But by all accounts, Doc was a force of nature, and from the time he arrived here, he had his heart set on building a road that would connect this area with the wonderland of Yellowstone National Park. It took him seventeen years and countless thousands of dollars to make it happen, but this summer we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of his dream come true. Siegfriedt started out as a doctor for the mines in Bearcreek, and over the years served as mayor to both Bearcreek (5 terms) and Red Lodge (1937 until his death in 1940), as well as state senator for Carbon County (1920-24). Siegfriedt loved hunting, fishing and playing the zither (a stringed instrument likely brought to this area by Eastern European immigrants) and was a tireless promoter of the beauty of the Beartooths. FIRST ATTEMPT: BLACK AND WHITE TRAIL STARTING FROM BEARCREEK Doc’s first plan, hatched in the years before World War I, was to build a road from Billings through Bridger and Belfry and from there up the east side of Mount Maurice to Cooke City – bypassing Red Lodge. He called it the Black and White Trail, after a similar route found on early 1900s Forest Service maps. Ever the promoter, he assured supporters that Red Lodge would be able to connect to this road and benefit from the tourists that were sure to flood the area. In early July of 1919, he took advantage of a strike in the Bearcreek mines to get his project started. He and a volunteer crew of 7 men with 6 teams of horses 2 W W W.REDLODGE.COM © Merv Coleman built the first 2100 feet of road in four days. started That summer, they it.” The paper added that reached the saddle within a few years the just east of Mount hopelessness was clear Maurice in a total of to all but Siegfriedt and 13 switchbacks, which Shelley. are still faintly visible But the town continued from atop the Bearcreek to back them up. When the news reached Red Lodge that President Hoover had signed the bill, “the announcement touched off the greatest celebration this mining town has ever known,” wrote The Billings Gazette. The Act was written to appear generic, but it had so many specific qualifications that few roads would ever qualify for this funding. In fact, when the chosen route up the Rock Creek valley was surveyed a final time, it was discovered that even it didn’t qualify for the government funds: the Act allowed for roads of no more than 60 miles. When the Red Lodge-Cooke City route was finalized, it totalled 68.58 miles long. Further bureaucratic wrangling placed those extra 8.58 miles under the jurisdiction of the Forest Service, © Tom Egenes narrowly averting yet another major setback. MAKING LIFE COZY IN THE CONSTRUCTION CAMPS Once funding came through, the project was divided into sections and three construction companies set to work: Morrison-Knudsen from Boise, Idaho; McNutt and Pyle of Eugene, Oregon and The Winston Brothers from Minnesota. Morrison-Knudsen built the Red Lodge side from the base to the West Summit, and had their construction camp along Rock Creek at the spot now home to the M-K Campground. Their “camp” was more like a small city for the 170-plus men who lived there. It had a 5,000-watt electric plant that powered the 12 family cabins, along with the cookhouse, four bunkhouses, warehouses, toolhouses and other buildings and a string of street lights running down the center; there was also a water system set up with a faucet for every two cabins, and a central coalbin for camp use, all of which was included in the cost of rent. But for some men, that rent seemed high. Charles Barbiaux was one of several men who decided they weren’t going to pay the $1.35/day for room and board, and instead set up lean-to tents and tables in the woods. They slept near their tables to keep animals away from their food stores during the night, | BEARTOOTH HIGHWAY By the Numbers 68.58 10,947 10 135 5 20 19 2 1 total length of the Beartooth Highway in miles Highest elevation in feet Miles above treeline Average number of days open for traffic each year Years under construction: June 27, 1931 -June 14,1936) Number of lakes visible from the Summit Number of switchbacks Fatalities during construction Number of convenience stores/gas stations along the route and on days off they fished for food. Due to extreme conditions, the highway is only open Memorial Day weekend through early October. Contact the US Forest Service at 406-446-2103 or the Red Lodge Visitor’s Center at 888-281-0625 for opening and closing dates. It was as cheery and bright a home as anyone could ask for. We planted hardy flowers around our cabins and carried water to them religiously. The men fished in their idle moments and we had fish fries. On Sundays we would put up our lunch and go to one of the numerous small lakes and spend the day fishing and picnicking.” John Yurkovich recalled that despite the grueling work schedule, some men would hike the 15 miles into Red Lodge for a dance, returning by dawn the next day. On the plateau, that meant when the ground froze. But since the switchbacks were solid rock, frozen ground didn’t make a difference – only high winds, cold and snow shut the crew down. As Mrs. Knox tells it, “The last three days of August it snowed. After that, winter came fast and furious. The amount of clothing the men wore was almost unbelievable. How they could ever work after they got up on the job was a source of wonder to me. It was almost unbearable but time was getting short and the job had to be finished. My husband would come home at night almost frozen. His hands, after being clasped around the levers all day, could hardly be straightened out. He wore several pairs of gloves covered by a huge pair of leather sheep-lined mitts. After he dressed for work he moved about like a mechanical man, he was so stuffed.” In 1934, records show that the men were paid $1/hr for skilled labor, down to $.60/hour for unskilled. In bad winter weather, they got an additional ten cents per hour. The job started with the men clearing trees and brush with hand tools: hacksaws, picks, shovels. Then dynamiters came in and blasted rock away so the big power shovels could rough out the road. The blasted rock was either reused to build up sections of road, or carried off in dump trucks. Then with the help of more power shovels, bulldozers and scrapers, the road was finished off to the final grade. Tom Knox was a power shovel driver, and the man responsible for “Knox Point” or, as we know it today, Vista Point. Tom worked a Bucyrus Erie steam shovel, like the kind used to dig the Panama Canal. But by the time Tom’s Erie found its way from Yellowstone Park road construction to the Beartooth Highway job, it was already ancient. His crewmembers nicknamed it the “Tomato Can,” but Tom seemed proud of the beast. In his wife’s memoir, “They had battled their way through many a rock cut together, always coming out with a good yardage at the end of the shift.” Tom felt particularly proud when the company’s brand-new steam shovel broke down under heavy work and the Tomato Can was called in to finish the job. The brand-new shovel was then dubbed “White Elephant,” with some prankster even painting a white elephant on the side. OPENING DAY In the summer of 1935 more than 14,000 people visited Knox Point, even though the road wouldn’t officially open until June 14 of the next year. When it did open at a total cost of $1.25 million, it entered the ranks of America’s engineering marvels like San Francisco’s Golden Gate and Bay Bridges and the Hoover Dam. Few who drive it can ever forget its scenic vistas, sheer drop-offs, and miles of alpine beauty. (Information courtesy Carbon County Historical Society and Museum.) D ES TINATIO N RED LO D G E | BEARTOOTH HIGHWAY stories, it often comes with its share of scrapes and notoriety. Jim Avent, past crewmember, related one of those mishaps. “Four to 5 feet came down in June and we had to go up by the state line because there were some tourists stranded. On top there was a snow pole and I chose the wrong side of it – and went off. That truck stayed there four or five days, I think, before we could get it out.” He added that normally the poles show some remnant of the road, but they’re not always intact by the time the crew gets up there. © Merv Coleman TOURISTS FLOCK TO THE NEW RED LODGE HIGH ROAD Railroads and National Parks go together in our history like peanut butter & jelly. The Union Pacific Railroad had seen its business skyrocket when Yosemite was set aside as a national Preserve in the 1860s, so when the 1870 Washburn survey came in describing Yellowstone’s unique features and stunning grandeur, Northern Pacific financier Jay Cooke began his relentless lobby for the creation of Yellowstone as a tourist destination for his future passengers. bus traffic in and around the Park declined. The buses were sold at auction and have landed in private collections around the country. You can still see some of the original buses around Red Lodge in the summertime. A group of private owners have formed an historic preservation trust to keep this fun piece of history alive. Watch for them on display in parades and at special events throughout the year. Tourists would board the train in Minneapolis, and when they got to one of the Park’s gateway cities, they’d be able to choose a 3½ to 4 day bus tour of Yellowstone. With the opening of the Beartooth Highway, though, rail visitors were still 68 miles from the Park. So both the railroad company and the Park Service had buses that would pick up passengers at Red Lodge’s depot and take them over the pass to the top of the world and into Yellowstone. In 1938, Northern Pacific advertised to its Park customers, “Experience the new Red Lodge Entrance.... It’s the talk of the country.” Their one-day “Red Lodge High Road” tour cost $4. OPENING THE ROAD FOR SUMMER TRAFFIC TAKES NERVES OF STEEL Have you ever wondered about those tall, narrow poles attached to the road markers all along the Highway? They’re snow poles, and they mark where the road is. Easy ‘nuf. But can you imagine what it must be like, going up there to clear the road in a 3-ton snowplow, when all you can see in any direction is white, and all you’ve got are those teensy markers to show you where to go? The Highway snowplow crew out of Carbon County is not a faint-hearted lot. When asked how they manage to find the road each spring, they laugh and say “from experience.” But how do they get that experience? Based on their grins and half-told When people started driving their own cars more and more after World War II, Jim went on to say that “Randy Baum [ex-supervisor] taught Shawn Mains and me the dos and don’ts of this machine when we took over for him.” Namely, Stay away ffrom the edge! “You start up high on the © Merv Coleman inside, and knock the snow down to 6-8 feet.” The winter of ’96-’97 was an especially heavy snow year, and Jim remembered that “knocking the snow down” under those conditions meant climbing the Caterpillar up on top of a 43-foot drift overlooking the abyss with no definition of a road and pushing snow toward the edge of the cliff and off. Then backing up and doing it again. Through 35 feet of snow. “When you’re opening it with the Cat, it’ll get your adrenaline going,” Jim says. “You keep pushing the snow out to the edge, and when you’re sitting on that new snow and it settles – even just 3 or 4 inches – sheesh! You don’t forget that right away.” He went a little bit white just talking about it. When they get it knocked down to 6 or 8 feet deep – the height of the snow poles – they bring up the blower and, like you do with your snowblower on your front sidewalk, chuck the rest out of the way. For skiers from Cody to Kalispell and beyond, Opening Day on the Highway means more than pretty scenery: it means time to load up the skis and tackle some of the steepest, wildest, openest backcountry terrain in the Lower 48. Ever since construction crews first granted access to this high country in 1931, skiers have flocked to its steep headwalls and narrow chutes to make the most of the late-season snow. In the early ‘30s, the favorite spot was above Dead Man’s Curve, overlooking Long Lake. (Skiers now use this point to access the legendary Reefer Ridge.) Later, a primitive tow rope was installed on Gardner Headwall, which is still one of the favorite spots for getting in some | RECREATION quick turns. If you’re willing to hike it out, that is. But if you’re not a hiker the Red Lodge International Ski and Snowboard Camp, with its permanent lift at Twin Lakes Headwall is the place for you. From Sheriff Liver Eatin’ Johnston who – legend has it – made a name for himself by eating the livers of his foes, to today’s internationally acclaimed artist Kevin Red Star, famous for his paintings from Crow culture, Red Lodge art and history have long made their stamp on the West. The legend of John “Liver Eatin’” Johnston is a good example. Here’s a guy who reportedly earned his nickname by carving out and eating the livers of men who harmed him. Among his many frontier exploits, he served as the Red Lodge deputy sheriff for a period of time just before the turn of the century. The sheriff ’s gig was probably easy compared to all that carving and eating – only his close friends knew for sure. Still, he gets a nod for originality and his log cabin now stands next to the Red Lodge Visitor’s Center on the north end of town. By the way, how did the town of Red Lodge get its name? One theory stems from the fact that Crow Indians used this part of the country as a summer camp. They came to worship, rest and hunt – apparently living in lodges that were colored red. Finns, Scots, Irish, Italians, Slavs and a few other nationalities settled in to a frontier way of life. They brought civilization and common sense to an otherwise tered a bleak landscape. Red Lodge entered period of economic wealth andd questionable behavior, boastingg as many as 20 saloons when population numbers peaked. All that money was bound to the attract some interest, so in 18977 the Sundance Kid and a few friends decided to rob the Red Lodge Bank. Guests of the Pollard Hotel across the street witnessed the event, which gave new meaning to the claim of “entertainment nightly. g ” Not that this was anything new to some of an n tthe characters listed on the hotel’s historic guest register – Buffalo Bill Cody and Calamity Jane among them. Showing their entrepreneurial spirit, the local citizenry responded to circumstances created by Prohibition and developed their own brand of bootleg liquor. Known as “cough syrup,” the concoction replaced coal as the town’s economic mainstay, supplying “patients” from the Midwest to California. Just in time and at an appropriate juncture, it became apparent that people wanted to come here to take a look around and have some fun.
