DARING TO DREAM
The greatest achievements of any person, group,
organization, institution, or endeavor typically began first as
a dream, a thought, or an idea. For example, the Founding
Fathers of our country first dreamed of a better way of life,
a future – an independent country – where people could
enjoy freedoms and pursue their dreams without oppression
or fear. Their dream or vision of a new nation was soon
shared by many others and solidified a people who were
willing and daring enough to fight to make that dream a
reality. That sentiment hearkened the beginnings of a new
nation that would be known as the United States of America.

In 1892 a small band of the Sisters of St. Joseph dreamed of forming a school so that the young
women of the Erie area would have an opportunity for an education in a climate and culture
that did not provide many opportunities to educate women. Nonetheless, in spite of various
hardships, the Sisters pursued their dream, worked hard, and prayed even harder and soon
a new school, which they named Villa Maria Academy in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
opened its doors as the first Catholic high school in Erie. Along with the various academic
disciplines, the Sisters instilled in their students their charism of loving God and loving
neighbor. With God’s grace, that dream continues to be realized to this very day.
Without a doubt, Villa Maria has a splendid history and treasured traditions. We all enjoy
reminiscing about the various events, people, and stories that form our colorful past. They are
integral to the foundation from which sprouts our ability to dream for the future. In fact, our
traditions and history are not about impeding our move into the future, but rather they are an
encouragement and impetus for us to dream big and to actively form and pursue our futures,
both individually and collectively. Those who dared to dream in the past have brought us to
where we are today, and thus our present dreams will propel us into the future.
We as a school have been blessed with the ability to dream not only of our future, but to actively
and passionately pursue it. Look at the various changes that have taken place over the past
few years: the ongoing renovations of the building; the school’s new chapel, fitness center,
and Villa Café; the incorporation of technology in the classroom; the implementation of new
academic programs; and the achievements and successes of our various athletic teams, theatrical
productions, and special events. These are the result of our daring to dream for a better future
and making those dreams a reality. And the dreaming has not stopped or slowed in the least.
Read the articles contained within the pages of this edition of Villa’s Essence, and you will learn
about the dreams of various individuals that have become a reality and the dreams that we
as a school have for the future. You will also read about people who have philanthropically
committed to helping Villa Maria dream for the future.
Villa Maria Academy dares to dream. Under the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit and
a deep sense of gratitude to those who support us, we will actively work to make our dreams a
reality so that we can inspire future generations to do the same. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us!
Sincerely yours in Christ,

COVER STORY
I
A Daring Dream
n 1879, a fire destroyed the Main
Building, which housed a small school in
the Midwest called the University of Notre
Dame. After the fire, Fr. Edward Sorin, the
Holy Cross priest who founded Notre Dame,
said, “In 1842 I came here as a young man
and dreamed of building a great university
in honor of Our Lady. But I built it too
small. So tomorrow, after the bricks cool,
we will rebuild it, bigger and better than
ever.” The rest, of course, is history.
It seems that all great things begin with a
dream. Fr. Sorin had his dream. He had
that rare ability to dream what no one
else could even imagine. The same can
be said for Archbishop John Mark Gannon
and the Sisters of St. Joseph, the respective
founders of Cathedral Preparatory School
and Villa Maria Academy. 93 years later for
Cathedral Prep, and 122 years later for Villa
Maria Academy, their collective dream for
educating young men and young women
is still going strong, so strong in fact that
it’s time to continue dreaming what many
thought to be impossible.

In December of 2013, it was announced
that Prep and Villa had received a gift from
an anonymous alumnus in the amount of
$10,000,000. The money was earmarked
to fulfill the strategic objectives of the
school, beginning with the completion
of what is known as the Cathedral Prep
Events Center (CPEC). The construction
of the first phase of CPEC (a turf field for
football, soccer, and lacrosse; an eightlane all-weather track; and a building for
locker rooms and concessions) began prior
to the Prep-Villa collaboration. Since the
dedication of CPEC, Prep boys and Villa
girls have enjoyed using this magnificent
facility. The original intent was to someday
add to the facility by building a gymnasium
and aquatic center, but nobody really knew
when that time would come. Guess what?
The time is now. It’s time to complete the
dream. It’s time to give our young men and
women the very best. It’s time to be daring.
In a few short weeks, a groundbreaking
ceremony will commence the construction
of the gym and aquatic center with an

anticipated completion date of September
2015. The renderings on these pages are
the result of countless hours of creativity,
research, and hard work to build the finest
facility of its kind in the area. The gym
will consist of a regulation college-size
basketball court, and when the bleachers
are rolled back, we will have two regulation
college-size courts side-by-side. The seating
capacity will be over 1,800, which includes
400 reserved seats, and a luxury box. A
three-lane running track will overlook
the gym, and additional locker rooms and
offices will also be a part of the gymnasium
building. The aquatic center will consist
of not one, but two pools, with a seating
capacity in excess of 500. The competition
pool will be an eight-lane, all- deep pool,
with a 1-meter diving board, which will
represent the only pool of its kind in the Erie
area. The center will also feature a threelane shallow training and teaching pool
that will be used for swim lessons, aquatic
therapy, and also serve as a warm-up/cooldown pool for competitive swimmers. The
additional components of the aquatic center
consist of a 4,000-square-foot state-of-theart fitness and training room overlooking
the pools, a Rambler-Victor retail store,
and locker rooms. You can follow the
week-by-week progress of construction via
Facebook, Twitter, and of course, by visiting
our website (www.prep-villa.com).
Almost 80% of our young men and women
participate in sports and/or intramurals,
so this facility will provide countless hours
of activity for almost the entire student
body. Additionally, our partner Catholic
elementary schools will also utilize the
facility for many of their athletic events as
well.
Spring 2014
The very mission of our school is embodied
by the young men and women who walk
the halls and play on the athletic fields.
It is with them in mind, and the rich
traditions of Cathedral Preparatory School
and Villa Maria Academy, that we embark
on this ambitious project. Like Fr. Sorin,
Archbishop Gannon, and the Sisters of St.
Joseph, let’s dream big, and through God’s
guidance and grace, let’s always, always
dare to dream.

Villa Maria Academy & Cathedral
Prep Receive Largest Gift in the
History of the School - $10M!
O
n December 19, 2013, Villa Maria Academy and Cathedral Preparatory School
announced the largest gift in the history of the school. An alumnus who wishes
to remain anonymous donated $10,000,000! The gift was given to support the ongoing
renovation projects at both the Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy campuses, which
have included the recent renovation of the Villa Library and the installation of the Villa
Café. Additionally, the gift will be used to fund the renovation of the Cathedral Prep Library
and the completion of the Cathedral Prep Events Center, which includes a gymnasium and
aquatic center.
Father Scott Jabo, president of Prep and Villa, is thrilled and overwhelmed by this most
significant gift. “A gift of this magnitude is not only astonishing, but more importantly, it will
significantly enhance the school’s efforts to provide the very best education for our students,
particularly by accelerating our plans to renovate our current facilities and to build new ones
as well as providing support for various other initiatives. Obviously, this gift will greatly
enrich our educational and formational programs. I am deeply grateful that this individual
has such confidence in our school. Such generosity is quite an inspiration to all of us. This
is truly a wonderful Christmas gift for our school – one which will make a huge difference in
the lives of our students and our community for many generations to come. It is definitely an
answer to our prayers.”
The gift represents not only historic generosity, but also an unwavering commitment to the
future of the young men and women of Prep and Villa. The donor truly hopes the gift will
inspire other alumni, alumnae, parents, friends, businesses, and others to give as well. The
school will continue fundraising efforts that will be necessary to bring the above-mentioned
projects, and others, to fruition.
On July 1 of 2010, Villa Maria Academy kicked
off our most aggressive Capital Campaign in
the history of the school. Mission-PassionVision: The Campaign for Villa Maria Academy
announced a goal of $3M. We are proud to
announce that Villa has surpassed that goal by
$450,000! This would not have been possible
without the extreme generosity of our donors
who partnered with us along the past three years
to trump this milestone.
We thank our benefactors who committed to
providing the necessary resources to create new
opportunities for the young women of today,
so that their dreams may be realized and their
futures brightened.

and athletics, these are the qualities that make
Prep a good school. But they aren’t what make
Prep a great school, and they aren’t why I am so
proud to call myself a Rambler. What sets Prep
apart is our dedication to spirit and community.
What makes our school great is brotherhood.
When I was a freshman, I thought brotherhood
was just a buzzword, a marketing term that

Kayla McBride
S
he is likely the greatest female basketball player
to ever come through Erie. After winning the
first two state basketball championships in Villa
Maria history and becoming the program’s all-time
leading scorer along the way, Kayla McBride turned
a national recruitment into a scholarship at Notre
Dame.
Her game only elevated from there. McBride was
a four-year letter-winner, a three-year starter, a 3rd
Team All-American as a junior, and a 1st Team AllAmerican in her senior season with the Irish. Tabbed the ACC Player
of the Year, Kayla averaged 17.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists
a game as Notre Dame played for the national championship before
falling to UConn for their only loss of the ’13-’14 season.
Professional scouts took notice as the San Antonio Stars selected her
third overall in the WNBA draft. That matched the highest selection
in Notre Dame history by one of their alums in the WNBA draft for a
player who finished fifth all-time in scoring in Irish history.
Below, Kayla brings us all up to date on the incredible strides she has
made in a very short time since graduating from Villa in 2010.
Q: Have you had a chance to sit back and think about what you’ve
accomplished, between making the All-American team, to finishing
second in the country to being selected third overall in the draft? It
makes for an incredible trifecta.
Kayla: It’s a lot to reflect on. I haven’t had too much time to do so
yet, but talking to the media in San Antonio has given me a chance
to look at what’s happened. It’s a good feeling leaving all of this on
good terms. At Notre Dame we were one of 343 teams to start the
season and one of just two to play for the national championship.
That is amazing.
Q: What does the San Antonio organization have in store for you
leading up to the start of the WNBA season?
Kayla: I arrived in town right after the draft and immediately did a
lot of media stuff, letting everyone know what kind of player and
person I am. I have met with the coaches to go over the business
side of things, and I have met with some of the players as I try to get
acclimated with the city and team. San Antonio seems like a great
place to live, and I’m really looking forward to it.
Q: Most NFL and NBA draftable players basically drop out of school
to prepare for their professional careers. Where are you in relation to
graduating from Notre Dame?
Kayla: I am going to graduate from college on time on May 18, as
that is my main priority. I know that the graduation will occur during
the WNBA season, but that’s a huge priority for me to walk for our
graduation at Notre Dame. School is still my number one priority
until May 18.
Q: How much did the strong academic and athletic
foundation you received at Villa assist in where you are right
now?
Kayla: It gave me a strong foundation heading into Notre
Dame, being able to balance academics with athletics. I
learned a lot about that as a freshman, and I took those
experiences and was able to balance those two things as I
went further along in college.
Q: You were the best player in the state of Pennsylvania on
two teams that won state championships at Villa. How did
that prepare you for Division I basketball?
Kayla: I knew how to win. One of the reasons coach
McGraw recruited me to Notre Dame was I knew how to be
a winner. Winning has always been a part of me, and our
class at Notre Dame has been the winningest class in school
history. I know how much hard work it takes to be a winner,
and I’m willing to put that time in because I love to win.
Q: Young basketball players, especially those from Villa,
really have enjoyed following and communicating with you
during your great run of success. How great has that made
you feel?
Kayla: Even in high school seeing the teachers come to
watch you at games, means something and is very special.
That really meant a lot to me when they would come watch
us play. Seeing my high school have a pep rally for me in
advance of the national championship game was incredible.
I retweeted that as I was so excited and so proud to be a
member of the Villa community. It means a lot.
Q: How much has starting and having so much success at one
of the best college programs in the country prepared you for your
professional career?
Kayla: I think it’s given me a lot of confidence. I’ve been able to play
with players currently in the WNBA which has helped. But I’m also
treating this as a new opportunity as I have to justify myself in this
league. It’s like I’m starting as a freshman all over again, which is a
great challenge.
Q: Many WNBA players also play in Europe during their ‘off’ season.
Do you plan on doing the same thing?
Kayla: I am working on getting an agent right now, and my plan is
to play overseas after the WNBA season. Many of the top players in
the WNBA do this, and I would like to do the same. The schedule in
Europe basically runs from September to January.

discussing another familiar product with Kelly called
Wubbanub. They were discussing the benefits and
issues of it. That’s when they decided to come up
with their own product to accommodate babies.
Taylor’s newborn triplet girls were suffering from
severe acid reflux, and the permanently attached

actually preferred a different pacifier altogether. It
was after all of that we decided to create a product
that would meet the needs of both parents and
children alike. Our mission has been to fill a void in
the marketplace with the highest quality plush toy
that also has a purposeful function.”
In the fall of 2012, the company was founded and
they debuted their product at the New York City

Villa Grad Helps to Save a Life
The recipient was a 21-year-old girl from Germany
who had a blood disease. Valentine, who is
German, said, “I was overwhelmed with emotion
knowing that I could help save this woman’s life.”
Prior to the procedure, Valentine had an injection
of medicine (in the arm or abdomen) that helps
pull the stem cells from the bone. Some people
experience effects such as headaches or bone
or muscle aches, for several days before PBSC
donation. These are side effects of the filgrastim
injections and will go away shortly after the PBSC
donation. Filgrastim is a drug given by injection
each day for five days before the PBSC donation.
Valentine built herself up for the worst-case
scenario. She experienced some minor aching, but
no pain.
On February 25, Valentine had to drive about 45
minutes away to have the procedure done. It’s
called peripheral stem cell blood donation (PBSC).
Valentine was surprised that she didn’t have to do
more. She said, “The entire donation process took
about 4½ hours.” Following the process, Valentine
couldn’t believe it. She said, “Is this it? Is this all it
takes to save a life? How could you deny someone
a chance? Valentine said, “I would do it again in a
heartbeat.”
T
wo years ago Lauren Valentine ’02 went to a blood
drive. When she was there she noticed that they
were doing cheek swabs for bone marrow and stem
cell treatments. She never hesitated in doing a cheek
swab because she knew that she could potentially
help save a life.
Valentine volunteered to give a cheek swab, but
didn’t think that she would be called. However, in
November of 2013, she was notified that she was a
candidate. The very next month she received a letter
stating that she did not qualify. It was a letdown
for Valentine. Then this past February, Valentine
received another call stating that she was a match.
She was thrilled that she was going to be able to help
save someone’s life.
Valentine recalled the first blood drive that she ever
attended was at Villa. “There’s always a sense of
community when you’re in a close-knit school. At
Villa I learned that it was O.K. to give blood. Villa
helped to instill that in me.”
After a year has passed, the two will be able to
identify themselves to each other. Contact may
only occur if both the donor and recipient agree.
In this case, a consent form must be signed.
Valentine considers herself pretty lucky to have
been able to do the procedure. She said, “I am very
proud of myself.”
Valentine went to Ohio State University where she
earned a BFA in dance and a minor in business.
She is an actor in Los Angeles and also enjoys
teaching Pilates.

Shelby Kelly
’12 Receives
SSJ Spirit of
Courage Award
S
helby Kelly received the SSJ Spirit of Courage
Award in October. Throughout her life, Kelly has
encountered many trials and tribulations. She’s faced
abusive relationships, addiction, alcoholism, mental
illness, harassment, and poverty. She’s dealt with
loneliness, loss, and tragedy. Despite these challenges,
Kelly has found inner strength. Despite all of the
hardships she’s encountered, she expresses her talents
as an artist to capture, celebrate, and create beauty.
In her four years at VMA, Kelly participated in the Art-athon. Each year she would spend an evening at Villa
crafting original mixed media pieces and collecting
pledges to support local charities. She completed 24
pieces for her AP art portfolio. In addition, she served
as a member and officer of NAHS (National Art Honor
Society). As a senior, she was the recipient of the
“Outstanding Artist” award.
The SSJ Spirit of Courage recognition honors
individuals who have shown remarkable courage in
recovery from an accident, injury, illness, addiction,
economic adversity, or who have shown courage in
another way. The quiet, daily acts of ordinary people
who refuse to give up in the face of illness, injury, or
other adversity represent courage in its truest form.
Yet all too often, these people struggle alone with no
fanfare and little or no recognition for their courage.
They are the heart of the SSJ Spirit of Courage.
Congratulations, Shelby, on receiving this honor.
You are an inspiration to us all!
During her time at Villa, Kelly enjoyed spending time
helping others. She volunteered at numerous facilities,
including St. Mary’s Home East, the Erie Children’s
Museum, and the Emmaus Soup Kitchen. She also
spent time organizing “Sports Day” competitions for
first through fourth graders at a local elementary
school. For her senior project she organized “Blankets
of Hope”. Kelly and her classmates raised funds
to create and distribute blankets to more than 40
homeless families in the Erie area.
Kelly was humble about receiving this award. She
said, “All of us have moments in our lives that test
our courage; it is most important you remember that
courage is knowing that perfection is not real, and
that life will take its path to the unknown. It is for you
to continue that path and to never hesitate which
road to take, because in the end the man above will
never leave you nor forsake you; he will be by your
side through every moment, as he did for me. Things
will work itself out in the end as long as you have the
courage to do so.”

AJ Drexler ’80, President of
Campos Inc., Soars to Success
I
f you look up the word “leader” in the dictionary, don’t be surprised
if you see a photo of AJ Drexler ’80 beside it. She has come a long
way since her days at VMA and is the president and chief strategist
for her company, Campos Inc., in Pittsburgh.
Following graduation from Villa, AJ attended Boston College where
she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies. She
started her career in marketing in 1984, when she began working for
Tal, Inc. in Erie as an account executive. At the time, Tal, Inc. was the
top advertising agency. She left Tal Inc. and became the director of
marketing at the Regional Cancer Center from 1988-1991.
In 1991 she left Erie to move to Pittsburgh because Tal Inc. opened
an office there. She led the account service group until 1993.
Following that, she decided to start her own company, Big Picture
Communications, Inc., an advertising agency. She was the president
of the company, and she focused on research strategy and planning.
Drexler grew that company from a start-up to the fifth largest
advertising agency in Pittsburgh in 2013 as ranked by the Pittsburgh
Business Times. In September of 2013, Drexler left Big Picture and
went to Campos Inc. She is the title owner and president of the
company. Campos Inc. is a well-established brand-recognized
market research and strategy firm that supports clients with a full
spectrum of marketing and business planning services. Campos Inc. is the largest market research firm in
Pittsburgh and has been in business for 27 years. Drexler exclusively does research strategy and planning
there and she loves it. Drexler’s business is all about collaborating. She said, “I take pieces of unrelated
information and find the relationships between the two.” She is very passionate about her work. Campos
has two departments that do research–quantitative and qualitative. She has twelve full-time employees
and about 15-20 part-time employees. Campos has focus groups and one-on-one sessions to help clients
understand consumer reaction to products and marketing. Campos also does survey work and other types of
research.
Drexler credits her Villa education for giving her a great foundation to flourish. She said, “Villa taught me that I
could do anything. It gave me a sense of empowerment.” At Villa, Drexler experienced an environment where
girls were expected to become their best selves. She said, “From Sr. Moira throwing a 4th grade grammar
book at me freshman year and telling me to ‘start over!’ to just four years later becoming a confident and
competent writer for my college newspaper, the effects of my Villa education have always remained with
me.” She continued, “ The historical and political engagement that Judy Lynch exposed me to—both inside
and outside the classroom, as a teacher and as County Executive—had a profound impact on what I went on
to study in college…and ultimately the professional path I have chosen. Teachers like Judy taught me to look
for the connections between things—the historical and contemporary; the statistical and the tangible. And
ultimately, that kind of synthesis is what marketing strategists do. And I am very grateful for having had all the
opportunities that Villa prepared me for.”
When she is not working, Drexler sits on several boards and participates in a wide range of community
organizations. She is currently on the executive committee of the board for the Women’s Center & Shelter
in Pittsburgh. She is a member of the Women President’s Organization and the Allegheny Conference. She
is also the vice-chair of a YMCA camp board and past member of the YMCA of Metropolitan Pittsburgh
Board. In addition, Drexler participates with a number of other organizations that support women in life
and in business like Powerlink/Seton Hill’s e-Magnify, the Women & Girls Foundation, and Bethany House
Academy—a program that serves children in the hardest-hit neighborhood in Pittsburgh. In the past, she has
been active with school organizations as well as the Million Mom March and the Goods for Guns program.
She is married to Steve Drexler ’74 (CP). Together they have five children. Garrett 28, Alex 24, Gabriel 20,
Kathleen 19, and Madeline 16.

Bullying Prevention Program
Villa Receives Prestigious Certificates for Implementing
V
illa Maria Academy is one of eight schools to receive a
certificate of recognition for implementing the Olweus
Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP). Villa Maria Academy
is now a Certified Olweus School. In order to achieve
this status, Villa had to implement the Olweus Bullying
Prevention Program (OBPP). Obtaining certification for
the Olweus Quality Assurance System is not easy. Several
requirements had to be met before receiving the certificate.
Staff meetings were held for all employees of the school
twice a year to review and discuss bullying prevention
efforts. In addition, the Bullying Prevention Coordinating
Committee met monthly. Staff discussion groups were also
held at least five times per year with bullying prevention
and intervention as the main focus. All new employees had
to attend a one-day training session on the Olweus Bullying
Prevention Program. The Olweus Bullying Questionnaire
was administered, reviewed, and utilized
The school’s supervisory system was reviewed, and revisions were made. Teachers and other staff actively
used the four school rules against bullying and enforced them. Teachers also held class meeting once a week
on bullying and related topics. In preparation to become certified, bullying remained a standard topic in
regular discussions between teachers and students in order to assess student well-being as it relates to the
school social climate. Parents and guardians were informed about Villa’s bullying prevention efforts. School
personnel familiarized themselves with and used the procedures for on-the-spot interventions and follow-up
interventions. The staff practiced on-the-spot interventions annually. A Quality Plan highlighting how the
school was going to work to ensure the quality of actions to be taken was put in place. Villa held an event
each year to maintain student and staff enthusiasm and momentum around the principles and practices of
OBPP. In addition, VMA demonstrated efforts to engage the community in the OBPP and raise awareness
about bullying in the community.
Besides receiving the certificate for the OBPP, Villa also received a $1,250 check from the Highmark
Foundation for the school’s achievement in implementing evidence-based bullying prevention strategies.
Earlier this year, Villa was asked to share insight and lessons learned from its experiences implementing the
Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. Bullying prevention activities, training, and technical assistance based
on the Olweus Program were funded by the Highmark Foundation in partnership with the Center for Safe
Schools and the Center for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention at Windber Research Institute. Villa
Maria Academy was one of eight schools selected to receive an award for its success.
Sister Mary Drexler, Principal, is proud of everyone who worked hard to make this happen. She said,
“While receiving the monetary award from Highmark in the amount of $1,250 is wonderful, it is much more
meaningful to receive the OQAS award (Olweus Quality Assurance System), because it means that we have
worked extremely hard to address and prevent bullying within our school. This award is the result of a
team effort. Teachers and staff, along with administration, have worked diligently to write and implement a
program that has demonstrated measurable success.”

The Annual
Father-Daughter Brunch
T
he Villa community came together on Sunday, March 30 to put on the second
annual Father-Daughter Brunch. Approximately 200 guests were in attendance.
Fr. Scott Jabo, President, presided at Mass, which was held in the Villa auditorium,
followed by a delicious brunch in the cafeteria catered by Calamari’s (Marci Honard
’84, owner). During Mass, a special Father- Daughter blessing took place. Allburn’s
daffodil arrangements and centerpieces added a lively spring look to both the
auditorium and cafeteria. Each daughter received a dainty, white mini-carnation
corsage with Villa blue ribbon, each attached with a Miraculous Medal, upon arrival
before Mass. Allison Trocki ’14 designed the invitations. It was a beautiful day, and
it gave Villa students the opportunity to share the day with their fathers and remind
them of how very special they are.
Villa Celebrates Grandparents Day
For every shoulder they have given to lean on, every
cookie baked with love, every hug surrendered,
and all of the patience in the world, Villa students
honored their grandparents on November 6, during
VMA’s “Grandparents Day”.
Grandparents gathered with their grandchildren
in the auditorium for a brief MVP Show Choir
presentation. Following the presentation,
grandparents were treated to a gourmet luncheon
put on by Kathy Cirillo and her staff.

here are many traditions at Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria
Academy, but one that brings women out in droves year
after year is Harvest Gala. The event was held on October
2 at the Bayfront Convention Center. Women came together to celebrate the camaraderie
of women who support Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy. Many mothers,
grandmothers, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends gathered to represent both schools. This was
the 20th year for the event.
Villa Maria English teacher Lisa Chimenti-Foster served as the MC for the evening and kept
everyone laughing with her hilarious jokes and exuberant personality. Eighty-five elaborately
decorated, themed baskets lined the Convention Center for the ever-popular basket auction.
There was something for everyone to pick from.
During dinner, women sat on the edge of their chairs waiting eagerly for their name to be
called. The attendees were spoiled with a full-course sit-down dinner, dessert, and coffee.

There were several other chances to win something. Four raffles were held this year. One
featured a six-piece Vera Bradley set. Women could also take their chance on a leopard
ocelot Coach purse and wallet. They could also choose between a Prep or Villa custom-made
cornhole set, complete with cornhole bags coordinated to the school colors.
Ladies who did not win a basket or one of the raffles could not resist the temptation of the
gourmet bake sale which included scrumptious cakes, cookies, pies, cupcakes, breads, and
candies.
Jacob Ordos ’14 (CP) and Lizzie Rodriguez ’14 spoke to the audience about their experiences
at both schools over the years and thanked the women for their support.
Allburn Florist turned the Convention Center into a fall extravaganza with pumpkins and

PASC Conference
“The Luck of Leadership”
Judson Laipply,
creator of “Evolution

Villa Maria Academy was proud to host the 2014 PASC
REGION A Spring Conference: “The LUCK of LEADERSHIP”
(Loyal, Unique, Compassionate, Knowledgeable) on March 17.
Many unique activities and leadership workshops took place.
Approximately 250 delegates from 21 schools participated. All
delegates who attended the conference received a conference
t-shirt and lunch. VMA Student Council in partnership with
local service organizations provided active, hands-on, mindson community service activities. Villa welcomed motivational
speakers Jackie Jaros and Judson Laipply. Jackie Jaros is an
adviser and guidance counselor at Deer Lakes School, and
Judson Laipply is the creator of the "Evolution of Dance" and
has appeared on the “Ellen Show”.
VMA Holds “Trashion” Show
The Textile Design class at VMA held a “Trashion” Show in
December. Students were able to craft fashionable items
including dresses, skirts, and shoes. They used their creativity
to make couture from repurposed materials.
Shoes were also on display and have been in the past. This
year the students really wanted to focus on fashion. That’s
when Art teacher Mrs. Jessica Alesso decided to extend the
unit and do a fashion show.
The class also made pin cushions out of felt that looked like
cupcakes from the scraps of old sweaters and other wool
materials. It was definitely an eco-conscious unit on fashion!
Special thanks to Mrs. Aniko Walker, advisor, and the entire
Student Council who worked very hard to put on this event.

illa Maria Academy and Cathedral Prep MVP Program opened their 2013-2014 season with
the production of the classic Shakespearean comedy, As You Like It. This hilarious show
features the story of two unlikely lovers: Rosalind, the daughter of a banished Duke, and Orlando,
a poor laborer denied his share of his father’s inheritance by his older brother, Oliver.
After defeating the famous wrestler Charles, Orlando meets Rosalind, and the two immediately fall
deeply in love. Soon after this meeting though, Orlando flees the kingdom due to malice that the
evil new Duke, Frederick, holds against him. A short time later, Rosalind is also banished due to Duke Frederick’s distrust of her,
but she is accompanied in exile by Duke Frederick’s daughter, Celia, who has been Rosalind’s best friend since childhood. The
two girls decide it is best if they disguise themselves by dressing as men as they flee. Both Rosalind and Orlando escape to the
forest of Arden. In the forest, Rosalind and Orlando meet again; however Orlando does not recognize Rosalind in her disguise.
Many hilarious encounters between the two take place in the forest along with funny interactions with other banished men and
women also living in the forest. As the story moves on, Orlando saves Oliver from a hungry lioness and consequently reconciles
with him. Ironically, Oliver falls in love with Celia. In the end, Rosalind reveals her true identity to Orlando, who begs for her
hand in marriage. Along with Oliver and Celia and two other unlikely and amusing couples from the Forest of Arden, a festive
joint wedding takes place. It is shortly after this that the evil Duke Frederick gives up his old ways of tyranny and gives the
kingdom back to the good Duke, Rosalind’s father. The couples and the good Duke then travel back to the kingdom where they
all will live happily together.
Working As You Like It and playing the role of Orlando was a pleasure and honor for me. Being new to theatre, I relished the
opportunity to take on a challenging and rewarding character like Orlando. I loved every minute of it. Having an extremely
talented and dedicated cast around me made every rehearsal a memorable, enjoyable, and exhausting experience. With all the
hard work and preparation put into this show and the many talented thespians, it is no wonder that the Cathedral Prep and Villa
Maria Academy MVP Program stands high above other theatre programs in the area.

liver Twist, also known as the boy who wanted more, is an orphan boy who was sold
by his caretakers, Mr. Bumble and Widow Corney, to funeral directors. He escapes
the Sowerberry funeral home and is found by the Artful Dodger and taken in by a gang
of thieves lead by Fagin. While Oliver is staying with Fagin’s gang, he meets Nancy and
her best friend, Bet. Oliver learns that these people are more like a family, and they would
do anything for each other. As Dodger is taking Oliver out to pick a pocket or two, Oliver
gets caught robbing Mr. Brownlow, a wealthy old man. Dodger runs and tells Fagin about
Oliver’s capture. Fagin and Bill Sikes, Nancy’s deceitful boyfriend, decide to kidnap Oliver
to protect themselves from
being arrested. Nancy
and Bill bring him back
to Fagin, but Nancy sneaks out and tells Mr. Brownlow she
will return Oliver to him. Mr. Brownlow realizes that Oliver
is his great-nephew after a confrontation with Mr. Bumble.
Suspecting that Nancy is up to something, Bill follows her as
she sneaks Oliver out and clubs her to death. He then grabs
Oliver and runs off. After Nancy’s body is discovered, Bill
appears at the top of a bridge, threatening to kill Oliver. Two
policemen shoot Bill and save Oliver, who is reunited with
Mr. Brownlow.
This show was staged in the H. David Bowes Auditorium
from January 30 to February 2. The school performance on
Thursday morning was attended by many grade school students from the Erie diocese. The rest of the weekend was packed with
family, friends, alumni, and faculty of Prep and Villa.

Leader of the Pack
T
By Brendan Flanagan ’16 (CP)
he Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Theater MVP department recently put on
Leader of the Pack. It followed the life of Doo Wop star Ellie Greenich and her
rise to stardom in the 1960s. Songs such as “Be My Baby,” “Then He Kissed Me,”
“Hanky Panky,” and “River Deep Mountain High” had the audience singing along with
the cast.
The cast was full of very talented voices, really highlighting the girls. Rachel Lyons
killed it in the role of Darlene Love with her powerful voice that brought chills to
the audience. Kristina Tishenko and Maddie Nawrocki also had major leads and
had amazing solos. The entire cast gave all they had every night to make the show a
success.
Mrs. Mary Beth Hoag once again blessed us with her wonderful costume talents. There
was a costume change almost every scene, which made the show ten times better. The
costumes matched the clothing worn in the 1960s and were appealing to the eye. They
complemented the set perfectly. The energy grew every night the play was performed. For only having three weeks
to rehearse and make it perfect, it turned out spectacular. The stage crew took center
stage at the end of the show during the bows. The entire audience got into it and were
clapping and signing along at the end.

Imagine being told that you had an incurable heart disease and,
if you did not receive a transplant, you would die. This is what
Lindsey Allgeier’s doctor told her. Allgeier, cousin of Ms. Meghan
Furhman, spoke to Fuhrman’s biology classes about her heart
transplant and C.O.R.E. (Center for Organ Recovery and Education).
Allgeier received her transplant on July 24, 2001. Prior to receiving
her heart she lived at the Cleveland Clinic for three months. She
received a phone call at midnight the day before her surgery. The
heart she received arrived from Texas at noon the very next day.
Her heart came from a 16-year-old girl who was killed in a car
accident.
Allgeier spoke to the classes about the importance of being an
organ donor. She said, “One donor can save up to fifty people.”
She expressed how grateful she is to have a new heart.
Following her transplant Allgeier was asked to be on the Tyra

Prep and Villa
Students Get
a Jump Start
on College
with Gannon
University’s
1 + 3 Program
Bishop Lawrence Persico looks on as Dr. Keith Taylor, President of Gannon University; Father Scott Jabo, President of Cathedral
Preparatory School and Villa Maria Academy; and Dr. Carolyn Masters sign the 1 + 3 agreement.
Gannon University, Cathedral Preparatory School, and Villa Maria
Academy have come together to provide students the opportunity
of accelerating their education. Gannon University’s Early College
1+3 Program affords students the opportunity to pre-plan their
college careers by offering accelerated 1+3 bachelor degree
programs and 1+3+1 master degree programs through the use
of existing articulation-evaluation of credit agreements and Dual
Enrollment courses.
Gannon worked closely with Cathedral Preparatory School and
Villa Maria Academy to align course requirements and plan an
Early College 1+3 course sequence. The University also worked
with twelve University programs that each developed a course of
study for completion of a major in three years. This means that
students will have a clear path to degree completion and can start
earning an income sooner.
Prep and Villa students who will be juniors in the 2014-15
academic year will be eligible for the full 1+3 Program. Gannon’s
existing articulation agreements and Dual Enrollment courses will
continue to be offered.
Father Scott Jabo, President, is thrilled to offer this program to
our students. He said, “The 1+3 program is one more indication
of the very strong and long-standing relationship that Cathedral
Prep and Villa Maria share with Gannon University. Not only does
this program provide a wonderful opportunity for our students
to accelerate their education, but it will be a huge cost savings for
our families. I am grateful that Gannon University acknowledges
and trusts in the excellent college preparatory education that
our students receive at Prep and Villa so as to offer our students
this exceptional opportunity. This program and our relationship
also shows the commitment and unified effort of Prep, Villa and
Gannon to support the continuation and promotion of Catholic
education in our area. I speak for all of us at Prep and Villa in saying
‘thank you’ to Gannon University for making this possible. 1+3+1
equals an excellent opportunity for our students.”
Program Requirements
Students must complete a specified combination of articulationevaluation credits and credits completed via the Dual Enrollment
program prior to entering as a full-time degree-seeking student.
Students will be advised as to the appropriate required courses by
their guidance counselor in consultation with Gannon University’s
Assistant Director of Admissions/Dual Enrollment Coordinator.
Students must meet programmatic admission criteria to be
admitted into the major. Further, once enrolled as a student at
Gannon, students must follow the designated curriculum plan to
ensure completion of the degree in three years and meet all other
degree requirements. Students must successfully complete a
minimum of 128 credits for a bachelor’s degree.
Students must complete the prescribed ArticulationEvaluation Credits
• Students must complete 4 full years (4 credits) of honors or
Advanced Placement courses.
• All courses must have been completed at Erie Catholic
Preparatory School with a grade of B or better.
• Articulation credits are not able to be transferred to other
institutions.
• Articulation credits will not be used in determining a student’s
Gannon grade point average.
• Some articulation credits may be used as elective credits and
may not be used to fulfill program requirements
Dual Enrollment Credits:
• Grades below a C in a Dual Enrollment course will not be
accepted.
• Each transcript will be evaluated individually by the assistant for
student records and the appropriate chair/ program director.

Although Lujbli has competed in many shows, this was her first
with Lime. She said, “I was nervous for our flat classes since Lime
does not like horses behind him. I was in two classes where there
were other horses. Lime did not give one sign of discomfort and
kept trotting on like he had been doing is kind of shows his whole
life!”
There were times when Lujbli wanted to give up, and she
considered getting rid of Lime. She thought that she was a failure,
but this has been one year that she will never forget.
Lime’s show name (that he so rightfully deserves) is Pain Is
Temporary, inspired by the “Pain Is Temporary” speech given by
Eric Thompson and the song “Every Storm Runs out of Rain” by
Gary Allen.
On May 18 Lujbli and Lime will compete in their first outdoor show
at the Erie Hunt and Saddle Club in Edinboro.
This whole experience taught Lujbli one very important thing. Her
instructor kept telling her not to give up. Lujbli said, “Just because
someone thinks something is impossible doesn’t mean that it
really is.”
Hannah Lujbli’s Perseverance

“It’s not enough for a rider to know how to ride; she must know
how to fall.” (Mexican Proverb)
Hannah Lujbli ’16 knows about both. She bought her horse,
Lime, a 7-year-old, 16.2hh, dark bay pure-bred thoroughbred
ex-racehorse in April of 2013. One month after she had him,
she received some devastating news. Her veterinarian told her
that Lime had chipped knees (when a piece of bone comes off
the horse’s leg). Lujbli was crushed when she was told that she
wouldn’t even be able to place a saddle on Lime’s back, let alone
jump with him.

VMA Holds Annual
Ring Ceremony
The Senior Homecoming Court.
Whether it’s old and has been passed down for many generations
or is shiny and new, class rings are symbolic of one’s high school
memories and serve as a reminder to the wearers of their
roots later on in life. Juniors at VMA reached that milestone
and received their rings during the ring ceremony held in the
auditorium in November. As their junior year winds down, they
paused and reflected on their past, with the anticipation of
becoming a senior.
The ceremony began with the lights out in the auditorium. The
junior class walked in carrying lit candles. Each student carried
their candle on stage and placed it in giant candelabra to signify
unity.
Charlie Angelone & Megan Cooper.
Hannah Easly & Sean Taylor.
Principal Sister Mary Drexler ’63 gave the opening prayer. In her
prayer, she reminded the attendees of what the ceremony means.
“We gather this morning to celebrate the long-standing tradition
of ring ceremony…a ceremony that binds together in unity and
friendship this junior class. Bless these students who will receive
their rings today. Bless their success as students, challenge them
to live their faith in you, and support and strengthen them as they
serve their neighbor with compassion and generosity.”
A special slide show, put together by the students, highlighted
the “sisterhood” theme. Villa students have an underlying bond of
sisterhood that begins at VMA and continues for life.
Mrs. Lisa Chimenti Foster and Ms. Meghan Dibble distributed the
rings to the girls.
Sr. Mary Drexler blessed the rings that symbolize the students are
advancing and are on their way to becoming adults.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the cafeteria for
the girls and their families. Although some girls were wearing
new rings, a few had on their grandmother’s ring or even their
mother’s ring which was passed down to them.
VMA rings are much more than a status symbol. When the girls
look down at them, they will remember their time at VMA and the
many memories that go along with it.

Prep & Villa Students March for Life
Students from Prep and Villa took to the streets of Washington,
D.C. to “March for Life” on January 21 and 22. Both groups joined
forces with people from all over the world to gather to be a voice
for the voiceless, including the unborn, those living in poverty,
the abused, and anyone who has been marginalized by the rest of
society. January 22 marked the anniversary of the landmark 1973
Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized
abortion in our country.
The trip began with travel during a winter storm. The group
arrived safely at a parish in Virginia where they stayed. The next
day everyone went to Mass and breakfast at the parish, then
boarded the bus for the Metro station with an eye-opening visit at
the Holocaust Museum. After that, they went to lunch in the Old
Post Office and then took part in the march on the National Mall.
The bitter cold day was full of sacrifices but worth it. From waiting
to get into the museum to the actual march, there were many
opportunities to be thankful for life and to understand life as a gift.
Prep and Villa students will continue to take a stand for life when
the lives of innocent people are increasingly threatened.
Holocaust survivor Margit Meissner shares her story with students.
Holocaust Speaker Visits Villa
National Museum Holocaust speaker Margit Meissner shared
her amazing story with the students of Villa Maria Academy on
November 6. She was born in Austria to a wealthy Jewish family,
Margit was raised in Prague, Czechoslovakia. When Hitler annexed
Austria in 1938, Margit, at age 16, was sent to Paris to be out of
harm’s way. When France capitulated, she fled Paris on a bicycle
to avoid the German troops. Due to her father’s past investments
in the Congo, she was granted a visa with which she obtained
Spanish and Portuguese transit visas to escape France.
Miraculously reunited with her mother who had come to France
and then been interned, mother and daughter fled on foot across
the French-Spanish border only to be jailed in Spain. Eventually
Margit and her mother made it to the United States. She soon
married a GI and followed him to Army posts across the U.S.
After the war she went with him to the Nuremberg war crimes
trials where she was employed by the U.S. Army of occupation,
reducating Hitler youth. When her husband joined the U.S.
Foreign Service, Margit lived in France, Hungary, and Egypt,
before divorcing him and returning to the U.S. After a stint as a
story analyst in Hollywood, Margit became a businesswoman,
manufacturing children’s clothes in San Francisco. Eventually
she became a dress design teacher and an elementary school
teacher in Argentina. She worked for 20 years in the Montgomery
County, (MD), school system as program planner and advocate
for educating handicapped children. Upon her retirement in
1992, Margit became a volunteer in antiviolence programs. She
interrupted that activity when her children insisted she write an
autobiography.
After Margit’s Story was launched, she became a volunteer at the
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum where she translates
from Czech into English at the Archives and acts as a tour guide in
the Permanent Exhibit.

Relay Team Places 18th in National
Championship in NYC
The VMA girls 4x800m relay team of Grace Trucilla, Carlee
Constable, Alison Carson, and Claire Brown competed in the New
Balance Indoor National Track and Field Championship in NYC
recently. The girls qualified to compete in the elite section of this
relay. They shattered their previous school record of 9:33.69 with
a new record of 9:27.54, good enough for an 18th place overall.
Athletes from all 50 states as well as Canada took part in this
prestigious meet.
Therese Brown, VMA Head Cross Country Coach, is very thankful
as well. She said, “Our team has survived and has thrived -- thanks
in large part to being able to use these treadmills most days aside
from our weekly trip out to an indoor track at Spire in Ohio.”
Brown is thankful that her team has the fitness center to take
advantage of. She said, “Without the fitness center, Prep and
Villa would not have been able to field our middle distance and
distance corps during this year’s indoor track season. Due to the
extreme cold temperatures and snow-covered roads, we were
unable to train outside.
In order to race longer
distances, it is imperative
that we are able to train
at longer distances. Four
to five days a week, we
had those ten treadmills
going nonstop after
schoo–even training in
shifts to fit in workouts for
all the boys and girls.”
Coaches at different meets would tell Brown about their teams’
inability to train properly through the winter. Brown said, “As a
coach, I was so very thankful for the amazing resources available
to our athletes. Thanks to our fitness room, our middle distance
group set new school records, medaled at states, and are well
prepared to springboard into a successful spring track season for
Prep and Villa.”
Brown takes coaching her team very seriously. She said, “I cannot
thank the donors of our fitness room enough. I can come up with
workout plans, race strategies, etc. But all of that means nothing
if the kids have nowhere to train. I feel like we lived in the fitness
room this winter using the treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and weight
equipment.”
Track Teams Benefit from Fitness Center
The Artic Vortex spoiled a lot of runners’ winters with the extreme
plummeting temperatures and massive amounts of snow. The
Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy track and cross county
teams didn’t let Mother Nature rain on their parade. The teams
benefitted from the VMA Fitness Center this winter, while other
teams struggled to continue training.
The VMA Fitness Center features treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent
bikes, and strength training equipment. The students were
grateful to have such a beautiful facility to condition in.
Swimmers Set Marks
This winter has been especially challenging for students from
the western part of the state due to incredible cold and so much
snow. Head Track Coach Chet Moffett said, “The fitness center
has been very beneficial to our indoor track and field team; we
don’t have indoor facilities at Prep, and the fitness center allows
our distance runners train through inclement weather. We are so
appreciative of the athletic administration at the school and the
faculty and staff of Villa Maria Academy who sacrifice their time to
allow our young men and women an opportunity to practice.”
After losing ten swimmers to graduation, some may have
assumed this season would be a rebuilding year for the Villa
Swim Team. However, adding ten incoming freshmen to a
strong nucleus of returning letter winners, which included
two previous state qualifiers and team record holders (Abby
Fessler and Abby Quinn), helped to keep Villa a force in
District 10.The Victors swam to a 10-3 record, a second place
finish at the North East Invitational, and a second place

Freshman Kathleen Lynch made a statement very early on
by breaking the school’s 100 backstroke record at the first
dual swim meet of the season. She swam a time of 1:01.23,
breaking the previous mark of 1:02.87, set by Alice Tullio in
2012. She continued to lower the record throughout the
season and swam her fastest time with a win at the North
East Invitational in a time of 57.80. The District 10 meet
saw the 200 medley relay team of Kathleen Lynch, Payton
Taylor, Abby Quinn and Abby Fessler kick off the meet by
setting a new school record with a time of 1:51.96 and
automatically qualified for the PIAA State Championship
with a second place finish. Lynch followed that up with
a record-breaking performance in the 200 free, setting
a new mark of 2:00.73 (previous record: 2:00.80, Jamie
Redlawsk, 2009). The 400 free relay team of Jayne Reichel,
Abby Quinn, Abby Fessler, and Kathleen Lynch concluded
the meet with a second place finish and automatically
qualified for the state meet as well. Lynch qualified for the
state meet in the 100 backstroke based on her time.
