Karleen Quick: I took all the dogs, and Tim, to Madera this weekend for
the Fresno Dog Training Club Agility Trial. It's always a nice trial and is
usually raining. Since Cody has decided that "for reals" he's a cold weather
dog, we went with high hopes. Guess what? It was 86 on Friday.....we
bombed big time but we had a great day. Saturday we didn't compete and
went to the mountains instead. On Sunday it was cold with a few showers,
Yippeee. Here's our brag: Sunday 11/7/10 Cody PStd ExB 12" SCT 74
Yrds 181 Place 1st Score 100 Time 59.25. PJWW Ex B 12" SCT 44 Yds
138 Place 2nd Score 100 Time 41.27 QQ (we got our first double Q!)
Marion Bashista: Ella, at NorCal Golden Retriever Club's trial over the November 13-14 weekend earned her 4th Excellent B MXJ leg with in a time of
36.49 (SCT-45 Distance-167 yds) and a 1st place finish for her 1st Excellent

RAE finished her title
with a first place at the
American Chesapeake
Club National held in Gilroy on September 30th. Summer got
all 3 legs starting in January of this year. This was a tough
one for Summer as she doesn't focus well but pulled it together at the trial that mattered most. While we'll play around
with utility training I seriously doubt we'll compete for that title
- but ya never know!

Ice Skating Made Easy
The other day we were watching a television program on figure skating. There were lots of fancy jumps and spins and all that icy
stuff. We were really excited about it. I thought I would look particularly cute in one of those fancy costumes. Fancy was afraid
that the skaters would all catch cold because the costumes are so skimpy. Chelsea giggled at them because they were showing so
much skin on their legs. She feels that anyone who is going to show so much leg should at least have a lot of fur.
One of Mommy’s friends heard us talking about the skating and suggested to Mommy that she should talk us ice skating. That
sounded like such fun, but Mommy said we couldn’t go this week because she had to make a papier maché kangaroo for a raffle
prize at the dog training club picnic. She said we might be able to go next week.
Since none of us had ever tried ice skating, we thought we might get in some practice before Mommy was able to take us. We didn’t
quite know how to go about it, so we thought and thought about it. We have rollerskated a little bit, so that gave us an idea.
Fancy dragged a chair over to the refrigerator and opened the freezer so she could get us a bunch of ice cubes. Chelsea went in
Mommy’s closet and got us some shoelaces. I could hardly wait.
We tied the ice cubes to our paws with the shoelaces and tried to skate across the kitchen floor. Fancy bellied out as her feet went
four different directions at once. Chelsea complained that her feet were cold. We tried putting socks on her feet; but we put them
over the ice cubes, too. She ended up with wet feet and wet socks, and she still wasn’t able to slide on the floor. She finally gave up
and took the socks off so she could glide really well.
We practiced a whole bunch and finally got pretty good at gliding around the floor. We decided to try some of the fancy tricks we
saw on the Ice Capades show.
First I tried to do a fancy jump. I landed on my nose. Then I jumped harder and grabbed hold of the chandelier. (The chandelier has
gotten a big workout since we Shelties moved into the house.) I held on for a long time, but after a while my paws got tired of holding on. I let go and would have landed in a big puddle, but Fancy caught me.
Next Chelsea picked me up and gave me an elegant toss. I landed in the sink. Fancy suggested that I wash the dishes while I was
there. Yuck! Since there was already some soap in the sink, I tossed a bubble at her. It floated around a whole bunch and then
popped on Fancy’s nose. She sneezed.
Then Chelsea tried a lift—she lifted Fancy over her head. But Chelsea didn’t have a good hold on Fancy, and Fancy slipped and fell
on top of Chelsea. Chelsea said a bad word. She isn’t supposed to know any, but she snuck into a movie theater one time while
Mommy was at work.
Then we decided to crack the whip. I got on the end of the line. We skated around and around, faster and faster. I didn’t know what
to expect next, so it was really scary when Chelsea and Fancy cracked the whip and I went smack into the wallpaper. My poor
nose—I look like a pug!
When we heard Mommy coming home, we quickly tried to remove our ice skates. Somehow, they were already gone. What do you
think happened to them?
When Mommy came in, Chelsea was reading “Living with a Sheltie Varmint”, Fancy was embroidering a garbage can cover, and I
was coloring in my “Barbie Meets Godzilla” coloring book.
Mommy asked why our feet were blue and why the kitchen floor was all wet. Chelsea said, “What kitchen floor?” Fancy said,
“Blue is our color.” I said, “Can we have a bath?”
That did it! Mommy became immediately suspicious. She noticed that our feet were really cold. She asked why. Chelsea said,
“It’s a new doggie health check—sort of like checking for a cold nose.” Fancy said, “I was cleaning the inside of the refrigerator.” I
said, “That new dress makes you look a lot taller.”

Just then Mommy noticed that there was one remaining ice cube. It had a paw print in it. It looked as if our Sheltie gooses were
cooked then. She wouldn’t believe us when we told her it was a new fashion—designer ice cubes. It was a little like Cinderella,
only Mommy was comparing ice cube paw prints with Sheltie paws. Fortunately, by the time she got to the right paw, the ice cube
had melted. So she couldn’t actually prove anything.
Mommy reminded us that Sheltie households are not democracies. She made a one-sided, biased decision about what had happened. We were tried, convicted, and sentenced without benefit of counsel. Is that fair? Anyway, Chelsea was sentenced to mop
the kitchen floor. She is grumbling. Fancy was sentenced to clean the inside of the refrigerator for real. She is shivering. Thanks to
my suggestion, we all got baths again. Woe is us. Life is so hard!
