clear that Gelats Valls is here to stay. Campaign for Olivia Indeed thousands of people signed the online petition and countless more signed the papers at the company’s various stands, shops and collaborating shops. Gelats Valls argue that there is a 99-year lease, they have requested copies of the agreement “numerous times”, but the council “has never provided this document”. At the time, in the absence of other interested parties, the council awarded the ice cream kiosks in the frontline in Puerto Pollensa and in the square in Pollensa to the founders of Gelats Valls with full and complete justification and legal compliance. Add to this the fact that the company paid the entire cost of construction, installation and connection of the kiosks, it seems their claim is difficult to argue. Gelats Valls filed an administrative appeal against the decision last year. They Five years after the little girl, Olivia Encinas was abducted by her mother, the family still don’t know where she is. Olivia was kidnapped and taken illegally from Spain in 2011. Her father, Alberto Encinas Cuadrado is now criticize the council for, instead of answering their appeal, it has chosen a new approach that seeks the expiration of the authorization granted in the beginning and one that directly involves the eviction of the kiosk in Puerto Pollensa. Finally, the popular support proves that there is no “general interest” to declare the expiration of the concession. Instead the stand is; “part of the cultural and culinary tradition and social essence of Pollensa”. At the holding different fundraising events so he can carry out a new search for his daughter. Last week, a party was held in the new pizzeria Obris of Pollença, and no less than €6,000 was raised. time of print, the online petition had more than 5,000 signatures. The story will rumble on. Meanwhile, on the other side of the kiosk, Grand Cafe 1919 – the main protagonist behind the Gelats Valls saga – has been ordered to reduce its terrace. Last year, the council granted authorization for 58 seats and 20 more this season were requested. The Pollensa Council has already informed them that only may obtain authorization for 42 chairs. Olivia was born in Pollensa in 2008, she is the daughter of Spaniard Alberto Encinas Cuadrado and Hlond Katarzina Agata of Poland. At a court in Inca, the father was given exclusive custody. continued page 3 YOUR FREE LOCAL PUBLICATION • NEWS, SPORT, FEATURES AND MUCH MORE 2 Local News Parking & Police in Can Picafort implementation of joint preventive actions of the town’s police services. Tension between the local police force and their boss, the local council in Santa Margalida, hit a new low over the weekend when police officers fined cars belonging to officers of the Proteccion Civil. The plan is firstly, to unify the criteria for action and coordination in the police activities in Búger and Sa Pobla, using the same protocols in relation to minors. It all came to a head after a triathlon event, before which the trouble really began. The council had refused to pay local police overtime for their help during the race; they in return refused to cooperate. The council called in volunteers from the Proteccion Civil to regulate traffic and assist in the organization. As a thank you, the council invited the 20 volunteers to paella next to the beach. Two of their vehicles were parked on a pedestrian section of Hernán Cortés. On-duty police officers then started to fine the parked cars. The volunteers approached the officers to protest and in a very tense atmosphere, the fines were withdrawn but the police ordered the drivers to remove their cars. This hiccup in relations is just the latest in a history of tension between Deputy Mayor Joan Monjo and the local force, whose leader Pere Alomar has just returned to work after months off. He, he told local press, will be working to fix relations. Sa Pobla & Buger Join Hands The council leaders of Sa Pobla and Buger met in Sa Pobla last week to sign an agreement that aims to improve coordination, information transfer and Secondly, it will enable collaboration and timely transfer of information between the two services in cases of minors who present some kind of problem or social risk. Thirdly, the new collaboration will entail joint activities concerning road education, talks on prevention, or other activities that require joined forces and materials. The new plan does not entail any costs and the agreement will run until the end of the year when it will be renewed. Either side can terminate the agreement with one month’s notice. Vila Cortina, Demolish or Not? A judge has ruled that the businessman Alfonso Cortina cannot return to his villa in Formentor and the decision on whether or not the house is demolished is still pending. The Balearic High Court of Justice (TSJB) considers that the inability to use a holiday home has a less negative effect than the damage caused by an illegal use of illegal housing. This is why the court has just rejected Cortina’s appeal to the ban which was issued due to the lack of authorization certificate. In December 2014, the TSJB cancelled a building permit T A L K ¡Hola! that the City Council of Pollença granted to Alfonso Cortina in 2005 because of the house’s “monumental visual impact.” The judges concluded that, despite being urban land, Formentor must be preserved and that the building limited the visual field and natural beauty of the landscape. The sentence concluded the need to demolish the house “if it is not now legalizable,” prompting Cortina’s to hide the villa under comprehensive vegetation cover. This proposal did not convince the municipal technicians, who not only reported against the project, but also warned the project did not correspond with the license of 2005, it was in fact bigger. The final judgement will be made based on the records whether they house should be demolished or not and to what extent. Anti-Corruption Case of Ex-Mayor Leopoldo de Miguel, the lawyer who filed the complaint to the to anticorruption court against the former mayor Bartomeu Cifre (Tots), will not be able to appear in person in the judicial case. The complaint was for an alleged crime of prevarication by the stoppage of developments in Pollensa (Formentor, Vila and Font, etc.). The judge has decided not allow Leopoldo de Miguel into the private prosecution claiming he cannot be considered injured or offended by the facts judged in the procedure, since it is not his own land in any of the developments that are being investigated. The lawyer said Wednesday it is preparing an appeal against that decision. Meanwhile the former mayor announced to local press that, “it is clear that it was an orchestrated campaign not to allow me to enter the elections.” He criticized the severity of the ethical code that expelled him from the PP. Cala’s Fight to Become a Marine Reserve The Mayor of Pollensa, Miquel Àngel March (Junts), has stepped forward and presented a motion to urge the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment to create a marine reserve in Cala San Vincente. This would cover a total area of 2.8km2, from the tip of Cavall Bernat to Coves Blanques. Neighbours of Cala San Vincente are the driving force behind the proposal and the City Council has analyzed the proposal since last November. Representatives of neighbours gathered at the end of last year with the mayor and the director general of Fisheries Department, Joan Mercant, to analyze the feasibility of the project, however it is the Ministry of Environment which has the final say. The Association of Residents of Cala has a base document that will help to develop the technical proposal that will go to the ministry. They have the means to develop the scientific part, but requires the City Council to develop the technical part. The mayor said last week, “We know it will not be easy, that Madrid is not working to create this type of reserve, nor does it delegate powers to the Autonomous Region to continued on page 3 Lots of news this week, and a lot of justifiably ‘disgruntleds’ getting in touch. We’ve received calls and messages concerning the access issue that has seemingly been missed off the list when work was carried out in Puerto Pollensa. Also, a lot is being said about the upcoming sporting events taking up the roads two weekends in a row. I’m all for promoting Mallorca as a sporting destination but I do feel for one reader who wrote in saying that they avoided an arrival on the 7th because of the Ironman only to find the Mallorca 312 is on the day they moved their holiday to. That’s got to be some bad planning on the authority’s behalf? All details of the closures are on the sports page. Then of course there’s Gelats Valls. Of course it will not be closed... Or could it? Hopefully, we’ll know by the next edition. O F T H E 3 N O R T H Campaign for Olivia continued from front page However, taking advantage of a day visit, the mother kidnapped the little girl on December 31, 2011 and took her to Poland. Seasonal Rentals, Mayors Ready to Cooperate Various mayors from across Mallorca have laid plans to regulate holiday tourist rentals, but while they are aware of the significant income they represent for the population, it seems they are not all willing to take on new responsibilities at any cost. Some, like the mayor of Sóller, Jaume Servera or Pedro Rossello of Manacor, warn of shortages of technical and economic means to take on the new responsibilities when municipalities are already struggling to meet current obligations. One of the issues that most concerns mayors, is to give freedom to the municipalities to decide whether they want new touristic homes sold in his term, in what areas and with what intensity. They can generate significant differences depending on the territorial distribution. This could be of benefit to a few owners and unfairness for the rest. Thus, the mayor of Alcúdia, Antoni Mir, claimed this issue should be agreed within the Federation d’Entitats Locals of the Balearic Islands (FELIB) in which all municipalities have a say. 4 What’s on this fortnight? TOTN – 110mm x 110mm – Colour 28th April N O R T H 5 6 Writing Competition “My Village” Back in February, we wrote about the English Writing Competition in the local high schools. Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa entered a full field of entries and there was a smattering from Alcudia as well. Joanna Greenfield, Charles Nutter and Alice La Plant were the judges and the award ceremony took place on Wednesday 27th. Entries ranged from entertaining to poetic, from positive to negative with boredom a recurrent theme. (There clearly needs to be more places for the teens to go to.) TOTN’s favourite line was from Francisca Torrandell Sastre: “Pollencins are friends in Sant Antoni and enemies in La Patrona… Pollencins grow old and as we grow, the love we have for our village grows old with us…it is my home and it is where I find myself when I get lost.” And the Winner is... Aina Torrandell of IES Pollensa, 4th Year student. On the northern shores of the gorgeous island of Mallorca there’s a precious place where the water is clearer and the sand is whiter. Framed in tall rocks, Cala Sant Vicenç is a paradise playground of pines that give the place its characteristic touch. The best thing about the place anyway, is that you can visit it anytime of the year and you will enjoy it. In summer the clear water of the various shores will be like heaven on earth because of the high temperatures and in winter the quietness of the place plus the sound of the waves breaking in the beach will put your soul at ease. Not far from Cala Sant Vicenç, there is the real village, Pollença. Maybe it is not a paradisiacal place, but it sure is awesome, with its stone streets and magic squares that during the summer fill with people, young and old, and many activities. And in winter it dies down a little and it leaves us with the endearing image of older citizens and families who enjoy our beautiful town. if there is something more sacred than ourselves for the ones who live in this beautiful spot that must be the festivities, underscoring Sant Antoni and la Patrona. Sant Antoni is celebrated on the 17th of January and it lasts the whole day, from morning when we bless out pets with holy water, to midday when we go to Ternelles to get the big tall pine a brave “hero” will climb once evening has come. And once someone has climbed it there is even more party just to celebrate this joyous day. But Pollença is not a haven of peace all year long because But then there is La Patrona, celebrated the 2nd of August to commemorate that our ancestors fought against Dragut and his men and won the battle. But this festivity is more than that, it is a feeling, it is the smile on your face when you see Joan Mas retrieve the Muslim flag even though every year it is the same, it is the feeling of your heart swelling with pride when in the middle of the square you sing Visca Pollença, it is the feeling of brotherhood with your neighbours. And because of that Pollença is so much more than a village, it is a paradise, it is heaven on earth. Lastly, well done to Charles Nutter who raised €1,340 for children in care homes on the island so they could go and buy a book of their choice on St Jordi’s day. The money was raised at the Book Lunch at Sin Embargo and Breakfast at the Art Studio Portals. Well done to everyone involved, especially our pal Charles of English Radio Pollensa. Both the winemaking and care of the vineyard are done by hand and its location between the sea and the mountains is reflected in this very unadulterated style of wine. The wine is aged in French oak, and is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Black Manto. The result is a dark cherry red with an aroma of candied fruit, old leather, wax, mineral and balsamic. The wine is unfiltered but don’t let its hazy appearance bother you, it’s just further evidence of a pure and natural reflection of its vineyard. Enjoy with beef or roast lamb. The most common of this is GUSTAR (to be pleasing to). While in English we’d say, “I like the cat”, (‘I’ being the subject and ‘the cat’ being the object), in Spanish you’d say literally “The cat pleases me”. (‘The cat’ now being the subject and ‘I’ the object.) The key to the verbs in this section is to remember that they nearly always operate in their third person. The thing being discussed has an effect on people: Frogs fascinate me; Noise bothers you etc. 8 The lessons are compiled by Valeria Van Domselaar who is available for private Spanish and Catalan Classes. Contact her on 682 622 898 or by email, [email protected]. To work with these verbs, you use the following recipe: INDIRECT OBJECT + 3rd PERSON (SINGULAR or PLURAL) VERB + NOUN(S) Singular Subject Me gusta el gato No te gusta el libro Le gusta la casa No nos gusta el perro Os gusta la luz Les gusta la revista I like the cat You don’t like the book He likes the house We don’t like the dog You like the light They like the magazine When mentioning the name of a person (or persons), place the name (or pronoun) between the preposition ‘A’ and the indirect pronoun. C Mare Perla 4, Local B Puerto Alcudia T: 971 547 878, M: 607 623 845 12 The Mallorquinista by Charles Nutter Nervous Times With seven games of the current season to play, Real Mallorca are far from safe from relegation – just one point outside the relegation places. After the additions that were made to the squad in the winter transfer window the club has on paper one of the strongest, albeit unbalanced, squads in the Spanish Second Division. This group should be comfortably mid table by now with thoughts turning to next season’s campaign. Nerves have played a huge part and this is borne out by an astonishing statistic – the team have not won in ten separate games where they have taken the lead. They have gone on to draw six and lose four of those games and this can only be attributed to a lack of confidence in their ability to seize the opportunity to put a match beyond the opponent’s reach. If they had only seen out three or four of those games to victories then the players could be looking at summer holiday destinations rather than over their shoulders at the abyss. The home fixture against high-flying Osasuna on 17th April was a case in point. The team played attractive flowing football in the first half and were well worth the lead given to them by in-form striker Ortuño following a corner. They should have been out of sight by half time with crosses from the wingers constantly just out of reach of the strikers. Shortly after the break Kasim was harshly adjudged to have committed a foul in the penalty area and the visitors equalized from the spot. From that moment the mind-set changed, passes were over hit and the players’ anxieties were transmitted to the fans. Head coach Fernando Vazquez must address this situation and ensure the players remain calm and focused on maintaining the club’s position in this league. The imbalance in the squad was summed up by one Spanish newspaper with the comment that Mallorca have six central defenders (when fit) and a “thousand” wingers but only three central midfielders, none of which fit into the creative category. This situation needs to be resolved in the summer months. One of those central defenders young German Tobias played in the opening match of the season and has not been since until he was named on the bench against Osasuna. Vazquez has preferred to play fullbacks and midfield players in defence rather than select Tobias who clearly does not have a future on the island beyond this season. Mallorca’s next game is at home to Alaves this Saturday 30th April with an 8.15pm kick off followed by a visit to Albacete. A couple of wins would ease the pressure and conversely defeats would set the nerves jingling to breaking point. Real Mallorca 1-1 Osasuna A classic game of two halves. The team were comfortable and assured in the first half and after conceding a penalty they literally fell to pieces. The referee attracted a lot of criticism from the home fans but this should not be allowed to deflect attention from the root cause of the problem. Lugo 2-1 Real Mallorca A visit to mid table Lugo was an ideal opportunity for a morale boosting victory but a sorry defeat meant the islanders have gained just one point out of the last nine on offer. Lugo took an early lead and Damia equalized with ten minutes left in the game. A point would have been welcome but calamitous defending in extra time gifted the home side a win, which in truth, they deserved.
