When they were first introduced to the market, the glass in the finish was perfectly round and looked like colored BB’s. The early manufacturers combined glass bead with standard pool finish ingredients; white portland cement, dyes, and additives. As you can imagine, the combination of perfectly round glass and cement didn’t create a tight bond. While the finishes were beautiful, smooth and shiny, they didn’t hold up for very long and consumers were left with a very expensive mess. The beads would fall out, and the cement/plaster would begin to chip away. Recently, we were informed that some other manufacturers were having some success mixing the irregular shaped glass bead with other aggregates. We decided it was time to revisit the R&D process. We sourced a suitable supplier for a high quality irregular glass bead and began testing different aggregate and glass bead blends. After several formula mixes failed testing by our CL Industries’ test applicator, we found one that worked. We combined our SunStone Pearl pebble finish with irregular shaped, iridescent glass bead. After finding the right ratio of pebble to glass bead, we’re happy to announce we have a new product! Over the years, manufacturers tested different formulas and eventually found that using an irregular shaped glass bead led to a stronger bond. In our R&D department at CL Industries, we tested the original round glass bead as well as the irregular bead. We were not thrilled with the results, and decided not to release a glass bead finish until we found a formula combination that exceeded our quality control standards. SunStone Pearl Ice combines the durability, stain resistance, and longevity of our pebble finishes with the added glimmer of iridescent glass bead. We are releasing 8 beautiful new colors blended with a 70% to 30 % pebble to glass bead ratio. If you’re looking for a finish that has the wow factor, look no further than SunStone Pearl Ice! Marty and his awesome crew at Laguna Pool Plastering recently made the switch from SG&M Products to CL Industries. Since the switch they’ve been fantastic customers and active supporters and contributors of our Social Media. They even went so far as to add our branding to their box truck. We couldn’t think of a better person to field our very first “Ask an Applicator.” I have your Krystalkrete Blue pool finish on my pool & spa. The pool was resurfaced about 8 years ago. I now have extensive blackish grey staining/streaking on the pool & spa surfaces. My question - #1 How do I get the surface cleaned and restore the Krystalkrete Blue pool finish? #2 How do I prevent/minimize in the future? Would really appreciate your help on this. Marty responds; “To me it sounds like he has an algae problem. It’s hard to tell for sure without seeing pictures, but the only time I’ve seen black on a pool surface is from something growing on it. If it were my pool I would drain it, acid wash, and pressure wash it. Let it sit for a day before filling it back up. Make sure you fill the pool entirely before you stop the water or you’ll run the risk of having a water ring around the finish.” We are often asked technical questions regarding water chemistry and staining issues related to our finishes. Many of these inquiries come to us through our website. Each quarter we’ll have one of our Authorized Applicators tackle a question. Our first question comes from Walter in the Midwest, he asks; “To keep the algae from coming back it’s important to maintain proper water chemistry and water movement. You can take a water sample to your local pool supply company and they’ll usually test it for free.” Click on this link for proper water chemistry http://clindustries.com/quick-tips-proper-water-chemistry/ The Entertainer With a shift in seasons, we are approaching the most active months for outdoor entertainment. Summer plays hosts to at least three major ‘outdoor holidays’ in the U.S. (Memorial Day Weekend, 4th of July, and Labor Day). With the days becoming longer, the stage is set for some quality poolside festivities. At CL Industries, we noticed a trend that we dare not ignore. The trend is that many homeowners are investing in an outdoor living space that is focused on entertaining. The art of entertaining is not new, however we decided to have some fun qualifying the necessary ingredients to become “The Entertainer.” With some careful consideration, we decided that a pebble finish was essential for creating “The Entertainer.” We chose the “SunStone Pearl” line of finishes considering it’s one of the most durable and longlasting finishes on the market. We figured most people want the good times to never end. We can certainly relate to those friends, neighbors, and family members that take entertaining to the next level. They love to be the host with the most! We hope you enjoy this web clip and get inspired to take your outdoor entertainment experience to new heights this summer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKg0xyvsB1g DISCLAIMER: The 5 ingredients are only meant to be entertaining. A swimming pool and a good attitude are really all you need to be “The Entertainer.” SunStone Pearl will just keep the party going for years and years.
