“People come out here wanting a
Western experience. And when they’re
horseback, riding in these foothills of
rolling grasses, when all they can hear
is the sound of birds and the breeze,
they get a taste of what life might have
been like in the 1880s. It’s nature’s way
of calming people, and slowing things
down. Within a mile of leaving the
ranch, you don’t see anything else out
there but maybe a fence line. I just love
the beauty of it, and the quiet of being
out there on a horse.”

things that keeps her here is the rich history of family and

to incorporating her new studies in Equine Training and
Psychotherapy into her daily rides and Self Discovery Camps

A
ny local will tell you, Red Lodge is a hard
place to leave. What do you think we’re
all doing here, anyway? (Of course, there
are those stories of the guy who ran out of
gas at the bottom of the hill and has been
here ever since…but that’s not normal.) Luckily for you,
however, Red Lodge has got hotels and guesthouses galore,
to make staying that one more day oh-so-easy.
Whether you’re looking for the peace and quiet of a
secluded mountain hideaway, or want to stay right
downtown in the middle of it all, Red Lodge has got
accommodations to fit your style and budget.
Live like a local in your own restored Victorian home,
or get to know your hosts by staying at a charming B&B.
Or, if golf is more your thing, the views from the tee-side
condominiums just might make you want to extend your
stay indefinitely. Whatever your style, there’s someone here
just waiting to accommodate you.

During the early 1900s, Finnish immigrants made up 1/4th of Red Lodge’s
population. They brought many of their traditions to the new country,
including the Sauna: a public bath house. The advertised rate was 15 cents
if the proprietor furnished a towel; 10 cents if not. The saunas were popular
among all nationalities, but when the Finnish saunas closed, none were ever
opened in their place. For a tour of Finn Town which will point out several nolonger-operating sauna buildings, check out the Historical Society’s Walking
Tour (see page 38 for more information).

“For me, the main attraction has
always been the mountains and the
backcountry. My family has been in this
area since the ‘20s, and I came out here
every summer since I was 3. That made
a big impact on me; when I was out of
high school, getting back here was the
first thing on my mind. My ideal day
would be to finish all my work by 8:30
in the morning, and go guide clients
in the mountains all day. I love the
climate, I love the snow, I get out into
the mountains all summer long, and
I hunt in the fall. The country is more
meaningful to me than anything. And
I plan on living here,…well, until they
kick me out!”

“Best thing about Red Lodge Mountain

O
ne thing you have to know about Red
Lodge is that it’s got a serious sense of
Play. Peek into any garage or mudroom in
town, and you’re sure to find an old pair
of skis or six (the new ones are carefully
stowed in the living room), several pairs of muddy hiking
boots, tackle boxes spilling lures and line, motorcycle
helmets, bicycles, ice skates, and a pile of dog-chewed folf
discs. And those are just the toys we used last week!
Living here is all about tackling the Great Outdoors, and
we make it easy for you to join in the fun. Just ask your
waiter or hotel clerk where they go when they’ve got an
hour free (or a day, or a week!), and you’re sure to get an
insider’s peek into the best there is.
And for those of you who can’t wait that long, allow us
to whet your Adventure Appetite with a couple of our
favorites: For the story you won’t quit telling, it doesn’t get
better than the hair-raising, guardrail-free, are-you-surewe’re-gonna-make-it climb up to Hellroaring Plateau at
elevation 10,000 ft-plus. Or if you’re more of the ask-amillion-questions-along-the-way type, hook up with a
guide from the following pages, and prepare yourself to get
personal with your new favorite playground.

Hotel, determined
to secure funding
for a new road over
the Beartooth Mountains and into the Cooke City gold fields. Among
those present was Oliver H.P. Shelley, then publisher of the Carbon
County News, and Dr. J.C.F. Siegfriedt. Both men made numerous
trips to Washington, D.C. for the project. In 1926, their bill passed the
Senate but died in the House. Finally, Montana senator Scott Leavitt
was able to push the bill through Congress in 1931. When President
Herbert Hoover finally signed the bill, “the announcement touched off
the greatest celebration this mining town has ever known,” wrote the
Billings Gazette.
Upon completion, one of the road’s unusual features was the intention
to curtail gas stations, “hot dog stands,” summer homes, and hotels.
Additionally, no side roads were planned, so that the country could
retain its “primitive character.”

WILDLIFE WATCHING
The Beartooth Mountains are home
to Grizzly and Black Bears, as well as
elk, deer, moose, Bighorn Sheep, Rocky
Mountain Goats, Mountain Lions and
Bobcats. While many of these creatures
are elusive, some, like moose, deer and
the occasional Black Bear,
seem to make a point of
strolling through town from
time to time. Remember to
keep a respectful – and safe
– distance between you and
our wild neighbors.

Highway IN the Sky…
Dubbed “the most beautiful roadway
in America” by On the Road
correspondent Charles Kuralt, the
Beartooth Highway climbs to an
astounding 10,947 feet above sea
level. As it winds its way from Red
Lodge to Yellowstone National Park,
the Highway traverses an impressive
range of ecosystems – from lush lodge
pole pine forests to alpine tundra.
At the highway’s summit, travelers
find themselves in a sky-high world
of glacial cirques, clear
alpine lakes, and snow that
lingers through the summer
months. In late June and July,
the fragile tundra blossoms in
a lavish display of wildflowers
– shooting stars, columbine,
and Indian paintbrush, to
name a few.
With 20 peaks over 12,000 feet
in elevation (including Granite Peak,
Montana’s highest at 12,799 feet), the
Beartooth Mountains lie within the
943,377-acre Absaroka-Beartooth
Wilderness. Grizzly and black bears
make their home here, as do elk,
deer, moose, bighorn sheep, Rocky
Mountain goats, mountain lions and
bobcats. With over 950 alpine lakes
and hundreds of miles of trails, these
mountains offer ample opportunities
for recreation – much of it accessible
from the Beartooth Highway.
Plan on at least three hours driving time
to make the trip between Yellowstone
and Red Lodge – more if you really
want to experience the beauty of the
Absaroka-Beartooth Range. Whether
or not you plan to stop and explore a
while on your way, be sure to pack your
windbreaker and woolens for the trip:
it can be a bit nippy at the summit of
Yellowstone’s own Highway to the Sky.

“After the [Yellowstone Park] fires of ‘88,
there were no tourists coming through
here. We were sitting around thinking,
We’ve got to do something to keep the
doors open. So somebody said Why don’t
you race pigs? Well, we all had a laugh
over that, and later I started thinking
about it and decided it couldn’t be that
tough. So we built a pig track, and ran
it with what turned out to be illegal
gambling, but it sounded good at the
time. So then we found out it would be
legal as long as we gave the money away
as a fundraiser. But then the board of
horseracing came back claiming we
weren’t legal because I didn’t have any
jockey insurance! Well, when you’re
racing pigs, you sure don’t need jockey
insurance. Anyway, when they got done
with it, it was legal to race pigs, gerbils
or hamsters. So I stuck with pigs. And
over the years, we’ve donated $77,000 in
scholarship money to local kids.”

Pits DeArmond and his wife Lynn have owned the

addition to introducing pig racing to Bearcreek, Pits has
also taken his turn as the city’s Councilman (19 years)
and now Mayor (9 years). For the past 15 years during
the saloon’s off-season, he worked as a traveling “Bovine

And never one to enjoy time on his hands, he also builds fly

n Red Lodge, eating out gives whole a new
meaning to the term: contact sport. It’s not that
your waiter is going to tackle you at the table or
arm-wrestle you for the bill, though that has been
known to happen. But most of the time, eating
out is what locals do to connect with each other. And more
often that not, we’ll extend that to include you.
Strike up a conversation with Lee and Teresa’s table of 8
on Friday nights, or Don’s entourage at the high tables
any night of the week. Because whether your tastes are
more burgers-n-fries or bouillabaisse, you’re sure to find
welcome smiles and genuine hospitality wherever you go.
Dig into succulent steak, or clam chowder you’ll dream
about for months. And make sure to ask your waiter to
match it up with the perfect wine. Or, if all that decisionmaking is too much for you, do as the locals do: open the
menu, close your eyes, and point – because every place in
town has truly got that local stamp-of-approval.
The Red Lodge
Café itself is a
little piece of
history. Its sign,
with its flashing
red 12-foot-high
tipi and dancing
Indians, dates
from 1948, when
the local economy
was starting to shift
toward tourism once the mines had all closed. The murals on the walls
inside were painted by a character named O.J. Salo, one of Red Lodge’s
original mountaineers.
After service in World War I, Salo worked as a guide and horse wrangler
at Camp Senia, the area’s first dude ranch. In the ‘20s and ‘30s he
explored the Beartooths, stocking many lakes with fish and naming
numerous features, including Lake Gertrude (near Timberline Lake) for
his wife. In 1961 climbers from the University of Wyoming gave Salo’s
name to a prominent peak in the Beartooths which is still so hard to get
to that few ever reach its summit. Many of the places depicted in his
murals look much the same now as they had in his time.

“The best thing that ever happened to
Red Lodge was Nothing. For about
70 years. That’s why we have this
authentic, wonderful little town. In all
of my travels - I’ve always compared
everywhere I’ve been to Red Lodge. And
the more places I go, the more it becomes
apparent that this is just a really, really
special place on the planet. For me, it’s
all about the landscape – there’s no
place that smells like Rock Creek, with
the Aspens and the Cottonwoods…it’s
just so clean. I first came to Red Lodge
when I was 8 years old and I fell in love.
I thought ‘I’ve never been anywhere as
honest, or as beautiful, and just magical
as this place’.”

ike a lot of mining boom towns, Red
Lodge has seen its share of charlatans and
miscreants, though these days we like to call
them “characters” or “creative types.” It must
be something in the air, or in that crystalclear water, for this area has always attracted people with
their own creative take on the world.
From last century’s sheriff who – legend has it – made a
name for himself by eating the livers of his foes, to today’s
internationally acclaimed artist, famous for his paintings
from Crow culture, Red Lodge art and history have long
made their stamp on the West.
Catch the spirit of today at one of the many art and

wild. But keep a sharp eye out: you might even meet a
“character” or two along the way.

History
There are a lot of legends
from the past that need simply to be
taken for granted and not scrutinized
too closely. The legend of John “Liver
Eatin’” Johnston is a good example.
Here’s a guy who reportedly earned his
nickname by carving out and eating the
livers of men who harmed him. Among
his many frontier exploits, he served
as the Red Lodge deputy sheriff for a
period of time just before the turn
of the century. The sheriff ’s gig
was probably easy compared to
all that carving and eating – only
his close friends knew for sure.
Still, he gets a nod for originality
and his log cabin now stands next
to the Red Lodge Visitor’s Center
on the north end of town.

For those of you wanting to explore Red Lodge’s historically rich neighborhoods
up close, a self-guided walking tour is available thanks to the Carbon County
Historical Society. The tour will take you to the site of the Sundance Kid’s
1897 bank robbery. It will teach you about the town’s mining boom and the
bootlegging heyday that followed the bust. It will guide you to the Victorian
“castles” of the Hi Bug district and to the once glorious Theatorium decorated
with marble statues imported from Italy. With neighborhoods dubbed “Little
Italy” and “Finn Town,” and many buildings on the National Historic Register,
Red Lodge is a fascinating place to explore.

38 W W W. R E D LO D G E. CO M
By the way, how did the town of Red
Lodge get its name? One theory
stems from the fact that Crow
Indians used this part of the
country as a summer camp.
They came to worship, rest
and hunt – apparently living in
lodges that were colored red. For
the other couple of theories and
some accurate information, visit
the Carbon County Historical
Museum – conveniently located
on Broadway and staffed by
people who have read their history
books.
We know that Red Lodge was officially
established in 1884. Shortly after, in
1887, the Rocky Fork Coal Company
opened the area’s first (coal) mine.
Commuting to work wasn’t easy in the
late 1800’s, so European immigrants
moved here by the hundreds. Finns,
Scots, Irish, Italians, Slavs and a few
other nationalities settled in to a
frontier way of life. They brought
civilization and common sense to
an otherwise bleak landscape. Red
DESTINATION RED LODGE
Lodge entered a period of economic
wealth and questionable behavior,
boasting as many as 20 saloons when
population numbers peaked.
All that money was bound to
attract some interest, so in 1897 the
Sundance Kid and a few friends decided
to rob the Red Lodge Bank. Guests
of the Pollard Hotel across the street
witnessed the event, which gave new
meaning to the claim of “entertainment
nightly.” Not that this was anything new
to some of the characters listed on the
hotel’s historic guest register – Buffalo
Bill Cody and Calamity Jane among
them.

Many good things come to an end at
some point, and so did the coal mining
boom. The West Side Mine closed
in 1924, followed by more closures
during the Great Depression. Finally an
underground explosion at the Smith
Mine near Bearcreek killed 74 men in
1943 and the era was over.
Showing their entrepreneurial spirit,
the local citizenry responded to
circumstances created by Prohibition
and developed their own brand of
bootleg liquor. Known as “cough syrup,”
the concoction replaced
coal as the town’s economic
mainstay, supplying “patients”
from the Midwest to California.
Just in time and at an appropriate
juncture, it became apparent that
people wanted to come here to take
a look around and have some fun.
Tourism, recreation and ranching
became the area’s primary means of
support, and they still are today. The
next chapter is up to you!

For an often-overlooked example of this, walk into most any of the shops
along Broadway, and look up. Those pressed-tin ceilings overhead were a
mainstay of Western architecture around the turn of the century. Ironically,
when the elaborately designed tin plates were first installed, massproduced metal ceilings were scoffed at by Eastern architectural critics.
Such “sheet iron elegance” was allegedly a “cheap, quick, and easy” attempt
to present a delusional façade of urbanity in backwater rural areas.

is no doubt that beaver fur is one of the softest and

“It’s a really peaceful, calm place to raise
kids. The town really does raise them;
there’s a lot of watchful eyes that take
care of the little guys. And we love the
opportunities there are for kids to do
so many great things – dance, soccer,
ski, hockey, backpacking, the list goes
on and on. The school system itself is
really good, and there are so many other
opportunities for them to learn. And the
kids love that it’s hard to choose what
to do on a weekend. We never hear the
word ‘bored’ at our house.”

We call it “the bug.” And you’ve just caught it. But don’t

In April 1910, the
Red Lodge Republican Picket enthusiastically
announced that “Red Lodge is going to have a big, modern, thoroughlyequipped brewery.” The mountain water attracted German brewer Fred
Lehrkind, whose family’s breweries had proved successful in Bozeman
as well as up the road in Silesia. The Lehrkinds were confident that the
growing population of thirsty miners and the excellent quality of their
beer assured its acceptance and promised a boon to the economy of
the town. The building was constructed of Fromberg brick at a cost of
$75,000 ($1.7 million in 2008), and produced 35,000 barrels of beer a
year, all of which was aged five months to make a proper German lager.
ciety
Prohibition closed the brewery down in 1919, and the building was
converted to a pea cannery in the 1920s. The cannery operated until the
mid-1970s, employing thousands of local farmers and cannery workers
over the years.

“I always brag that I came from the
Bronx. At that time, it was a great place
to live, but to end up here, well,…it
was about one of the nicest things that
could ever have happened. I fell into
being the JP [Justice of the Peace] and at
first, I was getting paid $3.50 per case.
I started doing weddings in my office,
but that wasn’t very nice. So sometimes,
we’d go to a friend of mine’s yard, which
ran up against the creek, and that was
where I got the idea to open the Chapel.
I bet I’ve married 2000 couples over the
years. Not long ago, there was a group of
six couples sitting together here in town,
and they got talking, and realized they’d
all been married by me!

Elaine Higgins grew up in the Bronx, New York and
graduated from Syracuse University before her husband’s
oil-company job brought the couple to Worland, Wyoming.
“We liked it so much we asked if we could stay,” she says.
They moved from Worland to Red Lodge in the early sixties
when the ski mountain was just opening and ran Piney Dell

when she remarried her present husband Buck at her own

out to celebrate with us!”

had just opened, the mines were in full swing,
and the town was bursting with optimism. A team
of investors created this grand three-story structure in 1920 at a cost of
$140,000 (over $1.5 million in 2008). The building had a seating capacity of
1,000 people for traveling shows, vaudeville and local productions. There
was also a dance hall in the basement. The inside was fantastical, with
marble statues imported from Italy, as well as decorative columns, arches
and cornices in the style of Louis XVI.
But after the Westside Mine closed in 1924, the building was used only
occasionally. In the 1930s it was converted to a distillery, and the garage
bays date from its post-World War II use as an automobile body shop.
Though the interior has been gutted, the whimsical façade ornamentation
including the gargoyle-like figures and theatrical cartouches are
unmatched by any theater in the state.

DESTINATION RED LODGE
Area Trips
Coal mines, Flying Pigs and
Banana Cream Pie
Follow Highway 308 up and out of Red
Lodge for a lovely bird’s eye view of
town and, beyond it, a wide sweep of
landscape that’s pure Montana:
snowcapped mountains,
verdant foothills and
forget-me-not skies.
Continue east
on 308 and the
scenery changes
entirely to the
thirsty, sagebrushdotted bluffs
and plateaus of
rattlesnake country.
Here you can see
clear to Wyoming
and the Pryor
and Bighorn
mountains that rim the horizon. Just
a few miles from Red Lodge are the
coal mines of Washoe and Bearcreek.
Markers offer geologic and historic
details, including the story of the Smith
Mine Disaster of 1942. Don’t miss the
pig races at the Bearcreek Saloon and
Steakhouse. Next door, at the Hungry
Bear Cafe, the banana cream pie is a hit.
Rolling Hills, Potters and the
Territory’s Biggest Burger
The drive west from Red Lodge on
Highway 78 to the tiny ranching
communities of Luther and Roscoe
takes you through the kind of lush
green country that’s the stuff of
postcards. Cows and horses graze
the hillsides and the mountains
seem close enough to reach
out and touch. There are no
services in Luther; still,
it’s worth the detour for
the views and the sweet
little schoolhouse. Home
to the famous Grizzly
Bar and its equally
famous fare, Roscoe is
also home to noted potters

The Loop Trip – Two lanes have
never looked this good!
Beginning and ending in Red Lodge,
“The Loop” follows two-lane highways
and byways through some of the
region’s loveliest scenery. Imagine
rolling green hills dotted with
cows, horses and sheep, wide
open spaces, sparkling rivers
and streams – all against the
grand and wild backdrop
of Montana’s highest peaks.
Along the way, you’ll find
interesting historical markers
and museums, funky galleries
and antiques shops, and
plenty of cafés and saloons.
The Loop follows Highway
78 west from Red
Lodge. The route
eventually takes you
north along the
Stillwater River to
the Yellowstone River
valley. From there it
travels east to Highway
212 and the Rock Creek
watershed and finally to Red
Lodge again. It can be driven
in just over two hours, but
don’t rush. This is the stuff
of postcards.
Cody, Wyoming – Cowboy
and Western History
Located only 65 miles from
Red Lodge, Cody, Wyoming
is the perfect day-trip for
those of you who want to hit the open
road and soak up a little bit of the
Wild West through the eyes of true
frontiersman and legend, Buffalo Bill.
Cody’s Buffalo Bill Historical Center
houses five museums that tell the whole
story of life in the “old-West”; The
Buffalo Bill Museum, The Whitney
Gallery of Western Art, The Plains
Indian Museum,
The Cody Firearms
Museum, and The
Draper Museum
of Natural History.
With all of these
great museums
under one roof,
Cody keeps
history alive and
promises fun for
the whole family.
The drive is sure to
be unforgettable,
with some of the
area’s most stunning
mountains framing
the scene just west of
the Belfry Hwy. Be
sure to stop by Maxwell’s
on Main Street on your way out of
town – the only thing better than the
cheesecake is the story behind the
restaurant itself.
