It seems like we are headlong into
sales already and it’s only
November! There are getting to be
quite a few sales in October and
November now.
Marc and I did a lot of traveling
again this month and several of our
trips were hampered by bad
weather. The big blizzard that hit
Colorado really slowed some people
down including us. But in true
Colorado fashion a lot of the snow
melted, at least on the Front Range,
within a day or two.
We decided to do something a
little different this year and made
the trek to Ohio for several sales
including the Mohican Polled
Herefords sale. We also attended the
Stockdale-Grandview sale the same
day and the Sunnyside-Detweiler
sale the following day.

Hereford Breeders, Industry Contributors Recognized by
AHA with Hall of Fame, Merit Honors
Bob Schafer and Upstream Ranch were inducted into the Hereford
Hall of Fame on Oct. 23 at the American Hereford Association
(AHA) Annual Meeting. The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford
breeders who’ve dynamically influenced the direction and
advancement of the Hereford breed.
Also honored were Hereford Hall of Merit inductees, the late
Guy Shull and Michael “Mike” MacNeil. Hall of Merit recipients
aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders, but have in their own ways
greatly influenced the Hereford breed and cattle industry.

2007 Junior
National Hereford
Expo Update
Plans for the 2007 NJHE to be held
in Denver, Colorado July 7-14 at the
National Western Stock Show grounds
are well under way. The event is being
sponsored by the Western States of
Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho,
Montana, Nevada, New Mexico,
Oregon, Utah, Washington and
Wyoming. The theme of the event is A
HEREFORD CELEBRATION and it
is projected that 1500 head of cattle
will be entered in the show.
There are several fund raising flush
donations from outstanding females in
our breed that Hereford Breeders will
want to be aware of.
Being sold in the Nugget Sale in
Reno, Nevada on December 2nd is a
flush of C 212 MS DOM 4013 ET,
compliments of Colyer Herefords,
Bruneau, Idaho and Ernst Herefords,
Windsor, Colorado. All four flush mate
brothers are serving in registered herds
including C Hidalgo ET who sold to
Hidalgo Herefords, Plano, Texas for
$26,500 and “Ben” the $26,000 herd
bull for W4 Ranches, Morgan, Texas.
The flush mate sisters are equally
impressive with 4004 selling for
$8,000 to Terrell Herefords, Sherman,
Texas and two more females are
retained in the Colyer herd.
4013’s pedigree combines some of
the breed’s top performers with sires
such as the $54,000 212M, 9126J, Pure
Gold and Achiever and proven cows
such as the $25,000 8104 and Colyer’s
most efficient cow 6047. 4013’s dam
C MS Pure Gold 2003 is now a lead
donor cow for Hoffman Herefords,
McArthur, California.
Also being sold during the National
Hereford Sale donated by Brumley
Farms, Orovada, Nevada are four
embryos out of the 2005 National
Champion Hereford female, H Truly
Yours 361 and sired by the very
popular /S Mister Mom 7745.
All of the proceeds of these
exceptional offerings go to finance the
2007 Junior National Hereford Expo
and are fully tax deductible! What an
outstanding way to improve your herds
and help out Hereford Youth!

Lake Bronson, MN — Ray and Lillah Johnson have sold the farm and are building a new
home in nearby Lancaster, MN, retiring for good at this time. All the Registered Polled
Herefords have been shipped off to new homes in MN, SD and ND. The entire cow herd,
all the calves and all the herd bulls were included in the final sale of this herd.
The new owners of this highly coveted herd of producing females are as follows:
SCHMIDT HEREFORDS, Pipestone, MN; SPRINGWATER POLLED HEREFORDS, Garretson,
SD and Pipestone, MN; COLIN HOFFMAN HEREFORDS, Leola, SD; and PERMAN &

Included in the transaction were 207 head of cattle including the bred heifers, all bred
cows, the entire 2006 calf crop and five herd bulls. There was one exception, as ONE
BRED HEIFER has been CONSIGNED to the 2006 GOPHER SALE, which will be held
December 9, 2006, in Hutchinson, MN.The other females were dispersed by age groups.
Ray has been on the home farm since 1937, moving there with his folks when he was
just a young lad. Ray and Lillah married in 1953 and have lived there ever since. Ray and
Lillah spent 53 years on the farm, raising a family and their Registered Hereford cattle.
Living in the extreme northwest corner of Minnesota, they needed hardy, tough cattle to
survive the winters and produce a live calf the following spring, thus their choice was
for Hereford cattle. They will tell you that the Herefords have paid their way over the
many years. Ray has always had the foresight to raise sturdy, growthy, productive breeding stock. Over the years a good many young herd bull candidates were purchased from
breeders in nearby Canada as well as from notable USA breeders. The infusion of those
growth genetics has been a telling force in the popularity of this herd.
In the year 2001, Ray and Lillah sold 75 bred cows to Gerald and Colin Hoffman of
Hoffman Herefords, Leola, SD for the express purpose of starting the Polled segment of
Hoffman’s registered herd. Those cows have made a major contribution to the popularity of the Hoffman’s Polled Hereford program. The Hoffman’s success has sparked the
interest of their fellow Hereford breeders to want to be a part in this final dispersal of a
great cow herd.
All who know the Johnsons extend their thanks for raising top notch seedstock and
wish them the very best as
they slow down a little and
now will have more time to
spend with the grandkids
and their families.
The dispersal of this herd
was handled by Art Handel,

appreciate the fact that the ABHA folks do
recognize some of the attributes of our breed
and that they in their own way are spreading
Hereford influence to some extent, I feel their
timing is poor as it affects the real Hereford
and their mission is somewhat misguided. By
way of explanation: The AHA rightly refused
to allow them into the fold. It is impossible
for them to be truly purebred Herefords with
parentage traceable as such. They became
black with the infusion of other breeds. For
years we have been attempting to cause others to recognize that there is nothing superior
about a black hide! At this time Herefords are
on such an upswing as I have not seen in my
nearly 33 years. It is not totally countrywide
but getting close. Just as the red hide is making its great comeback their message is at odds
with this renewed popularity of Hereford genetics. I feel the ad is also misleading because
red baldies have perennially done well (and I
like them), straight Hereford genetics ruled
the range at least through the sixties.
I do not intend to bash the ABHA; they are
part of the proof that Hereford genetics are
increasingly in demand. However, the gene
pool is very small and they simply can not
offer the broad selection that the real Hereford does. Nor can they offer the choice of
generations of linebreeding which is one of
the most powerful tools for producing consistent, peas-in-a-pod calf crops. The real
Hereford has been scientifically proven to offer more heterosis than any other breed can in
a crossbreeding program. The black baldies
known as black Herefords have this heterosis
compromised by the infusion of the genetics
December 2006
from other breeds. For instance, if the black
hide was achieved using Angus genetics, there
is going to be less hybrid vigor if you put a
black baldie bull on an Angus cow herd.
Thomas Green

Editor’s note: Thomas, you raise some very
good points about the strengths of the Hereford breed. I’m glad to see this kind of response. We as breeders need to promote these
aspects more. (See more comments following
next letter.) — Jill
***
I was disappointed to see a full page ad in
your paper for another breed, especially one
whose only claim is that black is better, a
myth we’ve been trying to debunk for years.
No, I’m not going to cancel my subscription
and burn my back issues but I think it was a
poor decision since the AHA has been developing ads promoting Hereford bulls as the
answer for crossing on black cows.
My opinion,
Les Krogstad, MN
Editor’s Note to both Les and Thomas:
Thank you for your notes regarding the Black
Hereford ad. We value reader input and we
also value our advertisers. First of all let me
assure you my blood runs red and white and
always will! I knew the ad would draw fire
and I made the decision to let the ad run.
Marc and Dad concurred with the decision.
We have run all Angus ads, combination
Angus-Hereford and combination Red
Angus-Hereford ads in the past and even one
ad last spring that promoted Horned over
Polled. We did, however, draw the line with
the miniature Herefords. Sorry guys. Just
because the ads were published doesn’t mean
we agree with their message. We state this in
every issue on page 2. Keep in mind ours is
an independent, family-owned publication.
We stay in business from advertising and
subscription revenue. That’s pretty much it.
With that said, our publication certainly will
not be taken over by advertising from other
breeds. We don’t mind running the occasional
ad with other breeds in it and that’s what this
was. We felt that since their breed requires
animals to be at least 62.5% Hereford it
would fit, although I personally didn’t really
care for their headline. Yes, I know it touches
a nerve with some people. Please don’t just
dwell on this one ad. Look past it and see
what positive things we are actively doing
for the Hereford breed and have been doing
for the last 10 years, including encouraging
commercial producers to use Hereford bulls
on black cows. Again, thanks for your
remarks. We continue to promote an open
forum for opinions. — Jill

I was amused to read your concern about
the AHA indifference to the Montana
Hereford tour. In October each year we
display 3 or 4 herd bulls at an ag expo in
southwest Missouri. In 2005, one of our
visitors said he was so surprised by the size
and quality of our Hereford bulls that he was
going to go home and visit with his son about
replacing some of their black bulls with our
Hereford bulls. I didn’t hear from him and
forgot about it until this year’s show when
the same man came by. He said he lost my
card but called the AHA last spring to get my
phone number. He said he told them he was
looking for a veterinarian in the Warrensburg/
Leeton area with Canadian bred Horned
Hereford cattle. Unfortunately, the AHA
informed him there were no Horned Hereford
breeders in that area, and sent him to a couple
of breeders in Kansas where he bought 3
bulls.
While I am happy for the Kansas breeders,
the incompetence of the AHA office doesn’t
sit well, especially since my family has been
breeding Horned Hereford cattle since 1910
and been doing it in this area (65 miles from
AHA Headquarters) since 1966.
Byron, I don’t believe you need to be
concerned about discrimination by AHA staff
against Montana breeders, I feel it is just
incompetence and leadership failure by AHA
senior staff. I think they are too busy trying
to turn our Herefords into a support breed
for Angus to be bothered with us Hereford
breeders.
Imagine my surprise when my neighbor
called at noon last Friday to tell me Jack Ward
had just left after coming by for a herd visit.
It might surprise you also if you knew my
neighbor is an Angus breeder. That night as I
read Craig Huffhines article about devotion
to Herefords, I had to wonder who is devoted
to what.

at her side as a baby, sold as the high
selling female in the Star Lake May 2006
sale to Star Lake Genetic Partner Larsons’

Another added lot claimed the next
high price of $20,000 for 1/2 interest.
STAR JB 533P Lucky Force 389S was
co-owned by Star Lake and Jon & Jaci
Blin. He is just a May calf sired by high

Bright Future and brought $15,100 for
half interest from Andy VanBuskirk of
Red Ridge Cattle Co. and Shephard’s

The nice set of older, big, stout,
breeding age Ranch Ready Bulls in the
Star Lake sale found ready acceptance as
they sold at a rapid and solid pace as fast
as they could go through the ring,
finishing above last year’s average price.
Of these older bulls the majority were
selected by commercial cattlemen, while
4-5 were purchased by purebred
breeders.
The bidding on the 18-month old
Ranch Ready bulls showed particular
strength in the $2,500-$4,000 range. In
addition to the ranchers in attendance,
there was a strong presence from the
internet broadcast through Superior
Livestock, with many of the bulls selling
there.
Volume buyers in the bull sale included
Cole Ranch from Louisiana, King/Morris
from Arkansas and W&J Stevens Farm
from Arkansas.

AHA Hall of Fame, Merit Honors
(continued from page 1)
Bob Schafer
Bob Schafer, Mahnomen, Minn., got his
start in the Hereford business at a young age
on the farm owned and operated by his
mother, uncle and grandparents at Buffalo
Lake, Minn. Little did folks know the
influence Bob would later have on the breed.
After graduating from the University of
Minnesota with a degree in animal husbandry
and working for the agricultural Extension
service, Bob became manager of
Schermerhorn Farms of Mahnomen, Minn.,
in 1956.
Under his management, the operation
became a cooperator in the AHA’s dwarfism
research, and in 1963, was one of the first to
enroll in the new Total Performance Records
(TPR) program.
“Nearly 15,000 head would be
performance tested over the next 40 years and
1,500 head would have ultrasound carcass
data collected,” says Beth Carlson, Minnesota
Hereford Breeders president.
In 1965, John Oxley purchased
Schermerhorn Farms and combined it with
his Oklahoma-based Hereford ranch.
Extensive use of artificial insemination
ensued. The Oklahoma herd was dispersed
in 1976, and the rest of the herd in 2003.
Bob served as manager of Oxley Hereford
Ranch for 48 years. Beth says he was most
astute at purchasing herd bulls, as well as
semen from top sires. The effect of Bob’s
careful genetic selection, she explains, is that
the OXH prefix is found in many of the
breed’s most influential cattle. The list of
famed OXH sires is long, and the OXH
females are reputed for structural soundness,
heavy milk, moderate birth weight, growth
and muscle — generally problem-free cows.
Oxley cattle were sold throughout the U.S.,
as well as in Canada and Australia. Semen
made its way to Canada, Australia, Europe,
Africa and South America. Oxley cattle were
also exhibited various times at regional
shows, state fairs and the National Western
Stock Show (NWSS). Carloads of bulls were
shown for several years at the NWSS.
Bob’s contributions to the breed didn’t stop
at Oxley. “Bob has spent his entire life
contributing to the respect and growth of the
breed through his involvement in local, state
and national organizations, including both
industry and breed organizations,” says Mark
Frederickson, Frederickson Hereford Farm,
Starbuck, Minn.
Among his contributions were many years
served as president of the Minnesota Hereford
Association and on the Red River Valley
Winter Show committee. He also represented
northwest Minnesota on the Minnesota Beef
Council for nine years. During this time Beth
notes that he was a driving force behind the
development of a hamburger and wild rice
beef patty that grew to be very popular.
Oxley Hereford Ranch served as a place
of education and entertainment to young and
old alike through the many field days, tours,
judging team practices and informational
seminars held on the ranch over the years.
As a respected breeder, Bob was often asked
to judge state and county fairs, as well as
Register of Merit shows.
“Bob Schafer is an individual whose
enthusiasm and dedication to the Hereford
breed is undisputed by anyone who knows
him,” Mark says.
Bob, too, is a family man. He and Carol,
his wife of 54 years, raised five children and
now enjoy 12 grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
Upstream Ranch
Alfred Meeks and Sons originated in 1937
in Dalhart, Texas, when Alfred Meeks bought
some heifers from his father, JD Meeks. In
1955 Alfred and his wife, Mildred, and their
son and daughter-in-law, Ferrall and Gloria,
purchased Upstream Ranch near Taylor in the
Sandhills of Nebraska.
Today the ranch is managed by Alfred’s
grandson, Brent, and his wife, Robin, and
owned with Mildred, who still lives on the
ranch. Brent and Robin have two children
— Marshall and Carlee. Alfred succumbed
to cancer in 1991 and Ferrall and Gloria were
killed in a car accident in 1994.
The Upstream herd includes 600 registered
cows. About 500 cows and heifers are AIbred annually and about 50 embryos
transferred.
Upstream Ranch hosted its first production
sale at the ranch in 1978, which has continued
annually on the first Saturday of February.
The ranch’s main focus is the production of
bulls for commercial cattlemen.
“Alfred and Mildred laid a solid foundation
for one of the best ranches in the nation,”
say Ronny and Kay Morgan, Morgan Ranch
Inc., Burwell, Neb. “Alfred knew his
customers and knew how to market his cattle
to them. Everyone was a friend to Alfred and
Mildred and they returned that friendship.
Ferrall and Gloria, the second generation,
were no different. They worked hard at
producing top Herefords and staying up with
the trends of the industry. They are greatly
missed, not only in the community, but
throughout the Hereford families across the
U.S. Brent and Robin had to step into the
management role at the untimely death of
Ferrall and Gloria, and have risen to the
challenge. They have continued the highquality cattle at Upstream Ranch and have
shown successes in marketing their cattle that
are second to no one.”
Genetically, Upstream Ranch is trying to
produce cattle with balanced-trait selection.
They are constantly striving for the proper
balance of calving ease, growth, maternal,
fertility and carcass traits. They are advocates
of using expected progeny differences
(EPDs) and ultrasound, but also make sure
their cattle excel phenotypically and in
temperament. Structural soundness and
docility are critical.
In 2006 Upstream ranked third in number
of Dams of Distinction, an honor bestowed
on outstanding Hereford females.
The family has exhibited four champion
carloads at the NWSS, the 1971 NWSS
champion Hereford bull, the 1972 reserve
champion Hereford bull, and supreme
Hereford and champion Hereford bull at the
100th NWSS in 2006, as well as the reserve
champion horned Hereford bull.
Guy Shull
The late Guy Shull graduated from
Oklahoma A&M College in 1949 and began
his career in the purebred livestock industry
as a fieldman for the Oklahoma FarmerStockman. He also operated Shull Hereford
Farm, a family enterprise in Elgin, Okla.
“He incorporated the top genetics into his
breeding program and strived to raise cattle
that fit the livestock industry, avoiding
extremes, while concentrating on birth
weight, fertility, udder quality, fleshing ability
and disposition,” says Warren Sidwell,
president of the Oklahoma Hereford
Association. “He was practicing 40-plus
years ago what we as an industry are focusing
on today.”
Guy held several successful production
sales and promoted his cattle at state and
national Hereford shows. Among the
highlights was exhibiting several class
winners at the NWSS.
He not only promoted his Herefords, but
others as well, serving as secretary-fieldman
for the Oklahoma Hereford Association for
27 years. Through his leadership and
marketing efforts Oklahoma Herefords
became recognized as a seedstock source on
the national level, and Oklahoma breeders
during his tenure exhibited several national
champion bulls and females. Guy also
continuously demonstrated his support for
Hereford youth.
For the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association
(OCA), he served as a committee chairman
and helped to organize and conduct the
annual OCA summer ranch tours.
After his purebred dispersion in the late
’60s, Guy continued to run a commercial
operation until his retirement.
Later in his career, Guy diversified and
became a purebred livestock auctioneer.
Colleague A.J. Smith of the Oklahoma
Cowman tells that Guy had a “seventh sense,”
knowing exactly what a bidder was willing
to pay for an animal. He utilized this sense
while crying sales from the early 1960s to
the mid-’80s.
“Guy not only strived to breed and market
the right kind of Hereford cattle that would
positively impact the Hereford breed, but
constantly promoted these values to anyone
who would listen,” Warren says.
Long before the merger of the horned and
Jill’s Editorial...
(continued from page 1)
I guarantee you, there are a lot more lines
on the map in Ohio than there are in South
Dakota. At least we didn’t get lost too bad. Last
month when we were in Canada a lady from
Ontario commented that they enjoy our
perspective out here (in the sticks) because it is
so different from where they live. They are on
the outskirts of Toronto where they raise
Herefords. After visiting Ohio I have a better
understand of her perspective.
To put the population differences into
perspective, South Dakota has approximately
761,000 people while Ohio has over 11 million
people. Just the city of Columbus alone has
about as many people as the entire state of South
Dakota. Yes, we’re hicks from the sticks. But
that’s okay, we like where we live even though
you have to drive quite a ways to shop at a large
grocery store.
Even with so many people in Ohio it is
amazing that there are still some rural areas
including big Amish country. It was really an
interesting trip for us and we attended three very
good sales with excellent cattle.
The Mohican farm is in the middle of Amish
country and is really quite beautiful. It’s in
rolling hills with lots of hardwood trees. While
we were there the trees were turning but due to
wind a lot of them had left the country. The grass
was still green and when we came over the hill
to their place, the sight of Hereford cattle on
polled national Hereford associations, Guy
made it known that his pet peeve was the
separate promotion of horned and polled
animals. He emphasized the need for a unified
breed. He also encouraged Hereford breeders
to focus on maintaining Hereford purity to
provide the most genetic kick in a
crossbreeding program.
Mike MacNeil
Mike MacNeil, native of New York State,
graduated from Cornell University with a
bachelor’s degree from the College of
Agriculture in 1974. He then went to work
for Dutchman Hereford Co. in Lauxmont,
Pa., until returning to school at Montana State
University, where he received a master’s
degree in animal science in 1978. He then
moved to South Dakota State University
(SDSU) to begin work on his doctorate’s
degree. In 1980 Mike left SDSU to join the
University of Nebraska staff at the U.S. Meat
Animal Research Center (MARC), Clay
Center, Neb., as the experiment station
statistician.
Mike was awarded his doctorate’s degree
from SDSU in 1982 for his work on genetic
antagonisms between sex-limited traits. In
1983 he joined the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research
Service at Clay Center. In 1989, Mike
transferred from MARC to Ft. Keogh
Livestock and Range Research Laboratory in
Miles City, Mont. Here he assumed
responsibility for the Line 1 Hereford
program.
Aspects of Mike’s research that have

lush green hills plus an old red barn was
gorgeous. (See photo on front cover.) The barn
is about 150 years old and the sale barn addition
was built by local Amish men. You can just feel
the history when you sit in that barn.
There were a lot of Polled Hereford breeders
from around the country at this sale as well as
the Stockdale-Grandview and SunnysideDettweiler sales. It made for a very enjoyable
Hereford weekend and it was nice to meet these
breeders.
Thanks to Lisa Finnegan, Buckeye Hereford
Association secretary/manager, for introducing
us to some of the locals and helping us get
around. We enjoyed visiting with her and
learning about Ohio Hereford breeders.

Lot 2 — JPH Ontime Call 1S
JPH ONTIME CALL 1S is a super herd bull prospect that has
natural eye appeal, is wide based with natural muscle thickness
and depth of body. 1S also has good bone & leg to him which
allows him to move out and stride freely. 1S is fully pigmented,
dark red with an excellent hair coat. Since birth, 1S has been a
delight and privilege to raise and has developed into the best
herd bull prospect that I have ever handled. His dam, RBC 100L
Maxine 420, is a superb Call 2 yr. old that I purchased in the 2005
Gopher Sale from Ross & Beth Carlson and by the evidence of
this super herd bull prospect, she is indeed maternally loaded
with genetic strength. She is milky and her udder is flawless!
Please note that 1S has the genetic strength of two time National
Champion, Online, and National Champion, Call, in his pedigree.

Byron’s Editorial...
(continued from page 1)
got to Red Deer we had enough of the storm
and decided to give up for the night. The next
day the weather was no better, but we motored
down the road to Edmonton however a big car
pileup forced us to take a 50 mile detour to the
east so we saw the country east of Edmonton
too.
Edmonton is now a city of over one half
million people so it took some searching for us
to find the Northlands Complex, which houses
the Farmfair event. I have seen livestock events
in Canada, the USA, Hungary, Spain,
Argentina, Uruguay, but I have never seen a
complex that is the equal of the Northlands
Complex. It is built on somewhat of an oval
with everything going to the middle where the
displays and concessions, and the International
Lounge are located.
It was Nov.7th when we arrived, (Yes, we
voted before we left the US) and checked in
with the Canadian Hereford Assn. booth, where
we were greeted by Gordon Stevenson, the
General Manager of the Canadian Hereford
Assn. and Byron Templeton, the current
President of the Canadian Hereford Assn., and
Katelyn Wildeman, of the CHA staff and Brad
Dallas of Bowden. After visiting with several
breeders in the area we started to look over the
nearly 300 head of horned and polled Herefords
that were housed in the complex. The Canadian
National Hereford sale was held that afternoon
so the usual pre sale “buzz” was going through
the crowd and the exhibitors. I ran into Doug
Finseth, the Manager of the Kallal herd at
Tofield, who was one of the Farmfair Hereford
officials and a good friend and acquaintance
for several years. Doug said, “You and Paul
come with me to the International AgBusiness
Center.” We were taken to the center of the
Complex and upstairs to a very nice room with
a person at the door to check people in. After
being taken to the registration desk we were
given membership in the Center, a nice carry
bag, which included many useful items for the
show and a card which gave us access to the
room for the duration. In this lounge was food,
drink, and “sweet goodies.” Near one wall were
large lounge chairs behind a large picture
window that looked out over the show ring, a
little like a sky box at a football game. As soon
as we were officially entered into the books at
the International Center, Gordon Stevenson
asked us to join him and Byron Templeton for
lunch. We enjoyed a nice lunch and a long talk
about the Hereford industry in North America.
This super treatment on the part of these people

directly benefited the AHA include:
1) comprehensively and objectively
characterizing Line 1 Hereford cattle; 2)
facilitating dominant use of Line 1 Hereford
cattle in bovine genomics; 3) developing profit
indexes for the AHA; 4) estimating the
economic value of heterosis; 5) developing
guidelines for implementing crossbreeding
systems; 6) identifying genetic antagonisms for
carcass and maternal traits; 7) evaluating
importance of cow families in performance of
Hereford cattle; 8) identifying and evaluating
new phenotypes for estimation of EPDs
(including calving date, metabolizable energy
intake of cows and ovulatory follicle size); 9)
identifying quantitative trait loci for phenotypes
of economic relevance to the beef industry and
especially to Hereford breeders; 10)
experimentally evaluating the genetic
antagonism between birth weight and
subsequent growth in Line 1 Hereford cattle;

was very gracious and I do not think I have
been treated any nicer at any event I have
attended than Farmfair International! We
continued to enjoy this International
AgBusiness Center throughout our stay at
Farmfair.
The sale was held next to the Hereford stalls
in the middle of the afternoon at one of the sales
arenas set up for the show. The sales prices for
the heifers, especially, were good. The few bulls
in the sale were of very good quality but were
more moderately priced.
Nov. 8th was the date of the big Hereford
show. The polled and horned Herefords were
shown in separate shows but the ring was split
so if you sat up high in the nice arena, you could
see both shows. There was a great set of quality
cattle shown. Some of the cattle had previously
sold for near record prices and some had won
other major shows in Canada.
It was a little surprising to me to see some
of the type differences in the classes. Through
my 30 years of viewing Canadian cattle as a
Judge and as a interested spectator, I have
always seen pretty big cattle shown. In this
show some new blood lines were shown that
were more moderate in size, and in a lot of cases
the judges placed them quite high, noting that
possibly we were getting the cattle too large.
Many breeders at ringside were discussing
the “big” issue as the show went on. In the end
the “big dollar” bulls won. They were both very
good bulls and deserved the banner.
We were hearing bad weather reports all day
so at about 2:30 PM Paul and I decided to head
for home. Light snow was falling as we
departed the Northlands Complex. It takes
about 45 minutes to get out of the city as it is
so large, but with the help of a nice young lady
in a sports car, we found the main road (2) and
headed south. About fifty miles north of
Calgary the roads started to get snow packed
and slick. Soon the traffic started to “pile up”
and we knew there was trouble ahead. All traffic
stopped and soon several ambulances came
“wailing” through the traffic and then several
RCMP (Mounties) cars arrived. We knew it was
a bad wreck and when we got to go by the scene
we could see that it was terrible. The two
vehicles involved were severely damaged and
we could tell by the responders that there were
fatalities. Paul said to me, “Several peoples’
lives were changed forever in this wreck” and
I agreed. The traffic went much slower for
awhile and then rolled on again. We hit Calgary
during rush hour and it was terrible, as big cities
are at rush hour. The heavy snow started again,
and it was so bad that many cars put their
warning lights on. When we got to High River
yearling weight in increasing calving ease,
production efficiency and carcass value.
“Dr. MacNeil has been a good friend and
inspiration to me as well as many other
livestock producers across America,” says
Mark Cooper, Cooper Hereford Ranch, Willow
Creek, Mont. “He has been a very influential
voice for the American producer and is much
deserving of this prestigious award.”
John Hough, vice president of Benyshek and
Hough Consulting Services, adds, “Mike is one
of only a few researchers who truly understands
both research theory and its application in the
livestock industry.”
Mike has authored, co-authored or edited
more than 260 scientific and technical
publications. These publications are frequently
cited, and resulting technologies have been
adopted by government agencies, livestock
producers and beef cattle breed associations.
Mike somehow still has time to be active in
his church and in the American Society of
Animal Science, as well as other professional
and civic organizations. He and his wife, Betty,
make their home outside Miles City and are the
parents of two children, Megan and Brendan.
we needed a morsel of food and fuel so we
stopped to talk the situation over. The word
from the travelers was that the storm was on
our backside and it was better ahead. So we
pushed on and sure enough it got better and by
11:00 we were back to Paul’s place.
I drove home the next morning in good
winter weather. It took me about 25 hours to
make the 1500 mile trip but what a trip. I saw
many good friends that I have not seen for some
time, met many new people, saw a great
Hereford show and talked about an industry that
I have lived with for 76 years. We were treated
so kindly in Canada it makes you want to go
back again soon, but the reality is that father
time has probably figured that this may be one
of my last trips north to Canada.
I want to congratulate Mike MacNeil of Fort
Keogh on receiving the honor of being inducted
into the AHA Hall of Merit. I visit with Mike
often on issues in the field and he has always
been honest and helpful.
I read with great interest the announcement
that Rachel Endicott was named MSU/Ext.
Beef Cattle Specialist, located at Fort Keogh.
Rachel is the daughter of Bob and Janet
Endicott of McAllister, MT.
Rachel is a granddaughter of Bob and Cora
Goggins, longtime Hereford breeders at Ennis.
I have known and watched Rachel for years
show her Hereford steers and heifers at our
Madison County Fair. She was always at or near
the top of the class. Rachel is a fine young
woman. We are very fortunate to have Dr.
Rachel in her new position.
