E.L. Crossley breaks a World Record! The E.L. Crossley Women’s Crew decided that they were going to break a world record by rowing 100 km in less that 7 hours and 22 minutes. Not only did they break the record, but they also beat their fundraising goal, by raising $2,250 for Women’s Place! A HUGE Thank you to Alex, Carly and the entire Women’s Crew at E.L. Crossley and of course to all the donors who supported their efforts! Thursday, May 8 - Sunday, May 11 Niagara Falls Sportsplex 3710 Sinnicks Ave Niagara Falls We sell only the best quality books, music, movies and puzzles! You’ve gotta see it to believe it Spring/Summer 2014 Page 2 Our Committed Volunteers – Behind the Scenes at Book Riot Have you ever wondered how all of those Book Riot books were organized into such precise categories? One of our dedicated Book Riot committee members explains the process: “We receive donations of books throughout the year. We sort those donated books into categories; box them; remove any soiled, moldy, or torn books and recycle…unsuitable books. Often we begin sorting books for the next year, a week or two after the Book Riot. Sorting sessions usually last up to three hours and involve from six to twelve or more volunteers. Sorting is sometimes done on a weekly basis.” Book Riot simply would not happen without our sorting volunteers, members of our Book Riot Committee, and the approximately 150 volunteers who show up to help during the week of the event. Our complete volunteer team includes 250 dedicated souls who help us with governance, committee work, donation sorting, childcare, office work, grocery shopping, raising awareness and funds at Women’s Place and community events, and so much more. Currently, we are in particular need of committee and board members. Think you would like to help? Contact Jennifer M. (ext. 239 or email [email protected]). Are you a current volunteer who would like to learn more about Women’s Place? Volunteer orientations are scheduled for June 9 (6pm), September 20 (10 am) and November 6 (6 pm). Contact Jennifer M. to reserve your spot! South Niagara Salons say “Cut it Out” to domestic violence Throughout March 2014, salons across Niagara South hosted Cut it Out events in support of Women’s Place. Salons and stylists gave generously of their time and talent and we are so grateful – thank you! The Niagara College Hairstyling Techniques program hosted a kick-off for the event, with College president Dan Patterson and members of the executive receiving haircuts at the College salon. Girasole Salon & Spa, Metamorphis Styles, Nino D’Ambra Hair & Aesthetics, Sears Hair Studio, The Revival Salon opened their doors and donated proceeds from their salon services to us, while Classi-Cuts raffled off a prize basket to one lucky winner. Philip Anthony’s Coiffure sold 50-50 tickets for the event, and Xcess Hair by Anita collected donations on our behalf. The final tally is still being counted, but more importantly the salons & stylists raised awareness of domestic violence in the communities that we serve, and for this we are very appreciative. Our “Thanks!” to those salons who participated, along with their clients, donors and supporters – we could not have done it without you! Ask your salon if they are participating in Cut it Out 2015! Follow us @WomensPlaceSN The Niagara Prosperity Initiative: Helping us to Stop the Cycle Last year, the Niagara Prosperity Initiative (NPI) provided generous funding that allowed us to build partnerships and raise awareness of dating and domestic violence in our communities. We are pleased to announce that this funding has been extended once again to support our efforts in 2014! While we continue to offer educational programming to school and community groups throughout our service area, this grant will be particularly helpful in improving awareness of our services in some of the lower-income areas of Welland. If you know a business, social service organization, school or other organization that might be interested in learning about the work we do and the issues of dating and domestic violence, please contact Jennifer McQuestion (ext. 239) or Noelle Antkowiak (ext. 228 ). Let’s work together to stop the cycle! To pledge your support to the Public Education Program, please call 905-356-3933 ext. 239.
