Ravens won’t sacrifice the
future for chance to repeat

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — The last
time the Baltimore Ravens won a Super Bowl,
they mounted an all-out charge to pull off an
encore. That won’t happen again.
“You have to make sure that the excitement
of the day doesn’t cloud what we promised to
build, and that was a consistent winner,” Ravens
owner Steve Bisciotti said Thursday. “I’m just
proud for Baltimore, and there is a great pressure off of us.”
Although the Ravens have placed a high
priority on signing quarterback Joe Flacco to
a long-term deal, the team has no intention of
overpaying potential free agents or having several players restructure their contracts in order
to keep the current roster intact.
That’s what happened 12 years ago, when
general manager Ozzie Newsome sacrificed the
future to mount another run at a championship.
The Ravens backed up their 34-7 Super Bowl
win over the New York Giants by returning
to the playoffs, but they didn’t get back to the
Super Bowl.
And then, after the season, they suffered the
salary-cap blues.
“We’re not going to get caught up in the
moment and do things to our salary cap and
make decisions in the euphoria of winning that
could hurt us in 2014 and 2015, like we did in
2001,” Bisciotti said. “Every single veteran (in
2001) was restructured so that, I think, every
single veteran could stay, then we ended up
losing so many people the next year. We don’t
want to do that.”
Newsome feels the same way.
“We will not repeat what we did in 2001,”
he said. “We’re trying to build where we can
win Super Bowls more than just one more time.
I think our team is structured differently this
time, also. We do have some veterans that will
probably be retiring (linebacker Ray Lewis and
possibly center Matt Birk) but we have a great
nucleus of young players and players that are
just heading into their prime that we’re going to
build this team around.
“We’re not going to be restricting contracts,
do all of those different things just to be able
to maintain this team just to make another run.
We’re not doing that. But that doesn’t mean that

Fiji Sevens Rugby captain and 15’s Flanker, Setefano
Cakau, arrived after training Thursday to the USA Rugby
Sevens Headquarters, at the Monte Carlo Hotel. Cakau, before
rushing off for a dip in the pool asked what all inquiring Pacific
Islander rugby fans need to know; “Where is Monique Salofa?”
I explained that the earring Queen, was in contract negotiations with me and I had to get tough. I told Cakau that for the
price of one Monique I got her cousins George Tuioti working
the Press Box, Abe Markowitz with camera roving the field
and the crowd, her fa’a aiga Canadian Uncle Allan Hamilton
working one try line, and her real absolutely embarrassing
Uncle Cool Stuff working the other try line.
Guess what Monique? They have penny slots, high limit
slots and great Reuben sandwiches at the new and improved
Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino.
Fa’afetai tele to the USA Rugby Sevens Organizing Committee for an absolutely top-notch professional venue and
media relations. Oh, and they alerted US Homeland Security in case Monique tries to show up. Yes, Monique will be
deported to Savaii until she learns that $30,000 per week and
all expenses paid to her is not a trifling little insult. We are drinking and eating Monique’s paycheck in true
Coolio style. In fact we are being hosted in the Hilton’s
“Lennay Kekua Suite” where their motto on the door reads,
“It’s all just a fantasy in your head.” Hong Kong in March Monique? Go Manu!

Sevens at Westpac Stadium in Wellington. They are being
replaced by Mark Jackman (Canterbury) and Milford Keresoma
(Auckland) who are both contracted All Blacks Sevens players.

of an NBA basketball game in Boston, Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013.

Pierce scored 24 points as the Celtics won 116-95. Celtics rout Lakers 116-95
for their sixth straight win
BOSTON (AP) — The rivalry between the
Celtics and Lakers keeps rolling even if they
no longer dominate the NBA. And that brought
some extra satisfaction to Boston’s Paul Pierce
after he led a 116-95 rout of Los Angeles with
24 points on Thursday night.
“It always feels good when you can give
them a little old-fashioned beatdown in your
house, no matter what direction these teams
are going,” he said. “It’ll always be a rivalry.
Everybody’s always going to watch.”
It was even more special, and perhaps surprising, that the win gave the Celtics a 6-0
record since losing point guard Rajon Rondo
for the season with a torn knee ligament.
“We’re in a rhythm. We’re moving the
ball,” said Kevin Garnett, who had 15 points
and became the 16th player in NBA history to
reach the 25,000-point mark. “Some day when
I’m rocking in a rocking chair having a cigar
and thinking what I’ve done I’m sure it’ll make
some sense to me, (but) the first priority was the
Lakers.”
The teams have met a record 12 times in the
NBA Finals, the last in 2010 when the Lakers
won in seven games. Only four players on those
teams were active Thursday — Kobe Bryant
and Metta World Peace for Los Angeles and
Pierce and Garnett for Boston. Pau Gasol and
Rondo also played in that series but missed
Thursday’s game.
In 2008, the Celtics beat the Lakers in six
games for the championship.
“You can feel the energy every time the
Lakers come into the building,” Pierce said.
“There’s always a little extra mustard you’re
going to try to put out there when this type of
setting is set up for you.”
The Lakers played with Dwight Howard
after he missed three games with a sore right
shoulder but without Gasol, who is out indefinitely with a torn plantar fascia in his right foot.
Bryant scored 27 to lead the Lakers, who
had won their previous three games but suffered
their worst loss of the season. Howard had nine
points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes before
fouling out with 5:07 left. “There were a couple
times where I felt (the shoulder pain),” he said,
“but I just tried not to think about it. “
World Peace also was back after a one-game
suspension for grabbing Detroit’s Brandon
Knight around the neck and striking him in the
jaw with the knuckles of his mostly open hand
in the Lakers’ 98-97 win Sunday.
The Lakers cut a 58-44 halftime deficit to
72-61 with 5:07 left in the third quarter. Then
the Celtics went on a 23-8 run and led 95-69
going into the fourth. Pierce started the surge
with a three-point play and ended it with a
3-pointer with 41 seconds left, giving him 12
points in the period.
“The first half was just as bad as the second,”
said Lakers point guard Steve Nash, who had
just nine points and five assists. “Disappointing
performance, start to finish.”
The win was the Celtics’ biggest of the
season and broke a tie with Milwaukee for seventh place in the East. They moved within 1½
games of sixth.
“The roof just kind of caved in on us,”
Bryant said. “It always just seems like whenever their backs are against the wall you know
that’s when you really see the best from them.”
The Lakers had won six of their previous
seven games and had moved three games
behind the Houston Rockets for the eighth and
final playoff spot in the West.
But they trailed by at least 11 points
throughout the second half.
Previously, the Celtics’ biggest win was
94-75 at Indiana on Jan. 4, and the Lakers’
worst loss was 113-97 at Sacramento on Nov.
21. Garnett reached 25,000 points with an
11-foot turnaround jumper that gave him six for
the game and put the Celtics ahead 39-29 with
8:08 left in the half. Jeff Green had 19 points
and Jason Terry added 15.
Besides Rondo, rookie forward Jared Sullinger also is out for the season after having back
surgery and sat out his fourth game.
“Our guys just think they’re good,” Boston
coach Doc Rivers said. “We’re playing selfless
and free.”
The Celtics led by 14 at halftime after hitting 51.1 percent of their shots while the Lakers
kept missing open jumpers and sank just 37.8
percent of theirs, including just 2 of 12 from
beyond the 3-point arc.
Los Angeles’ last lead, 11-10, came on a
12-foot turnaround fadeaway by Bryant with
6:38 left in the first quarter.
Boston led 27-23 going into the second
and built it to 55-40 when Garnett drew two
defenders to him under the basket and passed to
Chris Wilcox for a dunk with 2:35 left.
Boston took its biggest lead of the half,
58-42 on two free throws by Pierce with 37 seconds to go.
Notes: The Celtics play at home Sunday for
the sixth time in seven games when they meet
the Denver Nuggets. ... The Lakers are 3-2 on
their seven-game road trip, which continues
Friday night in Charlotte and ends Sunday in
Miami. ... Six Celtics scored in double figures,
the fifth straight game in which they had at
least five.
Hawaii signs 20
recruits, 6 from
within the state
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii coach Norm Chow said in
searching for recruits to his football team, he wanted good
players who want to play for the Warriors.
The university announced 20 signees on Wednesday,
including three junior-college transfers and six recruits from
within the state.
Wednesday was the first day recruits were allowed to officially sign with NCAA schools that offer them scholarships.
“The identity we want to establish is we want to play tough,
hard-nosed football with guys that want to be here,” Chow
told reporters during a news conference on Wednesday.
Chow said he believes he got the state’s top offensive and
defensive linemen, preventing them from leaving for schools
on the mainland.
The class includes nine offensive players and 11 defensive
players. It features two players ranked within ESPN’s top 300
national recruits: quarterback Aaron Zwahlen of Modesto,
Calif., and Kennedy Tulimasealii of Waianae.
Hawaii signed six players from California, four from Utah,
two from Florida and one each from Louisiana and American
Samoa. Hawaii also signed five midyear transfers not included
in the class. They signed in December.
Chow says the class should be judged in two to three years,
when its impact will be the biggest.
“Last year’s and this year’s class coupled with the next few
classes, and we should really have ingredients of a strong program,” he said.
Chow is entering his second season with the program after
being hired in December 2011. The Warriors finished 3-9 last
year, with only one win in the Mountain West. Hawaii won its
last two games, beating UNLV and South Alabama at home.

Denver, Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013. Faried’s slam dunks lead
Nuggets past Bulls 128-96
DENVER (AP) — Kenneth Faried didn’t
wait for the All-Star dunk contest to put on a
big show.
The Denver Nuggets’ second-year star celebrated his invitation to the league’s annual
slam dunk contest with a series of rim-rattling,
crowd-pleasing jams that set the tone for the
Nuggets’ eighth straight win, a 128-96 rout of
the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night.
Faried finished with 21 points and 12
rebounds in 26 minutes as the Nuggets won for
the 15th time in 18 games since Jan. 1, playing
from the opening tip with an intensity that
seemed to take the Bulls by surprise.
He had 17 points and eight boards on the
break and was on the bench by the fourth quarter
along with the rest of Denver’s starters as they
relished what had become a laugher.
Wilson Chandler added a season-high 24
points, sinking all five of his 3-pointers, as the
Nuggets made quick work of a stingy Bulls
team that came in yielding just 91 points a game
but watched Denver pour in 100 by the time the
third quarter was over. “Wilson and Kenneth,
what an incredible performance,” Denver coach
George Karl said. “That’s 45 points on 19 shots.
I’ll take that every night.”
Faried said he was more inspired by the television cameras at the Pepsi Center on this night
than the chance to be in the spotlight during the
All-Star weekend. He said he feels nobody’s
noticing the Nuggets as they round into shape
following a tough start to the season in which
they played 17 of their first 23 on the road,
something no NBA team had endured in more
than a quarter century.
“I came out with a mindset tonight just to
dominate,” Faried said. “I just wanted to come
out and make a statement and Wilson came out
and did the same thing. Our team did the same
thing, wanted to come out and make a statement
in a nationally televised game. We did what we
had to do tonight.
JaVale McGee put on his own slam-and-jam
show, adding 10 points for the Nuggets, who
haven’t lost since Jan. 18 and led this one by as
many as 35 points.
The Nuggets’ 128 points was their highest
output of the season and also the most points
allowed by the Bulls this season, surpassing
the 120 that Houston had on Dec. 25 — it also
marks the most an opponent scored during Tom
Thibodeau’s three years as the Bulls’ coach.
“I think today we made a statement on TNT,”
Faried said, “and showed everybody hey, notice
us, pay attention. We’re out here trying to do our
best and we’re out here trying to set records.”
Carlos Boozer led Chicago’s starters with 18
points. The Bulls again were without starting
guards Derrick Rose (left knee) and Kirk Hinrich (right elbow). Center Joakim Noah (right
foot) returned to the lineup, but was held to just
one bucket and five rebounds. Reserve Daequan
Cook led the Bulls with 19 points.
“Yeah, they’re short-handed, they’re down a
couple of guys,” Karl said, unable to avoid a
smile as he perused the Nuggets’ best stat sheet
of the season. “You know, we did what we had
to do and it was fun watching the dunks and the
3-ball going in and the defensive energy and
Kenneth bouncing around.”
Faried learned before the game he had been
selected to take part in the slam dunk competition during All-Star festivities in Houston on
Feb. 16. “I mean, I’m ecstatic about it, happy
to go out there and showcase what I can do and
excite the fans,” Faried said before going out
and nearly hitting a double-double by the time
the Nuggets went to the locker room with a
63-58 halftime lead.
His biggest dunk in the first half came on the
break when Ty Lawson’s layup rimmed out and
he timed it perfectly to throw down the followup. But his best one came in the third quarter
when Lawson stripped Noah and flipped the
ball to Faried for the fast-break bucket that gave
Denver an 80-64 cushion.
Moments later, Faried tied up Noah on his
way to the basket, part of a stellar defensive
effort during a 28-6 spurt that allowed the Nuggets to coast to their seventh straight win at the
Pepsi Center. “It was an offensive game in the
first half. They came out the third quarter and
just smoked us,” Thibodeau said. “They played
very good defense. They got 37 in the third, got
a big cushion, and that was the game.”
With the game out of hand at 100-74 after
three quarters, Lawson was the only starter for
either team to log any minutes in the fourth
quarter and he took a seat after just two minutes.
Lawson finished with 16 points and 12
assists and the Nuggets were an astonishing
plus-40 when he was on the court.
“It was fun, everybody was into it,” Faried
said. “I mean, it was a hell of a night.”
NOTES: The last Denver player to participate in the slam dunk contest was J.R. Smith
in 2009. ... Before the game, Nuggets coach
George Karl met with 2013 U.S. Solheim Cup
captain Meg Mallon and assistant captain Dottie
Pepper along with LPGA Commissioner Mike
Whan. Karl is a member of the Colorado Golf
Club where the Americans and Europeans will
compete for the cup this August.
James Harden:
All-Star tips for
NBA visitors…
HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden is ready. For the music,
the weather, the restaurants.
And, yes, he’ll work in some basketball as well.
“Houston is a beautiful city,” he says.
Harden will be making his NBA All-Star debut when the
game and its weekend of festivities come to Houston Feb. 15-17.
In his first season with the Houston Rockets after an October
trade from Oklahoma City, Harden has taken to the nation’s
fourth-largest city. And for those planning a trip to the game,
he’s set to play travel agent — where to stay, what to eat, things
to do.
“There’s so much you can do, so if you come it should be a
good time,” he tells The Associated Press. “There’s just so much
variety.”
And with temperatures expected to be in the high 60s, a visit
would be a welcome respite for fans from colder climates.
“That’s another reason why Houston is beautiful,” he said.
“The weather is always nice for the most part.”
There’s also the throngs of rappers who will descend on the
city for a weekend that has become known as much for bigname rap shows and parties as it is for basketball.
“I’m looking forward to seeing everybody from the legends
like Jay-Z and Kanye West and Rick Ross, to the newer, young
guys like Meek Mill and Wiz Khalifa and even Trinidad James,”
he said.
The Sunday night game at the Toyota Center ends a weekend
of events on the court, including the Rising Stars Challenge for
first- and second-year players, slam dunk and 3-point contests
and a celebrity basketball game.
“I’m excited to be a first-time All-Star and my first time being
in Houston just made it more special,” said Harden, who’s in his
fourth season. “Just to see all the newer guys like myself and all
the other first-time All-Stars should be really fun.”
After games, Harden often makes the half-mile trip to one
of his favorite Houston restaurants, Vic and Anthony’s Steakhouse, 1510 Texas St. He likes the Atlantic salmon with Texas
tapenade, king crab risotto and Brussels sprouts, but says you
can’t go wrong with any of the steaks.
“Pretty much everything on the menu is really good,” he said.
“Nice atmosphere, good people and very good food, so it’s a
pretty good time.”
He’s also become a big fan of Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, a
Houston-based Cajun seafood chain with 12 locations throughout
the city. Harden likes their Mississippi catfish Opelousas, a dish
of blackened catfish with oysters, shrimp and jumbo lump crab
meat in lemon garlic butter served over dirty rice.
“That’s a big name out here if you’re looking for a great seafood place,” Harden said. “It’s well known out here so a lot of
people want to go there, especially out of towners.”
Harden doesn’t drink, saying he sticks to orange juice. But
for those who do, Pappadeaux is known for its rainbow-hued
Swamp Thing cocktail, a concoction of raspberry and melon
liqueurs layered with frozen hurricane and margarita.
Harden loves the convenience of living downtown and suggests fans traveling to the game find a hotel in the area. When
he has friends and family in town they often stay at the Four
Seasons, a five-minute walk from the Toyota Center.
After signing a five-year, $80 million contract extension soon
after the trade, one of Harden’s favorite activities in Houston is
shopping. And there’s no better place to do it in the city than the
Galleria.
The sprawling mall, located about eight miles from downtown at 5085 Westheimer Rd., spans 2.4 million square feet and
is home to about 400 shops and restaurants.
“I can do a lot of shopping, and the Galleria mall has everything you need and every store,” he said. “I go there like once
a week just to get a couple of new things and stay up on my
fashion game. The mall is just amazing.”
Known for his long and wild beard, Harden describes his
style as eclectic and said he doesn’t gravitate to any one store
or brand.
“I’m unique and different in my own way,” he said. “I just go
with the flow.”
Visitors who are hip-hop fans will have no shortage of things
to do at night during All-Star weekend. Harden, who was last
season’s Sixth Man of the Year and won an Olympic gold medal
with the U.S. team in London, likes that the event brings rappers
and athletes together.
“As basketball players we listen to a lot of music before the
games and we’re fans of the rap game, and rappers are fans of

Olympic rings for the 2014 Winter Olympics are installed in the Black Sea resort of Sochi,
southern Russia, late Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012.
With the Winter Olympics a year away, IOC President Jacques Rogge praised Sochi organizers
(AP Photo/Ignat Kozlov)
on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, and defended the $51 billion price tag. Putin angry over Sochi
Olympics cost overruns
SOCHI, Russia (AP) — A year before the
2014 Winter Olympics are to begin, President
Vladimir Putin has demanded that a senior
member of the Russian Olympic Committee be
fired, apparently due to cost overruns in host
city Sochi — a demand certain to be fulfilled.
The current price tag for the Sochi Games
is 1.5 trillion rubles ($51 billion), which would
make them the most expensive games in the
history of the Olympics — more costly even
than the much-larger Summer Olympics held in
London and Beijing.
The games at the Black Sea resort of Sochi
are considered a matter of national pride and
one of Putin’s top priorities.
The Russian president’s decision came after
he scolded officials over a two-year delay and
huge cost overruns in the construction of the
Sochi ski jump facilities. The official facing dismissal, Akmet Bilalov, had a company that was
building the ski jump and its adjacent facilities
before selling its stake to state-owned Sberbank
last year. During his tour of Olympic venues,
Putin fumed when he heard that the cost of the
ski jump had soared from 1.2 billion rubles ($40
million) to 8 billion rubles ($265 million) and
that the project was behind schedule.
“So a vice president of the Olympic Committee is dragging down the entire construction? Well done! You are doing a good job,”
Putin said Wednesday, seething with sarcasm.
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak
told reporters Thursday that Putin had recommended that the Russian Olympic Committee
fire Bilalov, one of its six vice presidents.
“As far as Bilalov is concerned the president voiced his decision yesterday: People who
don’t make good on their obligations at such a
scale cannot head the Olympic movement in
our country,” he said.
The Russian Olympic Committee said in a
statement that a decision on Bilalov would be
made by the executive committee in the near
future, a move likely to be only a formality.
Putin’s power in Russia is such that resisting the
call for his dismissal would be almost unthinkable. Kozak underscored that by saying, “I very
much hope that our Olympic movement will
listen to the recommendations of the country’s
leadership.”
Most countries that host the Olympics use
public funds to pay for most of the construction
of the sports venues and new infrastructure such
as roads and trains. The Russian government,
however, has gotten state-controlled companies
and tycoons to foot more than half of the bill.
Both the companies and the tycoons understand the importance of maintaining good relations with Putin, who has a lot of prestige riding
on the success of the Sochi games.
Kozak said the costs constantly increased for
the ski jump project because Bilalov’s company
did not properly check the land and, as a result,
picked a geologically challenging plot.
“His calculations failed,” Kozak said.
Despite these setbacks, Russian officials on
Thursday went to great lengths to reiterate that
everything in Sochi was now on schedule.
“As (International Olympic Committee)
members and we stated yesterday, it is already
clear that we have succeeded with this immense
— and possibly the most immense — project in
Russia’s modern history,” Kozak said.
Taking a cue from Putin, however, Russian
officials sought to play down the high costs.
Kozak said the government spent no more than
100 billion rubles ($3 billion) on the Olympic
venues and the immediate infrastructure.
The government has spent a total of $13 billion so far, and expects to spend about $18 billion overall before the games begin, Kozak has
said previously.
On Thursday, Kozak said it was unfair to
compare Sochi’s budget to that of previous
Olympic games because Russian organizers
had to build most of the vital and costly infrastructure that was needed — roads, railways,
tunnels, gas pipelines — from scratch.
No Russian officials went near the topic of
possible corruption, even though Russian business is notoriously plagued by it. Russia last
year ranked 133rd out of 176 in Transparency
International’s Corruption Perception Index,
along with countries such as Kazakhstan, Iran
and Honduras.
Although there were no documented cases of
corruption directly linked to Olympic construction in Sochi, a dozen officials from the Sochi
government have been slapped with charges of

Sochi organizers also sought to assuage fears
that the 2014 Games may fall victim to a warm

Temperatures at Sochi’s Krasnaya Polyana

degrees F (19 C) in the coastal city of Sochi.

Baltimore Ravens president Dick Cass, from left, head coach John Harbaugh, general manager and executive vice president Ozzie Newsome and owner Steve
Bisciotti speak alongside the Vince Lombardi Trophy at an NFL football news conference on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, in Owings Mills, Md. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)
➧ The Ravens won’t sacrifice the future for chance to repeat…
we don’t want to try and go and repeat.”
The first step in that process is getting Flacco on
board. The Super Bowl MVP’s contract expired after
Baltimore’s season-ending 34-31 win over San Francisco last Sunday.
“I’m coming away today thinking that we can get
a deal done,” Newsome said, noting that in similar
situations the team signed Haloti Ngata, Jonathan
Ogden, Ray Lewis, Ray Rice, Ed Reed and Terrell
Suggs.
“I’ve got a very good owner who understands the
business, who understands the importance of certain
positions,” Newsome said. “So I’m optimistic.”
If the sides don’t reach an agreement, the Ravens
can slap the franchise tag on Flacco. But they would
prefer to avoid that scenario because it would take up
salary cap space.
There are plenty of other issues to deal with
during the offseason, so much so that Newsome,
Bisciotti, coach John Harbaugh and other highranking team officials met for 10 hours Wednesday
to discuss virtually every player on the roster. Six
starters become unrestricted free agents, including
Flacco, linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Paul
Kruger, and safety Ed Reed.
Reed, 34, basked in the glow of his first Super
Bowl title Sunday night.
He remained giddy during the parade Tuesday,
which gives Newsome hope of getting the nine-time
Pro Bowl star under contract for 2013.
“I think he wanted to let some time clear and
at that point, he and I will sit down,” Newsome
said. “I think he realizes there may be some other
options out there, but I think if you watched him,
if you watched his body language over the course
of the last eight to 10 days, (it’s apparent) that he
loves being here in Baltimore. I think we can use
that to help make that relationship last a little bit
longer.”
Although they won the Super Bowl, the Ravens
are still looking to fill some holes. The retirement of
Lewis, along with the potential loss of Ellerbe and
free agent defensive tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu, has
not escaped Newsome’s attention.
Continued from page B1
“We think we’ve got to get better at defensive
tackle,” Newsome said. “We know that we have one
linebacker retiring and one that’s a free agent. We’ve
got a safety that’s a free agent and some young guys
that have yet to step up. So we would say the middle
of the defense is probably the one area that we will
concentrate on.”
Winning a Super Bowl is a tough task. Doing it in
succession is far more difficult. So the Ravens have
decided to start anew next year instead of looking to
repeat. “The word repeat means nothing,” Harbaugh
insisted. “You go back to work.”
The Ravens are the only team in the NFL to reach
the playoffs in each of the past five years. Their task
next year will be to extend the streak to six, then
hope the postseason drive ends with a victory.
“I don’t really believe in the defending champ
thing,” Harbaugh said. “It’s not boxing. They don’t
give you a belt and you fight for the title. The 2012
champions were the Baltimore Ravens. Next year’s
champion depends on who plays the best, who handles adversity the best, who comes out on top.”

which athletes competed in test events amid snowstorms as temperatures dipped to 20

Dmitry Chernyshenko, head of the local organizing committee, said Sochi boasts
one of Europe’s largest snow-making systems and also has equipment that can store
snow throughout the summer and protect slopes and tracks from rain and fog. More
than 400 snow-making generators will be deployed on the slopes.
He said Sochi has special equipment that can make snow even in temperatures up to
59 degrees (15 C). “Snow will be guaranteed in 2014,” Chernyshenko declared.
Warm temperatures and rain disrupted some of the snowboarding and freestyle
skiing events at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.
The countdown celebrations culminated later Thursday in a star-studded ice show at
one of the Olympic arenas, attended by Putin and IOC President Jacques Rogge.
“Today we have come to an important line — exactly a year remains until the first
Winter Games in the history of Russia,” Putin said at the show. “International test events
have shown that the Olympic facilities of Sochi are already prepared to hold the games.”
Also Thursday, tickets for the games went on sale online in Russia.
The prices range from a low of 500 rubles ($17) to a high of 50,000 rubles ($1,700).
Organizers said about 40 percent of the tickets would be priced under 3,000 rubles
($100). The total number of tickets put on sale was not disclosed.
In a bid to combat ticket scalping, Sochi organizers said they would limit the number
of tickets that can be bought by one person. For the most popular events, such as the
opening ceremony and top ice hockey games, the limit would be four tickets per person.
Sochi organizers will also require visitors to apply for a special spectator pass without
which they will not be able to access the venues. The games run from Feb. 7-23, 2014.
basketball players and they like to come see us play,” he said. “In a sense,
we want to be them and they want to be like us, so All-Star weekend is a

Dozens of parties and concerts featuring everyone from Lil Wayne to
Diddy to Young Jeezy and T.I. are planned for the weekend.
The sheer volume of events left Harden unable to suggest a single spot
to check out.
“There’s going to be so much going on, there’s going to be so many
headline parties and rappers and NBA players hosting parties and things
like that,” he said. “No matter what party you show up at it’s going to be
good and it’s going to be packed because a lot of people are coming down.”
Though Harden wouldn’t reveal where he’ll be partying, he did share
that he listens to rapper Meek Mill’s hit song “Dreams and Nightmares”
before every game.
The rapper has a concert planned on Feb. 15 at Warehouse Live, 813
St. Emanuel St., less than a mile from the arena. It won’t be hard to find
Harden if he drops by. The bearded 6-foot-5 baller says he won’t just be
standing around if you catch him at a party.
“I have rhythm. I wouldn’t call myself a dancer, but I go with the flow,”
he said with a grin. “I’m not just a wallflower. I can move a little bit.”

Wash. Redskins
name deemed
a ‘racial slur’ at
the Smithsonian
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hurtful names and racial stereotypes of all types were discussed and dissected Thursday in a
daylong symposium at the Smithsonian, and the Washington
Redskins were at the top of the list for nearly all those who
spoke.
“I can only imagine what it would be like to be at a football
game at FedEx Field in a crowd of close to 90,000, all screaming
at the top of their lungs, when what they are screaming is a
racial slur,” said Judith Bartnoff, a deputy presiding judge in
District of Columbia Superior Court.
By the time the day was over, they had a convert.
Unaware of what the presentation was all about, Andre Holland wore his burgundy and gold Redskins hat, ear muffs and
key chain to the National Museum of the American Indian. He
was on a field trip with his Sports in America class from Anne
Arundel Community College.
When the sessions ended, the 20-year-old student had
removed the hat and disavowed the nickname of his lifelong
favorite NFL team, having been persuaded that it’s as racist as
the worst names he might be called as an African-American.
“I really don’t feel right wearing this stuff now,” Holland
said. “And now I can’t even say ‘HTTR’ — which is ‘Hail to
the Redskins’ — because that’s chanting something racist. I’m
going to be a fan of Washington — a ‘Washington football
team.’ Not the ‘Washington Redskins.’”
Panelists and audience members explained why they felt the
name was offensive and offered all sorts of ideas — including
a protest at training camp and the need to get franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III to speak out — that might persuade team
owner Dan Snyder that a change is needed.
Holland was convinced. He was one of the few in the partisan crowd who showed up liking the name. As he listened,
he started tweeting — and he said the feedback he got opened
his eyes, along the panels’ presentations about the history of
insensitive mascots such as “Little Red,” who used to dance at
University of Oklahoma games. Also under scrutiny was a redskinned image named “Mr. Yakoo” used by the North Quincy
Red Raiders at a high school in Massachusetts.
Near the end of the final session, Holland went to the microphone and compared Redskins to the n-word, then turned around
and gave a hug to the Native American standing next in line.
“A serious day for me,” Holland said.
Organizers say the Redskins did not respond to an invitation
to participate, and no one stood up to defend the Redskins name
when the audience was invited to participate.
There has been momentum toward changing names deemed
offensive, although Snyder has been adamant about that he’s
not going to join the trend. On Tuesday, Washington Mayor
Vincent Gray specifically avoided saying the name of franchise
in his State of the District speech and instead referred to “our
Washington football team.”
In 2005, the NCAA announced it would ban the use of
American Indian imagery and nicknames at postseason tournaments. Some schools have since been granted exceptions with
the support of tribes, such as the Florida State Seminoles.
The latest to make the switch are the students at Cooperstown high school in upstate New York, who voted this week
to ditch their “Redskins” nickname. The school, located in the
hometown of “The Last of the Mohicans” author James Fenimore Cooper, is considering “Deerslayers,” ‘’Hawkeyes” and
“Pathfinders” as alternatives.
Suzan Shown Harjo, president of the Washington-based
Morning Star Institute, an advocacy group, said there are some
900 troublesome nicknames and mascots across the country,
down from a peak of more than 3,000 when “Little Red” was
taken off the field in the early 1970s.
“We consider it racial profiling,” former Colorado Sen. Ben
Nighthorse Campbell said. “I think more and more people are
recognizing it.”
The best chance to change Snyder’s mind would likely be
to hit him in the pocketbook by getting the U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office to void the Redskins trademark. A group of
American Indians made progress on that front during a 17-year
court battle that came to a halt in 2009 because it was ruled that
the plaintiffs waited too long to file their original case. There
is now a new case filed by younger plaintiffs that is due for a
hearing next month.

UN: US air raids
kill hundreds of the Earth, no need to duck
Afghan children
NEW YORK (AP) — Attacks by U.S. military forces
in Afghanistan, including air strikes, have reportedly killed
hundreds of children over the last four years, according to
the U.N. body monitoring the rights of children.
The Geneva-based Committee on the Rights of the Child
said the casualties were “due notably to reported lack of
precautionary measures and indiscriminate use of force.” It
was reviewing a range of U.S. policies affecting children
for the first time since 2008 — the last year of the Bush
administration and the year Barack Obama was first elected
president.
The U.N. review is conducted every four years, and the
report’s release came as U.S. policy on drone targeting and
air strikes is under intense scrutiny in Washington.
John Brennan, the White House counterterrorism chief
who is Obama’s choice to head the CIA, was facing a
Senate Intelligence Committee confirmation hearing
Thursday. Brennan helped manage the drone program and
has defended targeted killings by drones and air strikes as a
more humane form of warfare that results in fewer collateral
casualties.
A report to the U.N. Security Council last April by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s special representative for
Children and Armed Conflict said, “The number of child
casualties attributed to airstrikes conducted by pro-government forces, including the Afghan National Security Forces
and the International Military Forces, doubled compared
with the last reporting period, with 110 children killed and
68 injured in 2011.”
The United States provides air power for the government
of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland
said Thursday that she was not aware of the U.N. report and
would look into it.
In its report, the U.N. committee told the United States to
“take concrete and firm precautionary measures and prevent
indiscriminate use of force to ensure that no further killings
and maiming of civilians, including children, take place.”
Human rights and civil liberties groups applauded the
U.N. committee’s findings and recommendations.
“The U.S. must also honor its international law obligations to thoroughly and independently investigate civilian
deaths and abuses against children, hold perpetrators
accountable and compensate victims,” Jamil Dakwar,
director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Human
Rights Program, told The Associated Press on Thursday.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A
150-foot-wide asteroid will come remarkably
close to Earth next week, even closer than highflying communication and weather satellites.
It will be the nearest known flyby for an object
of this size. But don’t worry. Scientists promise
the megarock will be at least 17,100 miles away
when it zips past next Friday. “No Earth impact is
possible,” Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA’s
Near-Earth Object program at Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said Thursday.
Even the chance of an asteroid-satellite run-in
is extremely remote, Yeomans and other scientists noted. A few hundred satellites orbit at
22,300 miles, higher than the asteroid’s path,
although operators are being warned about the
incoming object for tracking purposes.
“No one has raised a red flag, nor will they,”
Yeomans told reporters. “I certainly don’t anticipate any problems whatsoever.”
Impossible to see with the naked eye, the
asteroid is considered small as these things go.
By contrast, the one that took out the dinosaurs
65 million years ago was 6 miles wide.
Yet Asteroid 2012 DA14, as it’s known for its
discovery date, still could pack a wallop.
If it impacted Earth — which it won’t, scientists were quick to add Thursday — it would
release the energy equivalent of 2.4 million tons
of TNT and wipe out 750 square miles. That’s
what happened in Siberia in 1908, when forest
land around the Tunguska River was flattened
by a slightly smaller asteroid that exploded
about five miles above ground. The likelihood
of something this size striking Earth is once in
every 1,200 years. A close, harmless encounter
like this is thought to occur every 40 years.
The bulk of the solar system’s asteroids are
located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter,
and remain stable there for billions of years.
Some pop out, though, into Earth’s neighborhood
The closest approach of this one will occur next
Friday afternoon, Eastern time, over Indonesia.
There won’t be much of a show. The asteroid
will zip by at 17,400 mph. That’s roughly eight
times faster than a bullet from a high-speed rifle.
The asteroid will be invisible to the naked
eye and even with binoculars and telescopes
will appear as a small point of light. The prime
viewing locations will be in Asia, Australia and
eastern Europe. Observers in the U.S. can pretty
much forget it. Astronomers using NASA’s
deep-space antenna in California’s Mojave
Desert will have to wait eight hours after the
closest approach to capture radar images.
Scientists welcome whatever pictures they
get. The asteroid offers a unique opportunity to
observe something this big and close, and any
new knowledge will help if and when another
killer asteroid is headed Earth’s way.
The close approach also highlights the need
to keep track of what’s out there, if for no other
reason than to protect the planet.
NASA’s current count of near-Earth objects:
just short of 10,000, the result of a concentrated
effort for the past 15 years. That’s thought to represent less than 10 percent of the objects out there. No
one has ruled out a serious Earth impact, although
the probability is said to be extremely low.
“We don’t have all the money in the world
to do this kind of work” for tracking and potentially deflecting asteroids, said Lindley Johnson,
an executive with the Near-Earth Object observations program in Washington.
Indeed, when asked about NASA’s plans to
send astronauts to an asteroid in the decades
ahead, as outlined a few years ago by President
Barack Obama, Johnson said the space agency
is looking at a number of options for human
explorations. One of the more immediate steps,
planned for 2016, is the launch of a spacecraft
to fly to a much bigger asteroid, collect samples
and return them to Earth in 2023.
As for Asteroid 2012 DA14 — discovered
last year by astronomers in Spain — scientists
suspect it’s made of silicate rock, but aren’t sure.
Its shape and precise size also are mysteries.
What they do know with certainty:
“This object’s orbit is so well known that
there’s no chance of a collision,” Yeomans
repeated during Thursday’s news conference.
Its close approach, in fact, will alter its orbit
around the sun in such a way as to keep it out of
Earth’s neighborhood, at least in the foreseeable
future, Yeomans said.
Johnson anticipates no “sky is falling thing”
related to next week’s flyby.
He and other scientists urged journalists to
keep the close encounter in perspective. “Space
rocks hit the Earth’s atmosphere on a daily basis.
Basketball-size objects come in daily. Volkswagen-size objects come in every couple of
weeks,” Yeomans said. The grand total of stuff
hitting the atmosphere every day? “About 100
tons,” according to Yeoman, though most of it
arrives harmlessly as sand-sized particles.

Governor ‘saddened’ by
death of Riverside officer
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry
Brown is offering condolences to the family of
a Riverside police officer who was one of three
people believed to be killed by a former Los
Angeles police officer during a shooting spree
across Southern California.
In a statement issued late Thursday, the
Democratic governor said he was “shocked and
saddened” when he learned about the attack that
took place early that morning.
The name of the officer is not being released
while the suspect, Christopher Dorner, remains at
large. Dorner is the subject of a widespread manhunt that focused on the mountain community of
Big Bear late Thursday. Brown’s office said the
34-year-old field training officer who was shot as
he and a trainee were stopped for a traffic light in
Riverside. The trainee was critically injured.
Obama says he prays for
humility in Washington
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack
Obama is telling leaders at the annual National
Prayer Breakfast he hopes they maintain the
morning’s bipartisan spirit a little longer.
The president says he often returns from the
gathering and turns on cable news, only to find
that prayers for unity have already faded away.
He jokes that, quote, he’d “like to think that the
shelf life wasn’t so short.”
Obama says this time, he hopes the gathered
leaders retain their humility, not just for the annual
hour-long meeting, but for every hour of the day.
He says, quote, “Those of us with the most power
and influence must be the most humble.”
Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama,
host of this year’s breakfast, responded by
thanking Obama for being his president.
American resident killed
in Mexico stabbing
MEXICO CITY (AP) — The U.S. Embassy
in Mexico says an American woman has been
found dead in the central Mexico city of San
Miguel de Allende. The Embassy lists the woman’s name as Joyous Heart, but gives no information on her hometown or cause of death.
Asked about the case, the prosecutors’ office
in northern Guanajuato state said Thursday that a
woman was found stabbed to death in her home
on Feb. 1. Her throat has been slashed.
The prosecutors’ statement did not name the
victim, but gave a case file number that matched
descriptions in local press reports of Heart’s
killing. San Miguel de Allende is a colonial city
located in Guanajuato state and is popular with
American tourists and expats.
Mars rover Curiosity drills
first hole in rock in a test
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The Curiosity
rover has drilled a test hole in a Martian rock in
preparation for the real thing.
Images released Thursday by NASA showed
a ring of powder that was generated by the drill
at the end of the rover’s robotic arm. The hole
measured less than an inch deep.
Scientists planned to analyze the latest
activity — dubbed a “mini drill test” — before
commanding Curiosity to drill deeper. One of its
major tasks is to drill into a rock and transfer the
ground-up powder to its onboard laboratories for
analysis — a first on Mars.
Curiosity landed in an ancient crater near the
Martian equator last year on a mission to gauge
whether environmental conditions were favorable for microbes.
Ferry with 100 aboard
capsizes in Bangladesh
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A ferry
packed with about 100 people capsized Friday in
a river in central Bangladesh after colliding with
another boat, police and news reports said.
Police said there were no immediate reports
of casualties after the ferry, MV Sarash, went
down on the River Meghna in Munshiganj district, 32 kilometers (20 miles) south of Dhaka.
The private television station Channel-I said
local villagers rescued more than 40 people after
the accident. Several other people were able to
swim to shore, the report said.
The ferry was on a local run from Narayanganj city to Matlab in the south.
Ferry accidents are common in Bangladesh, a
delta nation of 153 million people.
Calif. seeks to adopt the
nation’s toughest gun laws
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Weeks after
New York enacted the nation’s toughest gun
laws, California lawmakers said Thursday they
want their state to do even more in response to
recent mass shootings, particularly the Connecticut school massacre.
Democrats who control the state Legislature
revealed 10 proposals that they said would make
California the most restrictive state for possessing firearms. They were joined at a Capitol
news conference by San Francisco Mayor Ed
Lee and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, along with several police chiefs.
“California has always been a leader on the
issue of gun safety,” Villaraigosa said. “New
York has stepped up and stepped forward. California needs to answer the call.”

Michelle Obama to attend
Chicago girl’s funeral
WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House
official says Michelle Obama will attend Saturday’s funeral for the 15-year-old Chicago girl
who was killed after returning home from performing during inauguration festivities for President Barack Obama.
Hadiya Pendleton was killed in a park close
to the Obamas’ home on Chicago’s South Side.
Police say a gunman hopped a fence and opened
fire on a group of young people, killing the drum
majorette. No arrests have been made.
White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett
and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, both
from Chicago, also will attend the funeral.
Pendleton’s death brought renewed attention
to Chicago’s homicide rate and the debate over
gun violence in America.
The White House official spoke on condition
of anonymity because the first lady’s travel plans
had not been formally announced.
Palestinian sentenced
for cursing president
RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — A Palestinian court has sentenced a West Bank man to
a year in jail for “cursing the president” on Facebook. The Magistrates Court of the city of Nablus
sentenced Anas Awwad, 26, on Thursday. His
father says Awwad is being punished for a comment he made about a picture of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas kicking a soccer ball taken
during his visit to Barcelona Football Club in 2011.
Awwad wrote “The new striker in Real Madrid.”
His lawyer says he is appealing the decision.
Another Palestinian is on trial for the same
charge. Nizar Banat, 33, posted: “I curse the president on every occasion for political reasons.”
Human Rights lawyer Fareed Al-Atrash said
the Palestinian judiciary applied a Jordanian law
that criminalizes cursing the King.
Coroner: Alabama hostagetaker shot multiple times
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama
coroner says the body of a man who held a
5-year-old hostage for nearly a week before being
killed in a shootout with the FBI received ‘multiple gunshot wounds.’ Dale County Coroner
Woodrow Hilboldt said he was allowed into the
bunker where Jimmy Lee Dykes lay Wednesday
evening and pronounced him dead at 8:58 p.m.
Hilboldt said Dykes’ body had “multiple gunshot wounds,” but he declined to give the exact
number of wounds or where on his body he had
been shot.
Continued from page B9
The coroner said Thursday that Dykes’ body
was taken to a state forensics laboratory in Montgomery for an autopsy.
Cops: Pocket dial and a low
battery led to Ohio burglar
SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in Ohio
say a pocket-dialing prowler got himself arrested
after his cellphone turned informant. Twice.
Investigators say an emergency operator
traced an accidental 911 call on Tuesday night
to a home in Sidney, about 60 miles northwest of
Columbus. Shelby County sheriff’s deputies dispatched to check on the house found a window
forced open. They arrested Douglas Wolaver, of
Piqua, inside. The sheriff’s office says Wolaver
was found in a bathroom after his phone’s lowbattery alert led deputies to his hiding place.
Wolaver is charged with breaking and entering.
A phone listing for him was disconnected.
Workers vote to end 11-day
trash strike in Spain
MADRID (AP) — Trash collectors in Seville
have voted to end a strike that lasted 11 days and
left the sidewalks of the popular tourist destination reeking with piles of garbage.
Street cleaners accepted a deal negotiated by
their union with the cleaning company Thursday.
City authorities estimate there are some 7,000
tons of rubbish-filled bags lying around the ancient
city. A minimum level of services required by law
has meant some 20 percent of the city’s trash has
been collected since the strike began.
Seville is the capital of the southern region
of Andalusia. It is best known for its flamenco
music and monuments including the city cathedral, the Alcazar fortress and the Golden Tower.
Mexican teen shot 8 times
or more at Ariz. border
PHOENIX (AP) — An autopsy report indicates a Mexican teen who apparently was shot to
death by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in October
was struck by at least eight bullets, all but one
hitting him in the back.
The report, provided to The Associated Press
on Thursday by an attorney for the 16-year-old
boy’s family, was conducted by medical examiners in Mexico and describes several other
wounds, but it’s unclear if they account for additional bullets, graze wounds or shrapnel.
The attorney, Luis Parra, said he believes the
report bolsters his contention that the Border
Patrol used excessive force in gunning down
Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez. The family is
considering a lawsuit.
“I’m not saying it’s a clear case of excessive
force, but it is a very strong case for excessive
use of force,” Parra said.
“The Border Patrol agent who was firing
could have easily taken cover.”

Police: NY mom used kiss
to give jailed son drugs
PENN YAN, N.Y. (AP) — Police say an
upstate New York woman passed drugs to her son
while kissing him when she visited him in jail.
Sheriff’s deputies in Yates County tell local media
outlets 54-year-old Penn Yan resident Kimberly
Margeson was visiting her son last week when
she hid oxycodone pills and passed them from
her mouth to his while giving him a kiss. Police
haven’t said how the drugs were discovered.
Margeson pleaded not guilty Tuesday to
charges of criminal sale of a controlled substance
and promoting prison contraband. She’s free
after posting bail. Authorities say her 30-yearold son also was charged with promoting prison
contraband. He remains in jail on an unrelated
felony weapon possession charge, and a lawyer
for him couldn’t be contacted.
Tenn. man quits job after
‘666’ stamped on W-2 form
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee
maintenance worker says he quit his job because
his W-2 tax form was stamped with the number
666. Walter Slonopas told The Tennessean that
accepting the number would have condemned
his soul to hell. That number is considered the
“mark of the beast” in the Bible’s Book of Revelation describing the apocalypse.
The company that handles payroll for Contech Casting LLC says the number meant Slonopas’ form was the 666th one mailed out.
The 52-year-old Slonopas says he had trouble
with the number before. He was supposed to be
assigned No. 668 to use when he clocked in.
Because of a mix-up, he was assigned 666. He
complained and got a new number. A company
spokesman says Contech would send a new W-2
and wants to rehire Slonopas. But Slonopas says
“God is worth more than money.”
Mali: French troops begin
withdrawal from Timbuktu
TIMBUKTU, Mali (AP) — French troops
began to withdraw from Timbuktu Thursday
after securing the fabled city as they ramped
up their mission in another northern Mali city,
searching for Islamic extremists who may be
mixing among the local population.
French military spokesman Col. Thierry Burkhard said Thursday that the operation to secure
Gao is still under way, nearly two weeks after
French and Malian troops moved into the area. New
clashes nearby raised questions about how solid a
hold the French military has on the strategic area.
There is a risk of “residual presence” of terrorists mixed among the population, Burkhard said
from Paris. Extremists fired rocket launchers at
French troops near Gao on Tuesday.

Facebook video overturns
parking ticket in Israel
JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli woman has
turned to Facebook to beat a parking ticket — and
expose a Tel Aviv road crew. Hila Ben Baruch
says she parked her car legally near her Tel Aviv
home only to find it gone and replaced with a
handicapped parking sign. City Hall slapped her
with more than $300 in fines. Making matters
worse, she says a city representative accused her
of lying when she called to complain.
Determined to prove her innocence, she
obtained footage from a security camera showing
municipal workers painting the handicapped
symbol under her car, then towing the vehicle
away. She told Channel 2 she was “shocked.”
The video, put on Facebook, has gone viral.
The Tel Aviv municipality has apologized
and refunded the fines.
12-year-old boy charged
in Ashton Kutcher hoax
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A 12-year-old boy
accused of making a prank call that sent police
racing to Ashton Kutcher’s home was charged
Thursday with making that call and another that
falsely reported an emergency at a bank.
Prosecutors said the boy called 911 in October
reporting that armed men were inside Kutcher’s
Los Angeles home. That call brought out many
heavily-armed officers and prompted the actor to
leave the set of “Two and a Half Men” to make
sure his home and workers were safe. A week
later, a call reporting an emergency at a bank on
Wilshire Blvd. also proved to be a hoax. The district attorney’s office said that the boy has been
charged with two felony counts of computer intrusion and making fake bomb threats. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in juvenile court.
Closed hearings to continue
in the Chandra Levy case
WASHINGTON (AP) — A judge has ruled
that hearings in the 2001 Chandra Levy murder
case will continue to be closed to the public and
the news media. The hearings have been held
behind closed doors over the last several weeks
and could signal a problem with the prosecution.
Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant from
El Salvador, was convicted of Levy’s murder in
2010 and is serving a 60-year prison sentence.
Levy was a Washington intern whose murder
went unsolved for years and captivated the
public because of her romantic relationship with
a California congressman.

Ex-LA cop, murder suspect
sent CNN anchor parcel
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Law enforcement officials are
inspecting a package CNN’s Anderson Cooper received from
a former Los Angeles police officer who allegedly killed three
in a shooting spree. CNN spokeswoman Shimrit Sheetrit said
Thursday that a parcel containing a note, a DVD and a bullet holeriddled memento were sent by Christopher Dorner and addressed
to Cooper’s office.
LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith says LAPD robbery-homicide
detectives will inspect the package for clues. The package arrived
Feb. 1, days before the first two killings Dorner is accused of.
It contained a note on it that read, in part, “I never lied.”
Dorner was fired from the LAPD in 2008 for making false
statements. A coin typically given out as a souvenir by the police
chief was also in the package, and riddled with bullet holes.
Camel OK after enclosure
escape, clipped by van
CONCORD, Calif. (AP) — Officials believe a camel that
escaped its enclosure twice Tuesday before being clipped by a
minivan probably just wanted to be around some other animals.
The Contra Costa Times reports the single-humped camel
was hit by the van as it walked along a road in Concord around
6:45 p.m. Tuesday. It was the second time Tuesday the 10-yearold camel named “Phil” escaped its enclosure. Earlier in the day
citizens helped California Highway Patrol officers shepherd the
camel off the roadway. Raymond Ferrante — a land manager for
a company overseeing property where the camel is being kept —
says UC Davis veterinarians have examined it and said the camel
did not suffer any broken bones, or other injuries.
Ferrante says because camels are “very social” he believes
that’s why Phil escaped its enclosure twice in one day.
Syrian soldiers dance to
Usher in online video
BEIRUT (AP) — A video posted online purportedly shows
Syrian soldiers taking a break from the country’s civil war by
bopping around to American R&B star Usher’s hit song “Yeah!”
The soldiers dressed in camouflage combat gear — some
armed with automatic rifles or rocket-propelled grenades poking
out of their flak jackets — form a conga line and shimmy past the
camera grinning. Near the end of the video, they stop dancing and
break into their version of an oft-heard battle chant in the Middle
East: “With our souls, our blood, we sacrifice for you Bashar!” as
black smoke billows from a building in the background. In a jarring finale, they shoot bursts of automatic gunfire in the air.
The video, allegedly filmed in southern Syria, appeared to be
authentic and the uniforms consistent with those worn by Syrian
soldiers. It appeared on both pro-regime social networking sites
and anti-regime YouTube channels, as is normal for such material.
Peru: At least 50 sea lions poisoned
LIMA, Peru (AP) — Peruvian authorities say at least 50 sea
lions have been intentionally poisoned with fish laced with insecticides since mid-January off a single beach.
The Production Ministry said Thursday that lab testing confirmed the poisoning. The ministry oversees Peru’s fishing
industry and its ocean institute IMARPE examined the sea lion
corpses, which were found on Bodegones beach in the northern
state of Lambayeque beginning Jan. 13.
The ministry says it has asked Peru’s environmental investigations agency to look into the killings. Carlos Yaipen of the
nonprofit ORCA conservation group blames the problem on
the government, saying official negligence allows unscrupulous
fishermen to kill marine animals they perceive as competitors.
Yaipen cited as one example the November 2009 killing of 350
sea lions off Colan beach in the northern region of Piura.
FBI: Fugitive ex-LA cop not found in Vegas
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former Los Angeles police officer
wanted in three killings in Southern California was not found
when authorities served a warrant at his Las Vegas-area home
Thursday, an FBI spokesman said.
Agent Patrick Turner said he could not immediately disclose
whether other evidence has been found in Christopher Dorner’s
two-story home nine miles southwest of the Las Vegas Strip.
SWAT teams from the FBI and local police agencies sealed
off the neighborhood before entering the beige stucco home
shortly after 4 p.m. Dorner is suspected of killing a couple over
the weekend in Orange County and killing a police officer early
Thursday in Riverside.
A manhunt in three states and Mexico is now focusing in Big
Bear Lake, about 200 miles west of Las Vegas. That’s where
police found Dorner’s burned-out pickup truck.
Law enforcement officers remained at Dorner’s Las Vegas
home after the initial search. As night fell, agents wearing FBI
jackets hauled boxes of items out of the house and loaded them in
a truck under the watchful eyes of armed officers.
Onlookers were kept about three houses away.
Big Island police arrest
man for Hilo shooting
HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Big Island police
have arrested a 55-year-old man for allegedly
murdering a Hilo man late last year.
Police said Thursday they arrested Mark
Anthony Whyne on suspicion of second-degree
murder. They also arrested him for allegedly
using a firearm to commit another felony.
Police say they were already holding
Whyne for three alleged firearms offenses
before his arrest on the on the latest charges
Wednesday.
Officers found Faatetai Fiu with gunshot
wounds at Mooheau Park in Hilo on Dec. 29.
An autopsy determined Fiu died from a loss
of blood. Detectives are awaiting additional
toxicology reports from the medical examiner’s office.
Whyne is being held at the Hilo police cellblock. The Hilo public defender’s office says
Whyne does not yet have an attorney.
Hawaii lawmakers move
forward with anti-GMO bill
HONOLULU (AP) — Advocates of allnatural food in Hawaii scored a partial victory
when the House Committee on Agriculture
passed a measure to require labeling on genetically modified food.
The committee approved the bill Thursday
but amended it so it only applies to produce
imported from outside Hawaii.
Numerous proponents of the bill testified
before the House committee this week. They
say they deserve to know whether the food they
are buying has been genetically modified.
Several opponents of the bill said they are
worried about how the measure could affect
local farmers. They also argue that requiring
labels would increase food costs.
House agriculture committee Chairwoman Jessica Wooley says because the bill
only affects produce brought in from outside
Hawaii, it benefits local farms and won’t cause
food prices to rise.
Oregon man dies of
injuries in auto accident
LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — Kauai police say a
76-year-old Oregon man has died from injuries
sustained in an auto accident.
Police say the two-car collision occurred
shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday in Kapaa on
the Kuhio Highway.
Police say the man from Oregon, whose
name has not been released, was a passenger
in a car that was on the northbound shoulder of
the road. The car was trying to enter the northbound lane when a truck, heading north struck
it on the driver’s side.
Both the man and the 71-year-old female
driver were taken to Wilcox Hospital. The
driver was reported in stable condition. The
driver of the truck was not injured.
The fatality is the first on Kauai this year.
Hawaii offers grants for
tsunami debris removal
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii is offering
$100,000 in grants to people with proposals for
removing ocean trash, particularly debris generated by tsunamis that hit Japan in 2011.
The state Department of Health said
Thursday it’s seeking proposals from individuals, community groups, nonprofit organizations and others. It says the proposals should
focus on geographic areas of Hawaii that typically have the most marine debris.
March 8 is the deadline for proposals.
The grants are funded by $50,000 from the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and matching money from the state
Department of Land and Natural Resources.
NOAA last year gave Hawaii and four other
states a total of $250,000 to help with tsunami
debris removal.
A blue plastic bin, a small boat and other
debris from the tsunamis have shown up in
Hawaii.
Tourists robbed
at Big Island park
HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Two tourists
camping at a beach park on the Big Island in
Hawaii were robbed.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald says the two
tourists from California told police they were
robbed at knifepoint early Wednesday at Kolekole Beach Park.
The two told police they were in their tent
at the park north of Hilo when they were awakened by an intruder with a switchblade who
first claimed to be a ranger as he rifled through
their things.
The two said the intruder threatened to cut
them with the knife if they did not turn over
the keys to their rental car with all their belongings, including their wallets, their credit cards
and cellphones.
The rental car was later found abandoned in
Wainaku.
Hawaii representatives mull
marijuana legislation
HONOLULU (AP) — A proposal to legalize
recreational marijuana use in Hawaii is facing
its first hurdle as the House judiciary committee
decides whether to move the bill forward.
Lawmakers on Thursday postponed a decision until next week to adjust the proposal.
House judiciary committee Chair Karl
Rhoads told the Associated Press he plans to
push decision making back again until next
Tuesday.
He says he needs more time to add amendments regulating where people would be able
to light up and addressing technicalities.
Proponents say legalization would help
Hawaii’s economy and save money in the
criminal justice system.
Law enforcement officials say they strongly
oppose the bill.
They say they aren’t wasting resources on
marijuana now and that legalization would lead
to higher crime rates.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Allegiant Air
starts non-stop flights Saturday from Spokane

Allegiant follows a business model of jetting leisure travelers from smaller cities like
Spokane to top vacation destinations.
Hawaii to repave Hapuna
park parking areas
HONOLULU (AP) — The state Department
of Land and Natural Resources plans to begin
repaving parts of parking areas at Hapuna
Beach State Park.
The three-month project at the Big Island
park begins Monday. It will remove existing
asphalt, repair road shoulders and install new
asphalt.
The park will remain open while the work is
being done, but some areas will be closed for
safety reasons.
Work won’t be conducted on weekends.
Department Chairman William Aila said
Wednesday he appreciates the patience and
understanding of visitors and residents while
the work is completed.
The park is a south of Kawaihae along
Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

SAY IT ISN’T SEW By Henry Quarters
Happy Birthday: Take care of business.
Dealing with agencies, institutions and medical issues will be a must if you want to move
forward and accomplish your goals. Honesty,
integrity and sticking to facts and figures will
be the only way to make what you are working
toward count. There is no room for embellishment or excess. Take control. Your numbers are
6, 11, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Take note of and
greater interest in what everyone else is doing.
You will learn from what you see, giving you the
edge when it comes to your own projects. Move
forward cautiously if someone wants to partner
with you. Know your boundaries. ✸✸
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You can make
everyone take notice with your actions. Find a
way to improve a situation or a project and you
will be given more responsibility. Protect your
health and your position from someone jealous
of what you have personally or professionally.
relationships and you will come up with some
interesting thoughts and decisions as to how you
should move forward. Distance yourself from
those who offer nothing in return, leaving more
time to nurture meaningful partnerships.✸✸✸
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Put home and
family first. Loved ones will need your help, but
in the end what you gain from the experience
will be worthwhile. Playtime with the ones you
care most about will bring you closer together. A
lifestyle change looks appealing. ✸✸✸✸✸
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your actions
may be misconstrued. Explain what you are
trying to do and you will get far more support.
Make unusual alterations to your residence and
you will establish a position among friends and
family that carries more clout. ✸✸✸✸
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Choose
your words wisely and avoid letting someone
disrupt your plans. Stick close to home and to
your lover. Overindulgence must be avoided.
✸✸✸✸✸
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Temptation is the
enemy. You may feel the need to make changes,
but you are best to sit tight until your thinking is
clear. Do your best to add to your skills, knowledge and anything else that will enhance your
resume. ✸✸✸
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Learning, travel
and getting together with people you find interesting should be your focus. A closer look at
your financial situation will lead to an idea that
can help you collect on an old debt or turn a loss
into a gain. ✸✸✸
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You’ll thrive on adventure and excitement. Making changes that will
lead to professional opportunity should be your
intent. A geographical change will enhance what
you do and improve your prospects. Love is
highlighted. ✸✸✸
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Reassess your
✸✸✸
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Emotions
will cloud your view. Step back and collect your
thoughts. Use the outcome of similar situations
you have faced and you will find a way to get
past anyone acting erratic. Don’t make promises, but don’t rule out offering help. ✸✸✸
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Limitations
are apparent if you have not stuck to the rules
and regulations. Consider the changes you can
make to improve your life and your relationships
with the people you love. ✸✸✸
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Too much of
anything will lead to trouble. Keep a low profile and focus on making headway financially.
Secure your position by networking with people
able to contribute to your plans. Health issues
must be taken care of quickly. ✸✸✸✸
Birthday Baby: You are an opportunist;
focused and eager to get your way.
Dear Abby
by Abigail Van Buren
GRANDDAD WANTS TO FREE BOY FROM PARENTS’ PROTECTIVE BUBBLE
DEAR ABBY: When my 9-month-old grandson, “Eli,” comes to visit, I become frustrated to the
point of leaving the room, if not my house. Not only must we put away things he shouldn’t get into,
we must tape shut every drawer and cabinet, block access behind couches and chairs to keep Eli
from electrical cords, then constantly be on guard for the “unexpected.”
Eli is never restricted in any way, and would never be confined to an “inhumane” playpen for even
a few minutes. At the slightest whimper, he is picked up. He’s walked to sleep (or taken on car rides
to “soothe” him), and his parents literally run to him whenever he awakens.
I’m reluctant to criticize because I know they’ll be offended, but I’m aching to suggest they teach
the child about limits and restrictions and correct him when he misbehaves. Let him experience
being in his playpen or even allow him to whine a little before jumping at his every whim. We’re not
allowed to say “no-no” -- the preferred response being to distract Eli and let him go about doing as
he pleases. By the way, both parents are professional psycho-babble people.
Am I unreasonable to think my grandson is capable of learning limits with a simple “no-no” and,
perhaps, a little smack on his hand? Or should I keep my mouth shut? -- WELL-MEANING GRANDPA
DEAR GRANDPA: Well-meaning as you are, I doubt that you will be able to convince two “professional psycho-babble people” that by not giving their little one limits, they’re creating a monster.
Rather than allow his visits to upset you, I suggest you visit this family in their OWN home.

DEAR ABBY: I am shocked at the rude treatment I see many older mothers receive from their children. I spend considerable time at various doctor appointments. Fortunately, I can drive myself, but
many senior women must depend on their caregivers -- often their daughters -- who treat them badly.
I can’t help but wonder how they treat their mothers in private since they are so insensitive in public.
I’m grateful to have a daughter who puts up with my occasional crankiness and complaints. She
loves me unconditionally and takes wonderful care of me when needed.
I’d like to ask sons and daughters to be kinder and more patient with their elderly moms. They
won’t be around forever. -- GRATEFUL MOM IN PHOENIX
DEAR GRATEFUL: I wish you had described more clearly the interactions you observed. What
you saw may not have been a lack of devotion to their mothers, but signs of caregiver stress or
burnout. Daughters (and sons) caught in the sandwich generation -- earning a living and caring for
their children as well as their aged parents -- are not always at their best. However, you are correct.
These frail, elderly parents need compassion and patience because they won’t be around forever.
