“A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” We’re all familiar with this practical adage that teaches we should place a higher value on what we already have
than the unknown possibilities of what could be. Who knew this bit of human
wisdom also plays a part in the reproductive behavior of the wild turkey. What
many people don’t realize, including some turkey hunters, is our standard tactic
of making a variety of hen vocalizations to entice a gobbler to come in is opposite
of how things work in nature. Out in the wild, female turkeys come to a male turkey when he gobbles; thus his rationale for loudly sounding off in the predawn
darkness or daylight hours to attract potential mates. (It isn’t to alert hunters as
to his location in the woods.)
The piece of the puzzle turkey hunters don’t have when they head into the
woods is access to Mr. Gobbler’s social calendar. To put it in anthropomorphic
terms, you don’t know if the previous day he made a date to meet a certain lady
first thing in the morning or if she spent the night in a nearby roost (tree), so
they could get together shortly after daylight. The bottom line is Mr. Gobbler
may already have his “bird in the hand” in mind before you ever enter the woods
and attempt to sound extremely enticing as “the new girl in town”, which represents the uncertain “two in the bush” to the gobbler. This is where “run and
gun” turkey hunting breaks down, since many hunters move on to find a different gobbler; well before the initial gobbler they heard, but who moved off in a
different direction, finishes his date with a real girlfriend.
This thinking that there is nothing wrong with your turkey calling, it’s just Mr.
Gobbler is preoccupied with an actual hen, is the crux of accomplished outdoor
writer and professional guide Judd Cooney’s sage advice I alluded to last week.
Frustrated his clients were “running and gunning” when he had positioned them
in promising locations, Mr. Cooney began putting trail cameras in those very
same spots right after the hunter moved on. The results of his informal study are
astonishing. An incredible 85% of the time, that’s 17 out of every 20 situations, a
gobbler eventually came to the very spot where the hunter had previously called
from at some point later in the morning or in the first few hours of the early afternoon. Judd’s findings confirm two key points. First, gobblers are polygamous,
not monogamous, and after they finish meeting up with one hen they will be off
looking for love again. Second, turkeys employ remarkable acoustic location,
meaning they know precisely where they heard a sound come from and can
hone in on that spot at a later time. In simple terms, if a gobbler responded to
your call at 6 AM, but moved off in a different direction (most likely to meet up
with a real hen), he will probably come back looking for your hen sounds, but
may not show up until 10 AM or later. The big question is: will you be there or
will you have already moved on as you “run and gun”?
When I first read Judd’s writing, I couldn’t get over that 85% figure of gobblers
eventually showing up to a caller’s location. It got me thinking about the all-day
vigils I practice when deer or bear hunting in a good location. Why couldn’t I be
more patient in my turkey hunting? The first time I tried it, I almost dismissed it
as a myth after I remained in one spot from before first light until Noon on opening day. Then at 12:05 PM, after packing up, a nice gobbler walked out into the
open at 25 yards and I could only watch. (I hadn’t heard a single gobble since
7:15 AM.) This year, I vowed to employ Judd Cooney’s logic on opening day and
remain in one spot in good turkey habitat from well before dawn until Noon. My
patience paid off at 11:22 AM, when my gobbler eventually came looking for the
hen he had heard earlier in the morning.
How many gobblers have come in after you left the woods? Consider being
more patient the rest of this season and in the future to fill your tag. God Bless,

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you
have love for one another. —John 13:35
Chinese New Year happened to fall on the same day
as Valentine’s Day in 2010. While these two festivals
have very different origins, there are some similarities in how they are celebrated. In both cases, loved
ones give gifts to express love for one another.
Whether it is giving roses to your beloved on Valentine’s Day or hong bao (red packets with money) to
family and friends on Chinese New Year, they represent tokens of love.
Our Lord Jesus Christ commanded His disciples to
“love one another,” because “by this all will know
that you are My disciples, if you have love for one
another” (John 13:34-35).
The love that our Lord wants His disciples to have for
one another is different from the romantic kind displayed between loving couples and the brotherly kind
shown between friends or family. It’s an unselfish
love. The Greek word John used in Jesus’ command
is agape—God’s kind of love that expects nothing in
return. That was what Jesus showed to His disciples
when He “poured water into a basin and began to
wash the disciples’ feet” (v.5). That is the kind of love
He displayed when He went to the cross for us.
Today, look for someone to whom you can show such
unselfish love.
Lord, teach us the secret of loving,
The love You are asking today;
Then help us to love one another;
For this we most earnestly pray. —Anon.

Sprinkle with half the topping mixture. Very carefully spread remaining batter on top. Sprinkle with
remaining topping. Bake at 3500 for 30-35 minutes.

Place cards are a small detail for a wedding that can add a lot of beauty
to the wedding reception. You can add simple additions or you can go all
out and make them a main piece of decoration. For simple additions take
a flower cut out, heart gem, or metal charm and add it to the corner of the
place cards.
For a larger focal display there are various things that you can do. For a
Fall theme wedding you can use this: make or rent a centerpiece for a table
that is wire formed into a tree. You can then use your Cricut or a large leaf
punch to punch out leaves. Now just write the guest name and table on a
leaf. If you would like, you can add glitter or flocking to add detail to your
leaves. Then hang some from the tree and lay some on the table to look
as if they have fallen. You can use the same idea for a Spring wedding and
make flowers. Each flower can represent a different table and you can have
the 8 to 12 names of each person sitting at that table as the petals. You
could even have a heart tree (for red themed weddings) or snow flake tree
(for winter themes).
Another great idea is to think completely outside the box. At my brother’s
wedding they used Jenga blocks and wrote everyone’s names on the blocks.
It was a very cute way to incorporate their love of playing board games into
their wedding reception. I have also seen ideas using Pez dispensers, tree
cookies (cross sections of tree branches) for outside weddings, shells for
beach themes, paper airplanes, miniature Coca-Cola bottles, bottle corks,
and more.
The possibilities are endless for ideas to use for your place cards as an
extra focal point. Be creative!
