AT MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
Mission San Juan Capistrano completed a year of great challenge
and continued purpose as it served as a resource to the community
and the world at large.
With more people facing uncertain financial futures, loss in real estate
values, and the prospect or reality of unemployment, the opportunity
for respite and renewal at the Mission became even more relevant
and necessary these past twelve months.
Yet despite these difficult times, last year was a year of new
programming, growth, innovation, and impact. The Foundation and
its supporters, and members of the Mission Preservation Foundation
Society found new ways to continue to forge ahead to ensure that the
careful stewardship and oversight of this mission continued at same
levels as previous years. The gardens continued to bloom, students
continued to learn, and the Mission stood strong despite fluctuating
attendance.
It is during this time of annual reporting that we can look back
together and celebrate the significant accomplishments of the past
year. With the leadership of the Mission Preservation Foundation,
the hard working Mission staff, and the dedicated volunteers, history
continued to be made.
Your direct support makes a long lasting impact to the sustainability,
relevance, access, and preservation of this most important community
resource for generations to come.
In 2008-2009 we celebrate that the Mission remained a treasured
resource to the community and a place where life long memories
were made on a daily basis.

MOVING FORWARD IN ACHIEVEMENTS
FOR 2008-2009
The Foundation celebrated the completion of the three year “Serra
Chapel Conservation Project” including the Sacristy rehabilitation
project, lighting upgrades, conservation of the historic silver
processional pieces, and safeguarding the historic baptismal font.
The Foundation welcomed three new board members to the Mission
Preservation Foundation including Peter Bastone, Lula Halfacre,
and Madeline Swinden.
Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the leadership of the Gala
Committee and the Mission Preservation Foundation hosted its
best attended and most successful “Romance of the Mission” benefit
gala.
Thanks to the support of the Orange County Community Foundation,
the Mission Preservation Foundation resurrected the 100 year old
Landmarks Club at Mission San Juan Capistrano to secure estate
planning support for the future of the Mission.
Membership in the Mission Preservation Society continued to grow,
and a new membership record was achieved.
Thanks to Ortega Gift Shop’s continued support, the Mission
celebrated the grand opening of its California Missions Resource
Studio for students featuring information about all 21 California
missions.
The Mission expanded its audio tour programming to include “Saved
by the Mission Bell: A Child’s Journey through California History”
which has since been enjoyed by over 6,000 children.
The award winning “Voices of the Mission” audio tour was also
expanded to include five languages, making it available in English,
Spanish, French, German, and Vietnamese.

5th Annual Mariachi Festival
COMMUNITY EVENTS HOSTED 2008-2009
SHARING OUR PRESERVATION AS A PURPOSE
During tough economic times, the Mission provided free with
admission Sunday performances of guitar, dance, and barbershop
quartet music to the public in the gorgeous Mission setting.
Working closely with community leaders throughout Southern
California, the Mission hosted an Italian Celebration of the
Swallows Return.
The Mission developed the Ladies of Lincoln's Era exhibit featuring
the story of women during the Civil War period and public
programming which included an American Girl Doll event
and lecture.
In conjunction with Arts OC’s Imagination Celebration organizers,
the Mission hosted Carp Diem showcasing the meaning, place, and
importance of koi fish at Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Celebrating its 5th year the Mariachi Festival brought visitors
from throughout Southern California to enjoy a music festival
with the support of the Thomas J. and Erma Jean Tracy Family
Foundation.
Music Under the Stars 2008
The concert series was, once again, a hit providing locals with
a unique venue to dance to vintage music under the stars. Most
concerts sold out and raised much needed funding to ensure the
continued access and preservation of the Mission.
A first ever solemn remembrance of our Acjachemen community
with the members of the local Juañeno Band of Mission Indians
recalling those who lost their lives in the earthquake of 1812 was
held.
Four art shows were held for Mission members and the public.
Among exhibits was the first ever “all-female” art show with proceeds
donated by artists to help preserve and maintain the Mission.

STRIVING WITH PURPOSE
Twitter
Mission SJC joined the world’s favorite social media network.
To date, the Mission’s twitter account has over 400 followers with more
every week.
Email Campaigns
Mission SJC launched monthly and bi-monthly email announcements
to members and those who visit the Mission, keeping them updated on
exhibits, news and events at Mission San Juan Capistrano.
Free Garden Tours
The Gardening Angels initiated a “free with admission” garden tour
program for every Wednesday.
Free Weaving Demonstrations
Mission’s volunteers continued to provide free loom weaving and Native
American basket weaving demonstrations.

Inspired Learning
The Mission welcomed over 78,729 students who also participate in
education programming provided by one of our education partners
such as the Discovery Science Center, Jacque Nunez’s Journeys to
the Past, and the Ocean Institute.
Curiosity Carts
“Touch the past exhibits” were located throughout the site featuring
replica artifacts from early California for hands on learning by
students.
Scout Badge Program Initiated
The Education Department introduced a Mission San Juan
Capistrano Scout Badge program for Scout troops.
Hosting Second Saturdays
Living History events manned by volunteers were hosted monthly
and teachers were given free admission on these days.
“A” Report Card
Over 100 teacher surveys were received rating the Mission student
field trip experience an overall “A” average rating.
Discount Programs for Teachers and Education Department
Introduced Free Mission Matters Programs and admission discounts
for teachers booking and taking their field trips in the fall.
Improving website applications
The Mission introduced a Teachers Page and Students Corner on the
website, and developed free teacher planners, lesson guides, student
stories, and learning section.
California Mission Resource Studio
With Ortega Gift Shop’s support we unveiled our first interactive
studio for teachers, students, and parents to work on assignments
and projects that involve resources on all 21 California Missions.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND PARTNERS
INSPIRING IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVATION
Student Educational Field Trips and Programs
The Mission served as a place of inspired learning about early
California history, its indigenous people, and even science.
Education programming directly provided about 55,000 students
and adults with a field trip tour. This past year’s programming
featured Mission Matters coursework providing such experiences
as adobe brick making, hide branding, and rope making. Our
summer programs also included ceramics, drop in programs for
crafts, games and storytelling, and camping sleepovers as well.
The education offerings also featured the collaborative learning
opportunities through partnerships with Journeys to the Past
Native American storytelling, the Discovery Science Center’s
Making the Grade science education, Dana Point’s Ocean
Institute, and ZOOMARS Petting Zoo Education programming
aligns with the State course work and curriculum standards for
Social Science and Science for 4th grade students.
Of the grand total visiting the Mission, another 21,000 also
participated in a Mission education program or special class.
The Adopt-A-Class Program
Mission San Juan Capistrano also continued to find ways to
ensure that access for student field trips to low income students
remained available through its Adopt-A-Class Scholarship
Program. In 2008-2009 education programs were enjoyed by
the under served of Southern California through the support
of private donors. This donor supported field trip program
received $10,109 to provide 913 students with free admissions,
docent guided tours, Passport Explorers, transportation, and
participation in an education program class during the 2008-2009
school year. It was a year when children especially needed this
kind of support.

THE ORGANIZATION
A TEAM WITH A PURPOSE
The Mission San Juan Capistrano organization is comprised of 36
hard working and dedicated full time staff.
Specialists in the field of conservation, architectural preservation,
graphics, information technology, and public relations are also
retained as needed. In total, about $1.5 million in salary costs is
needed to keep the Mission open, accessible, vibrant, and safe, 363
days a year.
Working at the Mission is a privilege and an honor. Employees
recognize the unique stewardship responsibility they have in
executing their daily responsibilities. A careful balance between
creating new programs while reducing impacts is sought as the
senior management team identifies and carries out priorities and
objectives from year to year.

Employees at Mission San Juan Capistrano share a sense of purpose
and willingness to do whatever it takes to keep the Mission looking
beautiful, preserved, and relevant for future generations to come.
They do so with joy and positive energy knowing that their work
matters to all who visit.
In terms of measuring success, the Mission organization uses a
metric that extends beyond just the important financial facts and
figures. Success daily is measured in the positive comments received
and the heartfelt thanks from those who visit. Employees see their
jobs as caretaking a place that serves as a cultural, spiritual, and
educational home to many.

PEOPLE WITH PASSION
In 2008-2009, our 300 volunteers devoted 6,760 hours, averaging
over 563 hours a month to keeping the Mission a vibrant place of
inspiration, education and preservation.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF
PRESERVATION AT WORK
Preservation is a top priority for Mission San Juan Capistrano.
As the art and science of historic preservation has developed,
efforts must more carefully reflect respect for the past and in all
ways be reversible, and be based on careful thinking of the past
treatments applied to buildings and artifacts. Future generations
of preservationists must have access to well maintained records
so that they know how to carry on the future preservation
projects. Preservation is defined as the stewardship of this site
and its structures. Preservation also means sharing information
with the public to generate a learning opportunity about how to
steward the site, and prescribe treatments that allow for future
generations to enjoy the Mission. Part of the preservation effort
requires managing events so that they do not generate damage.
Preservation also involves sharing information about the site,
or interpreting, so that those who visit leave with a deeper
appreciation for various significant points in California history.

Preservation of the Mission is funded entirely by private donations,
membership, or grants. Income from the gate admissions do not fund the
preservation of the site, but rather keep the Mission open for the public.
This makes all of the accomplishments from the past year even more
meaningful, when it is realized that gifts and donations directly translate
into a measurable, immediate difference on the Mission grounds that will be
appreciated for generations to come.
