Hi there everyone!
My name is Parker and I have a cool new job as
the official mascot for the New Tecumseth Parks, Recreation
and Culture Department.
I have met some of you already and look forward to meeting more
of you in the coming months.
Everywhere I go I meet more of my fans, shake hands, high five, sign
autographs and get my picture taken with you. It’s so much fun! I can
drop into any Recreation program or event when I want and get to join in all
the fun. Hey, I even get invited to some of your events.
I am pleased to hear that so many of you enjoy your parks, facilities and programs.
I love to hear from you, so drop me a note with your comments, suggestions or just to say hi!
I will be sure to be attending camp and learning to swim this summer. See you there!

Benefits to Personal Health
• Physical Activity helps manage blood pressure, cholesterol levels, increases life expectancy, improves cardiovascular and
respiratory functions, increases muscular strength and endurance and reduces rates of chronic illnesses.
• A healthy individual is less likely to be sick – saving frequent medical visits, additional costs and absenteeism from the workplace.
(Alberta Government website: Alberta Community Development)
• Recreation provides an ideal opportunity to explore and develop a full range of abilities.
• Psychological Benefits. Recreation promotes self-esteem, reduces stress and promotes a positive lifestyle.
Benefits to Communities
• Parks and recreation opportunities are essential for strengthening and maintaining a healthy
community.
• Recreation brings neighbours together, encourages safer, cleaner neighbourhoods and creates a
livelier community atmosphere.
• Sport improves social cohesion. Sport participants experience a high degree of interaction with
other individuals, which improves interpersonal relationships, establishes the basis for trust and builds
teamwork skills that generate gains in social cohesion.
• Recreation reduces self-destructive behaviour and negative social activity in youth.
• Recreation promotes social bonds by uniting families, building cultural tolerance and
supporting seniors and individuals with disabilities.
Benefits of Recreation
Benefits of Recreation
Benefits to the Environment
• Open space, park and recreation areas are ideal mediums for encouraging and developing
stronger stewardship of the land. People who enjoy outdoor recreation become more familiar with
natural resources and the environment. This increased knowledge helps them understand how their
personal actions can affect the environment.
• Park lands and outdoor recreation facilities provide exceptional learning opportunities for students.
Using recreation areas and park land as a medium for learning creates a fun and relaxed
atmosphere where students want to participate.

!
Benefits to the Economy
!
!
• Active living is often the catalyst for tourism.
• Improving health through sport and other forms of physical activity significantly reduces
healthcare costs.

Sledge Hockey
Sledge hockey is an original team sport that incorporates the same rules and discipline structure as regular ice
hockey. Sledge hockey players sit on specially designed sleds, or ‘sledges’, with skate blades under the seat.
Players use two sticks to pass, stickhandle and shoot the puck, and also to propel and maneuver their sledges.

new and improved equipment to ensure a quality park
experience for residents and visitors.
Skate/Bike/Scooter Parks
We have skate parks located in Alliston, Beeton and
Tottenham for skateboard, BMX and scooter users.
Tottenham Conservation Area
The TCA has 41 acres of prime parkland, a pond, and
large sandy beach. It offers a host of possibilities for
keeping cool and having fun. Bring your canoe or pedal
boat, fish in the pond, or bring your friends and plan a
beach volleyball game. There is an abundance of wildlife
in its natural habitat, which can readily be seen.
Camping
We have non-serviced sites for tents and full service
sites for RV campers, washrooms and shower facilities.
Grocery stores, laundry and restaurants are nearby.
Pavilions
There are picnic pavilions available for rent at the
Conservation Area. The pavilions can be reserved for
private occasions such as business retreats, family
reunions and birthday parties but book early to avoid
disappointment.
Trails
The Town of New Tecumseth is currently working
towards closing the gap of the Trans Canada Trail
from Cookstown to Highway 9, using the 26 km of
abandoned rail line within its boundaries. 5.5 km
have been completed from Highway 9 to Mill Street,
Tottenham and approximately 1 km completed from the
20th Sideroad/14th Line. Work is in progress from Mill
Street to 5th line in Tottenham and this section will be
completed in the summer of 2014. The Town is working
in partnership with TCT Ontario and TCT National and the
!
County of Simcoe to complete the project by December
2017. The Town expects to complete another 10 to 12
km in 2014 from 14th line to 11th line, with planning
underway and designs being completed in consultation
with local landowners.
The Town of New Tecumseth is committed to the Trans
Canada Trail core principles:
✓ Provide a safe and enjoyable trails experience on a
high quality trial.
✓ Promote active and healthy lifestyle.
✓ Provide green space, encourage active transportation
and protect the environment.
✓ Develop a greenway that promotes non-motorized
use in summer and cross-country skiing,
snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter.
Outdoor Playfields
New Tecumseth boasts a wide variety of outdoor
playfields, including baseball diamonds, soccer fields,
rugby/football fields.
