ELKS PRIDE – COMMUNITY FOCUS
MAY 2016
Elks Family Picnic-May 29, 2016
Lake Quassy Amusement Park
Our Annual Family Picnic will again be held at Lake Quassy on
Sunday, May 29th from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. As in the past the menu will be extensive. The price for
Tickets: $25.00 for adults, kids 12 and under are $6.00, children under 4 are free. Ride bracelets are $17.00
per bracelet and will be made available by Lake Quassy at the entrance to the Picnic for Elks and their
guests. This is a separate cost.
Parking: will be free upon presentation of your paid ticket to the event. There will be no parking in
the infield area. Quassy will provide a golf cart ride to and from the pavilion for those who are handicapped.
Only committee vehicles transporting product will be allowed in the infield area.
Food: All food, beer, wine and soda is included in the price of admission. Enjoy all the food you wish
to consume at the event site. To be fair to everyone in attendance we ask that you do not ask for foil or takeout containers and please don’t bring your own. As those of you who have attended in the past know, there
is a significant turnout for this event. Please purchase tickets as early as possible to allow the
Committee time to plan food purchases accordingly. You are encouraged to invite your Family, Friends
and Neighbors to spend Memorial Day weekend with you at this event. Also, Please give consideration to
all those who will attend the event. There is no need or excuse to arrive at an early morning hour to reserve
multiple tables. People are moving in and out all day. A single table should be sufficient for your party with
more than ample space. You can also bring lawn chairs and use the surrounding area. Remember
the
event begins at noon and you will only be allowed to enter through the main gate where a
hand stamp will be applied. We want everybody to have a wonderful time and enjoy the day
with your loved ones and fellow Lodge members.
Look for tickets in the Rathskeller.
Thank you for your continued support.
HOUSE COMMITTEE
SMOKE FREE DINNERS ON SATURDAY NIGHTS
You asked and we're responding. Coming soon, you’ll be able to come back to the Lodge and enjoy a
smoke free dinner in the Donahue Hall. We're just asking for a little bit of time to spruce up the room. At this time
the Lodge is not in a situation to do a major renovation, however we have some volunteers that are willing to put
in a little elbow grease to make it work. Don't worry about the steps; you can use the chair lift or come into the
room right from West Main Street via the front door. You will get the same dining experience as you always have
in the Rathskeller. We look forward to this project being completed and seeing all of the Saturday night diners
again. Look for the date in a future Call. We're listening and we want to continue to hear from you send your
suggestions on how we can make improvements to the Lodge to [email protected]

Dear Members,
The Installation of lodge officers went well, and everyone seemed to enjoy the event. My thanks go out to
Michelle Minicucci, PER, Diane DeLucia, and Ginny Leary for the wonderful job they did on decorating the Brady Hall.
Special thanks to Pat Lacerrenza and the kitchen crew. My family members and friends in attendance were duly
impressed. Officially spring is here, (With a snow storm here and there). A new season for growth and prosperity. I
encourage all members new and “seasoned” to come and support your lodge. Your Suggestions are always welcome and
appreciated please e mail us at [email protected]
Our 6th Annual Kenneth J. Pelton, CCMC Benefit Concert was a huge success. As always the support of
the volunteers make things happen. This event would not be as successful without the help of all those dedicated
individuals.
We have set our budget for the next year and your House Committee will be working hard to bring events back to the lodge.
We hope that you find at least ONE you can come enjoy and support.
Events coming up: Mother’s Day Brunch, Family Picnic, Flag Day Ceremony. CT Elks Association
Convention. And back by popular demand, SATURDAY NIGHT NON SMOKING DINNERS & Entertainment in the
Donohue Hall. Please read further in this call for specifics. You asked and we are trying to accommodate. Please come
and support our efforts.
I am thankful to all who have expressed their well wishes and support to us all for the upcoming year. You’ve
asked how you can help and my best answer is by attending as many meetings as you can, see how things are run. The
best way to help our lodge is to become informed as well as involved. These meetings are held every 2nd & 4th Tuesday
of the month at 7:00 PM. (the 4th Tuesday in July & August) (the 1st Tuesday in December).
And now for May’s Elk of the Month. I have watched this group of people successfully feed hundreds over the last 6 years
of Benefit Concert Events. They have shown up at the Lodge prepped, and cooked for 2 + days each time, all the while
staying in the background not asking for a thing. Please know that I genuinely appreciate and value your commitment of
time, and for this I thank you. Patrick Jennings, John Carosella, Gary Keating, Wally Makarewicz, John Kunkle. You
ALL exemplify what Elkdom is all about.

“May They Rest In Peace”
We are now into the new fraternal year. Dues notices were a tad
late this year due to circumstances beyond our control; similarly
experienced.by many other lodges to date. Please be patient, as the turnaround is very quick, but it is not overnight. Keep in mind that my office has
processed 1100 dues cards in a little over a month.
All the returns have been processed. If you haven’t received your card
yet, please email me at [email protected] and I will reprint it and send it
out to you or leave it behind the bar for you.
Keep in mind that, once it’s mailed I have no control over it!
If you feel that you need to vent your feelings in whatever form, they should
be said or emailed to me at [email protected] ONLY and NOT with your
remittances, as my wife, herself a member of our Lodge, is the person that
opens the mail, not me!
This will be the last month prior to me taking over the reins as State President of CT. Elk s
Association. The four years I have spent being Vice President, and many years as District and/or
State Chairman for the Association has been very beneficial in preparing me for the coming year. I
look forward to the challenge of heading up a very active and dedicated Association with so many
wonderful Officers and members from all 33 Lodges, over 22,000 members strong, working on the
Grand Lodge programs that we as Elks hold so dear to our hearts.
The frustration from not having a phone that allows for messages to be left and retrieved in my office
is mounting. The Trustees are feverishly working on getting the whole system upgraded, as parts for
the antiquated system that we presently have are difficult at best to get. Again, please be patient, as
these things take time and money.
Always remember, that if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, you
may reach me at [email protected]
This is the preferred and most efficient method of reaching me, and unfortunately, the only
way to reach me at the moment. Most emails are answered within minutes of receipt. If you do not
have a computer, you may call the Lodge at 203-755-1159 and leave a message with the bar
steward.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE SECRETARY
At the meeting of Apr. 12, 2016, a letter was read on the floor of the Lodge from member Pat
Giannelli, Jr. formally appealing to the Lodge his suspension of Club privileges by the House
Committee which was handed down by the authority granted them by Grand Lodge Statute No. 16.040.
This automatically stayed the suspension until a hearing is held at a regular Lodge session.
The Exalted Ruler, at that Lodge session, called for a hearing to take place at the regular session of
the Lodge on Tuesday, May 24th, thus giving ample time to have this announcement be seen by all
Lodge members with the requisite 10 day notice per the above-mentioned Statute via The Call. The
Lodge session will commence at its normal time of 7:00 PM, at which time the hearing will take place.
After and only after a motion is made, both sides will present their case and the motion will be put to
vote. Balloting will be by secret vote and will be counted by the Trustees and the Secretary will
announce the results.
After the Lodge session, the results of any motion(s) will be final and no further action(s)
may be heard.

CALLING ON ALL MEMBERS
In our commitment to continue and move our Lodge forward,
we realize that we must know our past to understand the Present, and
be able to aptly Plan for the Future. Often we miss out on that simple
thing we call “the past”. In fact, I’ve realized that many don’t even give it
any attention whatsoever, feeling as if it is not important enough to know
about it. We all seem so obsessed with what’s going on now and what will
happen next?
What we don’t realize is that the past holds so much
information, so much wisdom and so many experiences that we can
never accumulate in our lifetime. Yet knowing all that, many don’t dig
enough into it… and I’m not talking in terms of one’s own past but rather
the past of our entire Lodge.
With that being said, we are in the planning stages of a
“Waterbury Elks Lodge History” night. In order to accomplish this, we
are calling on all members and family of members to contact us if
you are willing to help, by providing us with pictures, information,
memories of your time spent at our Lodge over the years. I believe
before we can properly understand where we are, we must first
understand, appreciate and respect where we have been and who has
gotten us this far.
You can contact Charlotte Brady 203-755-7908
or myself at 203-808-1398.
We look forward to hearing from you.

John Carosella
Waterbury Elks Member to become New President
of the Connecticut Elks Association
On Saturday evening, June 4, 2016, Jonathan Arthur, PDD, PER, LODGE SECRETARY, will be
installed as President of the Connecticut Elks Association. Jon has served the Waterbury Lodge in
many capacities over the years. Since joining the lodge, he jumped right in and became an officer. He
was a member of the house committee and investigating committee. He built the storage rooms himself,
behind the Brady hall and remodeled the hallway. In 2003, Maurice Hernandez, ER gave him the honor of Officer of the Year, saying
that he could always count on Jon. While serving as Exalted Ruler in 2005-2006, Jon was the driving force in the remodeling of the
bowling lanes after a flood destroyed them. Jon has also been a member of the golf league for the last several years. He served as
District Deputy in 2007.
Jon Arthur has been a very dedicated Elk throughout his years as a member, always offering help to those who need it and
sharing his knowledge of the statutes when needed. No matter what time of the day or night, or what personal event he was attending,
Jon always takes the time to answer a call or text from a lodge member in need.
It is an honor both for your lodge and Jon’s family, that he will be representing Waterbury #265 as State President. I hope
you will all support him by attending his installation dinner in Rocky Hill, or even buying one of his shirts. He has worked hard, and has
made many sacrifices. I hope his lodge will show him the appreciation he deserves. Should you require and information on purchasing
the shirts or attending the dinner, please contact Cindy Arthur at 860-558-0113 or [email protected]

Jerry Barth Saratoga Classic 2016
The Jerry Barth Saratoga Classic is once again
scheduled this year and I have 4 trips scheduled for 2016. The
dates are Saturday July 23, Saturday July 30, Saturday
August 20, and SUNDAY AUGUST 28.
A deposit of $25 dollars per person will guarantee
you a seat on the bus. The total price is $ 85 dollars per
person and that includes breakfast at the Lodge at 7:00am, bus
transportation, barbeque at Saratoga Springs Park, admission
and grandstand seating at the Racetrack, all the beverages you
can handle including the ones you can fit in your cooler
(providing that you bring one), the coolers are allowed to be
carried into the Racetrack, BUT NO GLASS BOTTLES
WHATSOEVER ARE ALLOWED IN THE RACETRACK ITSELF.
There will be wine for the ladies and I’m planning on adding a
new drink on the bus for everyone to enjoy.
The bus will leave the Elk’s parking lot at 7:30 am, and
we should arrive at the Saratoga Springs Park no later than
10:30 am so that we can enjoy the cook out. We shall then
proceed to the race track between 12:00 and 12:30 pm and we
will leave at the end of the 8th race.
You are still welcome to stop at our Lodge for dinner
when we return after the race and enjoy a great meal prepared
by Chef Pat Lacerenza, and you all know by now what great
meals he prepares.
For more information, you can contact me at (203) 5284001, or e-mail me at [email protected]
Payments can be mailed to me, FLAVIO BASILE at
200 Yale Street, 30-B, Waterbury CT 06704, or can be left at
the Rathskeller in the form of a check payable to “BPOE #265”.

We are currently using the Electronic Board in the Rathskeller
as well as the Sick Board at the Lodge entrance to keep our members
updated on the status of those who are recuperating at home or currently
in the hospital.
Please take a moment to read it on your next visit and
remember to keep me updated if you know of any Elk member who is
sick or in the hospital.
It would be nice to drop them a card to let them know that
you are thinking about them!
