EXAM PREP:
ISEE AND SSAT
FOR 8th GRADERS
This test preparation class is specially
designed for eighth graders who are
preparing to take entrance exams for
admission to independent high schools.
However, students from 7th through 10th
grade are welcome to register for practice.
The ISEE (Independent School Entrance
Examination) is required of many students
entering private schools such as TMI and St.
Mary’s Hall. The SSAT (Secondary School
Admissions Test) is required of some eighth
graders applying for admission to other
independent high schools. In this two–session
class, Karl Graf prepares students for both
English and math sections, using practice
exams from the ISEE, SSAT and Catholic high
school entrance tests. This class is excellent
preparation for all types of standardized tests,
and tuition includes a workbook for use in
class and to take home for further practice.

MONSTERS IN CLAY
Want to create something really cool to
decorate your room for Halloween? Make
an amazing clay sculpture in the shape of a
mythical creature. Maybe you’d like to sculpt
a griffin, a grotesque, or a gargoyle. Imagine
the features that you can add: bulging eyes,
fangs or pointed claws! Popular instructor
Samantha Ostos will teach you the basic skills
of hand building, and then you’ll experiment
with a wide variety of tools that you can use
to define the lines and details of your piece.
To make your artwork complete, add color
to your mythical beast, using vibrant under
glazes. Then, Ms. Ostos will glaze and fire
your mythological monster; you will be
notified when your finished creation is
ready for pickup at SAA.
KID CHEFS
PHONICS FOR ADULTS
Academy first grade teachers Tanya Weis
and Lindsay Kramme offer exciting afterschool cooking classes. Each of the four
Thursday sessions will feature a sumptuous
make-and-bake-at-home meal for two.
Students will prepare comfort foods as well
as holiday entrées and desserts. Measure,
mix and assemble the meal, studying math
and nutrition in the process. Decorate and
personalize your own chef’s apron, and create
a keepsake cookbook. After the final class,
students will take home their chef’s attire,
recipes and souvenir cookware. Bon Appétit!
This an intensive course in explicit
phonograms; participants will learn and
master the 71 most fundamental sounds in the
English language. The first session features
an introduction to the phonics system, the
Rules of English, and decoding/encoding
English words. In the second session, we’ll
focus on games, phonics applications, a
make-and-take component, and suggestions
for teaching reading and phonics at home
and in the classroom. Additional reference
materials include spelling lists, practice
sheets and a guide to the Five Silent E’s. This
course is excellent for parents of children
in pre-kindergarten through second grade
(including those who are home-schooled); it
is beneficial also for parents of older students
who are experiencing reading or language
barriers. Grandparents and teachers are

PUMPKINS, SCARECROWS
AND NUMBERS--OH, MY!
PAINT WITH PASTELS
Get ready to “fall” for some autumn fun!
Use various units of measurement to find
the circumference of pumpkins and other
gourds. We will strengthen our counting skills
as we use pumpkin seeds to sort and group
by 5’s and 10’s and then make predictions
for those seeds based on pumpkin sizes.
Memory games, skip-counting and a bit of
fraction work will come into play as we read
fall-themed stories. Participants will take
home their decorated pumpkin and a bag of
Halloween treats.
Samantha Ostos is well known for this art
class because her students’ artwork is so
beautiful. Participants will be introduced to
the magic of pastels as they study design,
color theory and techniques for blending
colors for striking effects. Experiment with
chalk and oil pastels, ink, printmaking and
watercolor in this fun-filled morning. This
is a great class for beginners as well as
those who have worked with pastels before,
as today’s projects differ from previous
workshops. We’ll frame your favorite
“masterpiece,” and students will also take
home paper and a box of oil pastels.

FAMOUS ARTIST SERIES:
GEORGIA O’KEEFFE
MR. BONES
This workshop offers students an
opportunity to make observations and
diagrams of skeletal systems. There
will be mammalian bones, x-rays and
models to help participants understand
bone structure. View a bone cell under
the microscope, and dissect an owl
pellet to find many bones to match
to the charts provided. Mount the
bones like a puzzle to recreate the
form of the animal that was eaten by
the owl. Use stickers to assemble the
human skeleton, make bone crafts for
Halloween and take home a treat bag!
So educational, yet lots of fun!
Join Cathy Cummins to study the life and
times of one of America’s greatest artists.
See nature as O’Keeffe did: the stark beauty
and basic shapes of flowers, bones and
boulders found on the desert landscape of
her Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. Paint your
own Southwestern masterpiece with acrylics
on canvas. Also paint succulents on terracotta
vessels and tiles. Students will receive a
portfolio of materials from the O’Keeffe

FREE PARENTING LECTURE:
NURTURE SHOCK
This evening’s conversation centers
on Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman’s
New York Times bestseller Nurture
Shock. In this popular book the
authors point out how our instincts
about children can be so off-the-mark!
One of the most important chapters,
“The Inverse Power of Praise,” says
some research suggests if you tell
your children they’re special, you can
actually ruin them! Other chapters
discuss sibling rivalry, bullying, jumpstarting children’s language skills,
why kids lie, and teaching children
about race issues. This book is an
eye-opener, so come ready to join
the
discussion.
Participants
will
receive hand-outs containing pertinent
articles. Admission is free, but
space is limited; for reservations,
please email Michele Cummins:

NOVEMBER
YOUNG WRITER’S WORKSHOP
Creative writing is one of most challenging
skills that students are asked to demonstrate.
They are required to write essays for
standardized tests throughout school;
later they must write themes, articles and
speeches in most career fields. Yet, most
students receive little direct instruction or
practice to acquire this essential proficiency.
In this two-session class, Kathy Bolner will
introduce a variety of writing genres including
short stories, poetry and narrative prose.
Using a keyword graphic outline, participants
will organize ideas and structure information.
The young authors will write a biographical
sketch, a poem, and a short story or nonfiction report. They will learn how to “build”
the plot, the climax and the conclusion, taking
time to develop clear language to explain the
characters and setting. This is a good way to
hone skills and overcome any writing block.
Mrs. Bolner will critique and edit the written
work; students will take home a portfolio,
including a journal and writing instruments.
TOMB RAIDERS
Uncover the mysteries of ancient Egypt in
this new, two-session class. Curious about
mummies? We’ll study Anubis and investigate
the process of mummification. Ms. Ostos will
teach basic hand building skills, and students
will build a clay canopic jar, including a unique,
sculptured cover. Create a cartouche that can
be worn as a pendant, and personalize it with
your name written in Egyptian hieroglyphics.
Imagine yourself as pharaoh and design
your own sarcophagus, complete with a selfportrait. Participants will receive a magazine
containing additional intriguing information
about Ancient Egypt, a scarab, a hieroglyph
decoder and an Egyptian goody bag. Go on
a treasure hunt with your decoder to find a
surprise in the pharaoh’s tomb!

MASTER MULTIPLICATION
MATH TOY STORE
Does your child need to memorize the
multiplication tables once and for all? Many
students are going forward to advanced math
strategies without knowing the basics, and
often they are not receiving the extra help
they need to master these facts. Jerry Campa
will make multiplication easier to understand.
Each participant’s current skill level will be
assessed, followed by drills, games and plenty
of review to help students learn to multiply.
Extra take-home exercises will be given so
students can continue to boost their skills.
This class is designed to teach young children
about coins and relative value. Each student
will receive a “cash drawer” with both paper
currency and plastic coins. Hands-on games
with math manipulatives will instruct students
in money matters, and also offer practice in
addition and subtraction. Finally, participants
will visit the Academy “toy store” to purchase

FREE PARENTING LECTURE:
TEACHING THE MALE BRAIN
In this follow-up to last year’s discussion
about male self-esteem, behavior
and goal-setting, this evening we will
discuss more about educating boys.
Dr. Abigail Norfleet James has written a
holistic reference for parents, caregivers
and educators. Updated with the
latest research in neuroscience and
developmental psychology, this bestselling guide translates theory into
strategies that are effective and easy to
use. Dr. James also addresses tried-andtrue techniques for differentiating learning
in coed classrooms. We will explore
cognitive differences in boys, and how
these differences relate to learning. Dr.
James explains that when we discover
keys that unlock their potential, every
boy can succeed beyond expectations.
Participants will examine inventory and
assessment forms that can be used
to determine dominant learning style,
interest and talent dominance, and
reading and writing achievement. We’ll
also consider suggested remediation
and enrichment activities. Participants
will receive related articles about the

CHINESE TERRACOTTA
WARRIORS
Get ready for the Chinese New Year
(February 8, 2016) by delving into ancient
Chinese history! You will be amazed to
learn about the terracotta army of Qin Shi
Huang; discovered only 42 years ago and
still actively being excavated, the terracotta
figures include warriors, chariots, acrobats,
musicians and horses, which were buried with
the first Emperor of China. The sculptures
were believed to protect the emperor in the
afterlife. In today’s workshop, design and
build your own clay warrior guardian. Study
the weaponry and armor of the many types
of warriors already unearthed, or create your
own. Since 2016 is the Year of the Monkey,
we’ll celebrate by creating a monkey puppet.
Complete your Chinese adventure by painting
a unique New Year dragon or fan. Participants
will take home Chinese souvenirs including
figurines, a good luck pendant and rice candy
– you can even eat the rice paper wrapper!

MIGHTY MAGNETS
SHARKS UP CLOSE
Join Elizabeth Snow for this new science
workshop. Through hands-on experiments,
we’ll study the basics of magnetism, how to
classify magnetic and non-magnetic materials,
and the effects of attraction and repulsion.
Handle “thinking” putty, an astonishing
moldable substance that you can magnetize!
Then, discover north/south polarity with iron
filings and a cylindrical magnet. Enjoy sorting
games such as separating objects that stick
to a magnet from those that don’t. Using the
scientific method, manipulate magnetic discs
and marbles to build towers, a marble run
and a magnetic track. Take home a magnetic
wand, a discovery jar and a set of magnets
with a magnet tray, so you can continue to
experiment with “the force.”
Please note: this workshop is for students
who have taken a previous dissection
class. Prepare to dissect a dogfish shark in
Mrs. Villa’s marine biology workshop. The
spiny dogfish is one of the smaller sharks
of the species. As always, safety is our
primary concern, so first we will review the
uses of the dissection instruments. Then,
we’ll dissect the shark to view the cartilage,
the huge swim bladder, the heart and other
organs. Investigate other sharks and ocean
specimens; consult the reference books and
draw your observations in a lab journal. A
fascinating study!

The unique vision of Russian-born French
painter Marc Chagall (1897-1985) made him
one of the most popular artists of the 20th
Century. He drew upon childhood memories
of life on a Russian farm in order to create
his poetic style and dreamlike images. He
painted musicians, flowers and other images
from the daily lives of the Jewish peasants
in his boyhood home of Vitebsk. Chagall
also enjoyed drawing scenes of his adopted
home, Paris. He was a master of color! In
this Sunday workshop, use acrylics to paint
a canvas in the style of Chagall, and make
a mini wall hanging. Students will receive a
portfolio containing prints and other materials.
We’ll save time for delicious French snacks

FREE PARENTING LECTURE:
OUTLIERS
Tonight’s lecture is based upon the 2008
bestseller by Malcolm Gladwell, author
and staff writer for “The New Yorker.” In
Outliers, Gladwell explores the question,
“Why do some people succeed far more
than others”? His answers are fascinating
and complex, and raise relevant issues
for parents. He shows that the factors that
contribute to success are not limited to
money and education, but include family,
generation, culture, birthplace and even
birth date! Through first-hand biographical
examples, Gladwell presents a blueprint
for maximizing human potential. We’ll
discuss the commonalities between Bill
Gates and the Beatles, and between
the world’s smartest man (who did not
succeed) and Robert Oppenheimer,
another genius who did succeed.
Gladwell also identifies some of the
hidden reasons why Asian children seem
to excel at math, why some students
become excellent pilots and why a huge
percentage of the top New York lawyers
all have a similar resume! Mrs. Cummins
will reveal Gladwell’s formula for providing
American children with a good education,
and share his story of a miracle school
that transforms losers into winners.

THE VIKING WORLD
Art and history combined into one
great class! Vikings were Scandinavian
warriors and explorers who sailed in
longboats across rivers and seas during
the 8th to 11th centuries. Many examples
of their culture are still present in our
world today. In this fun-filled class, study
ancient Viking culture and folklore. Begin
by painting a longboat and designing a
unique sail to embellish your ship. Then,
try your hand at map making: chart the
exploration routes of the Vikings, but
watch out for the Kraken! Sew a simple
burlap pouch and fill it with runes painted
with the sound symbols of the Viking
alphabet. Receive a very special souvenir

BONE-OLOGY
HOT WHEELS RACERS
Do you know what the skull of a deer, pig and
rat look like? How about a human skull? This
workshop offers students an opportunity to
make observations and diagrams of skeletal
systems. There will be various mammalian
bones, x-rays and models to help participants
understand bone structure. View a bone cell
under the microscope, and use stickers to
assemble the human skeleton. Dissect an owl
pellet; then, mount the bones like a puzzle to
recreate the form of the animals eaten by the
owl. Everyone will take home a treat bag.
This will be an exciting, fast paced session
that teaches the scientific principles of force,
inertia and momentum. Receive a driver’s
backpack and collection of Hot Wheels,
including some color shifters that can be

FREE PARENTING LECTURE:
THE READING BRAIN
At San Antonio Academy, Maree Longoria
is the Chair of the Reading Department,
and Cathy Cummins is the Director of The
Reading Institute. Join them this evening for
a dynamic discussion of the best methods for
teaching the most essential life skill: reading.
Mrs. Longoria presents a review of legislative
mandates concerning American education. She
will quote portions of the April 13, 2000 Report
of the National Reading Panel, citing some of
the components of an effective reading program:
explicit instruction in phonemic awareness;
systematic phonics instruction; methods to
improve fluency; vocabulary and comprehension
strategies. The findings of the latest brain
research confirm that children are not born with
a fully developed word form area; they need
consistent instruction in explicit phonics. Cathy
Cummins offers instruction several areas: the 71
most frequently used phonograms in the English
language, the 29 Rules of English and effective
comprehension techniques. Participants will
receive reference materials including phonogram
cards, reading lists for elementary school
students, and fun phonics games to play at
home. Admission is free, but space is limited;
for reservations, please email Michele
Cummins, [email protected].
DRAWING MASTERS
Can everyone learn to draw if the correct
techniques are properly taught? Talented artist
and dedicated educator William Woodland
thinks so, and he will demonstrate skills that
students should learn in order to progress in
the art of sketching. Topics include light, point
of view, form, texture, line, mass, positive and
negative space, shading and perspective.
If weather permits, students will sit outside
under The Academy’s 500 year-old oak tree
to enjoy this drawing class. Mr. Woodland
is experienced in working with youngsters;
they appreciate his personal attention and
excellent instruction. Participants will receive

THE EXCELLENT 11
Ron Clark has been a teacher for over 20
years, and now oversees the operation of
his dream school in Atlanta, the Ron Clark
Academy. He has taught in some of the most
challenging schools in the country, and was
the 2001 Disney Teacher of the Year. In The
Excellent 11 (a sequel to his blockbuster
hit, The Essential 55), Clark outlines the
qualities shared by teachers and parents
who know how to demonstrate the joy of
learning. Discover how you can incorporate
these qualities into your home life. There
are hundreds of suggestions, stories and
wonderfully funny anecdotes to entertain
us as we explore this topic. Clark’s words
of wisdom seem so obvious; however, it is
easy to forget their importance, and even
easier to fail to put them into practice. We’ll
do games and exercises that show us how
we can help children develop enthusiasm,
creativity, reflection, balance, compassion,
humor, common sense, resilience and more!

Join our quest for gold in this swashbuckling
Kids’ Night Out. We’ll be pirates, brave and
bold, as we enjoy fun activities, crafts and
games, movies and a pizza party. Don a
costume – a hat, earring and eye patch. Next,
play Swing the Rat and Walk the Plank, and
follow the map to find a fabulous treasure.
Dig for gold nuggets, play Captain Morgan’s
favorite games with gold coins, and make
your own treasure box. Use colored sand to
create a beautiful sculpture, and paint a ship,
complete with the Jolly Roger!
LADYBUG LAND
An amazing new class! Participants will study
ladybug metamorphosis by setting up a
domed habitat, complete with ladybug larvae
that will undergo the two-week developmental
change. Kathy Villa, science teacher
extraordinaire, will have a ladybug land with
adult specimens for you to observe, as well as
other examples from the insect world: hissing
cockroaches, grasshoppers and a praying
mantis. Make an insect model of a lightning
bug that has a fluorescent thorax. Start a lab
journal with drawings and notes about the
insects on display. The domed habitat you
construct will allow you to get a bug’s-eye
view of the larvae-to-adult process, and you
will receive special gels for the larvae to drink.
It will be exciting to take home your habitat
and ladybug larvae to continue your scientific
discoveries!

FAMOUS ARTIST SERIES:
CLAUDE MONET
A perfect art class for a spring afternoon!
Study the life and work of French artist
Claude Monet. Regarded as the “Father of
Impressionism,” Monet often painted scenes
of the waterlilies and Japanese footbridge in
his extensive gardens in Giverny, as well as
scenes from the nearby city of Rouen. He
painted the Rouen Cathedral more than 20
times! Prints and postcards from the Monet
Museum will inspire young artists, as they
create their own masterpieces using acrylics
on canvas. Additional projects include a
pressed flower coaster and tile painting. We’ll
enjoy French snacks, too!

ART LAB: MIXED MEDIA
Does a career as an artist appeal to you? Not
sure what type of art you would like best?
This class gives students the opportunity to
experiment, using traditional art media and
techniques. Begin with acrylics on canvas
inspired by Paul Klee’s Cat and Bird. Klee is
known for his use of geometric shapes and
love of color – experiment with both as you
paint. Next, discover the vibrant paintings of
Louisiana artist George Rodrigue, who started
painting in the third grade. His works show
the influence of the landscape and people
of his native Louisiana. His most recognized
paintings from the Blue Dog series were
influenced by the legend of the loup-garou
(werewolf) and Rodrigue’s dog, Tiffany. Try
your hand at a chalk pastel inspired by Blue
Dog. Wrap up by studying Andy Warhol, and
see if you can design a soup can of your own
in the style of this famous American Pop artist.
