T’S over! Mavericks II have finally lost a game
after a winning
run stretching all the
way back to their fist
ever game at the start of
last season in Division 4.
And, rather surprisingly,
it was the division’s bottom team, the Rebels,
who finally broke the
sequence of 28 games,
just four short of the record set by the senior
Mavs between April
2005 and May 2007.
The win is all the more
remarkable considering
the Mavs got off to their
usual commanding start
and were 9-2 up after

three innings. A mutual
shutout in the 4th
marked the turning
point as the Rebels hit
seven in the 5th to no
reply, tying the scores.
After trading runs in the
6th, Rebels went three
up in the top of the 7th,
held their nerve and
achieved only their second win of the season in
the most improbable
style.
Meanwhile the final
games in the second rotation in Divisions 1 and
2 confirmed the expected sets of teams for
the so-called ‘playoffs’,
with only the relative
orderings in question.
Thunder suffered a
momentary scare as the
Dodgers came back
from a 3-9 deficit after
four to take a momentary 11-10 lead in the 6th
before losing 14-16. But
the vociferous Dodgers
support from the sidelines only spurred on
the rumblers to a win.
Mavericks narrowly
beat Outlaws, but had
been ahead from the 1st
inning. Lions and
Greensox both registered run-ahead wins
against the Camels and
Mutineers respectively, the latter’s relegation thus confirmed with

A nine-run 2nd inning gave Tigers a comfortable lead in this
game, a lead that they never
looked in serious danger of losing. Another scoring spree in the
6th, followed by a shut out in the
bottom of the inning, gave Tigers
the 15-run mercy win.
Tony La Fave, Emma Pritchard,
Luisa Tolu and Steve Girling
were the OBP leaders, all going 4

heroes in La Fave, Girling and
Michael Meahand. There were
other strong performances up

hard hitting Louise Wellman and
debut girl Alyssa Jones particularly worthy of mention.
In the field the whole team did a
solid job, making (almost) all the
routine plays and keeping Freeze
from putting any big numbers on
the board. Tigers were solid

gloves, and everyone did their
bit, but there should perhaps be a
special mention for Tolu, who
made some nice plays at 3rd on
her return to the team.
Jones looked really good on her
league debut, and thanks are due
to Luisa Tolu for helping us out
in our hour of need. (People taking holidays in the middle of the
softball season, three in the same
week! Dearie me, what is the
world coming to?) Also a special
mention to new boy Ryan, who
came down to watch what turned
into a pretty protracted affair –
so long drawn out he eventually
had to go home without even visiting the pub!

TODAY we start with a joke: Me
opening up the batting order.
Bets more likely to come in than
this ever happening include Julie
having a sugar free diet, Rachel
going a month without an injury,
Sonia being early into outfield or
even Nick holding down a relationship. Still, Captain Michael
went with this and it worked
every time. Ok, some times. But
it did the first time. Talking of
first times (not Ian’s weekend
conquest though), we actually
batted well first inning and the
frogs got flogged. Fielding was
tighter than Kath’s leggings and
we hit up as many balls as Sonia
hits up women and Nick gets
turned down by them. Batting
throughout the game was good,
Rachel showing autistic preciseness in the understanding of
‘running it out’ to first. Note to
rookies from Rach: If first base is
stretching to fetch the ball, don’t
dance round him, run straight
over the top. Like a steamroller
over an injured Bambi, MAKE
THEM FEEL THE STUDS OF
YOUR BOOTS IN THEIR BACK.
Rachel Campbell-Cook fact of the
day: An anagram of her name (a
few letters missed out but none
added) is: Cheap Labor Cock.
There I was thinking it was only
Mike who was used as this – eh,
Julie, there’s another you can
snare for nocturnal exercise?
Back to softball, we got injuries
galore. Mike got mingy groin,
Chu mingy leg and Rachel mingy
body meant that the boys decided
to hit big and Rach gave up
climbing to let the excellent Katy
Coupland take over running duties. Mike and Chu hitting home
runs on one leg was the stuff my
softball dreams are made of, and
Chu catching up with whoever
was in front of him on his one leg
was the stuff riders of the Smiler
at Alton Towers’ dreams are
made of (own up, who was it he
caught?). Mike’s grand slam
matched Ian’s earlier lucky slice
grand slam… Injuries meant field
changes and most of us spent our
time working out how Sonia
manages to let balls go flying
over her head every match? Nick
took up short stop as Michael
Lott went to pitch and the game
was won 25-14 after 6½ innings.
Tantrum fans - No tantrums
from Ian or others to report. The
End.

JUDGING by the last game
against Hurricanes, we knew this
one could be difficult and as always we were struggling for girls.
However we managed to get a
full team of registered Rippers
together.
Before the game started it became apparent that Hurricanes
had taken advantage of their
massive squad (under the Thunder banner) to complement their
team. Sighing, we remained
strong and thought we would
give this our best shot. We huddled together and decided we
were going to play this game the
Ripper way and have some fun.
This was the ‘David v Goliath’
match and our slingshots were
poised ready to strike.
Top of the 1st and we were up to
bat first. Our worst nightmare, 3
up 3 down. Proof ,as if we needed
any, that we needed to bring our

(Continuedfrom page 3)
best game to have any chance at
all. So that’s what we did, we rallied together with lots of support
and shouting of encouragement
we managed a shut out of our
own! COME ON RIPPERS!
Top of the 2nd 0-0. This time we
managed four at bat but still
failed to score. Could we shut out
the might of Hurricanes again?
Sadly not this time BUT, continuing with the support and encouragement of all ten Rippers on the
field and our supporters on the
sidelines we kept them to just
two runs.
Top of the 3rd 0-2. We now had
more confidence and knew this
wasn’t going to be the whitewash
we had feared when faced with
such experience. We managed
seven at-bats and scored two
runs to bring the scores even.
Back to fielding. Again the Ripper spirit took over and we
fielded really well keeping the
Hurricanes to a single run. It
looked to us that Hurricanes also
thought they had a game on their
hands now: worried faces were
looking back at us. Top of the 4th
2-3. The belief in the Rippers was
now immense. We were hitting
hard and causing fielding mistakes with our base running. The
noise we were making was great,
considering there were only
about 15 of us in total, most of
the noise coming from Dave
Warren, standing in as captain.
We managed five runs in the 4th
giving us a lead. Now we needed
to defend it. Some great pitching,
some amazing catches and a lack
of any kind of mistake gave us
our second shut out. BOOM!
Top of the 5th 7-3. Time to bat
again. This inning saw our two
best hits of the day. The first
from Scott Barton, as he hit a triple bringing home 2 RBIs. Next
up was Simon Baird who hit his
first home run of the season
bringing himself and Barton
BASES LOADED
home. Total for the innings four,
giving us a lead of eight going into
the bottom of the 5th. Another
shut out! Rippers fielding was on
fire again. The 6th innings saw a
double shut out, so we were entering the 7th and final inning 11-3
up. We saw the Hurricanes were
all huddled together planning how
they could get back into this game.
They shut us out again! We were
gutted, but knew all we had to do
was keep their total low and we
would win. In all honesty we
looked nervous and the Hurricanes knew it. Warren’s pitching
dropped off and he gave his first
walk. A couple of wayward throws
in the field and the Hurricanes
started scoring. Surely the Rippers
weren’t going to let
the Hurricanes catch up? We took
a moment, rallied the troops and
got on with it. Hurricanes had
their best inning of the night,
BUT, it wasn’t enough. The Rippers had done it. Final score 11-7.
What a game to be part of!

Especially when you go to extra
innings
It’s all about victory
Don’t believe them when they say
It’s not the winning
It’s the taking part
But in the end
You need hitters to deliver
And the defense must get the
outs
While the pitcher needs to strike.
(For an alternative view read
from the bottom line to the top*)
*Inspired by on-line poet Brian
Bilston – for a moving read see
his poem Refugees.
A little flesh on the bones. From
the 2nd inning to the top of the
7th Drizzle trailed a determined
Colt 45s outfit. While the precipitators’ defense operated with just
a couple of hiccups, their lumber
slumbered – mostly giving fielding practice to a stand-out shortstop. The gunslingers accumulated steadily and when headed
in the last held their nerve from
two outs to force extra innings.
Drizzle’s bats drove in four in the
first extra. Then it was their
squeaky-bottom time as they
hung on for a narrow victory. The
game featured Drizzle’s first ever
triple play. The revolvers were
perhaps justifiably miffed as it
occurred in slow motion with an
apparent call of ‘Time’ between
the second and third outs. Sadie
Light took the MVP honours. Andreina Salazar, our amuleto de la
suerte, got another hit and Baljit
Ahluwalia’s experience was key
to the win – the streak is now at
five.

Mavs II lose unbeaten record
(Continued from page 1)
three games to go.
In Division 2, Lightning, who had
a comfortable derby win which also
confirmed Storm’s relegation, are
just one game behind the Meerkats, who were 11-0 up against the
Bullfrogs after one inning and
scored steadily for five more.
Speeders squeaked into the fourth
playoff slot on head-to-heads
against Mayhem and Sharks,
with the scousers unfortunately
having two consecutive rest weeks
as a result.
The big result in Division 3 has already been mentioned, but the
chasing Camels II are 2½ games
back with five to play, having won
two close games last week: first they
edged the Enforcers 19-17 in a
game of two halves, in which they
came from behind to win, then in
an even closer game with the Bats,
where they took an 8-1 lead, then
allowed ten runs in the 4th but still
managed to keep their noses in
front, and held out for a 17-16 win.
Outlaws II slipped behind in the
promotion race losing to Hackers
while Pirates beat Moorkats to
leapfrog them in the table.
Rippers have taken over second
place in Division 4, beating Hurricanes in convincing manner on
Tuesday then mercying the Falcons on Thursday. Canes have a
game in hand, but it’s against the
Tigers, who beat Freeze 25-10 in
six innings. Drizzle are just behind
their clubmates after beating the
Colts, who had two losses this
week. Barflies won twice, while
Phoenix maintained their winning
streak with a mercy win against the
Falcons.

Synthetic
batting boxes?
The perennial debate about wornout batting boxes, especially after
heavy use in wet conditions, could
be solved at a stroke if we were to
lay down synthetic grass as shown
in this picture. Parrswood
groundsman Dave Letven is in
favour of the change, which has
been debated for many years, and
has only been held up by the lack
of research into cost and availability.
Could this be the way forward?
Corrections
Early editions of last week’s issue
had Camels beating Speeders in the
tournament’s Rec final, whereas it
was the other way round, as later
editions showed.
And the caption to the picture of
Beth and Rolf (Arrowsmith-)
Herbert mentioned Outlaws II’s defeat by the Rebels. ‘Of’ the Rebels it
should have been.
The Outlaws’ home run as reported
last week was scored by Mike Hawkins rather than Mike Watkins. Baljit has owned up to being the source
of that one.
Transfer
Alexa Martinez, Storm to Thunder, 5 August.
Note that as the transfer deadline
has now passed, only transfers ‘up’
are now permitted.
