Ash Wednesday - Galen Catholic College
Galen Catholic College Newsletter
Wednesday 17th February 2016
Issue 2
Ash Wednesday
Staff and students came together in Homerooms to observe Ash Wednesday. Liturgies were conducted and Ashes distributed.
Students were advised of the significance of the ashes and the commencement of the season of Lent. We are encouraged
in this year of Mercy to consider our neighbors, especially through the work of Caritas and what contributions we can make
towards building stronger communities.
Vale, Joan Selwood
Staff gathered on Monday to reflect and pray for Joan Selwood,
who passed away suddenly. Joan was working in the Hospitality
and Food Technology areas as an Assistant until close to the end
of last year when her health deteriorated.
Joan also spent many years prior to this role working in the
Galen canteen and would be well known to most staff. Her three
children also came through Galen, the most recent four years
ago. Joan is fondly remembered as a gardener who was
instrumental in planting the herb garden outside the hospitality
area. The Galen community offers our deepest sympathy to
Joan’s family.
Galen, my place of opportunity.

Our Year 12 students are off to a flying start for their final year of secondary
school. I had the privilege of attending both Year 12 retreats in their first week
and then their Jumper Presentation Night last week. At each of these major
events the students have impressed us with their dedicated approach to the year
ahead. There is a genuine spirit of wanting to do well and to achieve the best of
which they are capable.
Walking around the yard before school, at recess and at lunchtime the spirit
across all year levels is very apparent. I have nothing but praise for our students
in the start they have made to the year.
Vale Joan Selwood
Our school community was deeply saddened by the recent death of staff
member, Mrs Joan Selwood, following a brief but difficult battle with cancer.
Joan has been a long serving member of the Galen family with her three sons
CASE STUDY
attending the school in years gone by, with her work for many years in the
school canteen and with her more recent work as a Hospitality Assistant in the
new Hospitality Centre.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Joan’s family, but especially to her
husband, Peter, and her sons, Ryan, Timothy and Lachlan.
May she rest in peace.
Some more new staff
I am happy to announce the appointment of the following two new staff
members to the school since the start of the year.
• Mr Matthew Turnbull – teacher of RE and Humanities
• Ms Teresa Southern – Hospitality Assistant
Update on building works
With the completion of Stage 1A - the relocation and refurbishment of the
Junior School portable classrooms - our attention is now on ensuring good
landscaping around the newly positioned buildings. These works will commence
over the next fortnight.
We are also ready now to go to tender in the next fortnight for Stage 1B – the
building of the new Senior School. We are exactly on target for the timeline for
these works, firstly with the tender process and then with construction due to
start in April.

Senior School News
Mick Grogan - Senior School Director
Year 12 students began the year formally at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, with their annual Year 12 Jumper and
Award Presentation evening, last Wednesday.
Jeremy Carr a former Galen student from 2001, as special guest speaker delivered a very entertaining and engaging speech. His
delivery was underpinned by the themes of; having a crack, the harder you work in life the luckier you get, you can turn things
round with perseverance, carpe diem, procrastination will get you nowhere and seizing all opportunities. The old saying, the
apple doesn’t fall far from the tree was clearly evident, as Jeremy delivered some classic one liners that his parents would be
proud of.
Students were also encouraged to focus on the importance of
supporting one another on their journey throughout the year.
Prior to the presentation of the jumpers, the VCE academic awards
for 2015 were presented, including the Dux for 2015, which was
shared by Fergus Samon and Ryley Pasquali. A special bursary was
also presented to Ryley.
Additionally Kaitlyn Ritchie received an award from Latrobe
University for academic performance and contribution to the
school community.
College Captains for 2016, were also officially announced.
Successful candidates Will Robinson and Chloe Hancock both feel
very honoured to be given the opportunity to represent Galen
College as student leaders this year.
The start to the year has been terrific. Year 12 Students have been
keen to embrace their studies and participated reflectively and
thoughtfully in the retreats held last week.
Year 11 students have received details about their upcoming Camp
that will take place at Harrietville or Alexandra. It is important that
the forms associated with this activity are completed and returned to
school promptly, please.
“These new Year 12 jumpers are so COOL!”
“I know right, soooo COOL!”

Information for Bus Travellers
• ONE TIME /TEMPORARY BUS TRAVEL
If you are a student needing to travel on a school bus for a
one-off occasion, you are able to do so, as long as it is for
school related purposes i.e. study groups.
Students will not be issued a temporary bus pass for Netball/
Football/Birthday Parties etc. Please keep this in mind when
requesting a temporary bus pass.
If travel is required on a Public bus, you will be asked to pay
the nominated fee (which can cost anywhere between $1.20
to $5.00, depending on the destination), to the bus driver.
• STUDENT CONCESSION CARD - For students NOT eligible
for Conveyance allowance
As you know, over the past two years the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development have
changed the way they apply the rules governing eligibility
for parents in the Beechworth and Rutherglen / Wahgunyah
to access the Conveyance Allowance and free School Bus
Program.
1. From the Galen front office
2. Online at http://ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/concessions/students
3. At any VLine station (including Wangaratta Railway station)
The Concession Card will cost $9 upon Submission,
payable to Public Transport Victoria.
Step 2 – apply for a Student Pass
Once the Concession Card has been processed, the applicant
can then purchase a Student Pass – applications forms are
available from :
1. Online at http://ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/concessions/students
2. At any VLine station
Pricing is as follows:
2016 STUDENT PASS
Half Yearly
$285
Full Year
$546
This has resulted in parents of children in these areas having to pay public transport fares for their children to travel
to school. Despite the best efforts of Galen and the Catholic
Education Office to have the government reverse this decision, this has generally meant a cost to parents for transport
fares of over $800 per year for each child.
Once the Student Pass has been purchased, the application
will be forwarded to the Seymour Railway Station to be processed and fares loaded onto a MYKI card. Seymour will then
return it to Wangaratta Railway Station, where the applicant
will be contacted to collect their pass. Passes have a 48hr
turnover, possibly shorter if submitted before 12pm, Mon to
Thurs.
Galen has received advice that there is a way for parents to
significantly reduce this overall cost. As always with government departments there is a process to follow but in this
instance it is a relatively simple process. There is a further benefit in that the fares purchased will be added to a new MYKI
card and will cover the costs of all Victorian Public Transport
services, including Melbourne metropolitan services.
Please note
Both Cards must be carried by the student at all times when
travelling, to be presented to the driver/ticketing station
when boarding bus/train.
The Student Pass will cover all Victorian Public Transport
services (Melbourne, Bright etc.), within the specified ticket
period.
I am grateful to Galen staff member, Ms Sandra Leerson, for
providing the following summary of the advice we have
recently received:
If any cards are lost, a new one should be applied for.
If pass is no longer required (moved address and no longer
needs to use public transport), a refund may be considered
on a Pro Rata basis, as long as the applicant can present the
relevant MYKI card.
CONCESSIONS - Student Pass (MYKI)
Concessions are now available for all students who are
NOT eligible for conveyance allowance.
There are 3 steps:
Please do not hesitate to contact Sandra Leerson at Galen
Catholic College on (03)5721 6322, if you have any further
questions.
Step 1 – Obtain a Concession Card
Concession Card application is to be completed (photos included), authorised by Galen Catholic College, then returned
to Wangaratta Railway Station for processing. Applications
for a Concession Card are available from 3 locations for Galen
students:

Uniform:
Uniform to this point has been very good. Just a reminder
that shoes must have black leather uppers. Canvas/cloth
uppers do meet uniform requirements. Black socks are not
permitted. Socks must be white. Hats should be carried at
all times during recess and lunchtimes. When in the sun
students are required to be wearing their hat. When in the
shade they do not have to be wearing their hat.
Punctuality has also been very good. Remember that first
bell goes at 8.45am and HR commences at 8.50am.
Phone Policy for Middle School Students
Students are not to have their phone on them in class. If a
student brings their phone to school it must be locked in
their locker.
Catch Up days for 2016
Due to the overwhelming support in 2015 of Galen’s ‘catch
up days’ will be continuing these in 2016. We will not accept
students simply refusing to complete or submit assessment
tasks. Each term Galen has identified student free days we
will be providing an opportunity for those students who
have work overdue to come into school and complete
those tasks under supervision. Year level coordinators will
be contacting students and requesting their attendance in
a bid to ensure they are up-to-date.
We look forward to your continued support of our
endeavours to ensure your sons/daughters are adequately
prepared and ready for their studies at Galen.
If a student has more than one overdue assessment task
for the term they will be expected to attend the following
student free days.

Pancakes for Project Compassion
With limited support services for children living with
intellectual disabilities in Laos, Duangmala feared that
her eight-year-old son, Hum Noy, would never reach his
full potential because he has Down Syndrome. However,
he now has the chance to learn and thrive at a school for
children with intellectual disabilities, supported by Caritas
Australia.
Please donate to Project Compassion 2016 and help
children living with intellectual disabilities in Laos learn,
grow and reach their full potential. You can donate at the
College or by visiting the Galen donation webpage at:
http://my.caritasfundraising.org.au/galen
Galen Catholic College’s Year 11 VCAL class was kept busy on
Tuesday 9th February making pancakes for hordes of students
on Shrove Tuesday. With pancake stacks being sold for $3.00,
all proceeds from the event will go towards Caritas’ Project
Compassion, raising much-needed funds for those living in
poverty. Year 11 VCAL student Ellie Hourigan said, “It feels good
knowing that we’re raising money for a good cause, especially
those who need it most. Hopefully our donation will help those
people have the things we take for granted like food, clean
water and clothes.”
Through their efforts, students raised a total of $681.00 from
their sales during recess. This sum of money will be added to
during other activities at Galen during Lent. Class teacher Paul
Walker expressed how impressed he was with the students,
“I’m very proud of the way they promoted the event, prepared,
cooked and cleaned up - all for a great cause.”
