commercialfishermen,seafoodprocessors,distributors,chefs,restauranteursandothersalongthe
supplychain,wetakeprideinourabilitytoprovidelocalseafoodtoourcustomers.Wearealways
lookingforinnovativewaystosellthefreshestproductpossible,andthatoftenmeanstellingastorya
storythatseparatesthegoodfishfromthebad.
That’swhyweareexcitedaboutanemerginginnovationinthedomesticswordfishfishery:deep-set
buoygear.Thisgeartypeisactivelytendedandminimizesinteractionswithnon-targetedspeciessuch
asseaturtlesanddolphins.
Deep-setbuoygearhasbenefitsinadditiontolessbycatch.Fishermenareabletoland,bleedandput
thefishonicequickly,soswordfishcaughtwithbuoygearisofthehighestquality.Thismeansahigher
pricetoinnovativeWestCoastfishermenandatastierproductforconsumers.
TheCouncilisnowconsideringtransitioningbuoygearfromanexperimentalgeartoafederally
authorizedgearundertheHighlyMigratorySpeciesFisheryManagementPlan.Collectivelywe
recommendthattheCouncilmakeauthorizationofbuoygearapriorityandinitiatethisprocessearlyin
2016toexpeditetheauthorizationofbuoygearassoonaspossible.
Weallshareintheresponsibilityofmakingourfisheriesmoresustainable.Deep-setbuoygearisastep
inthatdirection.Thecommercialmarketandmanyinthefishingfleetarereadytomakethisgeartypea
viablealternativeonthewater.Workingtogether,wecandeliverasustainablycaughtandhigher
