pring break will be here before you know it. If you
have plans for a mini-vacation away from home, give
us a call for the House Watch Program. Take advantage of
our online program to set up your House Watch at: www.
fortbendcounty.gov, or call our office well in advance
during our work week of Monday-Friday between 8AM5PM, at 281-341-4536. By now, school is back in full
swing. It is time again to think about safety in and around
the school zones and to obey the rules set by the schools,
especially with regard to drop off and pick up areas and
procedures. If you are dropping off your child at a day
care, don’t leave your car unlocked for that short run in
and run out delivery. Thieves can be watching and the day
care centers are prime targets.
Remember, do not use cell phones in the school zones,
and watch your speed and come to a complete stop (when a
vehicle ceases movement) behind the stop signs. We have
come across an interesting theory as to why people violate
driving laws. Dr. Gerald Wilde, a Professor Emeritus of
Psychology at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada,
developed something called the Risk Homeostasis Theory,
and it can be applied to law enforcement in a variety of
ways. The theory states that everyone on the planet has
their own fixed-level of acceptable risk, and they will
adjust their life accordingly to maintain the risk they are
comfortable with. Could it be that we are seeing reckless
behavior by our citizens, who know better, that they
actually like the extra risk? Or, are they are just wrapped
up in their own daydreams and agendas for the day, or are
they talking on their cell phones?
With all those new gadgets and bicycles received
as gifts this last Christmas, have you recorded the serial
numbers? Many children have received new iPods or cell
phones with all the latest applications. We mentioned
before about the GPS systems in those new devices. Be
sure they are not left somewhere so that a predator can
program in a code to eaves drop or to find their location.
A few parents have this system on some of their children’s
phones. Predators can find them as easily as parents
can. Also, concerning the more adult side of gadgets, the
same goes for the GPS you have for your car. There is no
reason that you should put your address under “home” in
its memory. Instead, put in the address of the local law
enforcement agency and mark it as “home.” The criminal
who steals it will be in for a big surprise if he/she thinks
they are coming to your house for a home invasion.
Keep calling in those suspicious activities. It can save
lives and protects your neighbor’s property. Remember to
say “NO” to solicitors.

Scamming Your Cell Phone With Texting
By John Bowen
I
n past articles, we have covered many of the tricks and schemes
used by scam artists to procure personal information from
individuals they perceive may be vulnerable. Access and use of
this information has lead to an ever-increasing fraudulent use
in robbing victims of their personal savings, benefits, homes
and reputations. Even when discovered, these efforts have cost
their victims significant time and money to overcome or repair
the personal damages caused by these scams.
Recently, I came across an article that deals with another
mechanism being used by scam artists to procure personal
information from unknowing victims. The device in question
is your cell phone. One of the most used practices with cell
phones is the texting mechanism used by young and old alike.
Much has been written about the dangers of texting on one’s
cell phone while driving down a street or highway. Laws have
been passed that prohibit the use of a cell phone inside a
specified school zone during specific times of each day when
schools are in session. The reason for these restrictions should
be obvious: you cannot effectively and safely drive a vehicle
and text on your cell phone at the same time. Children can be
in a school crossing under the control and watchful eye of the
school crossing guard, and someone driving along with their
eyes on their cell phone, can drive right through the crossing.
The results of this act are self-conclusive. I have heard more
than one resident complain about the lack of attention being
paid by a number of individuals driving through the school
zone areas while students are going to or coming from their
school by way of street crossings.
Let’s discuss another potentially serious consequence of
texting on your cell phone. The pattern of the texting described
in this article is a scam very familiar and very similar to that
used in attempting procurement of personal information from
your internet address, via a call on your home or business
phone, or from receipt of an official looking letter or document
in the mail. As an example, with the texting approach, your cell
phone would chime that a text message has come in to your
mail center. In this particular case, it is a message supposedly
from your bank telling you that one of your accounts has been
frozen. It requests that you please call the following number
to clear up this issue. Most of us would have an immediate
concern and desire to rectify this issue as quickly as possible.
If you remember all the other terms I have shared with you
before, you can now add another: you have just been “smished.”
Smishing is an offshoot of another phenomena we have
covered in a past article called “phishing.” The latter are emails
that try to trick you into disclosing personal or financial
information. “Smishing” is named for the SMS (short message
service) technology used to send text messages. There is
another variation called “vishing.” Instead of a text message,
you receive a call or voice message providing you with the
same message described above in the “smishing” example.
Because of the numerous warnings people have received
regarding Internet or computer based scams, scammers have
looked to the cell phone as a new frontier for scamming the
general public. Statistics show that cell phone users are three
times more likely to fall for fake messages than computer users
according to the security firm Trusteer. When you call the
number the text message or voice mail message has given you,
you are directly connected to the scammers, who ask for your
account number, PIN, Social Security Number, or what is called
the “raw material” of identity theft.
While bogus bank alerts may be the highest number of scam
attempts, you may also receive texts promising a free laptop,
mortgage assistance or lottery winnings. You may receive a
short message like “you are a winner, or short on cash, or we
need to talk to you immediately.” Like your computer, once they
entice you to click on the link, it will instigate fact downloads
identity-stealing software on your cell phone.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently moved
against a firm that was allegedly offering phony government
loans by text. Per the FTC, five and a half million text messages
were sent to cell phones in just 40 days. This calculates to
approximately 85 messages per minute. Even worse, this
outfit is also alleged to have sold the numbers of people who
replied asking to be removed from their list. This sends a
strong message: DO NOT REPLY TO ANY OF THESE KIND OF
MESSAGES!
So how do you defend yourself?
1. Don’t reply. Even sending a “remove” or “stop” response
to a “smishing” text tells scammers that your number is
active, meaning you may get more messages.
2. Don’t click on links in texts sent to you by unknown parties.
3. Block suspicious numbers. Your cell phone provider may
be able to block numbers where texts and calls originate.
4. Your bank is texting you? Look up its number yourself,
don’t trust the one provided in the text and then call your
bank to discuss the message received.
5. Do not store credit card and account login information in
emails or notes on the phone.
6. Set your phone to time out and lock after a short period. If
it’s stolen, thieves won’t get personal information.
7. Install updates. When you receive a bona fide notification
of an upgrade to your phone’s software, install it
immediately. If you doubt the message is legitimate, call
your cell or app provider.
As I have often said, conditions we face each day when out
in the public or even in the confines of our homes, requires
us to be vigilant. As I noted in the Color of Awareness article
some time ago, do not allow yourself to remain in the White
Color Zone when dealing directly or indirectly with individuals
outside your home. Always be alert to the dangers that are
around you and you will have a safer and happier life.

Libraries’ Family Reading Club
Continues Through March 3
T
he popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer
Reading Clubs for children, teens, and adults has inspired
the library system to add a similar program for families during
the winter season. The six-week Family Reading Club, which
began on January 21, will continue through March 3, at all
branches in the Fort Bend County library system.
This six-week program is designed to encourage families
to read, learn, and have fun together. All Fort Bend County
families are eligible to participate.
“The best way to help children learn new words and
to build a larger vocabulary is to talk and read with them,”
says Susan King, Coordinator of Youth Services for the library
system. “Children hear more new words when you read books
to them.”
Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books
per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a
drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of
the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the
gift card on March 5.
A single registration is required for each participating
family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register
the family online by going to the library’s website (http://
www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading
Club Sign-Up” image. Families may also register at one of
the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon
registering, families will then have their own online page on
which to record their books or reading time.
There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The
program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the
Friends of the Library organizations that support the county
library system.
For more information, call the library’s Public Information
Office at 281-341-2677, or the library branch nearest you.
I
f you haven’t had an opportunity to tour the new University
Branch Library, now is your chance. The staff of the University
Branch Library invites newcomers in the area to attend a basic
introduction to the library, its online catalog, and all the resources
that become available with a library card. The February orientation
session will take place every Tuesday, beginning at 2:00 and 6:00
pm, and every Wednesday, beginning at 10:30 am, in the Computer
Lab at the library, located at 14010 University Blvd. in Sugar Land.
Those attending will hear about different types of library
materials, including eBooks, and about upcoming programs and
classes. They will receive a virtual tour through the library’s
website, and will learn how to access the different online services
that are available on the website. Patrons will also learn how to
access their online library account to reserve items or to renew
items already checked out.
The orientation sessions are free and open to the public. Those
who wish to attend may register on the library’s website (www.
fortbend.lib.tx.us), click on “calendar,” select “University Branch
Library,” and find the program. Participants may also register by
calling the library at 281-633-5100, or by visiting the library.

T
he Youth Services staff at Fort Bend County Libraries’
University Branch Library invites families to attend a
“Youth Program Sampler” on Saturday, February 4, from 12:00
noon to 2:30 pm. Learn more about the various youth programs
that the library presents each month for children of all ages.
Multicultural stories and activities will be presented in
locations throughout the Youth Services department. A puppet
show and Story Time will take place in the Large Meeting Room
starting at 12:15, 1:00, and 1:45 pm. Children may participate
in a variety of craft activities in the Small Meeting Room during
the course of the event.
Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) teen volunteers will be
collecting gently-used books to be donated to the Friends of
the Library organization for the book sales they hold during
the year. Proceeds from the Friends’ book sales and annual
membership dues help to underwrite the costs of special
programming and various cultural events at the University
Branch Library. All contributions are tax-deductible.
The event is free and open to the public. For more
information, call the branch library at 281-633-5100 or the

On the Board’s Agenda...
D
ue to the City of Sugar Land’s current surface water
charges, the ever-increasing cost of water has resulted
in higher annual dues for Greatwood residents. Therefore,
the Board of Directors continues to investigate better ways
of regulating and dispersing our vast irrigation system.
Everything from new, more state-of-the-art controllers to
advanced atmospheric computer controlled systems that
respond to measured weather and historic rainfall data
supplied via the Internet, are being considered.
The security of Greatwood continues to be an ongoing
issue. We are making a renewed evaluation of camera
systems, both monitored and historical. We hope to bring
the results of this study to the Representatives soon for a
cost effective evaluation.
In keeping with our continued effort to maintain the
quality and usability of our infrastructure and assets, the
large pool, located at Recreation Center #1, was refurbished
and re-plastered. We expect that with our new pool
contractor and his attention to proper water conditions,
we will avoid some of the quality issues of past seasons. To
see a video of the re – plastering of the pool go to:

There will also be a silent auction and raf le along with a
dinner buffet, cash bar, music and free valet service. “We are
so excited to have Sterling McCall Lexus as a sponsor,” said
Michelle Rhone, VP of fundraising for ARJH PTO. “They are
also generously providing free valet service for the evening,
and guests who drive a Lexus to the event will receive a gift
in their car, courtesy of Sterling McCall Lexus.”
Denim & Diamonds was very popular last year, and
tickets are in demand. Don’t miss out on a fun evening with
friends. Get a group together and reserve a table for 10.
Tickets are $100/couple or $50/single. The ticket price
includes dinner, $1,000 in casino chips, dancing and a funilled night out without kids. “You don’t have to be an ARJH
parent or teacher to attend,” said So ia Sheikh. “The invitation
is open to the community, and we would especially like to
invite parents of students who will be ARJH sixth graders
next year.” Sheikh said it’s not too early to start supporting
and becoming involved in ARJH.
For those who are unable to attend the event, there are
always the options of purchasing tickets for family members
or teachers to attend, making a monetary donation in honor
of someone or donating an item for the silent auction or raf le.
“We are grateful for all the generosity of the community and
local businesses,” said Michelle Rhone. “Since ARJH is only
two years old, every ticket sale and donation is important
to allow us continue to build the PTO and provide for the
school.”
To purchase tickets, go to the ARJH PTO website at www.
readingpto.org and click on the Denim & Diamonds link. If
you are interested in sponsoring, donating or volunteering
for Denim & Diamonds, please contact Michelle Rhone, VP of
Fundraising, at [email protected] or So ia Sheikh,
Denim & Diamonds Chair, at [email protected].

Good vision is a critical learning tool for children and can
significantly contribute to a child’s success in school. A
comprehensive eye exam is the best way to diagnose and
treat vision problems before they interefere with a child’s
abililty to learn.
