In the late 1920’s, Mrs. Mollie Schlesinger’s greatest passions were taking care of her daughter Betty and her son Jules, as well as serving her husband Mr. Joseph Schlesinger a delicious hot meal when he got home from work. One night Mr. Schlesinger said if he opened a restaurant that served Mrs. Schlesinger’s chicken in the pot, people would flock there. Mrs. Schlesinger said, “Then do it, because if you don’t, you’ll always regret it. I’ll help you with the cooking.” So in 1930, with modest savings and a small loan from Mrs. Schlesinger’s father, Schlesinger’s Luncheonette in West New York, New Jersey was born. Schlesinger’s opened at 5AM to serve the workers on the first shift at the nearby Ideal Laundry plant. It stayed opened till midnight to accommodate workers on the late shift. Having a father with his own soda fountain made Betty popular with her classmates. They would go there for Schlesinger’s famed egg creams. In June 1950, Betty Schlesinger married Edward Domb and had two sons, Peter and Allan. In 2010 Allan opened Schlesinger’s Restaurant and Delicatessen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today, you can enjoy all of Mrs. Schlesinger’s specialties for business luncheons, holiday meals and family brunches. All of the food is made and served in the tradition of Mrs. Schlesinger — with only the highest quality ingredients, attention to the smallest details and lots of passion.
