The city’s location on the shores of the Mediterranean brings pleasant temperatures, allowing Barcelona to enjoy its 5km of perfectly equipped beaches all the year round, and a superb Olympic Marina which is ideal for lovers of water sports. Rainfall, which is occasionally heavy, averages 1,000 mm a year. This weather makes it possible to maintain the many green areas around Barcelona. Living with year-round sunshine makes it possible to have pleasant weather and to enjoy the city to the full: you can eat at open-air restaurants at any time of the year or enjoy a drink at one of its many pavement cafés, with the Mediterranean as its outstanding backdrop. Language Catalonia has its own language: Catalan. Most of the people who live in Barcelona are bilingual and speak Catalan and Spanish, which is also an official language. Street names and most road and transport signs are in Catalan. Many restaurants, especially those in the city centre, have menus in several languages. But if there's something you don’t understand, don't be afraid to ask, people will be only too happy to help. Many people from Barcelona understand English and French. Time zone As in most European countries and also in Catalonia, GMT is the time system used in Barcelona. Clocks are one hour ahead of GMT in winter and two in summer and are adjusted twice a year, going forward one hour in winter and back an hour in summer. Currency Spain is in the Eurozone and the euro is its official currency. Foreign currency can be exchanged at savings banks, or ‘Caixes’ (the opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 2pm. Thursday afternoons, 4.30pm to 7.45pm, except June to September) and banks (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 2pm and Saturday, 8.30am to 1pm, except summer). Bureaux de change also open every day in Barcelona city centre, and at the main railway stations and the Estació del Nord bus station and at the Airport, where they have longer opening hours. Normal day The working day in Barcelona usually begins at 8 or 9 in the morning and ends around 6 or 7 in the evening, with a one- or two-hour break for lunch at 2pm. This is the daily life and routine that befits the Catalans’ reputation in the rest of Spain as a hard-working and thrifty people. Lunch and dinner are usually eaten a little later than in the rest of Europe. Most restaurants open from 1pm to 4pm, and from 8pm until 11pm. Tipping isn’t obligatory, but people usually leave 5% if they are satisfied with the service. Shops have long opening hours, from 10am to 2pm and from 4.30 to 8 or 8.30pm. In Barcelona city centre, most shops don’t close at lunchtime and large shopping centres and department stores open until 10pm in summer. Prices With regard to prices, Barcelona features a wide range of accommodation, shops and services to suit all pockets. Here are some approximate prices in Barcelona: a single public transport ticket costs 2€, an espresso coffee between 1 and 1.50€; a lunchtime set menu can cost between 8 and 15€, a cinema ticket 10€; a sandwich 3 to 4€, and a newspaper about 1.30€. If you are a citizen of the European Union or a citizen of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, and you are entitled to social security in your country, you should apply for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The card makes visiting a state-run hospital, doctor's surgery or dental practice in European countries easier and means you will be treated in the same way as someone who lives in that country. You can obtain a card free of charge by contacting your local health insurance institution as each individual country is responsible for producing and distributing the card in its own territory. Take into account that the card does not cover private health care or repatriation costs. Visit the EHIC website to find out more: http://ehic.europa.eu If you are from outside the European Union you should check whether there is an agreement for healthcare between the social security of your country and of Spain. If there is such an agreement, you should submit the necessary documents in your country so that you can have free access to Spanish public healthcare. If your country has no healthcare agreement with the Spanish Social Security system, you should take out private insurance cover for the whole of your stay in Spain. UAB has designed together with ACE Europe and ÓMNIBUS Grupo Concentra an insurance for international students, researchers and professors of the university. There is also an insurance exclusively for repatriation available. All the students under 28 registered at the UAB have right to be covered under the UAB Educational Insurance scheme. You can enrol for classes which run both semesters (Anual) even though you are only studying for one semester. However, you must inform your lecturer when the class begins and also obtain a copy of the “Certificado de aprovechamiento”. A copy of this certificate can be found at the end of this dossier, and also available from Gestió Acadèmica. At the end of the semester you must give this certificate to your lecturer so that s/he can enter your mark, sign it and return it to you. The credits listed on this certificate will be half the credits given for this subject. • Catalan language classes for exchange students. If you are studying during the second semester only and wish to attend the Catalan language course, please ensure that you enrol in the group for international students attending just for the second term. • Spanish language classes for exchange students. If you wish to attend the Spanish language course, please bear in mind that there is an obligatory level test at the beginning of the semester. Depending on your score, your lecturer will assign you to the group which best corresponds to your level. It is very important to ensure that you quote the correct group number when you register. 28 Dossier International Students Updated on : 08/07/2013 Facultat de Traducció i d’Interpretació [email protected] 3.5 ENROLMENT General Procedure International exchange students enrol on specifically assigned dates. These are published by Gestió Acadèmica on the Faculty notice board outside Gestió Acadèmica and on the Faculty web page. First semester enrolment for 2013‐2014: • 1st – 7th October 2013. Note. The registration period for the spring term has yet to be determined. This will be at the beginning of March 2014 ‐ see notice board outside Gestió Acadèmica or our web page for updates. Before registering for any course we strongly recommend that you talk to your academic coordinator and the lecturers whose classes you are interested in to check whether the course is appropriate (language level, any prerequisites etc.). Their input will save you a lot of time when trying to find the classes which best meet your needs. To register, first complete the application form available the Logistic Support Office (Suport Logístic) in the Faculty building lobby. Complete this form and take it to your academic coordinator (see pp. 5‐6), who will check and sign it. Then submit the completed and signed form to Gestió Acadèmica, along with photocopies of your passport, health insurance and a recent photograph. You will then be given an individual appointment so that you can formally register for classes. Other considerations Specific Courses for Exchange Students: • Idioma Castellà 1‐ 101284 (Spanish language 1). This course is specifically designed for students studying Spanish as a foreign language, and there are different groups / levels. Exchange students must first take a test to determine their Spanish level before they can register for this course ‐ this is given during the first two weeks of the semester. The lecturer then assigns students to the appropriate group, which you must quote accurately when enrolling. See announcements on the Faculty notice board for details and updates. • Introducció a la realitat catalana per a estrangers ‐29274. The main learning objective of this course is to introduce international students to Catalan culture: geography, history, social and political dynamics, principal public and private institutions, art, literature and popular Catalan traditions and culture in contrast to Spain and the European Union. This subject is offered both semesters and the languages used in class are Spanish and English. Exams may be written in Catalan, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Russian. • Introducció a les tecnologies de la traducció i la interpretació ‐101483. This class begins September 30 and it is very important to attend the first day of class. Class attendance is an essential part of this course and when registering at the end of September‐beginning of October, priority will be given to those students who have been attending since the beginning. 29 Dossier International Students Updated on : 08/07/2013 • Facultat de Traducció i d’Interpretació [email protected] Exchange students may register for subjects in other UAB faculties also, providing they take at least 50% of their classes in this Faculty. Changes to original registration There is a further registration period during which you can make changes to the classes you have already registered for. To do this, first obtain and complete the specific form for this purpose (“modificació de matrícula”), available from Gestió Acadèmica. Take the completed form to your academic coordinator (see pp. 5‐6) for authorisation, and then hand in the signed form to Gestió Acadèmica for processing. The period for change of registration is 14th‐18th October, 2013 (after this deadline, students could not request any change in their enrolment). The provisional registration dates for the first semester (autumn‐winter) are given below, but you should confirm these against updated postings on the notice board outside Gestió Acadèmica or from our web page http://www.uab.cat/traducciointepretacio: Designated Arrival Dates (approx.) 15 September 2013 Enrolment period Official enrolment period First period: 1st to 7th October 2013 Course modification or cancellation period: 14th – 18th October 2013 30 Dossier International Students Updated on : 08/07/2013 Facultat de Traducció i d’Interpretació [email protected] 3.6 EXTENDING STUDY ABROAD PERIOD Any exchange student wishing to apply for an extension to their stay at the UAB should submit the corresponding form (that is on page 31 of this dossier) with a confirmation e‐mail from their home university to the Faculty Gestió Acadèmica before December 1st 2013. Therefore, you must first inform your home university coordinator first and then Gestió Acadèmica ‐ [email protected]. The UAB operates the following policy regarding requests by exchange students to extend their study period beyond that originally agreed by both institutions. To be considered there must be a currently unfilled place available according to the bilateral agreement with the exchange student’s home university. If there is a place available, then the final decision is at the discretion of the corresponding academic Faculty Coordinator (currently, Roland Pearson – Sèneca and Erasmus; Jacqueline Minett – Global Mobility Programme), which will be based on the individual merits of each request. If you have already formalized your residency and you have the card that proves it (NIE), all you have to do is present it at a bank when you open an account. If you do not have a residency card and you are an EU resident there are two options: 1. The first is to go to the Police Headquarters (Dirección General de la Policía) with your passport (original and photocopy) and ask for a "certificado de no residencia" (a certificate of non-residency). Ten days later (approximately) you will have to go back there to pick it up. With your passport and this certificate you can go to any bank to open an account. It will be operative from that very moment, and the money deposited in it will be immediately available. 2. The second option is to go to the bank with your passport and ask to open an account. In this case, it is the bank itself that requests the certificate of non-residency with a permission form that you can sign at the bank. If you open a bank account this way, it won’t be operative until the bank receives this document, and any money deposited will be blocked until that time. If you don’t have a residency card and are from of a non-EU country You can only open an account by presenting a passport. However, it is possible that if in less than two months you have still not obtained your residency card the bank may block your funds. It is therefore very important that you apply to open a bank account only after turning in the paperwork required for the NIE. There is no minimum deposit required to open bank accounts in euros, for other currencies there are minimums depending on which one it is. We recommend before choosing a bank that you visit the ones on the university campus. In some cases, they will allow you to open an account without asking for any documentation as long as you present your student identification. Finally, we remind you that banks usually charge for certain transactions, such the opening and maintaining of an account. It therefore makes sense to compare the different banks before choosing. Cancelling your bank account Once your time in Spain has ended, you should close your bank account. If you don’t annul the contract binding you to your bank and choose to simply leave your bank account at zero, account fees quickly put your balance into the negative. When this occurs, it will be impossible to close the account until the balance is positive again after paying the bank any fees and penalties it deems appropriate. If the account you want to cancel is associated with more than one name, the application to cancel the account should be signed by all of them. Cancelling the account obliges the bank to give the account holder/s back the balance left in the account. It also requires that the account holder/s return effects associated with the account, such as bank cards, bank books, checks, etc. It is considered bad practice to reopen an account that has already been cancelled, so if further charges are made to the account using means of payment associated with the account, the bank should reclaim the ensuing debt but may not “reactivate” the cancelled account in order to cover the movements in question.
