Wood Gasification – In English
The conversion of wood fuel into a flammable gas that
can be used as a fuel to provide Energy in different forms
-Heat in a boiler
-Electricity using a generator
-Transport using an internal combustion engine
Heat using a wood gasification boiler
-Flammable gas produced at 400°C
-Gas is re-burnt at 1200°C
-Energy heats water
-Water heats radiators/underfloor

Gasification in an open fire?
Uncontrolled primary and secondary air
Minimal amount of gasification
Flammable gases lost to chimney
Approx 85%
Heat Losses
to Chimney
Very low efficiency levels
Lots of ash and charcoal
Secondary Air
Approx 15%
Radiant & Convection
Heat to Room

Gasification in a stove?
Manual control of primary & secondary air
Gasification occurs at top of stove
Medium level of gasification occurs
Inefficient heat exchanging
Reduced ash & charcoal
Secondary Air

Gasification is Different to Slow Burning
Wood Gasification Boiler
Slow Burning Wood Boiler
Forced draft
Automatic primary/secondary air valves
Flue gas monitoring
Fast hot burn (1200°C)
No tar or charcoal build up
Twin burning chambers
Accumulator tank required
Single fill of wood per day
Timed heating zones
Uses approx. 40% less wood
Natural draft
Manual primary/secondary air valves
No monitoring
Slow cool burn (800°C)
Tar/charcoal build up
Single burning chamber
No accumulator tank required
Must burn when heating is required
No timers possible
Uses more wood

The Argument for Woody Biomass
Uncoupling of agri/forestry land for energy crops - approx. 110m hectares in EU27
25 Exajoules per annum from wood or miscanthus for home heat production.
Equates to 1/3 of the ENTIRE energy consumption for EU-27 states
Growing oil crops for transport sector on same land only produces 1/7 of energy needs
Therfore - attractive, convenient and efficient wood heating systems are required in order
to encourage the correct use of biofuels
ONCE MORE - Using agricultural land to provide for home heating, is 2.5 times better than
using the same land to produce liquid bio fuel from rapeseed or corn to power our cars

So……………….
What opportunities does gasification
present in Ireland??
Evergreen Energy Ltd
Wood Log Gasification Boilers For the Home Owner
Home heating using a fuel that has the lowest fossil fuel input of
any biomass fuel
A carbon neutral home heating fuel
Local and sustainable supply of home heating fuel
Dramatic savings on home heating costs
A convenient heating system that can be setup to run with
timers and room thermostats
A highly efficient boiler system that uses up to 40% less wood than a standard slow
burning boiler or multi fuel stove.
Evergreen Energy Ltd
Wood Log Gasification Boilers For Wood Suppliers
An unexploited local market for high quality split
logs
Logs cut to 500mm and split to 200mm mean
less handling and lower cots for the producer
Lower costs mean that price breaks can be
offered to bulk customers
Gasification boilers will automatically adjust the burning process to suit the quality of
wood, this means reduced drying times – felled in March, dried during Summer, start
burning in October
A typical gasification boiler owner will use approx 5 tonnes of split logs per year
(equivalent 6 – 7 m of wood) – based on an average sized house with average heating
demands.
