Two beautiful quilts were donated to the Rescue Mission that were lovingly made by Ms. Mavis Wilcox P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, VA 24022 rescuemission.net (540) 343-7227 MAY 2016 I Gave Up on “Mother of the Year” in the Second Trimester May 12 The Network Meeting, 5:30 pm By Joy Sylvester-Johnson May 14 - 2nd helpings Artist Reception: Michael Wessel, “Marred by Man or Time,” Photography, 1-3 pm “She has my ears, your nose, your mother’s hair, my dad’s complexion—and the goofy smile—that’s all her own.” resisted the desire to “eat her young.” Why do we look at our newborns for signs of ourselves? No mother is an A+ mother 100% of the time and if she were her kids would probably be neurotic due to the pressure. Most of the mistakes I made along the way do not seem to have yielded the catastrophes I was certain would come while some of the things I thought were most important, were not. When I watch my six hooligans (what I call the grandchildren) navigate life with falls and dares and the thrill of success and the devastation of failure—I wonder how any of us ever made it out of childhood alive! Perhaps it’s because we know our children will be what remains of us in a time we will not see. They will carry the family story forward. We know that even some of the ones that seem not to listen or take any instruction seriously will, in the end, either imitate or react against what they have experienced while in our care. I remember reading all the books and listening to all the well intentioned advice about having a baby, but none of it prepared me for the reality. Apparently I was not alone. Marni Jackson, author of The Mother Zone, said when she brought her baby home she became another person who “ate like a wolf, napped like a cat and dreamed like a madwoman.” Anne Lamott, one of my favorite authors, said: “Having a baby is like suddenly getting the worst roommate imaginable. Think: Janice Joplin suffering with a hangover and PMS, coming to your house to stay.” I overheard a woman with several little ones in the pediatrician’s office when I was there (for the second time) to have a jelly bean, a paperclip and a small handwritten note removed from my own four-year old’s nose: “Before I had children I had half a dozen theories about how it should be done. Then I had four of my own and now I have no theories.” Another woman sitting nearby responded that she felt she was successful when she Here is what time has taught me. I have learned that I am not the Judge when it comes to mothering. Even that mother many of us would nominate as the “worst” mother usually loves her children and they seem to know it. So on Mother’s Day I will celebrate not only the mothers who managed to produce those “way above average children” Garrison Keillor always talks about, but each woman who has taken on the challenge of raising a child (who comes with no instruction manual). I will celebrate the mothers of my grandchildren who I feel are better at it than I was, the mothers of those who have inspired me, the mothers of those who even now, are mentors and friends. I think I have my mother’s sense of humor, her entrepreneurial spirit and, even more important her love of Jesus, her appreciation of grace and her unquenchable desire to know God better. I hope when all is said and all is done I manage to pass on what I have been given. The online day of giving provided a perfect opportunity to showcase the creativity of some of our Recovery Program participants who, along with their instructor Jennifer Mulligan, hosted a special pottery exhibit at 2nd helpings Gallery. It was a special evening of shared stories, pottery demonstrations, and refreshments to cap off an exciting day. Unable to work due to his injury, he soon became unable to afford his rent. “I came to the Rescue Mission in November to recuperate because I knew they could help me. Since I’ve been in the Tabitha program at the Mission I got help with my disability papers and started drawing SSI, and I’ve been saving up my money to be able to get my own place.” St. Clair, like all Tabitha Program participants, has been required to deposit 75% of his income to a Rescue Mission savings plan. “It didn’t bother me a bit to have to do that,” he says of the plan, which is designed to help participants pay off outstanding debts and save for a deposit, utilities, and first month’s rent. “If you do it, you’ll be able to get on your feet and into your own place sooner, and that’s what I wanted to do.” On a sunny April afternoon St. Clair, a member of All Nations Church, loaded the last of his belongings into his car to move out of the Mission and into permanent housing. “I feel good,” he said with a smile. Linda Roland has also appreciated the savings plan, and looks forward to moving to permanent housing herself this summer. “I had lost everything when I came here in December after my husband died. We had lost our home and been living in a motel because I traveled a lot for my sales job and could no longer drive or work due to a seizure disorder. By the time I got to the Mission, I had nothing left but some clothes in a duffel bag.” Roland, 54, says the Tabitha program has given her a new outlook on life. “I’m slowly paying off the last of my bills. I’m regaining my self-esteem and confidence that I lost to years of abuse. I found Jesus here and I’m healing.” A member of Elevation Church, Roland says her Mission service assignment as a night monitor in the Women and Children’s Center has given her a new passion. “I would love to find a part-time job doing something to help the homeless. At the very least I’ll be volunteering around here after I leave. The Rescue Mission is more than just a place to stay if you let it be. Nothing is handed to you; it’s what you’re willing to put into it. I’ve taken this place to heart and I’m grateful for my second chance.” At Jubilee Acres, One Week can Change a Life Camp Wish List: • Water Shoes • Sunscreen, • Towels • Bug Spray To make a donation please call the Rescue Mission at 540-343-7227 Roanoke City Council Candidate Michelle Dykstra toured the Mission to learn more about support services in the community. Dykstra expressed her delight to discover that services such as the Clinic, addiction recovery and jobs skills programs, day camp for children, Manna Mission Ministry, etc., make the Rescue Mission much more than a homeless shelter. Every dollar I can save is a dollar more for mission programs to serve people in crisis.” Known affectionately around the Rescue Mission as Green Dean since becoming Maintenance Administrator last fall, Ratliff is on a hunt for ways to decrease physical plant expenses. “We felt we were spending too much money on our water and electricity,” he explains. “In the past six months we’ve removed 400 32-watt fluorescent light tubes. Between that and educating staff about turning off lights and unplugging appliances and electronics, we reduced our usage by 50,000 KWH so that our electric bill in February was $2200 less than in February of 2015.” Manna Ministries •Filling and Distributing boxes of food Saturdays from 7:30 am - 10:30 am •Stocking items in the Mission pantry Kitchen Volunteers •Afternoon Food Prep from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm everyday •Breakfast on Saturday from 5:30 pm - 7:30 am or Sunday from 5:30 am - 8:00 am •Prep/Lunch on Saturday from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm •Pancake Brunch on Saturday from 7:30 am - 10:30 am •Dinner from 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm To Volunteer Please Contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 540-777-7651 or [email protected] Not sure how you can help or want to learn more about our services? Before accepting his new position, Ratliff worked 4 ½ years at the Mission as a driver doing residential pickups of donated furniture and household goods. “I had worked a desk job for many years and the corporate culture just wasn’t very satisfying. Coming to the Rescue Mission was a new adventure. I loved meeting so many people, hearing their stories, and having the opportunity to pray with them.” Ratliff recalled picking up furniture from a man who had recently lost his son. “I listened to him share with me about his son and then I prayed with him. I think that shared time was a blessing to both of us.” A member of Green Ridge Baptist Church, Ratliff is enjoying the challenge of his new position, and says he is proud of the efforts of the 6-member green team. “Our newest initiative will be to place blue receptacles at every copier in the Mission to collect paper and shredded paper waste. My job is to help everyone at the mission become a wise consumer and an advocate of re-using, recycling, repurposing and rethinking some of our old ways of doing things. The success of this effort pays off for everyone when we all work together.” Ferrum College Social Work students hosted a resume workshop on Tuesday for our shelter guests. They also conducted mock interviews and helped men and women set up email accounts that they can use for job searches.
